UPDATE: TVLine Post Mortem Added.

TVLINE | Turning to the finale’s many deaths and possible deaths: Dominic?
PLAGEMAN | Yeah, he’s gone.
TVLINE | Elias, though, seemed to be hanging on by a thread….
PLAGEMAN | We can neither confirm nor deny.
TVLINE | Grice?
PLAGEMAN | Yeah, he is pretty dead. But his partner is still alive somewhere out there — presumably pissed off!
TVLINE | And Martine was obviously quite dead.
PLAGEMAN | Martine is sadly extra-dead. When Root kills someone, it’s not a sort of “Eh,” ambiguous situation. You’re just dead.

As for what is in store for the heroes in a potential fifth season, Nolan says that they'll be "on the run" when the story picks back up, with Finch forced to decide "how he's going to rehabilitate [the Machine] and what powers he wants it to have in its new incarnation."

"Their cover identities have not been blown, as far as we know; they're still very much hiding in plain sight from Samaritan," Nolan says. "But the world around them, it may look the same when we come back next season, but underneath the hood, something very drastic has changed."

Meanwhile, Plageman refers to the coming season as "a literally rebuilding [one] for our characters. They've been protected to this point by this all-seeing eye of the Machine, and they're now responsible for trying to rebuild that machine, so they're much more vulnerable than we've seen them before. It's going to be a harrowing season."

Elias and Dominic's fate seemed pretty clear, while Control's future seems to be in question. What can you say about those characters' futures on the show?

Nolan: Well, we always claim that unless you see the body, presume nothing. That said, a corollary to that would be when you produce as many bodies as we have over the course of the last two episodes, there literally isn't time to show all of those bodies. So, I would take it at face value. Samaritan is not known for its temperance with regards to taking of life, so I don't think things are looking very good for any of the people you just mentioned. But, hey, everybody comes back in flashback.

We got a peek at Shaw in the penultimate episode. Will she be back next season?

Nolan: Shaw's out there. What's happened to her remains a mystery that we're going to plunge into next season. We're very, very excited about picking up that story where we left off next season.

  1. I'm not going to believe Elias is dead yet- he can't have gone out without a great accompanying quote.

I don't know, I remember thinking the exact same thing last year then they (unfortunately) came back to status quo too quickly in the early episodes of Season 4.

  5. Ha! Maybe a more than that.

  6. That would be bad writing, if the maxhine was back up and running that quickly I think.

  7. They have a story line for Shaw all ready to go - * happy tears*

Looks like Elias is really gone (from the THR post mortem)- I am a bit sad but the stakes were so high that to lose such a character feels justified.

And the creators want to go beyond S5 and tell more stories - Oh God!! Please make this happen. Amen.

  8. Brilliantly crafted finale. Exciting, thrilling, and heartbreaking, especially during that final scene between Finch and The Machine. Also, if Elias is dead, then a huge round of applause to Enrico Colantoni for his work throughout the series. He was phenomenal.

  9. BS on the Elias thing. The dude's totally dead.

As much as I like the character, it's time for the mob stuff to end.

  10. Yes! And based on the fact they will not confirm he is dead , there is hope. He is a great character.

  11. Having watched the episode twice now and just sifting through some fb comments on a Person of Interest thread I finally realize what bothered me about the finale - I loved other episodes this season a lot more than it as amazing as it was plus the fact i was bummed it was hiatus time. I just thought to myself how I would rate the season finales the best episodes of my other old favorite shows like LOST and Fringe as well as Person of Interest except for maybe this season. If-Then-Else was hands down the best episode of the entire season because of the very risky nature/premise of the episode, and it was all real life events that made that episode occur when it did and go down like it did. The best episode of the season ended up splat in the middle of the season. Loved YHWH - it did leave me wondering whether it was Shaw that gave Schiffman the lethal dose during the correction considering we were not shown anything but that coat we've seen Shaw sporting...And as for Harold and crew walking into gunfire - Harold now carrying a machine that's been omnipresent yet unattainable the entire show when its now no longer able to guide/protect them...The future is quite uncertain - Pandora's box...The last thing left in the box is hope.
