11th January 2019 - Art Marcum & Matt Holloway to Pen New Draft

Writers Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (Men in Black: International, Iron Man, Transformers: The Last Knight) are in final talks to write the new draft of Masters of the Universe, which Adam Aaron Nee will direct.

Currently, Masters of the Universe had a release date of this year on December 20, but getting an event production of this magnitude up and running will take time. So it’s quite conceivable we could see that release date move into 2020.

19th April 2018 - Aaron and Adam Nee Tapped to Direct

Sony Pictures and Mattel have tapped the directing duo of Aaron and Adam Nee to helm the He-Man movie “Masters of the Universe,” sources tell Variety.

The movie will be based on the beloved Mattel toyline, which spawned a successful animated TV series (1983-85) as well as a 1987 film. The property centers on the warrior He-Man, the last hope of a magical land called Eternia. Dolph Lundgren starred in the original pic as the title character, while Frank Langella played the villainous Skeletor.

The pic is written by David Goyer, who is also an executive producer. Goyer had circled the director’s chair, but prior engagements forced him to pass on directing, though insiders say he is extremely involved in the development of the film.

  • 12th April 2010 - Mike Finch and Alex Litvak Drafting Script
We can add Mike Finch and Alex Litvak to the names of screenwriters who have attempted to adapt the Mattel toy line “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” to the big screen. Columbia has hired the duo, whose script for the Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators franchise relaunch finally got that project out of long time development hell, to hopefully work similar magic on the toy property.

  • 23rd September 2009 - Sony Developing Live-Action Adaptation
As for He-Man, Sony is finalizing a deal to produce a bigscreen adaptation of Mattel’s popular action figure line, with Escape Artists shepherding the project.

The property, which originated in 1983 as an animated series and toy line, had previously been set up at Warner Bros., where Joel Silver had been developing a pic since 2007. Mattel wound up taking back the rights and leaving the lot after Mattel, the studio and Silver couldn’t agree on the creative direction of the film (Daily Variety, Sept. 9).

Sony and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will now start developing the project from scratch for Columbia Pictures, sources close to the negotiations said.
