The Flash - The Trap - Review

2 May 2015

After the big cliffhanger last week, we knew this would be an episode to remember. With Barry and friends discovering the Time Vault they can no longer deny the truth. Harrison Wells is indeed Reverse Flash, aka The Man In Yellow. With this new development the episode pushed itself further and pulled forth much in the way of drama and revelations.
Lets begin with the Time Vault which confirmed (and hinted at) many events from the comics and our own heroes future. With Gideon's loyalty to Barry, I have to wonder if we'll be seeing much more of this A.I. in the future. At the very least, the banter between them all was loads of fun.

I have to applaud the writers for their use of the time travel mechanic. Originally it seemed like episode 15 had been written out through time travel as I touched on in my review previously. However they've instead mined that reality and turned them into Cisco's dreams. In my opinion it was a really great way to bring that episode back into focus rather then making it seem as useless as once thought.

Just as he did back in episode 15, Carlos once again nailed his performance during his dream/memory sequence. At times I worried that Cisco may really be killed however I'm glad to see he's still around. He works so much better when he's subtle rather then always playing the comedic role. Did the Dream Glasses remind anyone else of Vibe's goggles from the comics too? Perhaps this wasn't the last we've seen of them.

But just as we saw elements from the near-past and hints of the future, we also got to witness the impact that our cast had on Barry during his coma. Jesse L. Martin once again nailed his fatherly role as he grieved for the comatose Barry. I also liked what we saw of Iris both during the flashbacks and in present day. Reporter Iris is on the case!

Joe refusing to give Eddie his blessing was a bit of a surprise, but I loved his reasoning. He really does know his daughter. In fact, can we nominate Joe for father of the year? Who cares that he's a TV show character, give him all the awards!

Much of the remainder of the episode focused on the trap from whence the episode got it's name. Early on it seemed slightly slow, however by the end I was on the edge of my seat. Once the trap was sprung and Harrison exposed himself I have to say I was over the moon. Their was no telling what could happen next. Not to mention we also got to see Barry using his Vortex hands. Helicopter hands next season perhaps?

Capping off such an episode, we had the revelation that Harrison was watching all. He was the Big Brother of Central City, monitoring and controlling everything. This lead to Harrison capturing Eddie, with the revelation of his true identity. Iris also appears to have learnt the secret of The Flash's identity. Will she tell Barry? Or will she now dig deeper for hard evidence?

Finally I would be remiss if I didn't touch on my favorite scene of the episode which took place during the previously mentioned flashbacks. As Harrison/Eobard spoke to the comatose Barry, we got to see a side to this man that we haven't before.

Overall Thoughts:
We had twists.
We had revelations.
We had heartbreak.
Everything I know that I wanted and more. Harrison capped off a really great episode as we near the end of this season.

Special Thanks:
I want to give a special thanks to Gavin Hetherington for taking over the reviews after my computer decided not to work anymore. He really stepped up and has my thanks!

  1. I am a new viewer of the show. Started to watch last week and I am caught up as of today. I have the Flash fans on Spoilertv to thank for this. Their enthusiastic comments coupled with some major and awesome developments( ex: time travel in E15) convinced me to give it a go. And what an entertaining and enjoyable ride it has been.

The flashback with Harrison and comatose Barry was my favorite scene too. Tom Cavanagh has really made me like Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash. His facial tics, his smiles, his ruthlessness, the contemptuous way in which he says 'Flash' and all his other characteristics are simply awesome. In this flashback scene just see his facial expression when he talks about 'fate'. Great bit of acting there.

  3. Great to have U back Chris! I enjoyed discussing with Gavin but honestly it's always refreshing when U switch it up a bit and we see some different povs.
It was a strong episode even though I still feel like they withold themselves and could've give us a just bit more, I know it probably sounds gready but just a notch up would be perfect.
The male part of the cast majorly pulled the weight last night, they did a great job but those voices in my head want to see Caitlin and Iris get more to do. Even though Iris finally realizing the truth was nicely done and if U want to see her next move I would suggest for U to go to next weeks promo article, one promo shows Iris heavily of.
I enjoy Joe so much, he is strong, confident but still so insightful. The casting for the role couldn't be better.
Those next 3 weeks will be a hell of a ride.

  4. Did anyone catch that OTHER easter egg on the newspaper? It said Joe West was the new police chief.
