  1. I really loved it. The special effects were great, the ship was awesome and the cinematography was excellent.

"I just carved out their eyes and left them for my step mother to find, Bitch!” - Best Line of the Episode!!

Loved the leading lady, she was so cool.
Zoie Palmer as the Android was great, her mannerisms were on point!

The score playing during the scene on the smaller ship was awesome!

That ending, great twist. Cannot wait for the next episode!!

  2. Dark Matter is exactly the kind of show the space opera format needed to give it new life. Excitedly waiting for the next episode. I can't fault a single thing about that premiere.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I really like it Zoie Palmer back on screen yes and she played android very well I like the crew beside Zoie Palmer character the leading lady might be my favorite the special affects were good the ship looks awesome the twist at the end was great

  4. Loved it! Zoie's performance as The Android was just amazing. Each of the character's brings something to the show and the special effects are gorgeous. Looking forward to the next episode!

GREAT NEW SHOW. The series is incredible. So many secrets.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Loved it! Don't get all the negative reviews I've been reading. Yes, the characters are a little bit cliché, but c'mon, let them grow. They at least have great chemistry, which is what you want to see in the first episode. Not as good as the premiere of SGU, but still very promising.

  7. I've been waiting for this premiere and now that's I've it my only complaint is that it wasn't 2 hours! Excellent start to this series now let's count the ways:
    1) Zoie Palmer is a unbelievable actress (the woman could read the phonebook to me). The "Android" is already my favorite character.
    2) "Two" was great without over doing it (more Michelle Rodriguez less Milla Jovovich). The actress brought a good mix of acting and action to her character...................she reminds me of Lexa Doig.
    3) The ship, the incidental music, and FX were very good and much better than I expected.
Fellow posters I for one am looking forward to this series and for those of you who haven't read the comics you are up for a lot of surprises this season. (Here it come) 4 THE PALMERIST, I am still "The Nobody"!!!

  8. I'm in love!

That was such an amazing premiere, the wait was so worth it. I'm also feeling so nostalgic that the first space opera we've had in years is from the same team that created the last one!

The cast were just perfect, it felt like they've been working together for years. I loved the characters although I'd imagine they'll be going through a lot of changes as the show goes on.

The visuals were great, I got such chills when the ship went to FTL, it's been too long since I've heard a show say "entering FTL"!

I loved the music too, it changed a lot through out the episode where most shows have the same generic type of music all the time.

I'm just praying this does well because it's too good to lose!

  9. My first ever Space Opera and it BLEW MY SOCKS OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow just FREAKING WOW!!!! Okay just saying straight off the bat, Five is one CREEPY girl LOL and why isn't her file on the computer? I'm keeping my eye on her and i just thought of this; why is a little girl aboard a ship of what we just found out: a ship of murderers. Special Effects have really come s long way, they're incredible.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Except it gives you nightmares of Five LOL. No you're right it's amazing, Syfy really IS coming backs after so long.

    ReplyDelete
  11. She also LOOKS like Lexa Doig LOL

    ReplyDelete
  12. Is FTL like Hyperspace in the Star Wars franchise? I was confused.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes it is, it stands for Faster Than Light. My definition of each one comes from Stargate, where the difference was Hyperspace opened up a subspace window to travel through, and FTL didn't, FTL is closer to Warp from Star Trek. I don't know what the rules are like in Star Wars, I didn't really enjoy those movies so didn't pay much attention :P

  14. I told you that you would not be disappointed by this show. It is everything a lover of space operas could have hoped for to bring back this amazing format. I too hope it does really well in the ratings. It was blowing up on Twitter, so hopefully that will translate to some good solid ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I never should have doubted you! I guess after all this time it just sounded too good to be true. With SyFy promoting the block as SyFyFridays again hopefully they're willing to give the shows there a fair shot to build it up properly. 12 Monkeys was getting 0.2's so we know they're standard is pretty low for Fridays at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Five is awesome in the most creepy of ways. I love the way Jodelle is playing her. I'm so happy this was the show to relaunch space operas. Killjoys looks good, but not Dark Matter good. It was a great idea on the part of SyFy to launch this show first.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If a show doesn't grab me in the first minutes it's really hard for me to take it seriously afterwards unless it does something truly amazing. When Dark Matter had me hooked within the first 30 seconds I knew this was a winner.

12 Monkeys is an amazing show too, so I hope that Dark Matter and Killjoys can really build up Friday nights and when 12 Monkeys returns next year it will benefit from the extra exposure the night is getting now. I'm going to be nervously awaiting the ratings release for the premiere. I hope they are higher than 12 Monkeys. SyFy did put a lot of promotional muscle behind Dark Matter, so fingers crossed it helped.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I said this on Twitter and I'll say it here too. They have to get Lexa Doig to guest star. I need a android showdown between her and Zoie Palmer.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It had me hooked straight away as well, the opening reminded me of that scene in the beginning of BSG where the camera slowly moves in on Galactica

Dark Matter has a fair amount in it's favour, getting a premiere as a lead-in two weeks in a row, being promoted heavily and then there's the Stargate draw as well which really helped get the word around, building off such a huge fanbase. Nothing to do now but wait.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The visuals are amazing, but that opening one was by far my favorite. The way they pushed in slowly on the ship as the music played in the background was perfection. You're right about it being a lot like Battlestar Galactica in that way, but I personally think the visuals in Dark Matter will be better than BSG. Technology has just evolved so much and Dark Matter is really benefiting from it.

Defiance lost me halfway through Season 2, but it is still a strong show for the network so it's a good sign Dark Matter was given the premiere spot after it. Dark Matter really does have a ton of things in its favor and I hope it runs as long and as successfully as Stargate did.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That'd be so awesome, especially with Roger Cross being on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ok, that was pretty epic, I'm loving it! Finally something good to watch during the summer, while I wait for the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Lost Girl and my other Fall/Spring favorite shows!

Zoie Palmer alone kept me for this show! And Android is just so snarky at time! ''Would you like me to show you?'', lol, yeah, nice attempt at humor when missiles are coming your way! ^_^ Loved it! Not to mention her fighting scene: She pretty much took down One, Three, Four and Six all by herself, in a very epic way!

Yet, somehow, I think Five could take her down in a one-on-one combat. That girl is SCARY, but I'm loving it. Well on her way to be my favorite character. Also, since Five is the techie and Android is, well, an android, I'm kinda hopeful for interactions between those two in the future! :)

And finally, the big mystery. Why Five wasn't in that dossier at the end. Clearly she's the scariest of them all, there must be something, right?

Anyway, can't wait for next episode, for an announcement about being renewed, too! Dark Matter is off to a great start! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah definitely has to be something, i mean that whole tumor thing, her dream. Who is this girl?!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah it's weird, usually i need at least half the episode to get me hooked on something but with this show i was hooked almost immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Defiance lost me after the season 2 premiere but I went back and binge-watched it. I thought the season 3 premiere was the strongest the show has ever been, if it rates well I'd recommend trying it again.

Hopefully Dark Matter will break the long lasting trend of SyFy shows not making it past 5 seasons. I think Stargate SG-1 was the last one to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Stargate was the longest running sci-fi show before Smallville beat them right?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Stargate SG-1 was, but if you include all the Stargate shows then Stargate still holds that title. Supernatural has overtaken Smallville now though right?

    ReplyDelete
  28. The problem with SyFy shows not making it past 5 seasons is that most of them film in Canada. They have a weird tax break up there that only goes through 5 seasons. That's why shows like Rookie Blue and Lost Girl got extra long season 5's to milk the last bit of said tax credit. After 5 seasons a lot of shows, especially expensive scifi shows, end because the loss of the tax break doesn't make continued filming profitable.

I keep telling myself I'm going to go back and give Defiance another shot, but I don't know. I'd have to start over with Season 2 and binge it to really see if it could pull me back in.

I'm hoping that people tune in and support Dark Matter because it is a show that deserves a long run.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wait there's TWO Stargates? Yeah i think so.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ah so that's why, I didn't know that. Kind of strange that they don't just extend the seasons like MTV does now instead.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like that they opened it in the middle of the action instead of a slow open. That really helped with the immediate draw in. This was a prime example of a perfect premiere.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh so was that why it was much easier to get hooked on it?

    ReplyDelete
  33. There are 3, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, each running for 10,5 and 2 seasons respectively as well as a couple of TV movies. There's Stargate Infinity as well which was a one season animated show but that's not connected to the rest of them at all.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Scifi shows are very heavy effects shows and that eats up a lot of budget, so usually extending seasons isn't profitable either. Canada is a good place to film because of that tax credit, but it does also hurt after it expires and has cost fans a lot of good shows that could have kept going.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Huh and you saw all of them? were the latter ones spin-offs of SG-1?

    ReplyDelete
  36. ANY show? not just Syfy shows?

    ReplyDelete
  37. For me jumping right into the action is more of a pull. Some people like a slow buildup, but for scifi shows I want to get right into the story.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The tax credit is 5 seasons regardless of genre. That's why Rookie Blue was bought for a 22 episodes 5th season and even though it's being billed as a 6th season in the US it is still technically part of the 5 year deal in Canada because it was all filmed as one really long season. Any show that films in Canada and goes past 5 seasons will see a substantial hike in cost.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Except for Infinity yes, and yes, Stargate Atlantis began after Stargate SG-1's 7th season, and Stargate Universe began after Stargate Atlantis ended.

    ReplyDelete
  40. wow. so they're all killers, but one of them owns that pendant and erased the others
who do you guys think it is?

    ReplyDelete
  41. The "Zoie - Droid" kicked ass "LITERALLY"..............One, Three, Four, and Six all went down EASILY! It's great that the casting for "Android" was open to all genders with Zoie winning the part.........the subtle 'droid "snark/sarcasm was brilliant/funny. Can't wait to see what Zoie Palmer does this season. The ship is pretty cool, but am I the only one who thought of "Moya" (Farscape) when they jumped to FTL speed/travel ie: Faster Than Light speed/travel? This premiere should have been 2 hours...........seriously!
4 DARKNESS 2 MATTER or PALMERMANIA, I am Nobody!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sorry to be ''that guy'', but I'm pretty sure neither Smallville nor Stargate are the longest-running sci-fi show ever. For starters, Doctor Who had 26 seasons, then halted for a while then got renewed as a new serie, with currently 8 seasons and still going.

I'm not saying that Doctor Who is the longest-running sci-fi show ever, but even if you count ALL the Stargates and ignore the new serie for Doctor Who, the british serie still wins.

    ReplyDelete
  43. FTL is now kinda the norm when it comes to sci-fi shows, especcially space operas. It's the most common terminology, and I think even real-world scientists uses it (althought there are obviously no application for it. But when discussing theories about things going Faster Than Light, I'm pretty sure they use FTL...)

And, yes, the fight scene was epic! But somehow I think Five would be harder for Android to take down one-on-one. That's one scary girl! :p

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't watch Supernatural, but hasn't it been on longer than Smallville now? In terms of length of seasons I think Supernatural now reigns supreme, or at least it will very soon. As for Doctor Who, I also don't watch that show (yes, I know that is a bad thing for a scifi geek to admit), but I do believe if you look at a world wide scale of scifi shows it's certainly the longest running series ever. So Supernatural for US and Doctor Who for overall I believe are the winners.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I guess only American ones are the ones that count, but wow completely forgot about that black and white age of Doctor Who, did you see that too or just the in-color one?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Since Five wasn't on the file probably her.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yes, fellow poster............."Five" clearly wins this years "Scariest Girl Award", but Jodelle Ferland did have some practice being scary like Alessa in Silent Hill (with Rahda Mitchell/Laurie Holden) and Lilith in Case 39 (with Renee Zellweger)..............I recommend both films, if you haven't already seen them. Nobody 4 PALERMANIA!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Were they normal spin-offs? What i mean is were characters introduced in a backdoor pilot or did characters move to the other show?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think Space Patrol holds the record at 1110 episodes over 5 years back in the '50s. Nine hundred or so of those were only 15 minute long daily live shows, but that still works out at 300 or so episode of a comparable show.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It was better than I thought it would be, and I like the actors. I just hope they do have some real aliens on this show.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Loved it... really enjoyed the intro of the characters (especially the android) and the overarching mystery/coupled with the very cool twist at the end. Tried not to make any comparisons, but it's hard not to see 3 being a "Jane (from Firefly) type" - just not nearly as likable, and the kid as Kaylee-esque to a degree... and couldn't help thinking about that the plot might turn out along the lines of "Total Recall", where a villain(s) are mind wiped to infiltrate/betray/do bad stuff and after finding out who they are/were decide that they don't want to be the old versions of themselves and become better-ish versions... or something like that, but I guess we'll have to wait and see....the ep grabbed me and definitely has me coming back for more.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Nah, I only saw the new serie, honestly. I tried to find the older episodes, but that's kinda difficult. Found one once, so I did saw one episode of their black-and-white period, but that's it! :p

    ReplyDelete
  53. Actually the Pilot is a 2-parter. Indeed they should've aired both parts of the pilot at once (not Defiance)

    ReplyDelete
  54. The music was very Glitch Mob-esque, to the point where I had to look up if they were providing the soundtrack, but no such luck on Google.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Was it really good? I wasn't even going to watch Syfy anymore after losing Being Human and now Lost Girl and Continuum having it's final seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  56. It was better than really good,it was fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Love, love LOVED it! I knew it was going to be good but it surpassed my expectations! Since Stargate and Fringe ended i've been waiting for a show to hook me and Dark Matter has certainly done that! there wasn't one thing i wished they did differently. My only complaint is that it went by too fast.

I finally have a show i'm excited about and i'm thrilled its by Mazzolli and Mullie!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Hope you stick with it!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Why does every story like this have to have the arrogant asshole character? Always unneeded, a waste of plot and screentime.

    ReplyDelete
  60. i wasn't sure about it, but with all the good reviews i'm gonna watch it *clicks on the episode*

    ReplyDelete
  61. The Season 7 finale of Stargate SG-1 was kind of a back door pilot but not really. They were all new characters for the most part but some recurring characters from SG-1 did move over to Atlantis. Universe had an entirely new cast. There were crossovers with main characters as well though.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Five is underage, it is possible that she has no criminal record like the others. Or it could be more of nefarious reason like others have suggested, that she is deleted the other memories. Or perhaps Five is related to someone else on the ship. The actress that plays Two is too young in real life to have a 15-16 year old kid, but Two seems older than the age of the actress. My prediction is that Five it Two's daughter and the crazy story Five told Two is what Two did to someone.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I guess every story needs its team conflict and subsequent redemption arc (what's the O/U on when he has to protect Five or The Android and we find out he's really a big softie on the inside?) but yeah, I feel you. Hope that one gets turned around early enough in the series.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh ok, so Universe was like Once Upon a Time in Wonderland?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Not exactly, in the pilot a lot of main characters from the other shows are in it and there are one or two more crossovers after that as well. But for the most part yes, the main cast of Universe are all new characters.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Over-under, it's a sports betting term. In tv show terms, say I pick Episode 5, people would bet on whether it happens before or after that. So the O/U would be Episode 5. Not sure why I used it for non-sports stuff, just came out! Sorry for the confusion

    ReplyDelete
  67. Nah it's fine and pretty cool, i'd go with when an episode is Three-centric.

    ReplyDelete
  68. My favorite SyFy premiere in years!

Sure some of the characters were a bit stereotyped, but overall I enjoyed them all. The amnesia thing was a nice starting point, but I'm glad we got information on them by episodes end.

In fact that reveal was a nice surprise!
It sets up nice conflict (internal and external) for future episodes.

I believe I'm in for the long haul on this one.
That's not something I say after only one episode on SyFy all too often.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm always a bit skeptical when it comes to Syfy but they have really turned themselves around as of late with 12 Monkeys and now, Dark Matter. I think this is another home run for them!

The VFX were really well done! Especially for a space opera show (the last one I saw being Firefly so it's been a while since I've seen this genre on television). You felt like you were immediately immersed inside the ship with all the characters, it was awesome. There was also lots of tension with whether or not to trust The Android and deciding to give their weapons to the settlers. Great action sequences as well!

Now the characters. I liked them all really, but Five definitely stood out to me the most! I love a character who at first, seems to be the weakest link but actually holds all the secrets and she seems to be someone with the ability to have some powers, which draws me to her even more. Also she's a mechanic! Three was your typical cocky and arrogant anti-hero but I have a feeling that once they develop his character more, then the audience will fall in love with him. For now, he's going to have to learn to get along with these people. Two is definitely the boss lady of the Raza and I love it. She's very determined but also someone you do not want to mess with whatsoever. Six has that personality of a no nonsense badass but deep down inside, he's very caring. I loved his dynamic with Five throughout the episode and I think that they're going to develop a nice friendship between the two. One and Four (badass sword fighter!) were also really great. Looking forward to seeing what's inside that box that Four has and what's behind that large door that Three found. Looks to be someplace that holds a lot of important information to the crew.

The Android was badass!! From her fight scenes with Five and Six, to her attitude, she was a very interesting character. She's definitely going to become a vital member to the crew down the line and I can't wait to learn more about her and see her grow as a character.

That plot twist at the end was really surprising! Having our crew actually be criminals and not have all nice qualities to them is very interesting turn and definitely makes you want to tune in even more! Wonder why Five remains a mystery. She's really going to surprise everyone I think. Especially with all these dream sequences she's having and just her fascinations towards everything.

Overall, this premiere was awesome and I'm looking forward to the crew's journey and learning more about them! With a great, Dark Matter definitely has my attention and I can't wait to see more. For now, I'll be anxiously awaiting the ratings! *crosses fingers*

    ReplyDelete
  70. Chiming in to say that I also wish that we had been given a 2 hour intro episode. Fantastic so far, very suspenseful--can't wait for next week's episode. Ad astra, syfy!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Panagiotis Karatasios13 June 2015 at 20:38

Very dissapointed. Mediocre acting, indifferent dialogue, derivative story, cheap cgi. Perhaps syfy must start paying a little more money in actors and cgi and find some decent writer. Now only The expanse can save them.

    ReplyDelete
  72. That was so good. It was much better than I thought it would be, so looking forward to the next ep. The characters r great and I can't wait to learn more about all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It certainly has that Firefly vibe to it.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Liked the characters, had a great hook and plot twist, but I think they could of built up to the ending better! The dialogue had it's moments, the visuals had both good and bad, the acting I thought was decant for a pilot (nobody over acted, personalities felt legit), and had a lot of fun fight scenes and who doesn't love samurai androids in space? XD

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yep.
I got a Firefly meets Farscape (less Muppets) vibe.

    ReplyDelete
  76. To me it felt more Andromeda meets Farscape with a tiny bit of Firefly sprinkled in.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I was getting a Firefly meets SGU vibe. I haven't seen much of Farscape and Andromeda though, I stopped watching both, planned to go back to them but still haven't.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I watched Andromeda loyally as it aired, but didn't watch Farscape until it was off the air. Both are really good shows to binge watch. I feel like Dark Matter has a lighter vibe then SGU had.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It reminded me of Firefly too - minus Captain Gorgeous. lol

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yeah I can see that...
I was never a huge fan of Andromeda, but now that you mention it I can see it.... Android/ Ship connection and all that!

I think like many Sci-Fi shows, depending on what character or plot point one concentrates on they can compare it whatever other show they think of.... Not a bad thing really, just how Sci-Fi tends to be.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I thought it was lighter than SGU as well, darker than Firefly though. I thought the interior of the ship looked a lot like Destiny, and between the stasis pods, the FTL and the crew who doesn't really seem to know what they're doing I was just thrown back to SGU.

    ReplyDelete
  82. That was a great review, Justin. I hope you can find the time to do one every week.

I particularly loved your assessment of the characters. ( I'm also very curious to see whose dream five was having!)

And perhaps a loss of memory will give our crew a chance to redeem themselves. Most seem to have many good qualities.

I'm really looking forward to following this one.

    ReplyDelete
  83. A lot of the space opera shows have similarities. Firefly, Andromeda, SGU, Farscape, Battlestar Galactica, and now Dark Matter. Just based on the confining nature of the space opera format and only so many ship configurations you get quite a few visual and technological similarities.

    ReplyDelete
  84. This show has an incredible amount of promise. I'm glad to see the space opera genre returning after such a long hiatus.

Be sure to check out Lindsey's review of the show. She had a great analysis of the episode. http://www.spoilertv.com/2015/06/dark-matter-pilot-review-6-characters.html

    ReplyDelete
  85. Thanks, Aimee. I definitely will. I don't know how I missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I felt that vibe too.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Scifi at its best! In space, In a Space ship, with a small crew, with the required skills to survive.
I really liked all of them so far, and the turnaround reveal at the end was epic.
They were not the saviors but the killers.
This makes me think what kind of Killer was One for him to have this much morals lol. a
Four believable, he Probably won't care.
Two & Four are gonna be fun to watch, Six is so far same as before but let see what he brings.
And five who is she? Scifi Character info said she is not telepathic, then who is she.

Now I don't care what the crew does, so long as they stick together and travel in space, cuz well they got a Spaceship!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Thanks bj! That's very kind. And yeah after thinking about it, this may actually be a good thing and they possibly have the chance to vindicate themselves in the long run. There's also the possibility that the computer may be trying to manipulate and that's not really their identities at all. I've been toying around that theory all day now XD

    ReplyDelete
  89. Exactly! The last space opera show I saw was Firefly which was about 4 or 5 years ago when I watched it! So you can imagine I needed something to fill that void and I think Dark Matter is the perfect choice. I have a feeling it's definitely going to fill my Firefly shaped heart very quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Dark Matter is definitely what us space opera fans have needed for a very long time. From what I know of and have seen of Killjoys it seems good but not Dark Matter level of good. I'll give it a watch too but I don't know that the investment level will be as high. This definitely fills the void left by 12 Monkeys and most recently Bitten on Friday nights.

I hope Dark Matter will have a very long run because I am already invested in these characters. Next Friday can't get here fast enough.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Less Farscape except the FTL drive...Though that could be Andromeda influence too. The big corps against the small guys that is all Firefly plus the rogues to help straight from Joss Whedon.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I don't necessarily see the Farscape aspects in the pilot so much as where I can see the series going in the future.

In Farscape you had the prison ship Moya and its escaped prisoners versus The Peacekeepers and in Dark Matter it's setting up to have the rouge assassins on the Raza versus whoever controls the mining companies. If my assumption that the Raza's crew will turn against their original orders is correct then I'm sure they will become targets like the Moya crew was.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Definitely targets, Since the next promo show other ships like theirs showing up.
