The Flash - Out Of Time - Review

Wow. Just...wow. Please tell me I wasn't the only one left breathless by this episode? There were so many moments that left me gobsmacked that this may have just become my favorite of The Flash thus far. How are the production team going to top this for the season final? We're in a wild ride with these last few episodes of the season!
Lets start with Mark Mardon, the Weather Wizard. I was excited when I first heard they were bringing the character in since his brother was severely underused (and killed off) in the pilot. We got a few cool scenes from him (along with some cool special effects) and the perfect foundation for a big story-line with his vendetta against Joe. However on my second viewing I realized just how underwhelming it ended up being. On the plus side, Joe got some nice moments that really worked in his element and it was tragic to hear what happened to Captain Singh.

In the end I expected more from the Weather Wizard. However that was all made up for with the amazing plot surrounding Harrison Wells.

Harrison was the real heart of the episode and now his mystery has really been brought forward. Various characters have begun to pick up on the fact that Harrison isn't all that he appears to be, in particular Cisco. They really played up that father/son dynamic the two have teased throughout the earlier episodes. I also have to applaud the production team for the scene involving Harrison and Cisco watching a classic movie. On my first viewing it just seemed like a filler scene, but on further viewings it really packs a punch just to see how close they are. Which of course paves the way to the heartbreaking moment when Cisco discovered the truth.

We had a series of revelations that I wasn't expecting at this point. As I saw someone mention in the comments, "Did they accidentally air the season final?". Despite that, I thought it worked well. The entire sequence of revelations took me completely by surprise and left me on the edge of my seat, which was furthered by what happened to poor Cisco.

Carlos Valdes performance this episode completely surprised me. Here's the guy that overacted at the start of the show and at times seemed annoying, digging deep into his emotions. While Tom Cavanagh performed exceptionally well, it was Carlos who really made the scene in my opinion. He made the scene purely powerful, emotional and raw. I've seen some mention in the comments that Cisco's tears weren't scripted, well congratulations to Carlos because he hit all the right emotional notes this week.

From all that though I was pretty mixed on the Linda/Barry/Iris/Eddie situation. Much of the scenes they all had I felt should have been taken out and that time devoted to Weather Wizard and Joe rather then adding in another plot to an already packed episode. Barry revealing himself to Iris along with the kiss was a really solid moment though. Iris was always going to find out eventually, but I liked how Barry just did it and moved on.
In the end, this episode had a strong payoff after many weeks of build up for Harrison. The ending also opens up many possibilities now that time travel has been formally introduced. Are we going to relive this episode and see events play out differently? Is Barry going to hide his secret from Iris again? I hope they don't completely undo everything, after dropping so many twists and bombshells I'd like for at least some to be retained.

Overall thoughts:
While the Weather Wizard ended up being a bit of a letdown the plot with Harrison and Cisco more then made up for it. Time travel was formally introduced and number twists and turns were introduced. I have to say that the latter half of this episode kept me on the edge of my seat and left me wanting more.

  1. Good review. I was so revved up after this episode I immediately rewatched it and kept aside my all other Tuesday shows because I couldn't think about anything else. It was a magnificent episode. Even with all the spoilers I know already I believed every scene that was shown. Carlos Valdes killed it in that scene. Tom Cavanah is awesome. I love The Flash.

Even though the quadrangle love story was difficult to swallow it was needed for Barry and Iris to reach the point where they were when Iris owned her feelings and Barry revealing himself to her. It had to be done.

I think almost everything that happened will be reset in next episode. Weather wizard will be caught before he kidnaps Joe, so Barry has no reasons to reveal his secret to Iris since no tsunami, Cisco won't die which means he won't do the diagnostics on that device, and Iris is still with Eddie in coming episodes. I guess some of the suspicion to Wells by Mason and Iris will stick. That's it.

  2. Nice review :) What a brilliant episode! No Wonder this episode has the overall rating of 9.9 out of 10 by almost 4500 people on IMDb :)

  3. Even though events will change so that Cicso won't run the diagnostics (and subsequently be killed by Wells), his suspicions will remain. Barry still will tell Cisco of Iris' suspicions (if Barry doesn't, Iris eventually will) and he still will ask Joe why he suspected Wells of Nora's murder. Both of those events (Briggs and Iris discussing Wells, Cisco talking to Joe) happened outside of Barry's actions. Given how quickly the series moves through plots, I suspect that Team Flash will discover That Wells is Reverse-Flash within the next couple of episodes. It's clear in some of the scenes in the PaleyFest Sizzle video that Barry is suspicious, and the video covered this episode and the following two or possibly three episodes. The team may not learn Wells is a descendent of Eddie's or his real name just yet, but they will discover he is the Man in Yellow.

Also keep in mind that Barry will remember everything that occurred in the original timeline. So, HE remains aware of Iris' suspicions (and of her true feelings for him). The fact that Caitlin didn't get to voice her Wells suspicions to Barry just delays the inevitable by an episode or two.

  4. Agreed. Iris and Mason's conversation will definitely happen. And Barry remembers Iris's suspicions. But will he say about this to new Cisco and Caitlin is what we need to see. If he does say then why wouldn't Cisco run the diagnostics in the new time line. My prediction is Barry will remember the suspicions and maybe new timeline Iris might discuss it with Barry but Barry won't share it with STAR lab people. We know till episode 18 Dr. Wells is with STAR lab crew as we see him there when Felicity and Palmer arrive. Grant Gustin in an interview said he becomes suspicious of Wells by something he says during a conversation in coming episodes. But he will act in front of Wells as if nothing is wrong. I am expecting everything to blow out in episode 19. I believe that is the episode when Captain Lance crosses over and they find that dead remains which believe to be of Simon Stagg's.

  5. Your logic is sound. I think at some point relatively soon (probably no later than ep 19), whether by running the diagnostics or not, Team Flash will discover Wells is Reverse-Flash.
