Chicago Fire - We Called Her Jelly Bean - Review

2 May 2015

On the heels of Peter Mills’ departure (which I’m nowhere close to being over, more on that later), we jump right in to Firehouse 51’s introduction to the new PIC Jessica Chilton, aka Chili. The house’s reaction to her says it all – we miss Mills. It’s nothing personal against Chili, she seems very nice and could turn out to be a great addition to the house. But for now, the house (and myself) don’t care, we just want Mills back.

Papa Boden gives his “children” a stern talking-to after their less than warm reception of Chili. “You can’t expect us to just flip the switch and get over it,” says Otis. Well, that’s exactly what he expects. I’ll try, Boden, but it’s going to be difficult!

The only fire call of the episode saw the recovery of two victims. The man living downstairs, Billy Carson, makes it out with the help of Dawson and Otis. Though the woman does make it out, she’s badly burned and her survival seems unlikely.

Later, Antonio stops by to talk to Dawson. Finally! I’ve been missing seeing these two onscreen together. Antonio has questions about Billy Carson in relation to the fire. After being admitted to the hospital, it was discovered that the woman who was badly burned was raped just before the fire and now, Billy is the suspect.

Dawson enlists the help of Severide to go and further investigate the fire. Let me briefly say how much I love Dawson and Severide’s scenes together, I wish we had many more of them. While on scene, they discover the fire didn’t start in Billy’s apartment where they first suspected but rather in the upstairs apartment where the woman lived. Now, the team is looking at arson, rape, and attempted murder. So naturally, whose help do they enlist? Why the Chicago PD and SVU casts, of course!

Elsewhere…

During the call, Rice tells Severide he’s not getting air through his mask. So of course, Severide tells him to go outside. Otis and Cruz once again become very suspicious of Rice and I can’t say that I blame them. I want to like Rice, especially after learning more about his family. I can’t deny it, he seems a little shady. Severide, for the time being, shuts the Rice suspicion down. But don’t for one second think we’ve seen the last of this storyline!

Sylvie gives Chili the warmest reception, and I think these two have potential to work very well together. But at the same time, they seem to be very different and might not mesh as well as Sylvie did with Mills or Dawson. They both make a valiant effort which is why I see potential, so I’m hoping for the best. But, there’s definitely more to Chili than she’s letting on. She comes off as chill (pun intended), relaxed, and very easy going, but I have a feeling there’s something very serious bubbling just beneath the surface.

To start, Chili tells Sylvie that even though she’s the PIC, she’s very easy going. But, their solo call of the episode leads me to believe that these two will have some differences of opinion before too long. I don’t know who the PIC was between Sylvie and Mills, but they seemed to work as an equal duo; it was a true partnership. Chili says she’s easy going, but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing that “I’m the boss” card played before the season’s end.

He’s not entirely gone just yet! The house receives a large package of pies and of course, they’re from Mills. I understand the writers wanting to make room for new characters and fresh storylines and I am thankful that they have that mindset. However, I disagree wholeheartedly with Mills’ departure being the right move. You want to talk about exhausted storylines? How about Otis and Cruz? I understand Shay’s death being needed to change the tone of the show and give a certain meaning moving forward, but I don’t see the meaning with Peter leaving.

But there is an upside, or at least the glimmer of an upside, to Peter’s departure. The writers didn’t kill him, which means there is absolutely potential we will see him again. Heck, we still see Shay! I am convinced we will see Peter again not only because he’s alive (thank goodness) but also because of how he left things with Dawson (still not over that fantastic closing scene).

Before Dawson gets the chance to tell Billy his name has been cleared, she receives a message from him that leads her to believe he’s going to kill himself. Sure enough, they are able to track Billy to a bridge, where he stands on the ledge ready to jump. The poor man thinks he’s responsible for the fire and feels so guilty he wants to die. The talented duo Casey and Severide harness in and move to approach Billy from either side. Billy’s having none of it, so Dawson clips in and goes on the ledge herself.

The rope catches and Dawson is forced to unclip to reach Billy. He nearly goes over the edge, which also would have been the end of Dawson. Of course, they are both pulled back and make it out just fine. What did we learn from this scene? Not that Dawson is fearless, we already knew that. Casey is still crazy in love with Dawson. Oh, we knew that too? Well never mind then, nothing was learned from this scene.

When Casey asks for help with installation for the club, Otis and Cruz are not so quick to volunteer this time around. He wouldn’t have needed their help for much longer, as it becomes apparent that the club owner is all kinds of shady and Casey doesn’t except the expansion offer. Instead, he agrees to finish the current project and then call it done.

Surprisingly, it’s Dawson who volunteers, and the two share some flirty jokes. Don’t get me wrong, I love that these two are moving back towards their normal selves, but after last episode’s ending between Mills and Dawson, I might just be jumping ship (gasp!).

I’ve thought a lot about this since the previous episode – probably more than I should have. Here’s what I’ve realized: I’m not necessarily a Casey/Dawson shipper, I’m a Casey shipper. I think Casey deserves better than what Dawson has given him but because I know that she is who will make him the happiest, I root for the two of them. Mills and Dawson have always had an undeniable chemistry. Back when they were dating, Mills still had a lot of growing up to do. Now that he has, I really do feel that these two are better suited for each other. Think about it, Dawson treated Mills a whole lot better than she did Casey (yes, including their breakup).

What did you think of the episode? The more appropriate title of the episode would have been Truth Comes Out. While not many truths were spoken, many storylines with hidden truths were threatened. What is the truth about Chili? Who is she, really? It’s apparent that Casey still loves Dawson, but what does Dawson think after how things ended (or rather, didn’t end) with Mills? Will she tell Casey? Is Rice a good guy?

  1. What a load of crap! Casey threated Dawson like shit in the last few episodes of this season. Everytime she wanted to make things right, he gave her the cold shoulder. He didn't talk to her anymore at home. He made up a ridiculous story to excuse his behavior (sleeping in another's woman appartement and not knowing if he was the one that slept with her) about Dawson telling Mills that she didn't know if she wanted to be with Casey. That never came out of Dawson's mouth. If I was Dawson, I would have left sooner. Plus, even though she's the one that left, she stayed pretty much faithful to him. Can't say the same about mister Casey (Priden's wife, ring a bell?) He deserves better than what she can give him? LOOOOL What a joke!

  2. Really like Chilli. Already prefer her to Sylvie who I find flat and bland as a character. Otis and Cruz have turned into little gossipy bitches (because it's fiction it's fun to watch but I hate people like that in RL so I'm not loving those characters right now).

  3. What I don't get, we all know Chili from Chicago PD as a snitch who gave Antonio an important tip. At the end of that episode she got 20K from Antonio and Platt as a reward and she wanted to use that money to get to her sister in Atlantic city. And now she is a trained paramedic all of sudden, who smiling all the time? NBC must be running out of actresses.

  4. I agree.I love Casey but this blatant bias is ridiculous!

  5. The great thing is that we all are entitled to our own opinions. Sure, there's been fault throughout on both sides, not one single person is completely blameless. And don't mistake this for not liking Dawson either. While she hasn't been my favorite lately, she's still someone I absolutely root for.

I just think that when it boils down to it, Casey deserves better. But I also know plenty of people don't agree!

  6. I like Chili, but I think it will take some time to completely warm up to her. It's not her fault, I just really miss Peter!

  7. Or perhaps it's all connected...? Who knows! Maybe that's what she's hiding. She's definitely hiding something.

  8. Well to be fair, an opinion is a bias, so yes. I'm sure Dawson and Casey will end up together and I'll be happy when they do, I really will! I just love her chemistry with Mills, I always have, and I'd like to see it again. And with how Dawson went about this whole firefighter thing and basically choosing a job over Casey, I just think Casey deserves better.

  9. Dawson and Severide investigation Arson was one of the highlights of the episode. I looked around social media and it seems like viewers responded very well to this aspect of the show. Chicago Fire would be very smart to make these scenes a regular fixture. These two characters work well together and a full Arson case would be a very interesting component to the show.

  10. She is the twin sister of Jellybean. Olmstead had it on his articles on tvline. The actress did a good job in auditions that they loved her so much and thought she was perfect for the role of the new paramedic

  11. While I respect your opinion, I think it's futile and a waste of time to bring up mills and Dawson. He is gone from the show. All the articles have said that Dawson is not thinking about getting back with Mills, just being reminiscent . Also, I love Casey, but he is not perfect.

  12. Did she? Cause from what I've seen, he's the one that couldn't handle things when they got tough! I'm sorry but your arguments about Casey deserving better are completely unvalid.

    ReplyDelete
  13. But he doesn't. They both made mistakes but at the end of it...he's the one that screwed up the most. No, he doesn't deserve better.

  14. That's very insulting to a woman in general & i'm a guy.Why is it such a big deal if a woman chooses her career over a man?Men do this all the time,i don't see anybody having any problem with that.

  15. IKR? I loved it so much. Those two have a nice chemistry going on. It's sad that we didn't get more after Shay's death. You'd think it would have bring them closer. They need to start something, like their own investing firm or something lol

  16. What I don't understand is you fangirling over Casey while he's the one who shouldn't be your favorite person since his break-up with Dawson. Her? She has been nothing but awesome and badass lately. There is litterally nothing that you can reproach her in the last few episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Exactly.Dawson had no fault as far the failure of that relationship is concerned. She tried hard but everytime she tried to talk to him,he shut her down!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree. At first I used to feel a grudge between Severide and Dawson, but their arson scenes are amazing

  19. I don't have a problem with her choosing a career, and she's fantastic at what she does. My problem is that she says now that firefighting has been her dream forever when it hasn't...she loved being a paramedic, and then she wanted to be a doctor. It seems she gave up a guy she loved for a job she might not even be sure of. That's what bothers me.

  20. I agree that Dawson has been awesome the last few episodes! And she's always been fantastic at whatever she does. And I think she's grown a ton through this season too.

I'm not saying Casey is perfect, of course he isn't. Sure, they both could have handled things better. But I think (and hey, it's just my opinion) that Dawson was her best self when she was with Mills. I'm not saying she can't be her best self again with Casey, but what we saw of them together was not her best self.

  21. I agree! The investigation alone is very intriguing and Dawson and Severide have such great on screen chemistry. They both work so well together and I hope that we see much more of them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I was thinking that too! I really hoped that we would see more of them after Shay's death. But I'll take what we're getting, it's fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Completely agree! He's definitely not perfect. And I know he's gone, which is just so sad. I know Casey and Dawson will end up together and I do love that! I just would love to see Dawson and Mills together again. Oh well!

  24. This is where her character fault comes in-She can be a little too stubborn at times even though it might not be a right choice at the time. That being said,i didn't like Casey treated her during the rough patch of their relationship. He didn't even bother to communicate, that's very offensive according to me.Don't get me wrong,i love Casey very much but i just didn't like he shut her down every time she tried to talk to him-That's disrespectful.

  25. I think that's because Severide works so well with female-friend-characters. That's why his relationship with Shay was so great. There's no romantic tension between him and Dawson and that's what makes them so good on screen.
Also -- my personal opinon and off topic -- as long as he was reconnecting with a teenage friend April those two were great. The previous episode -- I just didn't feel that sexual tension between them, certainly not from his side. I love April, I want her to be a permanent fixture on ChiFire if that's at all possible (in a guest role?), but I'd rather they remained friends.

  26. I'm with you, Meghan! That letter from CFD was a complete surprise for Dawson. She didn't remember about her application and wasn't even sure if she should be excited about it or not. It was Shay who cheered her change of career. And then suddenly, it was her dream job! I could never buy it! She was a great PIC. She got used to taking her own decisions on 61 and when she became a candidate on Casey's truck it was obvious that she had problems following her Lt's orders no questions asked. Not only she questioned his calls (like in the case with Chaplain Orlowsky but she also blatantly disregarded his direct orders (in the eppy with the chemical spill).
Chief Tiberg witnessed this whole thing and it could cost him his career. Boden told Casey to talk some sense into his Candidate. It was a harsh talk, I admit. But she needed to learn her lesson. When they came home, she wanted to talk some more about it. Did she expect to hear anything different from what he had already said? Did she want him to soothe her and tell everything was okay?! He didn't want to bring their work issues home and I understand him.
Dawson always says that she needs no special treatment and then acts offended when he treats her like everybody else. Besides, when she packed her bags and left, she made the decision for both of them. She didn't ask and didn't want to discuss it....and it seems like she is always setting the rules for their relationship. Like recently after their hook-up, she told him it was a one night thing -accept it!
I agree that Casey needs a girl who wouldn't put her career ahead of him. He wants family and children. We know it from S1. Gabby has other priorities and that's fine. Let her persue her FF's dream work. Just leave Casey alone! If you ask me, it'd be great if Gabby went to NC with Peter Mills. Not gonna happen, I know but I liked them together. :)

I'm tossing my opinion in b/c its mine and i'm also entitiled to it (if you want to pick at it grow up.) :) Dawson is my least fave, but has been since day 1. I tolerated her with Shay mostly b/c I loved shay but no matter - to me it should have been Dawson to bite the dust. I agree 100% that Casey deserves better and Dawson (her know it all put me first attitude is insufferable) was the one that was always pushing for communication and then shut him down during their breakfup (ugh she bugs me lol). I also liked her better with Mills. I dont mind Chili but I think she's hiding something lol these writers like to toss in monkey wrenches. I am missing the lack of sevasey bromance and blame Dawey and Rice lol maybe the writers will smarten up for the last 2 eppies but I dont have much faith. and I will always prefer to see Severide working with Casey (again Dawson is *meh* lol) but I am biased toward them. :) love my boys!

  28. See I always looked at Mills as her placeholder which wasn't fair at all to him. They got together after Casey wasn't ready to start something with her and it always came back to Casey. Mills caught on and said they could start over if she could admit that she didn't have feelings for Casey and she flat out told him she couldn't admit that. I think her best self had nothing to do with either of them, it was when she was an awesome paramedic who took chances and saved lives. I like her with Casey, always have but like you said, that's the awesome part about opinions! Love your reviews by the way!

Hey everyone. Does anyone know which episode of SVU is the flashback that Olivia sees?
She says the case was "about 10 years ago" which should be around season 6 (but her hair is longer) and going by how short her hair was, it's closer to Season 4.
I would appreciate any help locating this episode. Ta.
