Masters Of Sex - Through a Glass, Darkly - Review

20 Sept 2015

Things are becoming more and more complicated in the Master and Johnson world. There were several heart wrenching moments in the episode, titled Through a Glass, Darkly. As much as I enjoyed last week's episode, they just seem like they keep getting better. Maybe it's because we’re nearing the end of season 3 but things are starting to really unfold for everyone.
I first need to mention the scene where Bill discovers that Virginia and Dan are together, as he watched them drive away together. That sends Bill into a tailspin where he starts drinking and goes to Nora. I knew that was coming and I feel like everyone was worried this was going to happen. Bill drunkenly kisses Nora and when it appears that things will go further, Bill realizes the mistake he was making. It was absolutely heartbreaking when he said that the only thing he has ever done right was give his whole heart to someone. Of course Nora thought he was talking about Libby but we all know that it was Virginia that he was referring to. I could be remembering this wrong but this seemed like the first real admission of Virginia being the only one he truly loved.

Unfortunately for Bill things are about to get even worse. He learns that Libby is planning on leaving him for Paul. I’m sad for him but I was really happy to see Libby finally make a decisions about her marriage. It doesn’t surprise me that the only reason she would finally leave Bill is because she’s being offered another chance at marriage. It makes me wonder if Libby truly cares for Paul or if she sees a nice man that would allow her to be happier then she is now. Regardless of the reasons I’m looking forward to her telling Bill, as this moment has been a long time coming in my books.

Another heartbreaking moment in this week's episode was watching Barton continue to hide who he truly is. When he was in the bar and those two other gentleman join him and his coworker I thought that was very sad that he felt uncomfortable and left when things turn badly with them. It’s a great representation of what would happen back then and it’s no wonder why he’s still not okay with others knowing that he’s gay. The one thing that was really nice to see was Barton agreeing to help Betty and Helen, even saying that Betty would be allowed to be in the room with Helen during her appointments and the delivery. It was very moving.

As we watch Virginia sneak around with Dan and even develop a new study in order to keep him around the office, I couldn’t help but wonder what her plan was. What is she going to do when she learns that Bill knows about her and Dan? Is she going to give up her relationship with him to save her job? I think she would. At the end of the day the thing that seemed most important to her was always her work so it will be really interesting to see her choose between the two. Do you have any predictions on what will happen before the season finale?
