Netflix Plans To Add Italy, Portugal And Spain This Year

7 Jun 2015

Netflix continues its global expansion with plans to add Italy, Portugal and Spain to the company’s membership roster by October this year. That will make more than 50 countries where the streaming service will be available. Netflix shares closed at a record high of $633.22 Friday, up 85% this year.

Netflix had 62.3 million subscribers worldwide as of the end of March, including 20.9 million outside the U.S. Growth has leveled off in the U.S. but the company is expanding rapidly internationally and hopes to be in 200 countries worldwide within 2 years. Netflix currently is available in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Europe, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and Latin America.

  5. I heard Portugal will have the same content as France. So... Netflix Original series plus some more US Series, but definitely way less than the content available for UK.

  11. Just a quick question, if I get Netflix and I live in Germany does that mean I only get the shows in German or can I also get the new shows from the Netflix in the USA? For example with Sense8. Did they release it in all countries or just in the USA? :)

Finally it´s coming to Spain, yay!!

  14. Sense8 is a Netflix original show like House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Daredevil which means every country gets them. But non Netflix programming is different in every country.

  15. I often worry about companies growing too big and taking over the world (I'm looking at you, Amazon), but with Netflix I'm happy that they are growing. I live in the US, and I was an earlyish adopter of streaming, so it doesn't affect me a lot, but I'm glad that people in other countries can now get the service. Netflix is great.

I believe it actually depends on if the individual countries have licensed it or not.

Orange Is The New Black nearly ran into problems in Australia because Cable TV had the exclusive broadcast rights to seasons 1 and 2. So for a while, Netflix Australia was only able to confirm that they would get season 3.

Like a week before launch though they apparently found a way to buy back the rights to seasons 1 and 2 and it became a launch title (thankfully).

They're still having issues with some of the titles they bought off others that were once cancelled (The Problem Solverz, Trailer Park Boys, Dreamworks Dragons ect)

  17. I guess that is the one problem with some countries getting Netflix late, they may have sold their programmes elsewhere. I wonder if considering the problems they have had in Australia they will keep a tighter control on that now.

  18. Add Poland, then we'll talk.

  19. That is exactly what I thought :( I have Sky but they don't air a lot of shows and if they do it's 6 months after it premiered in the USA or even longer :( but thanks for the help :)

  22. They promised it like 2-3 years ago and still nothing so don't count on it. I gave up on them last year.
