Agent Carter - SpoilerTV Comic-Con Interviews w/ Hayley Atwell, James D'Arcy & Executive Producers

“Agent Carter” is gearing up for season two, where some changes are in store. We talked to three of the show’s executive producers for details. And we got a chance to interview stars Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter) and James D’Arcy (Jarvis) on camera. Our video of them is posted below – and boy, were they charming. The two of them have incredible chemistry together. They joke around and play off each other constantly.

But before you watch the video, here’s what we learned from the executive producing team of Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas and Chris Dingess.

First of all, the show is moving to Los Angeles for season two as Peggy is called to investigate a murder. Butters teases, “The investigation ends up being a much bigger, more Marvel-y kind of subject matter.”

Jarvis is heading west as well. Fazekas says defense contractors were prevalent in Los Angeles in the 1940s. So the writers decided to move Howard Stark out to California for government contract work. And while he’s there, Stark starts a movie studio. All of this will keep Jarvis busy.

The new location will give some of the characters fresh outlooks. “When you talk about Hollywood, it’s a place where people move to sort of reinvent themselves, and we touch on that,” Dingess reveals.

With the Los Angeles shift, the feel of the series will also change. Butters tells us, “One of the things that we’re really excited about is that you get to show the Hollywood glamour and the 1940s movie scene and the kind of underlying tones of a film noir.”

Also of note: Anna Jarvis will no longer be a mysterious voice. Her character finally makes an appearance on screen. Characters like hers will introduce new relationships for the show. But on the other side of the spectrum, Dingess tells us, “Existing relationships that Peggy has with different characters will become more complicated.”

Of course, the relationship between Peggy and Jarvis remains the central relationship of the series. That is due in large part to the chemistry between the actors. Dingess says, “As we were writing season one and we got them together, by episode three we really had a very strong sense of their chemistry. Everyone wanted to milk that chemistry for all it was worth.”

Butters adds, “They’re so incredibly charming together. And I love seeing a man and a woman [on TV] having great chemistry without it being necessarily sexual. I think it’s just such a nice relationship you don’t always see on television.”

You can check out Hayley Atwell and James D’Arcy’s great chemistry below. Please excuse the jolty camera at the beginning. It was briefly knocked down during the interview.

  2. Thanks, Tonya.

I love this quote. It's too bad a lot of the fans watching tv these days are too focused on sex to appreciate this fact.

  3. You are so lucky Tonya, thanks for this. They seem to have so much fun together. And I have a massive crush on Hayley Atwell, it's crazy ahah

  4. Great interview. It looks like they have been friends for years instead of only meeting last year.

  5. I love these 2, they had a lot of fun at Comic Con posting dubsmash videos with the AOS cast and generally being hilarious. I have a crush on both of them.

The Cleopatra stuff was so funny.

I look forward to meeting Mrs Jarvis and her friendship with Peggy.

  6. Thank U for this one Tonya! I love those 2. Such a nice friendly chemistry.
And I never noticed how blue James eyes are. WoW! He certainly gets around. It is quite strange seeing him in "normal" clothes wouldn't recognize him.
Hayley's smile :D just great. Such a tremendous energy. Can't wait for S02

Looking forward to Anna Jarvis and her bonding with Peggy and I've got a feeling she isn't Howard's biggest fan.

I love that quote, too! I know what you mean. That non-sexual chemistry is pretty special in this show!

You're so welcome, omabin! I really felt lucky on this one. I love Agent Carter and Hayley Atwell! I don't blame you for having a major crush on her! And she and James really did seem to have so much fun together!

Thanks, Babar. It really does look like that, doesn't it? They look like old friends who have known each other for years! Really cool to see.

I was so busy at Comic Con I didn't get to check out anything else outside of what I was doing so I'll have to look for those dubsmash videos. They sound awesome! I loved that Cleopatra stuff, too! So funny. And I also can't wait to see Peggy meeting Mrs Jarvis! More women bonding is a good thing.

You're welcome, Spindae2! I also love these two. They were just so fun together, it was great to watch. He really does have blue eyes, didn't he? I also was surprised at how young he looked in person. In "normal" clothes, he looks much different from his character! Hayley had the best smile and laugh! You could tell how much fun she was having!

So much to look forward to now in S2. Seeing Anna and Peggy will be great - and you might be right about her feelings toward Howard. I'm excited to see! :)

  13. I just love the charisma they bring to the table. I think I wouldn't notice Jarvis on the street but James has so much energy. And with just this fact U see how much he contains himself in the part and what a great actor he is.

They did such a great job in S01 and I think they've restrained themselves a bit. They are expanding for S02 and it should be amazing. January seems to far away.

  14. She is just so gorgeous and he's adorable. I can't wait for S2, mainly because of their friendship. It's nice to see Peggy will be friends/friendly with Jarvis's wife.
Congrats Tonya, this was well done. I would have been starstruck.

  15. Someone did a round-up post of the dubsmash videos http://jemmaswan.tumblr.com/post/123915907634 I seriously laughed so much at them.

  16. That was a fun interview to watch. Those two have such great chemistry. I'm excited for the revamp. Following your posts from Comicon has made me want to check out at least one new show and start a couple I haven't watched, but this one I started from the beginning. I'm glad it's coming back and moving to 1940s Hollywood, with the glamour and seedy underbelly that has been explored before in movies and TV. I'm interested to see what they do with it.

Thanks, Toni. I was a little starstruck myself. :) I love their characters' friendship. It's the crux of the show for me. I'm excited she'll be friends with Jarvis' wife, too. Oh, season 2 can't come fast enough! And you're right - Hayley is gorgeous and James is adorable. Love them!

You're so right - he does have a lot of energy! And that's a great point about how it points to him containing himself in the part and what a great actor he is. Seeing his real personality, you see how different he is in the role. Great actors make you feel like they area their role. He does a wonderful job of that since he is actually very different than his role.

I also love that they're expanding for season 2. I think the film noir look will be fun to see. After all, this show does such an amazing job with a specific visual feel. January definitely seems too far away!

Thanks, magnutude! Glad you liked the interview. I think you're definitely right - the spark between the actors really makes the writing/show pop! I definitely had some fun down there. What a great time. :)

Thanks, Jack! Their chemistry was tangible. They just had so much fun together and it wasn't forced at all. I really love this show! Won't 1940s Hollywood be fun to see? I can't wait! Like you say, it will encompass the glamour and maybe the "seedy underbelly," too! Sounds so fun. I don't want to wait for season 2! Glad you've enjoyed all the Comic Con posts. Hope you enjoy whatever new shows you add to your TV schedule!
