Bates Motel - Crazy - Review

5 May 2015

After a couple of thrilling and exciting episodes, Bates Motel offered us a rather slower episode this week with “Crazy”. It wasn’t the crazy episode I’ve expected, instead it was calmer especially for Norman up until the end of the episode.
It was rather calm for Dylan and Emma too, only as usual, Norma was dealing a lot, with the aftermath of James revelation to Bob and Romero’s betrayal. That scene with Vera Farmiga and Nestor Carbonell in Romero’s house was the highlight of the episode, probably one of the best scene of the season.

I really expected Norman to get really crazy in “Crazy” but he spent the major part of the episode with Bradley. Bradley’s return was quite surprising last week, I’ve never thought we would see her again after her fake suicide. And her return didn’t really pleased me. I’ve never been a big fan of her character. The last seasons basically destroyed her life, she has nothing and no one left.
She came back to her former life, trying to reconnect but everything from her past life was gone. Her parents moved on, they changed her room and she tried to rekindle her relationship with Norman but it didn’t work… As Norman was really going crazy. Finally !
Norman kept seeing “Mother” while kissing Bradley and ran away… only to continue his ominous discussion with Mother. I’m loving Vera Farmiga in that part, she really delivered that weird sexual vibe perfectly. Norman’s sickness is getting worse and worse, and like Caleb, I just hope Norma won’t be the next victim.
I must say I was quite terrified, as Norma when she told Norman to shut down his taxidermy art. Norman was really creepy in that basement with those knives. And he was so harsh and cold with Norma, accusing her to lie about his father’s death. And yet, he was so calm doing it and he finished it by a declaration of love. God, I can’t wait to see when he finally breaks down again.

Norma kept doing everything that she could to protect her son in “Crazy”. First, she came to Bob and tried to settle some kind of arrangement with him, so he’d keep quiet on Norman’s incidents. But Norma had nothing against him, no leverage anymore. She had to find the USB flash drive and give him back, hoping he’d just let the Bates family live their lives. It was a bit foolish to assume Bob would let her off the hook after what she pulled on him but it was her last hope.
So, Alex was Norma’s last hope. He had the flash drive, he was the only one who could help and save her. Unfortunately for her, since she kept lying to him, he wasn’t actually in the mood to help her. Their scene at the sheriff department was so good, so cold between them. But then, Norma decided to take matter into her own hands : she broke into Romero’s home to find the flash drive ! Oh my God, Norma, you're the best. She was actually pretty hilarious at first being so stressed and angry, between the “You won’t shoot me, that’ll be the day” and “I hate you too”, I just loved her. She was way over protective with her son, especially because he’s a psycho murderer, but she just didn’t want him to end up in jail.
Romero was having a hard time and he was done with Norma’s bullshit and lies. He gave up the USB drive to the DEA so Bob and his friends will be persecuted. He just wanted the truth from Norma, he knew the truth but he wanted her to tell him, he wanted her to trust him enough with it. But she just couldn’t say the words. That scene was so beautiful, so sad and heart breaking. Poor Norma. Her screams “I hate you” while hitting Alex gave me shivers. Romero calmed her and tried to kiss her but she just couldn’t bare being touched and left. I really wanted Norma and Alex to have a relationship but of course they couldn’t, Norma can’t be happy, she’s always miserable, because bad things keep happening to her.

When she came back to the motel, still angry at Alex for screwing with her and her son’s lives, Caleb showed up unannounced (once again). Norma was trying to fill back the huge hole in front of the motel (too bad there won’t be a pool, but I’m pretty sure someone will end up dead at the bottom of the pit by the end of the season.). Anyway, Caleb came to say goodbye to Norma and gave Dylan his guitar. I was really happy Caleb decided to go, he always got people down with him. Dylan almost died last week because of him (he was the first to be asked for the job and he told Dylan about the money). So, good riddance.
But at least, Caleb told Norma what happened last season and when Norman came to talk to him at his motel, thinking he was actually Norma. Once again, Norma didn’t want to believe it, she just couldn’t accept her son was that sick and had a real personnality disorder. As Caleb said, Norma just doesn’t like looking at the truth, she looks the other way. She only does it for Norman, to protect him but she’s acually making him worse. That’s just tragic.

After last week hot mess in Canada, Caleb went back to Chick to get his money anyway. The whole scene was actually very good, even if I’m not a big fan of them. I really thought one of them would really die, especially when Chick pulled off that gun. But Caleb beat the crap out of him and took the money.
So Dylan could bring the money to Emma’s father, for her transplant. So sweet, and Dylan wanted to sty an anonymous donor. Then, he came to talk to Emma about Caleb leaving and all. She told him she knew he was his father, it was very touching. They're both so touching, probably because they're the sanest characters on the show. Still, it was super weird, as I said, I’m not a big fan of Dylan and Emma’s relationship. I‘m glad he’s looking out for her, and I really hope she can live her happy life wherever. I wish Dylan would go with her, because they totally deserve a happy life but they can’t if they stay with Norma and Norman. They’re too dark for them.

So “Crazy” was the last episode before the season finale and honestly, I don’t know what to expect from the season finale. And it’s so good. I want to be surprised. I’m sure it’ll be an epic episode, with everything that has been set up since the start of the season. Who do you think Norman will kill ? He has to kill someone, right ? And what do you think will happen to Norma and Alex ? And Dylan ? Hit the comments !

  1. Agree. Best scene was between Norma and Romero

  2. The scene between Norma and Romero was beautiful. It probably wouldn't have been if this was any other show, but the writing and acting in Bates Motel is just suberb. I love that there's a special kind of relationship between the two of them. I think Romero's one of the few people that can handle Norma's level of crazy. But how can she possibly be with Romero and still protect Norman? It's bound to get interesting.

I've read online that a lot of people call this episode slower, but for me this was one of the more intense episodes. Throughout the whole episode I was anxiously awaiting disaster (even more than usual) :-) There were so many scenes where things could have gone seriously wrong.

I thin Norman is going to kill Bradley. There was a behind-the-scenes photo of him and Norma carrying a body that was said to be Bradley's.

  5. Yeah, she's the most likely to die...
I have my dark theory... I kinda wish Norman'd kill Emma :O It'd be so shocking, I'd love it but I don't Emma to die :/

  6. The big disaster is for next Monday I guess, Norma's part got me a little anxious but for Dylan and Norman, it was rather calm and slow in my opinion.

Oh, I would hate that. On the one hand, it would work as a shocking, tragic twist. But on the other hand, I like Emma and it raises the question of what is the purpose behind Bradley's return if not to kill her off for real.
