Grimm - Hibernaculum - Review

12 Apr 2015

Nick and Hank are called to investigate a rare Wesen that leaves its victims frozen solid. Meanwhile, Juliette starts to feel that she is losing her humanity as she seeks to get revenge on Adalind. Elsewhere, Captain Renard continues to suffer from mysterious bleeding and visions while Monroe works toward coming to grips with the Wesenrein incident.

Everyone has their own demons, someone let them outside, someone else keeps them inside. For Juliette, it's easy to see: she's consumed by anger and revenge and wants to kill Adalind for what she's done to her life - but friendly reminder, Juliette decided to help Nick in the first place. Truth is no one knows the side effects about the spell to give Nick his powers back, so at least Juliette can blame her friends for a while.
When Adalind is sent to town to buy new clothes, since her belly's starting to grow and she can't fit in them anymore, Juliette spots her and attempts to kill her, but she's kinda frightened by herself and what she's become. She needs help. Sooner. Her bad luck takes her to Rosalee's shop where she finds Nick, Monroe and Hank too. As soon as she realizes Hank knows, Juliette woges. Rosalee's reaction is priceless, "She's a freaking Hexenbeist!" Adalind then freaks out with Pince Kenneth, ordering to kill Juliette before she kills her - I'm not so sure but the Royals may be interesting in Juliette's powers?

Meanwhile, Monroe is haunted by visions from the Wesenrein's tribunal and can't concentrate on his work. He lies to Rosalee, telling everything's fine - which is not at all. I like the fact the authors are serializing his storyline, it'd be interesting to see what's going to happen and if the tribunal will appear again.

The Wesen of the week involves the murder of a woman, being attacked by a man who broke into her house asking for help. Nick, Hank and Wu investigate and find the killer in the woods, thanks to Nick's super powers (perhaps something coming from his zombie period?). Too bad, the guy dies from freezing as soon as they bring them in prison. This is not the first or the last frozen victim; dead frozen bodies intensify in Portland, which the gang find out it's a Varme By behind those. Anyway, with Monroe's help, their investigation takes them in a hibernaculum, an insane place where a lot of bodies lay down in a deep sleep.

Sean Renard keeps bleeding from his chest and it hurts. I'm afraid he will be the one dying in the season finale. And then there's Nick. A flashback from the pilot shows aunt Marie warning him about his future with Juliette. If he's a Grimm, he can't have a normal life with Juliette. (Like Buffy, she was a slayer, she couldn't have a normal life with a normal guy). During those four seasons, the two have passed through a lot of obstacles: Juliette lost her memory, then she had it back, she found out Nick's a Grimm and discovered the Wesens world, and now she's one of those monsters. That's too much. I wonder if the writers really want to break them up because the promo for next episode shows a Dark Juliette (= Dark Willow from Buffy?).

What are your expectations for the season finale?

  1. Nice recap Diana, did you like the episode? I don't know if it was just me, but this episode was extra corny wih the 1970s horror film type of hand graphic reaching out to Renard, and Rosalee's "she's a hexenbiest!" was so unnaturally awkward.
I'm not feeling too invested in the Nick/Juliette breakup, such as when Nick put the photo face down, I didn't feel sorry for him, it was just like...okay.
I miss Wesley, you don't really care too much for the antagonists because they appear and then written off haphazardly - no room for growth, but this new dude seems deadly, I guess.
My expectations for the finale? Someone is going to die as the showrunner said. I hope it is Juliet; there was some possible foreshadowing with one of Monalee dying, I hope that is not the case.

  2. Totally agree about the hand. I was like 'Wtf? Is that the same network which creates extremely beautiful ugliness for Hannibal?
'My expectations for the finale? I hope it is Juliet who bites the dust.' Same here.
As for Sean, I would prefer Renard to be killed off rather than paired with Juliette.

  3. didn't Juliet have sex with him... I was really hoping that would help him heal... in some weird way.. as if things aren't weird enough on that show.... lol
and what the crap was that with Hank in that preview of the next weeks ep

Juliet is still annoying as hell... but I like her as she is now...and I'm biting my nails to the bone wondering and worrying who they're going to kill off.... lol

  6. It did seem a bit far-fetched to me that they were able to carry all those wessen back to the barn without any of them biting the dust. Then again, from the poInt where they entered the house everything seemed a bit silly. As for finale speculation I doubt they'd kill Monroe or Rosalee at this point. Both of them are far too valuable to the show to be killed off now. Plus there's the whole tribunal plot, so it's a safe bet that neither of them would be killed off. At any rate Hank, Adalind, Wu or even Renard are more likely to be killed. Juliet appears to be safe according to the EPs, so she definitely won't be the one dying.

  7. I like the show. I'm tired of everyone blame nick. End of season one nick did tell j and she didn't believe him, he did want to tell her and he did example he didn't know how and the same episode we find out they both own the house together. J can walk a way at any time but she didn't. She can chose to throw away her relationship. Nick give up when she laughed in his face.

  10. she is pissed. it is very different you become a Grimm or even a Fuchsbau or what soever than become a hexenbiest. hexenbiest woge is terrible. in some way she thinks that nick will leave her one day. and how many times he say "i love you" at the end of line he never stay. because she is ugly and a hexenbiest which Grimms hate them. remember she told nick:"you even cant look at me, this is what is forever" it is painful for her too, she thinks she lost her love. when she said: i want my life back, it means she want to back home but she cant. and novone can accept her. it is what she thinks and i am not going to say she is right. her acts is more like people who don't know what should to do and don't see any way for rescue.
