Grey's Anatomy - Episode 11.21 - How to Save a Life - Read Shonda Rhimes and ABC's Statement about [Spoiler]

Shonda Rhimes: Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character — for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy.’ Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example — happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true — of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.

ABC: After 11 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we’ve been proud to be the home of ‘McDreamy’ and the ‘Mer/Der’ love story. The devotion of Grey’s fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey’s talent. ‘McDreamy’ will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.

  3. This is Niva's exit all over again. Tho Patrick's character wasnt doing much this season, he was part of the main core of the series. Why couldnt they just get a deal and do tehs eries one more season and give Meredith the happy ending she deserves.
    She is #BadLuckMeredith

  4. There goes 90% of the show's loyal fans.

  5. If Meredith really leaves next episode (as implied in the promo), killing him off was absolutely pointless. They could have left together HAPPY. After over a decade of emotional investment in the couple, the fans deserve a satisfying payoff. Not to be given the happy ending only to have it snatched away.

  6. So they brought him back to kill him! Couldn't leave him in DC for the rest of the series and bring him back for the finale?

  7. I think she's just moving out of the house because it's too painful.

  8. I think she just tossed a coin last year to deal with Patrick and Sandra's leaving. Whoever got head lived.

  9. Shonda rhymes: try to leave my show before I say you are ready ahahah I don't think so. You get the worst lamest cruel death I can think of. Shonda you are the soprano crime boss of tv show creators. Mess with the boss get the worst ending.

  10. The sad part is that it actually makes more sense than what's happening on the show right now.

  11. Here's hoping at least a few of the viewers swearing off the show tonight are Nielsen viewers!

  12. What's wrong with giving fans a happy ending?

  13. I'm still so shocked. I don't know why haha, I should've seen this coming from Shonda.

  14. She just decided to killl him, after all those years, they were the main core of the show and now he is gone after all the shit they have been through, they stilll dont get their happy endings.

  15. The series finale should reveal that Seattle Grace is cursed, and everyone who works there is doomed to die a tragic death.

It's the only way to make sense of the frankly hilarious number of brutal "tragedies" that have happened on this dumb ass show.

  16. Te fb video is heartbreaking and the comments are epic lol https://www.facebook.com/GreysAnatomy/videos/vb.68471055646/10155618118525647

  17. Meredith lost her best friend and her husband the same year. And Grey's lost two of its three main characters. It's time to end the show !

  18. If it was so important for her to kill someone she could kill owen. I mean i dont hate him but there is nothing much in his life now only that amelia disaster but i dont really ship them. But derek?!?! Really?!?! I think that we should take shondas rights to write episodes. In the last episode thatbshe wrote mark and lexie died. But i really do think that killing of mcdreamy was a bad move and it will cost them. Rip derek

  19. And not long ago she lost her sister. It's enough.

  20. I don't think this should have been done. The ratings are probably spiking for the rest of the season but I think next year this will cost them. It's not that I ever watched the show for them or anything but every show needs a feeling of walking towards a finale or something of the kind and I just fail to see any meaningful purpose now. What can we sincerely hope for in a series finale when she keeps refusing that characters get there alive? There is also something to be said about the idea that someone who survives a freaking shooting and a plane crash then goes to die in yet another accident. It gives a horrible message. I will obviously keep on watching because there is still much for me to love about the show but I really wish they hadn't done this. It is just wrong.

  21. This just reads: "we r tired of him pursuing other interests and missing a lot this season that we decided to fire him by killing him off in a disrespectful way.

  22. Even though I am not at all interested in Dempsey's character, I still can't believe they actually killed him off. 11 years of struggling and this is where the journey ended? I know there wasn't really any other way (sending him away to DC would have been even worse) but I still feel robbed and I can't even imagine how MerDer fans feel right now, they deserve better. I will still stick around as long as Ellen Pompeo is on the show but I think it's time to finally end it with season 12.

  23. I never thought i would say this , but THIS time , i know that the show won't survive this death.
Merder is THE couple of the show , without one of them , what is the point ?!! It really suck !!!

  24. And what the point of this ridiculous cheating sl??

  25. I was not a Derek Shepherd fan ever. But this seems so unnecessary. Lets see what happens next.

  26. Still makes no sense with one full season left on his contract. Why would they let him go when they tried so hard to get him to sign two-year deal. There's more behind scenes stuff going on here because it seems like a bad business move. Yeah, they'll get major ratings for four remaining hours, but they may have sacrificed the longevity of series. ABC a finally fixed Thursday 8 pm slot....

  27. It wouldn't make any sense to leave him in DC. He has two infant children and a wife. I'm still surprised they killed him, but it makes more sense than having him off-screen while Meredith is still a main character.

  28. In typical Shonda fashion... *shrugs*
Whatever.... ABC should have canceled the show years ago...

  29. I didn't cry during the episode. But this made me cry. What a dick move it was, I don't even have the words for it. why couldn't they have him move away; even forever? Hell, even his almost-mistress going all Fatal Attraction on him would be more realistic. It'd make more sense instead of an unrealistic way of taking him out by having a truck come out all of a sudden (when there were no cars when he rescued the people from the accident) and would be at least respectful of those 11 years of history. I know accidents happen, but there were so many things wrong with the way this exit was executed, silly little episode. That's probably why I couldn't tear up one bit during the hour. SMMFH. And note this - I never was a big fan of Derek and MerDer lost its fire a bit....but still - I care and am confused. I can't imagine what hardcore Derek or MerDer fans are feeling right now.

  30. THISSS. Owen is uselss at this point and with Cristina gone it'd make more sense and I bet not a lot of fans would be upset...But seriously? Ending the MerDer story like THAT? I am fine with ending it; breaking them up (hell, I was so fed up with him in the beginning of the season and was glad he went away) or whatever...but the execution of his death was just laughable. Guess that's what you get when you step on Shonda's toes.

  31. My thoughts exactly. As above.

    ReplyDelete
  32. "The possibilities for what may come are endless" Not really endless, the show has already been re-using storylines.

    ReplyDelete
  33. They should've just made this the last season. His death seems just so pointless after all those years of building up their love story. Just sad that it ended this way! Just wanted them to be happy till the very end..

  34. The show and the network shot itself in the ratings foot, cue sharks and play music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTkbscLSMSE

  35. I already know what GA's series will be like. There's a massive explosion in the hospital and everyone dies.

  36. I want to use two words, the first one starting with an f, the second word being "you". I started watching this show when I was only 20 years old, I'm now 32. Following this show from the Netherlands by downloading every new episode first thing in the morning after it being broadcasted in the USA, defending it when some episodes were called lame by many. And this is how it came to an end. Not watching anymore. I hate throwing words like "there is no respect for the fans if you kill off a character like this" around, because it's whiny, but there is no respect for the fans if you kill off a character like this.
