NCIS: Los Angeles - Beacon - Review: "Long Pauses & Awkward Conversations"

23 Apr 2015

In “Beacon,” the NCIS team must investigate the apparent death of Callen’s Russian “friend” Arkady Kolcheck after a body turns up in a car explosion. But it turns out Arkady wasn’t the dead man – he killed a man who came after him. As the NCIS team looks into why someone wanted Arkady dead, they learn he had been brokering a shipping deal between the Russians and the Americans. When the American shippers tried to pull out, Arkady wouldn’t give them their ship back, so they sent a hit man after him. By the end of the episode, everyone is safe, but the ship still hasn’t turned up – and it has more than 100 million dollars in oil on board, enough to “finance a war,” as Hetty says.

I found the plot of this episode convoluted. But that wasn’t my main problem with “Beacon.” The tone and the pacing were off, making the episode feel slow and awkward. Long pauses in between important moments occurred all throughout the episode, lending to confusion. The slow-motion shooting at the end made me realize the whole episode had resembled that dawdling, stilted motion. It often felt like things weren’t going anywhere, and the episode lacked energy. Even the music score held back the action. As for the tone, the characters exhibited an unusual lack of emotion that left me detached. I didn’t know how to feel about many things because the characters weren’t reacting themselves. And many of the conversations felt strange and unnatural. I hate to say this was a weird episode for me – definitely not one of my favorites.

Callen and Sam

The first time we see Callen, he is dropping off Joelle at work. It was nice to see Joelle once again. I really like the two of them together and was eager to see where things would go in this scene. But unfortunately it left me baffled. This was one of those scenes that held many weird pauses, beginning with Joelle’s exaggerated hesitation after Callen asks if he’ll see her that night. She seems to still be dealing with what he does for a living and the fact that he’s in constant danger. But the strained flow of the dialogue made the scene feel awkward. Even after Joelle got out of the car, the way Callen stared after her made me wonder what he was thinking. I couldn’t read him.

The topic of their talk also felt unnatural. It felt like a conversation that should have happened months ago, not now. I understand she is still learning to trust him, but it felt like she hadn’t made much headway in that department. After all this time, it was surprising to hear her say she was still getting used to the real him. They haven’t seemed to progress much further than when we last saw them on camera. I was happy, though, to see Callen being more open with Joelle. He mentions being in prison (undercover, the case from last week), so it’s nice to know he’s sharing information about work with her. And I liked all the mentions of how Joelle is influencing Callen to eat healthy. It proves G likes her a lot if he’s eating tofu and vegetarian Chinese food.

Something else I found strange in this episode was Callen’s ambivalence to Arkady’s death. When G found out the news, he hardly reacted at all. I know he claims Arkady is not his friend, but he has always seemed to feel a connection to the Russian. Callen and Sam may constantly be frustrated with Arkady and the fact that he is never forthcoming with information, but they have also grown to value him and look out for him. Callen even mentioned that he had been to Arkady’s house numerous times, a fact that surprised Sam. Callen says it’s because Arkady has a nice pool, but if G is close enough with him to hang out at his house, why does he have no reaction to the man being dead? Especially when he knows Arkady could have information about his father. The only theory I could come up with is that Callen might be upset with Arkady for withholding information about his dad. That would explain G’s lack of emotions. But it was never alluded to in the episode.

On the positive side, I did like the interactions between Sam and Callen. First Sam keeps checking on his partner to see if he’s okay. Then he calls his partner “Super G,” which made me laugh. And the topper was the amusing scene of them arguing over who went to the biggest extremes. As Callen eats his tofu, Sam points out that soy converts to estrogen. Callen remarks that he can’t win with Sam, and Sam says it’s because G takes things to extremes. His example is the fact that Callen sleeps on a mattress on the floor. But Callen points out that Sam also goes to extremes in his training. However, Sam says it's all for work, while Callen's extremism is personal. Before they resolve the debate, Callen says the conversation is getting more personal than he’d prefer at a “work lunch.”

Finally we see them in the shooting scene at the pool. It was entertaining to watch Callen undercover as a waiter, dressed all in white. When he and Sam can’t hear the message from Kensi and Deeks about what is happening, they both become hyper-sensitive to what is going on around them. As usual, these are the guys you want watching out for you. They are on their toes observing everything. They notice the shooter as he pulls out a gun, and they move into action. Sam goes after the shooter while Callen saves Arkady – “just doing his job,” he claims. (Again, pretending he doesn’t care.)

Kensi and Deeks

Kensi and Deeks had a couple enjoyable scenes this week. The first was Deeks going into detective mode at Arkady’s house. After he points out why he knows the fingerprints on a photograph are the intruder’s, Deeks gives a rundown of his analysis. He was so proud at solving a mystery, it was hilarious to watch. And his reasonings impress Kensi. “I do love when you talk detective,” she tells him. So he continues breaking out the police jargon, mentioning search warrants, the chain of custody and forensic DNA evidence. All of this brings Kensi into his arms – until he mentions severed pinky fingers. I don’t know where in the world he came up with that – it was totally random and gross. Deeks is often random but that was so out there, it felt contrived. Regardless, their nice moment has passed and they return to work.

Their other interesting scene was the conversation about the LAPD internal investigation. But like the Callen and Joelle scene, this one also had some long pauses and awkward moments (mostly before they start talking). Kensi notices something is off with Deeks and asks if he is okay. After saying he’s fantastic, we then watch a long, overdrawn silence that made me wonder what was happening. Deeks doesn’t look at Kensi but stares off into space, acting strangely. He eventually tells Kensi he is thinking about stakeouts, and how they are not fun when the cat becomes the mouse. In this investigation, he has become the mouse. I was happy to hear Kensi ask the question that we all want to know: If the LAPD detective keeps digging, is she going to find anything? To that Deeks emphatically tells Kensi not to ask him that. When she questions why, he says, “Because I honestly don’t know how to answer.” He then looks directly in her eyes before turning away.

Does he not know how to answer because the answer is a bad one? Are the circumstances too complicated to detail? Does he know what they are after? This conversation left me eager to know more as the case moves forward. But I was happy they had the talk. It proved the story is still on the backburner. And I enjoyed seeing the couple address something a little uncomfortable. Kensi knew he doesn’t want to talk about it but still decided to ask. We see Deeks’ nervousness and Kensi’s concern for him. And it showed us that Kensi doesn’t know what’s going on. Though Deeks doesn’t give her any information, he still answered her honestly.

Eric and Nell

Like our other pairs, Eric and Nell have some fun moments and some awkward moments this week. It was amusing to see Eric making fun of Deeks, mimicking Deeks brushing his hair off his forehead. It seems he doesn’t think too highly of Deeks’ intelligence. He was also funny as he ran to tell Hetty that Arkady was still alive, with a dramatic flair that Granger notices.

But my favorite Neric moment was when Eric accidentally told Nell he loved her. After realizing what he just said, he tries to backtrack by adding extra words to his meaning: “And by you, I mean your mind – your beautiful, gorgeous mind.” But then things turned weird, which bummed me out because the moment started off so fun. The whole I-want-to-take-your-brain-home-like-a-lobotomy conversation was bizarre. And again, we saw another long, silent, awkward pause as Eric pictured her brain. What? Add Eric to the growing list of characters acting strangely in this episode.

Other Thoughts

- It seemed cruel to make Callen watch a video of Arkady dying instead of just telling him his friend may be dead.

- I enjoyed Granger and Hetty’s conversation about keeping Deeks and Kensi together in the field. Hetty’s response was hilarious: that their “extracurricular activities” hadn’t caused any problems yet. Nice to know what Hetty really thinks about them working together.

- Callen’s reference to Eric teaching him about comic books was amusing.

- The blonde girl on Arkady’s phone, Anna, must have had a purpose. I am sure she is going to come up in future episodes as this case continues. Could she somehow be related to Callen or know something about his family? Arkady said she had nothing to do with the boat. But her name and photo were dropped for a reason.

- Callen’s exchange with Arkady about the stopwatch was interesting at the end of the episode. As he repeated the Russian phrase on the watch (“loyalty to party, loyalty to motherland”), he points out that loyalty to family trumps them both. And Arkady agrees. This seemed to be a foreshadowing of Callen’s search for his father. Arkady likely knows more than he’s saying. If he doesn’t have information himself, he knows people who do. So Callen mentioning family to Arkady was almost reminding him that his family and his father are important to him, and he’s not going to drop the issue.

- Hetty had some funny lines in this episode. I had to laugh when Hetty refused to tell Arkady it was a pleasure to see him, saying her mother didn’t raise her to be a liar. I was especially amused when she sarcastically said her parents almost named her Pollyanna.

How did you like "Beacon?" Did you notice the tone or pacing problems? How much do you think Arkady knows about Callen's past? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

So glad it wasn't just me. I really noticed it this week. Yeah, the cast is wonderful but the production and direction has been off. I hope it changes in time for the finale! BTW, I'm curious about your name. Are you an Anne of Green Gables fan or is the Avonlea in reference to something else? (I'm a huge Anne devotee!)

  2. No, sorry, nothing to do with Anne of Green Gables. A medieval thing. Silly me. So sad about the actor who played Gilbert in the series last week, though. As for NCIS:LA, I find it odd that a series around this long would let its timing slip so noticeably now , seriously underserving its charismatic cast. Undercooked plots and sloppy direction.

  3. Not to be overly critical but I think this was the worst episode of the entire series. Even the "enjoyable" or "fun" moments between the two "couples" lost me because of the horribly awkward dialogue/direction that followed the cute.

My least favorite exchange was Callen and Joelle, it seemed like it was only included to pander to the fans since we hadn't seen her for a while and people were complaining. How in the world can she possibly spend so many nights with Callen that her kids have started calling her the bag lady, but she can't make a firm plan with him because she's still getting used to him...? Is she what the kids call a booty-call? Awful. For me the show just kept going downhill after that.

Thanks for your comments. Love hearing what you thought! I didn't want to be too critical in my review, either, but when it doesn't work, it doesn't work. So I know how you feel! I agree about the "enjoyable" moments even being lost because of the awkward dialogue/direction that followed. It was sad to see.

I also wonder how Joelle is still getting used to Callen? He's driving her to work in the morning so they are obviously hanging out a lot. (Like you point out.) It doesn't seem to be a booty call because he likes her so much, it isn't just sex. But that whole scene definitely set a weird tone for the rest of the show.

  5. This is your first review that I mostly disagree with. I actually enjoyed the story as it feels like the first part of a larger story. I think the Callen/Joelle scene was intentionally awkward to show the fans that their story is nearly over. its becoming pretty obvious that Callen is trying to be someone he's not in order to please Joelle and those kinds of relationships never last. I wouldn't be surprised if the woman on Arkady's phone doesn't become Callen's new love interest. The only scene I felt seemed really out of place was the scene with Eric and Nell and the whole love your brain bit. It felt like the writer wanted each of the show's pairs to have a clever scene and this one was just weird. While I don't think this episode was anywhere on track with last week, I didn't think it was convoluted at all. It feels like it was chapter 1 in a multiarc story.

  6. I also must disagree with it a bit. I feel that the Callen/Joelle scene was showing that she is not ready and accepting of who Callen is and their relationship and I feel that it will lead to them breaking up. One thing to mention is that Sam said he still sleeps onthe floor, not sure if Joelle wouldn't have made him get a bed before now or make him stay at hers instead of his!
As to Callen and his feelings about Arkady, I did not see him acting ambivalent. Callen hides his felings well and I felt that they showed how he was affected but did not want to let Sam know by little things like the watch and how he kept it in his pocket instead of leaving it with the police as a piece of evidence. He had no need to take it from the tech guy but he did. It was a momento of a friend.

  7. Cryptic is the one word that described this episode. there were underlying feelings and emotions in almost every scene. nothing was what it seemed and no one was forth coming. it really seemed like this was the setup for the season finale. the scene with Joelle didn't make any sense to me. what was the point. I know the writers have another love interest for callen so it would seem to be a fore shadowing of them breaking up. If that's the case, why bother with the scene at all and why have Callen eating tofu, which I thought was hilarious. Clearly Callen cares about Joelle at least enough to eat Tofu and enough to share some of his under cover work.

I thought it was strange too that Callen had no reaction to Arkady's death. I was stunned to learn he has spent alot of time at his house. Arkady seemed to be trying to protect Callen in some way
(Telling Callen he would tell him what he needed to know but he prays he never learns the rest ). Who was the girl on his phone? Arkady clearly didn't want to share her identity with Callen but I got the feeling that Callen suspected something. maybe a link to his past or Arkady's. with all the bread crumbs about his father I think we will meet him in the season 7 opener.

Deeks remarks about the IA investigation, again cryptic. Clearly there is something "a tight rope walk" in his past. depending on your view he either falls off or makes it across. speaking of Deeks, what was Eric's snotty remarks about? very out of character and the whole brain conversation with Nell was not only over the top but down right creepy even for Eric.

Chris O'Donnell is at his best when he's on the edge with his emotions. with two love interests, working a case, finding his father, I get the feeling we're heading towards something special.

  8. Your reviews are always well written and on point as you see the nuances and mis-managed gaps in sensibility. As for the recent odd pacing of the show- the only thing I can think of, and I doubt it is the underlying cause, is that Miquel Ferrer's contract probably went up substantially with his increased presence on the show and that may be causing cost cuts in the production budget - but as I said, not probably the case. About the car scene between Callen and Joelle - for half a split second I thought it was a flashback because it seemed out of sequence in their relationship. But I see someone has commented that maybe it was meant to set up a breakup, making some sense. I have never warmed to Joelle , as you say you have, because she almost isn't there , for me that is, in her scenes - unlike the characterization of Sam's wife which was dead on right away and really popped - you instantly believed in them as a couple. Another older pet peeve of mine - do you remember Claire Forlani as Hetty's temporary replacement and how they built up the story that she had a long and close relationship with Hetty and she seemed genuinely distressed that Callen in particular did not trust her ? I allowed myself the flight of fancy that she might be Callen's long thought dead sister that Hetty had hidden and protected but then that all went boom quickly when Christopher Lambert blew her up. Hopefully we get more than doggie kibble answers to Callen's mystery in the season finale because we have waited too many years for the truth already ( heck, you would think this is The Blacklist and its stingy doling out of the truth). It's time.

  9. Ann, I liked your take on the episode and your description of it as cryptic. It's normal for the writers to foreshadow things to come during sweeps months, but I felt like they didn't give us enough hints this time. They held too much back. I didn't know what to think about the Joelle-Callen scene. Thanks for your insight. It helped me think about it differently.

  10. Have some of the better writers left the show? If it's the same core group they are somehow not as fully invested. It's like a student going from an "A" grade average to an A-/B+. We may not panic yet, but we notice. I mostly agreed with your review. I thought the pacing was off and the slow motion gun fight just didn't work for me. But here's my insight, for what it's worth: I think the writers used that scene and others with Callen to make a statement about his emotional intelligence. I call it the "Callen's All In" episode. Remember at Christmas at the skating rink when Deeks and Kensi say they are all in? I think the way Callen acted with Joelle was him being all in. Joelle is the one who doesn't seem to be able to reciprocate, probably because she's afraid of being hurt. It could be a combination of a trust issue and fear he'll be killed. I agree with the people who think we are being set up for a break up. Callen has so many complicated mixed emotions about Arkady, we see his inner struggle when he thinks Arkady is dead at first. Then during the slo-mo gun fight, Callen goes all in literally by jumping in to tackle Arkady out of harm's way. That's just my take.

Speaking of Densi and all in, I'm glad that Kensi brought up the AI investigation, but it bothered me that Deeks told her not to ask about it. What happened to all in? The writers still aren't revealing exactly how serious the relationship is, but I suspect it's getting serious. If so, Deeks holding back should be a major red flag for Kensi and a stumbling block. The reveal later may be a big deal. But in a mature romantic relationship or even a mature friendship, the transgression in the past (few a few exceptions) isn't as big of a deal as the not being forthcoming and earnest about it.

I hope the pay off they are setting us up for on multiple fronts is worth it. This week I was more frustrated than entertained. Sorry for the long comment. Great job, as usual with your review.

  11. Jack, I agree with you about the Joelle-Callen scene. All signs point to a break up but its odd for this show to devote a whole scene to setting it up. it's just a 3 line conversation between sam and callen most times. There have been plenty of opportunities in the past several episodes to end their relationship. makes me think there is something more going on.

  12. Have to admit this is one of my favorite episode. I always seeing Arkady and was in perfect form. Charming, sneaky and while stonewalling connected with Callen.

I enjoyed the scene where Callen sees the video. To me I saw so much emotion in that one scene. When Callen comes into the OPS, he was startled by the hesitant reactions from everyone, when the video plays he let's his tension go. Seeing the bomb, his reaction long breath and pause. He tries to talk himself through those mixed emotions of seeing his friend, and possible last connection to his Father wiped away. Callen's eyes glistened with pain.

Callen further showed the effect of the lost by needing to go see the crime scene. He was looking for any reason for that not to be Arkady. Which he says after checking the body, Sam keys into that with his "interesting" comment.

I also thought that Densi moment felt real. Deeks lost, and his pensive look eemed as he was staring into his past. Going though each event in his life that has brought this IA investigation into his life and the one he is starting with Kensi.

Arkady with Hennerietta was cute. Arkady trying to soften her with, "I really like you" comment and smiling broadly. Ah, Arkady!

I believe the comment about family triumphing over everything was Callen telling Arkady I know why you are doing this deal – family. I believe Arkady is being blackmailed, and the Anna picture with the captions "What a pretty girl" was a threat.

Joelle, proved to me why again she is so wrong for Callen. Joelle is much more interested in saying she had a boyfriend than actually having to do what it takes to be in a relationship and especially with someone as complicated as Callen. I saw his long look after she left as him desperate to make this work because Callen doesn't want to abandoned again(which is the only reason he pursued their relationship).Same reason he is changing his eating habits to be the "perfect boyfriend" so she won't leave him. He hasn't been too open with her because Callen did not take her to his house proved by the mattress on the floor.

Hello! Thanks for your comments. You and others may be right that the Callen/Joelle scene was showing that she's not ready to accept who Callen really is, leading them to break up. Maybe the scene was intended to be awkward so it showed that they just weren't quite right together. But to me it felt awkward as a viewer watching it, as if the scene wasn't done well. Glad it didn't feel that way to you, though. I wondered about that bed comment, too, and how Joelle felt about that. :)
Also glad you didn't feel Callen acted ambivalent about Arkady. I love the little detail you point out that showed his attachment. :) Thanks!

Cryptic is a great word to describe the episode! Yes, there really were underlying feelings in the scenes - I just couldn't decipher them. Haha. Maybe that's what didn't work for me. I hated not being able to tell what Callen in particular was thinking. And he really did seem to have no reaction to Arkady's death, which was weird. (Glad you felt that, too.) But, like you say, nothing was what it seemed and no one was forthcoming. I agree - this felt like a setup for the season finale. I totally understand where you're coming from on the Joelle scene. I do think it probably foreshadowed them breaking up, but it was still a weird scene. On one hand they're showing us how much he cares about Joelle (with the tofu, etc). But on the other hand they're showing us that they still have issues and she hasn't accepted Callen for who he is yet. They could have dropped some bread crumbs along the way that they were having trouble. But instead they gave us this scene that threw me off.

Kind of crazy to learn Callen has been spending all this time at Arkady's house! But you're right - Arkady did seem to be trying to protect Callen. That's some great insight. That makes me eager to know what he was truly protecting him from. And he didn't want to share any info about the girl on his phone. I hope we do meet Callen's father soon! The season 7 opener would be great!! (Or season 6 finale even better!) I think we're in for something special with Chris O'Donnell's storylines coming up.

I love how you describe Deeks' investigation and how he feels about it as a "tight rope walk." I just love that! I hope he makes it across okay!! Yeah, I also thought Eric's remarks about Deeks were out of character. It was like they were trying to be funny but it was surprising. I thought the brain conversation was creepy, too! Thanks for all your thoughts, Ann!!

Jack, I really enjoyed your comments. I think they were very insightful and I appreciated that new perspective that made me think of things a little differently. Yes, the writing for me has gone downhill a bit. But I also agree there's no reason to panic yet. And btw, the slow motion gun fight didn't work for me, either. Your "Callen's All In" comments really hit home with me. Yes, Callen has shown he is "all in" with Joelle, and she just hasn't reciprocated. Great way to put it. (I do think it's a combination of trust issues & fear he'll be killed, like you say.) I also think we're probably being set up for a break-up. But it's interesting what you point out about Callen's transformation to go "all in" with Arkady by the time he tackles him and saves him. He goes from an inner struggle about Arkady to deciding he's worth saving. "All in." I just love it! Thanks for that. It makes sense to me.

I totally see your point about Deeks holding back this information from Kensi. That is a big deal, isn't it? I see it as him trying to protect her - though from what, we don't know. Is he trying to protect her from finding out something bad about him? Protect her from knowing the truth because it would lower her opinion of him? Protect her from harm? I don't know. But in a serious relationship, which this seems to be, you do need to be able to trust someone and have them be forthcoming. Like you say, transgressions in the past are usually not as big of a deal as withholding them and not being forthcoming about them. Great point. Kensi seems to be understanding at this point, but I hope that's the case in the future!

I also hope the payoff they're setting us up for is worth it! Because I totally agree - this week I was more frustrated than entertained. Love your comments. Thank you!

Rebecca, love your comments, thank you! Fun hearing your thoughts. I really wish that I'd seen all of the same things you did in the episode because then it would have been an awesome episode for me. The way you describe everything makes me excited for the episode. :) Though I didn't see the same things in the writing and direction and performances, reading your thoughts made me think that that was probably how it was intended to be portrayed. So I'm glad you saw that and could share it with us. It gives me the insights of what it was supposed to be! Thank you.

Glad it was one of your favorite episodes, too! Arkady has always cracked me up. He was all the things you say. I love your take on Callen seeing the video. I'm going to let your wonderful description - with Callen's eyes glistening with pain - be the scene instead of how I saw it. I wish I had seen all that emotion you did. But I like how you point out he needed to go to the crime scene, to look for any reason it wasn't Arkady. That makes sense.

I thought the Densi moment felt real, too - just not the beginning of the scene. But I definitely saw a lost and fearful Deeks wondering how this was all going to turn out. I like how you say he was "staring into his past," going through the events that brought him to where he is now, both good and bad.

Arkady with Hetty was hilarious! They were funny together, with Arkady charming her and Hetty not responding at all. Haha. Arkady always does know more, doesn't he?

Mmmm, interesting thought about Arkady being blackmailed - and the picture of Anna is how they are blackmailing him. I like that! That would make sense for Callen's comment, too. Wouldn't that be interesting if she was Arkady's daughter? And then became Callen's love interest? Haha. I like that idea!

The way it stands, Joelle definitely is not ready for a relationship with Callen. The scene did seem to prove she was wrong for him. But I like your take on Callen's long look after she leaves. He wants to make things work and doesn't want to be abandoned again. Love that take! Thanks for all your comments. They added to my enjoyment of the episode!

Thanks, AvonleaMist, for your nice comments about my reviews. I appreciate it! I'm glad you also thought the Callen-Joelle scene seemed out of sequence for their relationship. After reading others' comments, I also agree it was probably a set-up for their breakup. That makes sense. But it was still a weird scene. Interesting about your Joelle feelings. I wonder if that's how the writers intended her to be - "not there," almost not present or in the moment for Callen, proving she is not right for him.

I do remember Claire Forlani. I also had thought she was going to be Callen's long-thought dead sister, and was disappointed when that "all went boom quickly," as you say. I also hope we "get more than doggie kibble answers to Callen's mystery".... hahah. Love that! This season finale better give us some answers! We have indeed waited a long time for the truth. (It's so true. It almost feels like The Blacklist and its "stingy doling out of the truth." You are on fire!) I hope we get the payoff!

  20. Heyyyo! First, the finger: There was a case where a victim's finger was missing, so technically it wasn't *completely* out of nowhere, although I'll grant you it was random. I have a feeling that won't be the last flirtatious interruptus we see with those too. I'm worried about them—especially after that screen shot I sent you. Yipes!

Unfortunately, I'll be unable to watch tomorrow's episode until Tuesday (or very late tomorrow night if I can't wait). I'm ready for some arcs to get in line so that SOMEthing can be resolved by the end of the season. We don't have time for more random things!

For a minute I thought "first, the finger" meant you were giving me the finger! Hahaha. Ahhh, an old finger case. Okay, it wasn't *completely* out of nowhere. Lol. No more "flirtatious interruptus" for our Densi! (Love that!) I am so curious to see where this investigation goes. But you're getting me a little nervous. No, no, no. I don't believe they'll screw over Deeks. No. (I will keep repeating no to myself now.)

I'm also ready for something to get resolved by the end of the season. Something better be resolved. I'm getting impatient! Definitely no more time for random things. I predict you're watching late tomorrow night. :)
