Site Menu Update *Updated with New Movie Menu"

14 Apr 2015

Update: 14th April We've another small update to the menu that we'd like to share with you.

We have added a link called "Movies" to the top menu that will display the 6 most recently "Movie Roundup Articles" that are on the site.

It provides you with quick access to these movie posts from wherever you are on the site.

For those who are wondering what "Movie Roundup Articles" are, these are basically single articles that we update whenever there is a new item of news relating to that movie. Rather than creating lots of separate articles for these items, we collate them for you in a single post. This helps keep the discussion from disjointing, as well allowing us to provide you with a single quick access link to them, as well as giving you the option to bookmark the page if you so wish.

We hope you find this new menu option useful, and if you have any questions/suggestions please don't hesitate in asking below.

Also: We have improved the position and the visibility of the "Full A-Z Show List" dropdown menu in the sidebar to provide you with quick access to any show.

Hey All,

We've just made a few changes to the site menu that hopefully will make it easy to find your shows and give it a general tidy.

The changes are summarized below.

- All Broadcast Networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX and NBC) have been merged into a single menu

- We've reduced the number of Cable menus from 3 to 2

- UK Shows and Misc Shows have been merged

- Search box size has been increased

- Start Menu now includes some helpful help info and links.

This also gives us the ability in future to add new extra menu items should we need them.

If you have any thoughts/comments/suggestions please let us know below in the comments.

  1. Nice update but it wasn't difficult to locate a show before.

  2. I like what you did there :)

  3. Thanks for the info but even though I rarely post here this site is very user friendly as well as very informative.

  4. Thanks @Karla1953 that's very kind of you to take the time to comment.

  5. Many non-usa people who are unfamilar with the networks some times found it tricky ;)

  6. Can you make searching easier. It's very hard to navigate the search results.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Could you use the feedback form for other suggestions etc

Please try to include as much info as possible about what you find hard, how to improve etc etc so that we can officially log the suggestion in our database. Thanks.

  8. Once more a solid update. I like the improvements.

  9. I love this. It organizes the menu bar in a way that makes my OCD happy! Very clean and neat look.

  10. By the way I liked your Arrow script :)

  11. Ohhh great! I'm glad U liked it. I think I did a solid job in layering it and introducing the stories I meant to. My English is even solid in the Arrow story.
I just don't have enough time to write "sequel" chapters, but have ideas for them. Hope to write a couple of them during summer. ^_^

  12. For a non-usa like me, the new format still could be tricky, with how crowded each menu has become. Actually I always wanted an alphabetical list, the first time I came here, I checked 'Start' and then 'Help' menu looking for this list.
I think such a large an all-around site like STV needs this list (the show and the name of its network) and preferably in 'Start' menu because it's the 1st place people check. Even now I still get lost sometimes, for example I saw an article about 'When calls the heart' here and I didn't know where I should look to find it. I googled it and in wikipedia found its network.
I think I should have said these things in Feedback :P

Anyway, it's a good change, simple and less crowded is more user friendly. Thank you for your hard work. :)

  13. Hey @maloose thanks for the feedback,

As for the A-Z list. That already exists :)

    See this screenshot

  14. I figured it must be there somewhere but I couldn't find it, and that's the problem. Now that you said where I should look I found it, it's kinda hidden among colorful ads and trending topics :P If you could put/duplicate it in header menu like in 'Start' (because that's the start point), it would be best.

Also there's still no network name, I really need this please :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Unfortunately that list is automatically generated by the the CMS software and we can't change the text etc. The show names are based on the labels that are applied to each article. Also it can only be positioned in the sidebar.

Out of interest, why would you need the Network if you now have an A to Z list?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I see. Maybe you could put a label with the network name on the top of the page of each show, actually it's better this way, more informative. Maybe with a small pop-up page presenting a brief synopsis of the show.

If I'm not mistaken usually each network has a specific filmography, that's why I want the network. Actually I want STV to be my ultimate encyclopedia of tv shows, better and more comprehensive than any site alike. :)

  17. I disagree. I am non-usa and I don't like the changes. It takes me much more time to find a show because first I have to close the other windows (GG, allplayer etc.). 'Broadcast' and 'cable' just take too much space on my screen. But i'm a weirdo so I'm probably the only one person who has that problem ;)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ok, we've made the Drop Down menu on the right more prominent and larger. Let us know what you think.

As for your other info. Have your tried STV+ ? It's our full episode and ratings database and is used as a dashboard to spoilertv.

    You can find it here

    http://www.stvplus.com

It sounds like the sort of thing you'd find useful

  19. Hi, I'm not sure I follow exactly.

Do you mean the menu does not fit your screen?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I told you I'm a weirdo. I'm good at multitasking. For example I watch the movie and visit your site at the same time (both on my laptop, movie covers 1/4 of my screen). Now to choose the show I have to stop the movie and minimize the player. It's hard to explain so next time I will just keep my mouth shut. Forget that I wrote that comment ;)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ha no, that's cool. It's always good to understand how users use and interact with the site. Helps us when it comes to making design changes.

All feedback is greatly welcomed. We can't promise we'll be able to make every change that people suggest but we do read and listen to all feedback :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's now more like an extension of the ads! I wouldn't even look at it! Maybe after 'Don't miss article' section is a better place, or at the end of sidebar, after comments. People 'read' those parts unlike ads.

STV+ is cool, just needs more getting used to :P
Can you add the synopsis too? Right now I'm relying on Dahne's weekly reviews to learn about the shows and you know finding her introduction review of each show among this huge archive is kinda impossible! If STV team could write these synopsis and add their own opinion, I think it would be best.

    Thank you :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. We tried it in those positions and we get a lot of complaints, most people prefer it near the top of the sidebar ;)

There should be a short synopsis in STV+ for each show.

    See screenshot.

Also is show has a 5 start rating that you can see how people have rated the show and you can vote yourself

    ReplyDelete
  24. You've done a lot, I'm visiting this site for about 2 years and there are still lots of corners I'm not even aware of. Either you should make these excellent features more visible or expect comments and questions like mine, because not everyone are that observant or persistent in searching ;P

Thanks again for the site and your patience :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. My pleasure.

Both STV+ and this site have a detailed help file from the Help Menu

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great job ! as a non-usa, except for my favorite shows, I don't always know witch broadcast air such or such show and now I'll know it imediately . Love the green bar for the A to Z list too . Thanks : )

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks @Cath, glad you like the update.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i like it! but it was fine the way it was before, it wasn't hard for me to find a show.
Though thanks to this site i learned The CW is not cable! I thought it was 'cause of the poor ratings it gets compared to the other broadcast networks

    ReplyDelete
  29. Not a bad update, even if it does make the "broadcast" tag a bit crowded.

Personally I was fine with the system before, but I get how it may not have been the easiest for people not aware of which show is on which network.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I can't see how other people have voted, only myself. There is no current rating for any show?

    ReplyDelete
  31. The new A-Z shows drop down list and this latest movies tab update makes me happy. Thanks guys. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for the movie section!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yep, it's always a balancing act :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. That looks much cleaner! And I like the new Movie Menu too!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Great idea about adding the major movie roundup section!

(I hope this doesn't mean the old simple movie tag will be eliminated though...)

    ReplyDelete
  36. No, not at all :)

This will be in addition to the Movies label. We're just going to do this for a handful of the big blockbuster style movies as these seem to generate the most interest and it seems sensible to make it easier for people to follow etc

We'll still be posting movie news for the "smaller" movies but they won't be collated.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Love the movies section. Are the movie roundup articles new? I noticed a lot popping up recently and hadn't seen them before, if so, I really love that idea too :)

Highlighting the A-Z list was nice as well, first thing I notice when the page first loads now.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yep, they new articles for the major. They are explained a little more in the article above.

Glad you like the A to Z :)

  39. All of these are action movies.
