Scream - First Look At The New Mask *Updated*

14 Jun 2015

Update: 14th June Here is an HQ version of the mask.

HQ Version

Update 1:
Thanks to richard dower for the heads up.
One way that MTV’s “Scream” will assert its independence, Blotevogel continued, is by making the mask part of the killer’s mystery, instead of “a $1.99 costume the killer grabs in a costume shop and threw on just to be anonymous, or to scare people.”

“TV has to expand upon the 90 minutes of a movie,” she explained. “We’ve got to find a bigger mystery so that we have things to dig in to. Our mask had to have more meaning than just a scary disguise that the killer puts on… I always compare it to how the Cylons had to be updated for ’Battlestar Galactica. You’ve got to be able to take some creative license to create a bigger mystery because as it says in the pilot, you can’t do a slasher movie as a TV series… unless you make it more, unless you start to care about the characters, unless you have a bigger mystery behind what’s going on, and that’s what we needed to do to the mask.”

“That mask humanizes him and demonizes him at the same time,” she said. “We get to learn why he was wearing it, and that it was a part of trying to fix what actually made him a monster, but the actually fact of wearing it makes him look like a monster — so it’s interesting how it bridges that idea.”

Original Post:

While the film franchise featured a killer wearing a now-iconic Ghostface mask, producers for the small-screen version decided to go for a fresh new look to alert viewers that this is not the same old Scream. “The [original] mask is so iconic. If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience,” says exec producer Jaime Paglia (Eureka).

But the mask does play with the franchise’s love of horror classics. Explains exec producer Jill Blotevogel (Harper’s Island): “It evokes some of the Jason hockey mask and the white Michael Myers mask, but it’s still first and foremost evocative of the Scream mask. It’s sort of a reinvention while also paying homage.”

Most importantly, it passes muster with original director Wes Craven, now an executive producer on the series. Says Craven, “The new mask is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction. It also ties into the story, which I won’t give away.” Now we just want to know who’s underneath.

  2. Thoughts…

    1) I’m glad those rumors about some kind of flesh-based, “Leatherface”-esque mask weren’t true.

    2) I can see, as they mention in the article, how themask evokes Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees as well as Ghostface.

    3) I’m curious about how the mask ties into the overall story.

    4) All that said, it does lack some of the oomph, the personality of the Ghostface mask.

  5. I hope those brown parts aren't part of the mask and are just holding it in place or something.

  10. Nothing could beat the original ghostface mask for me but I could live with that one. (minus those weird brown bits)

I'm interested to find out how it ties into the story, hopefully that will make it more acceptable (couldn't think of a better word)

I hope Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette are going to make a cameo at least...

  12. I read in TV Guide that that the events of the movie didn't take place in the world of the show.

  13. Of course the original mask is the best :) That's why I'm glad they didn't use it in the series, I don't want them to ruin it
They decided to make the mask more human like for the series, there must be a reason and I'm guessing it'll tie to the story.
Maybe it supposed to look like someone or the killer made it as a reference to his favorite movies (=Friday & Halloween).

It better be the same voice on the phone or this show will be unwatchable.

  20. While the old mask is iconic and didn't really need replacing, I can live with the new one. It still reminds me of the old mask and of it ties well into the story that's even better.

why not just use the original mask?

  22. Maybe they'll keep the knife wipe lol.

  24. Well I like it. While almost emotionless compared to Ghostface's it also has the open mouth to remind us of the old one. I find it creepier than the original and that is something that works for me.

  25. “The new mask is cool and scary" yeah, right.
I hate it, hate it! The original is iconic, it will never be replaced, they shoudl've kept it.

  26. This is terrible. Why didn't they keep the original mask?

  28. Did you not read what the article said? They explain why they changed the mask.

  29. Harpers island did just find without there having to be a mystery behind a mask. It's a shame they didn't stick with the original mask. But oh well, fingers crossed the show is alright.
