The Returned - Camille - Advance Preview

9 Mar 2015

The Returned premieres on March 9 at 10/9c on A&E and is adapted from the French series Les Revenants and was developed by Lost alum Carleton Cuse. Keith Gordon directed the first episode, “Camille,” with Cuse penning the teleplay. Raelle Tucker of True Blood and Supernatural co-executive produces with Cuse. The series features a well-known cast including Mark Pellegrino, Jeremy Sisto, Kevin Alejandro, Mat Vairo, India Ennenga, Sophie Lowe, Leah Gibson, Chelah Horsdal, and Sandrine Holt. And really, that’s just scratching the surface.

The series follows in the footsteps, not only of its French inspiration, but a spate of returned from the dead series like Resurrection and The 4400. And of course, you could also see them as following in the footsteps of all the other popular zombie series. There are 10 episodes ordered for this first season, and by the episode titles it would appear that each episode focuses on one person returned after some years from the dead.
The production values and performances are excellent, however, and the plot unfolds in a really interesting way. This episode focuses on Camille’s (India Ennenga) return, but we see several other returns as well. The episode begins four years ago with Camille’s apparent death. It then picks up four years later, and the episode follows the reaction of Camille’s family to her return. The episode then circles back to four years ago at the very end to fill in the details of what we saw in the first few minutes.
The present storyline picks up at a support group meeting for people who have suffered a loss. Peter Lattimore (Jeremy Sisto) is the psychologist leading the group. The group’s meeting is interspersed with Camille’s making her way home. For her, no time has passed, but life has definitely moved on for her family. Her father Jack (Mark Pellegrino) and mother Claire (Tandi Wright) have found different ways to cope with the loss of their daughter. Camille’s sister, Lena (Sophie Lowe), has also struggled to come to terms with both the loss of her sister and her own part in it.

Dr Julie Han (Sandrine Holt) is faced with the mysterious appearance of Victor (Dylan Kingwell). Simon (Mat Vairo) returns to Rowan (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). While Camille’s return is met with wonder and joy, not all the returns are. In fact, I found the reaction of Camille’s parents to be a bit odd and not entirely satisfactory. The first episode also contains two new deaths, so it will be interesting to see what happens to those people going forward.

The episode is well-plotted, asking some interesting questions that I’ll definitely be tuning in to see answered. I haven’t seen the French version, so I’ll be really interested in hearing from people who have as to whether this is similar. This first episode is definitely worth watching, particularly for the performances of Mark Pellegrino, India Ennenga, and Sophie Lowe. Don’t forget to tune in to catch the first episode on March 9 at 10/9c on A&E!

  2. Thanks for the great preview!
I haven't seen the original so was very keen to check this out, I'm glad I did. It was an interesting premiere episode that, like you, left me with a dozen questions.

Also, I agree about Mark, Sophie and India, they all had really strong performances, in particular Mark. It's always an added bonus when the cast perform well, it makes the episode all the more enjoyable.

  3. I love Les Revenants (now on Netflix!!) and will check out this remake because of the talent behind and in front of the camera, I've heard that by episode 6 this will divert from its french roots which I'm quite interested to see where they take us.

  4. My pleasure! I thought it was great - but I haven't watched the original - or any of the other back from the dead shows, so I'm really interested to see what others think. But great cast - and both exec producers are terrific too.

  5. Thanks! Great to have the perspective of someone who watched Resurrection! Honestly, I though Mark was way better in this than either The Tomorrow People or Supernatural.

  6. I'm counting on you to come back and tell us what you think in comparison!

  7. Just... loved it.
I mean I've seen Les Revenants and Resurrection but I'm still so captivated by this concept.

  8. Thanks Lisa! I haven't seen the French version either, so I too will be curious to how others tell us it varies and what Americana is placed within it. It seems atmospheric, something I thought the first season of Resurrection lacked which is is why I didn't watch the second season, -and of course I think it will be extra enjoyable being put back to back with Cuse's Bates Motel and with some familiar Bad Robot Alumni! I am also very happy for Mark Pellegrino too! He never gets series regular roles!

  11. I'm really excited about this show even though I only recently sat down and watched the whole season in one day last month.
I really want to know what they're going to do with Serge. I know they changed his name in the US adaptation and the guy playing him was in The 100.

  12. I don't watch Supernatural, but I did watch The Tomorrow People, and I agree with you. He was much better in this.

  13. He was a regular on The Tomorrow People. I'll be interested to hear what you think of the series! Definitely agree about the atmosphere!

  14. Hope that doesn't mean you didn't want to watch the rest! This kept me intrigued throughout.

  15. I'll be really interested to hear your thoughts!

  16. I'm really looking forward to hearing from those of you who saw the French version. I really hope they don't pull a Grace Point - that was awful! But I really enjoyed this episode....

  17. I didn't know that about the Tomorrow People! I would of checked it out! Looking forward to your thoughts too! :)

  18. I just didn't have time to watch the rest.

  19. I tried watching Les Revenants last year, but I couldn't get into to it. This might seem like an excuse, but I really don't like reading subtitles when I am watching TV since it takes away from what I am watching.
Watched The Returned (US) like a month ago, and quite liked it.

  20. I wouldn't put The Tomorrow People on your list of things to check out btw - lots of logic/plotting problems! But Pellegrino did some good work.

  21. I love the French original, and well I don't speak French so I have to rely on subtitles. Since Season 2 of Les Revenants only starts next year (and I have pretty much forgotten the details), I might as well try to watch this as a recap, and in a language I'm familiar with!
A side note to the author of this article, the engaging spirit of writers in general on SpoilerTV with regards to commentators, really attracted me to this site, and you are yet another example of that. It's great to see that there is still a fan site where we can all be respectful!

  22. Thanks so much! I hope you'll come back and share your thoughts on how the US version compares!

  23. Thanks @Jerry for that wonderful comment, it's very much appreciated. We try very hard to live by our motto "For the fans, by the fans". We hope we never get too big that we can't interact with the fans of the shows we ourselves love and cover.

  24. LOL! I wasn't planning on it, I just might have should of I known he was in it when it first aired. Maybe this will at least last a while :)

  25. The Returned has two big advantages over Gracepoint. 1) it is airing on cable 2) Gracepoint had to solve the murder at the end of the season, The Returned has no predetermined ending. Also Gracepoint made two big mistakes. 1) David Tenant is great in Broadchurch but should not have been in Gracepoint 2) the showrunner admitted it was a mistake to get the Broadchurch director to direct the first few episodes which were the same episodes he directed of Broadchurch.

  26. Yep sounds like the first episode is a carbon copy of the original, but I will still watch. Now that I think about it I still have two episodes of the original left to watch, lost cable during its run and then just haven't watched it on Netflix yet, should do that today. :)

I'll be a lot more interested in this in a few episodes once it starts heading in its own direction.

  27. Sorry to hear that you discovered Les Revenants with this version. Should switch to the original. This american version is just the same thing but with cheap acting and an american setting much less magic than the original alpine town.
