Masters Of Sex - The Excitement of Release - Review

Once again the show slows down to show us the events of a couple of weeks instead of like last week’s where we fast forward through almost a year. I enjoyed this week’s episode titled The Excitement of Release, as they dealt with numerous personal and professional problems. I’m happy that the book was a success as we all know how bad things turned out last time Virginia and Bill presented their findings. The critics were giving the book rave reviews but that wasn’t enough for Bill, he now has the mission of getting his book used as curriculum material in Universities. At the present time it isn’t looking so good for the book or Bill as everyone is turning him down. My guess is that he will get someone to take the chance on the book as course material as we know that in today’s health classes that material is taught and I’m assuming that Masters and Johnson played a vital role in that.
Bill seemed irritated with Virginia when she was late for work and some meetings because she was dealing with Tessa issues. It’s ironic that he was giving her such a difficult time about her commitment to their work over her children, considering Bill was the one in last week’s episode that told her that she could do both! I felt bad for Tessa once we learned that one of the reasons that she was acting out was due to people’s reactions to her mom’s book. I know that wouldn’t have been easy to go through especially in high school at that day and age. However, did anyone else think Tessa was not completely innocent about how she was being treated? She didn’t have to have a copy of the book at school and she certainly didn’t need to read it to her friends. I’m not sure why she wouldn’t realize that that wasn’t a good idea.

When Virginia wasn’t focused on Tessa she was trying to find a sponsor for Masters and Johnson’s practice. Those scenes were entertaining especially when Virginia and Betty have a meeting with Hugh Hefner. The casting for the younger Hugh was amazing and seemed uncanny. I have to admit I’m not familiar with the true story of Masters and Johnson but to me, I’m not sure getting into business with Mr. Hefner would have been a good move for them. Bill didn’t think so and they decided to partner up with the perfume and fragrance guy, Dan Logan played by Josh Charles (The Good Wife). There may have been a hint that he could cause some personal problems for Bill as he showed interest in Virginia. I hope they do develop that story. It would be interesting to see how Bill handles that.

Barton Scully was back in this episode and he’s still hiding who he truly is. Bill turned to Barton for help getting the book into universities but he soon discovers that his friend is being talked about and mocked by their peers. Sometimes Bill appears to only care about himself but it was nice to see him stick up for Barton, even at the cost of his book being used as a textbook. Bill asked Barton to join him at his practice informing him that he accepts him for who he is. I don’t know why Barton wouldn’t take Bill up on his offer but I feel like there’s more to see of that storyline.

I don’t remember if this was explained in a previous episode but what happened to Lester seeing Barbara? I found that a little annoying that they didn’t explain how Jane came back and that Lester married her and not Barbara. Did anyone else miss that?

This was another great Masters Of Sex episode and I have to say I loved the last few minutes. There was a tender moment when Virginia brings baby Lisa into the bedroom to lay next to her and Bill. The way that scene played out I believe that Libby’s fears where right. Bill could end up treating Lisa like his own and maybe better, considering we know that he’s not the best father to his own kids. Do you think Libby was right?
