Beauty and the Beast - Chasing Ghosts - Review

19 Jul 2015

This episode of Beauty and the Beast saw the writers stepping up their game as the story finally started to move forward.  Not only did we have the return of Catherine's biological father Reynolds, but we also got some glimmers of Beast mythology, as well as some revelations and closure regarding Cat's mother.  All that, and Vincent learned a bit about what family means to him.  Add on a pretty decent cliffhanger, and we had the best episode in a while.

I'll be using some lyrics from Alesha Dixon's aptly named song "Chasing Ghosts" to supplement my review.

"Been chasing a ghost that doesn't exist
It's haunting my soul, I'm scared and alone
Been running away, no way to resolve
How did I get here? How can I get home?"*

Catherine's ghosts: I love the title of this episode because it beautifully epitomizes Catherine's emotional struggle this season.  She's right to be paranoid and proactive about anticipating superhuman threats, but she's also allowed those feelings to draw her further away from having a satisfying personal life.  While chasing the ghosts of those leads on the superhuman experiments and why these baddies are after Vincent, Cat's also been running from some baggage she didn't want to deal with.  We saw it on plain display this week, as the mere idea of seeing her mother's sisters made Catherine want to run for the hills (or, of course, indulge in her personal crutch of working cases before they even materialize fully).  That's because Catherine hasn't properly grieved her mother and had that issue complicated by learning that Vanessa was involved in the Muirfield experiments.  Cat's sadness at the loss of her mother is all tangled up in a lack of resolution mixed with anger and confusion over Vanessa's secret past.  I never doubted that Catherine knew better than to think her mother was some sociopathic mad scientist, but it was easier to feel that way than to take on the full burden of her grief.

So it's a good thing that Catherine finally had to face these issues head on, even though it led to a meltdown at her own party that was painful to watch.  Even the nefarious Reynolds could see the misery Cat was putting herself through over her mother, and told her to look in the box he'd given her to find details that would explain a lot.  By watching the video of her mother's last message to her, Catherine was able to learn her mother's true motives, feelings of guilt and fear, and even the fact that the message was filmed on Vanessa's last day alive.  As horrifying as that last part was, the pieces of the story finally fit together.  Catherine could grieve her mother and move on with her life, sharing those feelings with Heather and recommitting herself to her engagement to Vincent.  No wonder Cat had a hard time choosing a wedding venue, seeing as she had so much angst from the past dragging her down, and no time to breathe between all the adventures that fill her life.

"Sometimes I drift away, I melt into another place
It's a fraction of my mind and no it doesn't need a face
I meditate, I find the light, put the wrong I've done to right
It is part of giving time to get the best I can in life"*

The last scene in the church with Vincent and Catherine was really lovely and showed them back on the same page.  That just made the surprising attack on them in the church even more potently shocking and troubling, though the wait for next week would have been a tad more suspenseful if we hadn't seen Vincent and Cat seemingly escaping their cloudy peril.

"Fly over me, make it clear, help me see
No more turning back now 'cause I'm where I should be
No longer I'm lost in a dark fantasy
I followed on and I carried on now

Help me believe that the things that I need
Are high up with you, so much bigger than me
The story is written before I could breathe
Stay here beside me, help me to see"*
The big bads are raising the stakes: Some of the unknown villain(s)' shenanigans in this episode seemed designed to draw Vincent out (to what end?), and others were so drastic that the reason for them needs more explanation, like the outbreak of experimentation victims.  Reynolds, a solid smirking quasi-frenemy of a character, gave us some good clues  to some of what's going on.  As J.T. had deduced, the particular strain of beastly DNA at work is the same one that created Vincent, and moreover, the original beast serum: the proto-beast one.  I rejoiced immediately at the idea of finally getting some details on what the hell is going on this season, as well as resolution to all the mythology of Season 2 (Alistair and Rebecca, gems and collars, et al) that was built up and seemingly dropped afterwards.  So do the Big Bads need Vincent in order to understand how the proto-beast DNA works, and is this maybe something they might have wanted to get squared away before they started experimenting on innocents (tee hee)?  There's some holes in the story, but at least the writers are bringing the mythology of beasts and the fantasy part of the show back in a major way.
Vincent and his cousins: This was an interesting way to tie up some of the loose ends regarding Vincent's return from the dead, his lack of communication with his family, and his grief over the loss of his brothers.  I liked the way that this episode dealt with parallel stories of coming to terms with the loss of family members: Catherine and her mother; Vincent and his brothers.  J.T. tried really hard to get some of the remaining Kellers together to create some fun bro-tastic times leading up to Vincent's nuptials.  Unfortunately, the only one of Vincent's relatives who had more than a couple of lines was a sleazy politician more interested in strippers and using Vincent's fame to his own advantage than sincerely reconnecting with his cousin.  All of this made Vincent realize that of course, no one can replace his brothers, and he's not obligated to try to be closer with family members who lack the merit of making the effort worthwhile.  When it comes to who his real family is, there's no question that within the fab four, Vincent has found his own new little family unit.  Moreover, J.T. was a brother to Vincent in this episode, as he always is, looking out for his best friend's welfare and happiness at all times.

Remaining questions: This episode raised a lot of questions, but unlike the previous few, not all of them were frustrating or indicative of ongoing problems with the plotting of the show.  Let's review a few of them:
  • Who is conducting the superhuman experiments?
  • What is their endgame?  (Why are they doing this?)
  • What happens next in the scene at the church?  Do Vincent and Cat indeed escape, and what new peril awaits?
  • Who is the hooded villain seen in the preview for next week?  This looks exciting!
  • Who would have their bachelor's party or bridal shower before booking a venue for the wedding?  Is it just me thinking this is a little crazy?
  • When will we see Reynolds again and in what context?
  • How will the mythology of beasts and their history come back into play with the reintroduction of the proto-beast serum?
  • Now that Vincent and Catherine have found some resolution to their past family baggage, will it be easier for them to focus on enjoying their romance and engagement?
I'm looking forward to seeing some answers to these questions in the upcoming episodes, as well as other questions I probably forgot to include, which I'd love to see in the comments.

By the way, we heard more of Cat saying, "someone is experimenting on innocents," but maybe we've heard the last of "co-dependent"?! That would be awesome! :)

  2. Thanks for the review. KK could always bring on the water works, last scene brought back chills from the pilot. Looks like the best ratings of the season and awhile.

Absolutely, I was just watching the Season 2 finale of Smallville the other day and totally started tearing up at one of her scenes. KK is awesome and did a great job in this episode now that they finally gave her a scene with some real emotional heft to it.

  4. TNT reruns I'm guessing? A little off topic but "Slumber" is coming up, one of my favorites.

That is a great one! Yup, TNT reruns; I DVR and watch them even though I have the dvds as well. :)

  6. Great review, as usual. One comment on your first 2 question: I remember in Ep 5, Bob was telling Vincent, while chasing him in the woods, that his boss was not even aware that Vincent existed, or I might be mistaken??

Thanks! I think that's correct. I'm guessing, based on the scant info we've been given, that the big bads are looking for a beast with Vincent's abilities and proto-beast origins, but that they did not know it was specifically Vincent. But now that they sent that shooter right to his neighborhood, the villains seem to have more info on where to find him.

  8. I loved your review, Virginia. I loved this episode and agree that this is the best one of S3. Catherine's scene watching her mother on the tape explain some things to her was fantastic and KK did such a great job at sobbing, that you couldn't help but shed tears for her too. Very emotional. I was happy that a lot of things got cleared up as to Vincent's family and Catherine's family, and that a spark of the VinCat love came through in the church scene at the end between Vincent and Catherine. It may not have been steamy, but the spark was there as it was in S1. I also loved the fact that this episode ended in a cliff hanger and next week's episode "Both Sides Now" looks very exciting from the short clip they've shown. All in all, a lot of pieces are finally coming together and I just hope the writers keep up the momentum. Even the rating was the best yet. Truly an AWESOME episode.

  10. We still never found out who ran down Catherine's step father Thomas Chandler. Did Reynolds have anything to do with that since his photo was on Chandler's IPad if you think back to S1. Did Muirfield finish Chandler off in the hospital or did he die of his injuries. Why did he want to meet with Catherine? He seemed to want to see her very badly. Did Chandler want to tell Catherine about Reynolds? I think it's a hole in the story that should be closed at some point - maybe we can get Season 5 to unfold the rest of this story if there's no time to do it in S4. Wouldn't that be great?

  11. Yes, I would like to know what Tess did with the IPad. They did rid of Chandler pretty quick. He is on the new series Kill Joy. I am also glad that they kept Reynolds around. I think he knows a lot more than he is telling Vin/Cat. Who allowed him to change Vin into the super beast? He said he was the one that programmed Vin. I wish they had kept Agent Thomas since he knew about the new experiments. And he had the connection with Homeland Security The episodes are getting better and leaving us in suspense.

  12. Reynolds was running some of those experiments. He was the one that programmed Vincent to become a "super soldier". He had a lot to do with that since he kidnapped Vincent in the S1 cliffhanger. We no nothing yet about where Reynolds flew that helicopter to. I would have liked Agent Thomas to have been around to help Catherine and Vincent. Now they're on their own to find the Big Bad. I love the suspense that's building. Sure can't wait to find out what's going to happen in the next episode. I hope the writers keep giving us some answers as we move along to the questions we have from S1. Rob Stewart, who played Thomas Chandler, was also in the Nikita series. You would never have recognized him because they made his face all scarred up in Nikita. Ted Whitall and Rob Stewart are very good actors. I hope we see more of Daddy Reynolds - I bet he's a wealth of information.

  13. You know - you're right. I'm pretty sure that's what Bob told Vincent when they were in the woods. I also thought Bob said something to the effect "but now he will (meaning knowing that Vincent exists) and that should buy us what we want". (Both Bob and Carol wanted out of the Big Bad organization and wanted to live their own lives). They both thought that if they turned Vincent over to their "boss", it would buy them their freedom.

  14. Hello Virginia and thank you for the great review. Yours is the only one I read with real interest. It was a good episode and I had hopes that we are back on track.

As usual I have to point out some niggling problems, like why was there a convenient bike ramp built on the roof of this parking garage? And why could Vincent NOT blurr to save the guy from going over the ledge? He pulled Sam back up after he jumped off the ledge in 216. Or Catherine could have shot the tires out of the bike. Just saying.

And so much stuff is happening off stage, exciting stuff that we do not get to see or even hear about. Like Bob must have broken into Thomas Chandler's house and stolen that particular tape from Vanessa's things in the room behind the wine rack. I mean, how could HE be in possession of that tape otherwise? Vanessa made the tape, left to help Catherine and got killed. Bob was out of the country - he could not even have known about the tape! Oh, well.

Aw Smallville. I'm doing a binge right now! (I have the boxset, so no Netflix, BOOHYEAH) and I miss this show so much :(

I disagree with people that said Lana was on the show too long. KK was one of the highlights of SV for me

Thank you! :) Good point about the rooftop scene, definitely one of the less realistic sequences in the show, which is really saying something, haha! And yes, we still have so many unanswered questions even left over from Season 1. Some of these I'm just remembering now that I see them in the comments, and it's to be hoped that the writers will circle back and address them at some point.

Thanks, and no surprise on the ratings; it just goes to show how an uptick in quality can pay off. I loved how high stakes and heavily emotional this episode was after a comparatively light first part of the season. I'm hoping the overall story arc will kick into high gear from this point forward.

  19. Yeah, we will have 'high gear'! Alas, not in a good way in the next episode. I am really not happy with what they are doing to my lovely Catherine's character. So sad.

Ruh roh, that sounds ominous! So curious to see the next ep.

  21. Thanks Virginia, awesome review as always. It was a better episode and had the waterworks going for sure. Reminiscent of season 1 with the depth of emotion in some of the scenes. I really like that JT has a much bigger role, than last season and reminiscent again of season 1. I agree with the comment here that we are missing important information that seems to be happening off camera snd or makes it am it confusing, I really wish we would have had more of an explanation of BOb and Carol and why they needed to find the beast. I feel like it is a bit repetitive trying to find Vincent, sort of like what Muirfield was looking for all of season 1.

What would be a great exercise, though probably pointless as I don't feel Brad aKerns listens to the fans is to come up with all the unfinished business on this show so,they could answer or delve I to them in treason 4. I'm glad Cat had some resolution to Vanessa though I feel like she did already in season 1- Vincent told her numerous times her moms reason for why she did what she did, and that was early on in season 1 and later as well. There are so many thems and stories that could be explored and would feel like we finally had answers to.

I was dissapointed that when Vincent had his family, we didn't see his nephew. The only family connection he had for 2 seasons and we didn't see him.

Thanks again. Hopefully with this episode we are on the path to answering some season 3 questions.

  22. BK is definitely taking it into another direction. I suspect he wants to draw in more of the 18 - 25 yr. old male viewing audience. I think he has the task of getting the ratings up and this is the only way he knows how to do it. I also think he thought S1 was a drag. We'd better make ourselves comfortable and don't look forward to anything but a lot of action and violence. We might get a tender peck on the forehead or cheek once in awhile, but that will be about it in the romance department. Color much of the romance gone.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Can't wait for the next episode too, Virginia, which although it may be good with a lot of action, there's not much in the VinCat romance area, I guess from what I've heard.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes that portion of this show seems to be far down the list of what makes this show appealing; little does BK know that that is the number 1 reason why we fell in love with it in the first place. Sorry

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree. BK probably thinks S1 was boring because of the romance it had, but that was the best part of what made this series so different. I suspect he wants to get the ratings up and is trying to get the 18 - 25 male audience to get interested in the show. In his mind, the romance shouldn't be in it and he's taking it to violence and darkness. We'll see how it goes, but it's going to be an up and down type of story line with no romance as we've known it. No swooning and sighing I suspect.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Same here, i loved her.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was hoping that Vincent's nephew would show up, but then JT said that the nephew, Aaron, was overseas. I wanted them to bring back Aaron and get him romantically involved with Heather, but we'll never see that either.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That would be a great twist. Vincent needs at least one real family, I know that JT is his family but as you will see with the next epside that causes some issues too.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well that was his goal in season 2 and we all know how that went! This show kinda reminds me of ForestGumo- so much potential just bursting to get out and run!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wouldn't that have been great if the writers did bring Aaron back. He was a cutie too. There are so many ways the writers can go with this episode, but they do stuff that's totally opposite of what's expected by the fans. The show runner certainly doesn't listen to what the fans post about BATB. I'm glad you liked that thought too. I agree that JT is Vincent's best friend, but Vincent doesn't have one family member to connect with and that's pretty sad.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I wish they would assign him to "Arrow" and "The Flash". Then I'd like to see how the ratings would be for them. BK should be removed from this series because he doesn't know what it's about at all. I don't know how the cast and crew could be happy with the way it's going. I don't think he asks for their input like Sherri and Jennifer used to do.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If nothing else, even though I know he wouldn't, he should do it for the BaTB fandom, we are a good dedicated, smart fandom and have stuck with the show and kept him with a job, some would have just given up but no matter what has happened the fandom has not missed a beat in whatever has needed to be done. We have such a huge social media presence, bigger than most shows and we are a small fandom. Too bad that's he wouldn't just respect what we do and honour that by making the show what it really is: a unique love story.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh, I definitely agree with you there. You should see them on Twitter - they're just happy we got a Season 3 and 4. We have stuck with the series through his horrible Season 2 - we could have dumped the series then, but we didn't. He strikes me as the type of person who doesn't care what the fans want. He's going to do what he wants to do with this series. Then if it doesn't get renewed after S4, it's not his fault and he'll say it was a stupid series. Too bad because it could be the best series on The CW which I think it is anyway. We did really work hard to keep the show and we succeeded - that in itself should give him a clue that the fans of BATB know what they want and what they're talking about. Like you said, it's as much a fantasy as the beast we see on the show.
