  1. I have seen my fair share of brutal television throughout the years but NOTHING compared to what I just witnessed during this finale. Jesus christ that was hard to watch. After the last episode, I didn't think it would get much worse from here on out. Boy was I wrong...

I'm usually not so squeamish easily but all those scenes of Jamie looking helplessly as Black Jack Randall was raping him, giving up himself to the sadist definitely made me so. I literally had to pause a couple of times to collect myself in order to continue watching because it was that disturbing. And the aftermath of seeing him hallucinate Black Jack Randall instead of seeing Claire just made the pain even more insufferable. This sadistic man broke Jamie right down to the core in so many horrific ways. I have never hated a fictional character more than I do right now towards Black Jack, and he totally deserved that door crushing him when the cows came into the prison. Good riddance.

And oh god Claire. Poor Claire. She was such a hero and so damn fearless and my love for her continued to grow throughout the finale. She was not going to give up on Jamie whatsoever and was going to do everything in her power to heal her husband. "Randall had your body but I'll be damned if he has your soul as well. You're mine. And we are meant to be together. I'll have you anyway I can. Always" HELL YEAH. And I knew all that puking and fainting would foreshadow into the reveal that she's pregnant!! Awww. I can't wait to see Claire and Jamie's little English/Scottish babies roaming around.

Now off to France!! Though I will miss Scotland and the MacKenzie clan very much but I hope we will see them very soon. Can't wait to see more of the Frasers! Overall, this was definitely one of the most daring episodes I have ever seen but it was all very fascinating to watch. Also give all the awards to Sam, Caitriona, and Tobias!! Such sublime performances tonight. Now begins the Droughtlander :(

  2. It was horrible and I am DONE. No show in the history of TV has portrayed the graphic rape and assault of a woman the way Outlander handled Jamie's. 80% of the visuals of this story were disgustingly used for shock value. It did absolutely nothing for the story save ripping avfans soul from their body.
When you have seen the after effects of rape in real life, you DO NOT want to see it in all of its depravity on your TV show. I am done.

  3. I have to say that I'm sorry but this kind of OVER THE TOP melodrama doesn't suit for me.It never will.

I read fanfictions (but I HATE when they use rape as a plot device: REALLY HATE), I watch violent stuff (and I also play violent videogames). So I'm not anyone to judge the work of this crew and this cast (which is unbelievably good, by the way). I'm not even angry or disappointed (I've read those pages and they are worse than the show itself). I just believe that me and Gabaldon have lot of different opinions of the same subject.

There a lot of ways to learn that real love has it cost and there are a lot of ways to talk about this particular, heavy subject. Mad Men, The Americans, The Sopranos, Sons Of Anarchy and Oz (never heard about Vern Schillinger?) know how to use this kind of violence (even if it was treated seriously here).

I accept everyone's points of view, by the way. It won't change at all mine but I'm open to discussion.

p.s.: there's a small part of me that would love a sit-com with both Menzies and Heughan. They were extraordinary: seriously, I'm SORRY that they have to go down like this because they have an unbelievable chemistry (seriously, what a... shame) :-D

  4. Heartbreaking no doubt and exquisitely executed too, we need a couple of Emmys here, I'm sorry to read that some of you people, found this over the top, but well that's how the book says, and this a starz production, so it was expected, at least for me, I'm not a sadist so I don't really find a sexual pleasure watching someone suffering, but hell I can really enjoy good performances as the ones we had here, I don't know if I'd watch this episode again, but I recognize the good work they made, si i'm more than looking forward for season 2 especially knowing that they would fight to change the future, yeah, it might sound dumb, but it's worth the try, I'd start trying to change Jack Randall's date of death, if you know what I mean...

  5. Tobias Menzies deserves an Emmy nomination. That is not to say that other performances in this series have not been Emmy worthy but Tobias Menzies has had a way of forcing me to keep my eyes glued to the screen. I'm not referring to just this episode either. Very few screen villains these days have me feeling as though I'm watching a character that is truly evil. Tobias Menzies has done nearly every time he has been onscreen as Black Jack Randall.

Because of the subject matter of the episode it feels really weird to say the episode was awesome. The only issue I had with the episode was that it seemed way too easy for Jamie decide to live. It felt rushed. The performances were fabulous across the board. Including Angus' good-bye kiss to Claire.

  7. I have degrees in English literature and comparative lit, so I've had to read a lot--and analyze "why" authors choose to create particular narratives, and if they are effective. With this as a background, I have to say that Outlander, in its last two episodes, has failed.

Making a point about violence, domination of one group of people by another group, and sadism CAN be done without turning off the audience. Outlander has turned me (and I'm a war veteran) off with these last two episodes, and that's a shame. The writers and directors simply made the WRONG creative choices. I've said many times that horror & violence can be "implied" and make the same point rather than graphically, lovingly, grotesquely showing it on screen. Alfred Hitchcock was the Master of visuals: in "Psycho" you never see the knife touch Janet Leigh. And though talented, the makers of Outlander could have learned from Hitch. My hope is that now that they have satisfied their "baser instincts" the series creators can move forward--to Paris, the City of Lights.

It will be interesting to see if the backlash from fans of the show, like me, have an effect on the writers & directors on how they choose to show the violence that was also present in France during the mid-1700s. Will we have to suffer through numerous public beheadings--that can only appeal to viewers with the appetite for violence of ISIS. I hope not.

Enough, already, Outlander: we love your show--just not the graphic brutality.

  8. I was brought through a rollercoaster of emotions. The book was a harrowing read. I didn't believe any actor or production could do justice to what Diana Gabaldon had created. I was entertained, tortured, entranced, and upset. Tobias and Sam brought the book to life in the best and worst way. I'm still learning the depth of the human experience and was schooled by their courage.
    I'm thankful.
I'm surprised at those viewers appalled at the inclusion of the dark cell scenes. There was ample warning of the content for those who had not read the book and those that had read the book knew where the episode would go. I did not see any gratuitous rape. It was the story as uncomfortable and frightening as could be.
I loved it and hated how I felt.
    And then I just accepted.

  9. How can you judge a narrative without seeing the whole of it? And I am not talking about knowing the whole show, but about the whole subplot. It is not there "to make a point", it plays an important long-term role in the narrative.
