The Originals - Night Has a Thousand Eyes - Review

18 Apr 2015

This week’s episode was a good one. Dahlia arrived in New Orleans proving to everyone that she will not be easy to kill. Davina helped out Klaus and Mikael who, to everyone’s surprise, seemed to be teaming up. Jackson and Hayley tried to run away with Hope, but failed. Rebekah, Elijah and Freya tried to protect Klaus and Mikael. At the end of the episode, Klaus kills Mikael.

Worst plan: I think we can all agree when I say that Jackson’s plan was a horrible idea. May have actually been the worst plan anyone has ever had on this show (and The Vampire Diaries; that includes Matt drowning himself to talk to his dead sister). Dahlia is said to be one of the most powerful witches alive. So if 2 Original vampires, 3 witches, a hybrid and a super wolf army can’t protect Hope from Dahlia, how does Jackson think just him and Hayley will do? It would take Dahlia 2 seconds to locate them. I can’t believe Hayley went along with this.

Worst friend: I felt so bad for Aiden this week. Jackson put him in a horrible position. Asking him to choose between helping his friend, knowing Klaus will kill him for this, and not helping him, which will lead to the possible end of his friendship with Jackson. I’m not sure if Jackson just didn’t think about the consequences for Aiden or if he just didn’t care. Doesn’t really matter, anyway.
Cutest couple: Josh on the other hand was a fantastic boyfriend this week. He helped Aiden get out of his helping Jackson without Jackson realizing what was really going on. I swear, these two get cuter every week. I’m really worried one of them will bite the dust in the next few episodes. It’s always a bad sign when things go smoothly.

Most surprising turn of events: There was a moment, brief as it may have been, that I actually found myself rooting for Mikael. I love the relationship between him and Freya, and I wish we’d gotten more of them. When he defended Freya during the battle with Dahlia, I feel like we got a glimpse of the father Mikael could have been had he not lost Freya all those years ago. I’m sad we never got to see much of his relationship with Rebekah. Because she would’ve reminded him the most of Freya. All we got was a small glimpse on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ but at that point the relationship had already been severely damaged. I know he always disliked Klaus but he had to have had some love for his other children, and I would’ve liked to have seen more of his fatherly side.

Best villain: I had high hopes for Dahlia and I was not disappointed. I know they’ll beat her eventually, they always do, but this is not going to be easy. I liked the opening scene, it was almost like Dahlia was showing off just how powerful she is. I hope she sticks around until season 3. It wouldn’t seem right if they manage to get rid of her in just a few episodes. She deserves at least a half-season arc.

Most interesting death: You probably think I’m going to talk about Mikael here, well you’re wrong. I loved the way the writers handled Josephine’s death. She and Dahlia were on opposite sides but had a mutual respect for one another. Josephine knew she had nothing to give Dahlia that Dahlia hadn’t already figured out. She knew there was no way around her death. Dahlia didn’t want to kill Josephine but knew that killing her would send the loudest message. I love that she let her play the violin one last time, even going as far as restoring her hands. I’m surprised Josephine couldn’t do that spell herself, didn’t seem like that powerful magic, then again what do I know. Then when Dahlia went in for the kill, it’s like all the kindness vanished, like she shut off some part of herself. You’d have to I guess, to kill someone with a violin bow.
Most emotional moment: Now I’ll get to Mikael’s death. It was not only the most emotional moment of the episode but also my favorite. The conversation between Klaus and Mikael was a conversation they should have had centuries ago. Klaus has been wondering why Mikael always hated him for so long now. He had probably imagined a thousand different answers. And yet I don’t think he expected this one. Mikael simply doesn’t know why. I think Mikael probably always knew deep down, somehow. You can’t hate a child without a reason. It’s like hating a puppy. Usually this is the moment in a show when the character steps back and doesn’t kill the other person. But not on this show. My heart broke for Freya. Klaus could’ve at least waited until he’d gotten out his final words.

Favorite character: Which brings me to Freya. I will be so upset if she doesn’t make it to season 3. Freya has become one of my favorite characters on the show, slowly winning me over each week. And boy, did she have it rough this week. First her sister kicks her out. I get where Rebekah was coming from, they had to be sure Dahlia wasn’t using Freya to get to Hope without her knowledge. She was confronted with the person who’s been mentally abusing her for years, was threatened and attacked by her. And then Klaus kills her father, who she’d finally reconnected with. You know those characters you just want to throw a blanket around and keep them as far away from the writers as possible? Well that’s who Freya was to me this week.

Best quotes: Klaus: “What are you waiting for, you crone?”
Josh: “I mean, mainly because if Klaus hurts you I’m gonna have to seek vengeance, psycho ninja style. And I think we both know how that’s gonna go.”
Mikael: “Freya, I’m so sorry. I love you.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.

  3. I think, rest of the episodes... Marcel, Jackson and Davina will die... Davina, to bringing back Kol---> Nate (Kol's true body, come on)

  4. Good review. I liked when Elijah told Haley what she was going to do, like a married couple (not like that would happen. I am not a fan of Jackson and he made me more pissed off saying its not their fight you are married to Haley for now its your fight and Elijah and Klaus were not born yet when Dalia came into the picture. Elijah and Klaus and Becca are more of Hopes family that Jackson will ever be and his plan did not work. She has one father and that's Klaus. Jackson needs to go. And that stuff Fraya gave them the tea its not going to work. The mikel scene was so sad. I liked the Klaus and Davina talk for some reason they were cute together even though I am a Cami and Klaus fan. I am so scarred who is going to die I am praying its not Elijah he is the main actor that would be stupid and plus I am a Haley and Elijah fan so I am nervous. Fraya I don't trust Elijah wants to trust everyone. I read that they wrapped up season 2. Glad Cami is back next episode. No Gia in this episode. It seems to me that Haley does everything that Jackson says maybe it has something about that necklace he gave her. Looks like Jackson is sticking around for awhile. I say all of them to work together to take down Dahlia. I know its not possible but what if Elijah could be a hybrid???

  5. Jackson I can agree with you, the rest no. I have not read anything about Gia. I am so nervous about Elijah he is the main actor if he leaves I don't know if I could watch

  6. Why are people afraid Elijah is going to die? He quit his lead role in another TV show so he could be more in The Originals, of course he won't die

  7. I hope not. It would no sense that he would go, He is the lead and the ratings would suffer. I just get nervous on season finale. And I read nothing about it. If they get rid of Jackson that would be fine

  8. I love Freya, I don't want her to go, she's the best character right now. Too bad she'll probably bite the dust.
And then those scenes with Josh and Aiden made me so happy. Too bad Aiden will surely die since the actor was cast in a pilot. I'll just enjoy them to the bitter end.
Josephine's death was also great. I liked her, but this is how it goes in this show, everyone dies sooner rather than later lol.

  9. God I hope both Freya and Dahlia make it to season 3. Claudia Black killed it like I knew she would. And she used the Morrigan voice! And Freya definitely needs to spend time with witch-Kol. Given that the episode essentially set up the beginnings to bring Kol back, in his original body (Though I did love Sharman's version). The two witch-prodigies of the family need time to bond.

  10. not when one Witch Prodigy wants to tear the family apart and i'm guessing "Morrigan" if from her show Farscape or something?

  11. I am thinking Aiden is going and that is sad because I like Aiden and Josh. And Jackson maybe at the end I don't know.

  12. I like Freya but I don't trust her I don't know I have a feeling that she might be the new villain for season 3. For me they can get rid of Jackson.

  13. I am so nervous about who is going to die and Elijah

  14. Morrigan is a character she plays in the video game series "Dragon Age." She is by far one of the best written female characters in video games, which makes her kind of iconic in that role.

  15. I'm 100% certain that Kol is returning in the season finale. It is entitled "Ashes to Ashes" which is a play on both Kol and Mikael's ashes, as well as the previous episode "Fire with Fire"
