The 100 - Bodyguard of Lies - Review: "Love is... weakness?"

1 Mar 2015

The 100 aired its final episode before the two-part season finale on Wednesday, and once again it delivered an excellent episode. It also included a scene that is sure to go down as a unique moment in the history books of the CW. I am of course talking about the kiss between Clarke and Lexa, which has received some mixed reactions. Let's go right down to that moment.

The kiss happened while Lexa and Clarke were waiting for Bellamy to shut down the acid fog. Earlier, Lexa ordered a hit on Octavia because she knew Lexa and Clarke knew about the TonDC bombing. Clarke saved Octavia and went nuts on Lexa, after which Lexa tells Clarke she is too close to Octavia. Clarke subsequently calls Lexa a liar, because she is hiding her true feelings. Lexa tells her she didn't let everybody die at TonDC, she didn't let Clarke die. Clarke says Lexa should trust her and walks out on her. Later, Lexa tells Clarke she does trust her and Clarke thinks life should be about more than just surviving. She believes they deserve better than that, and Lexa agrees. She then kisses Clarke for about 15 seconds and proceeds to do so again. However, Clarke stops her and says she's not ready to be with anyone. Not yet.

I am going to take a somewhat neutral position in regards to the kiss. Once again, the writers delivered a pretty shocking moment. Since the kiss was spoiled over the weekend, most of the fans (including myself) were prepared for the moment, but nobody had an idea what context it would be in. In the weekend, I took a wait-and-see approach. After having seen the episode, I can say that I am fine with the kiss. I am in no way a shipper for anyone, but this does open up a whole lot of possibilities. There are now endless ships that could sail, from 'Ravarke' and 'Octarke' to 'Indrarke', all while Bellarke is still not out of the question. I applaud the writers for going there and giving the CW its very-first LGBT lead character. Yes, Clarke is bi-sexual but they are not labeling her like that.

There are understandably some complaints regarding the kiss. While I'm not trying to justify anything or convince everyone to accept the kiss, I will address some of the criticisms below.
1. There was no build-up to the kiss
Clarke and Lexa have been working together a lot since episode 9. Not only have they made an entire plan for war, they have also fought off a mutant gorilla and all that. I am not saying the kiss was bound to happen, but it made sense that it did.
2. It's too soon after Finn's death
Finn's death has been two weeks ago at most and now Clarke is with Lexa. Well, Clarke herself addressed that issue, telling Lexa it is too soon to be anyone yet. Yes, Clare is still grieving even though you don't see it.
3. It destroys Clarke's entire characterization
Lexa had Clarke kill her sometime lover Finn, forced Clarke to go darker than she ever was and manipulated her into allowing the TonDC bombing. Now the two of them are kissing!? In Lexa's defense, it was Clarke's choice to kill Finn. Yes, Clarke was left with no option but to kill him to spare the awful pain he would be in, but Lexa was also pressured to have Finn killed. If she would have shown mercy, their people would not be merciful to her. Had the Grounders killed her, there would be a new Commander and Finn would still be ordered to justice. Also, Clarke basically told Lexa she is done being dark before the kiss, essentially letting her guard down and showing her vulnerability.
4. Lexa is a hypocrite
Lexa has always said "Love is weakness" and now she shows her love for Clarke? I must agree, Lexa is a hypocrite. However, Clarke also knew this and saw right through it. It was because Clarke confronted Lexa earlier that Lexa let her guard down and kissed Clarke.
5. They don't have time for this
In fact, Lexa and Clarke had all the time in the world. They had no idea when Bellamy would succeed in shutting down the acid fog and the only thing they could really do is wait. Also, Jason Rothenberg has repeatedly used the pyramid of Maslow when discussing the show. Since Lexa and Clarke for this short time had the bottom layer, which is physiological needs (they have food, water, shelter and clothing) and the second layer, which is safety and security (they were outside of the fog zone and they had an entire Grounder army so I'd say they were pretty safe), it was only logical that they moved on to the next layer: love and belonging. That includes friendship, family, sexual intimacy and a sense of connection. When they finished their kiss and heard the signal from Bellamy, they immediately went back to the other two layers. So they had briefly the time to focus on their own love before returning to the mission to ensure their people's safety.
6. This is a "Screw you!" to all the Bellarke fans
Nobody ever said Clexa is endgame. In fact, there is a pretty big chance Lexa will die by season's end since Alycia Debnam-Carey joined another series as a regular. And Clarke is not a lesbian, so Bellarke is still a possibility. The writers are not against it or anything, they just want to evolve the story in a natural way. Be patient. And if you really feel insulted as a Bellarke fan, let me just quote Jaha's words in this episode and alter them a bit: "This kiss is just another test of our faith."

Speaking of the former Chancellor, he and his companions are still in the desert looking for the City of Light. The opening was pretty hilarious with that guy making jokes about Grounders and Reapers and Arkers. He was blown up shortly thereafter, and the only woman on the squad also did not survive. Things got really interesting with this storyline and I'm curious to see where it leads. It's now clear that the City of Light does exist, but whatever it is remains to be seen. Apparently they have pretty advanced technology considering they had a drone. The desert scenes made for some outstanding visual scenes like the one on the left (thanks to Nirat Anop for the picture). Also, Jaha might be the most crazy man focussed on his destiny since John Locke on Lost.

Another big part of this episode was Bellamy and his mission inside Mount Weather. He had some trouble with the security card of Lovejoy and as such, his cover was blown. He still managed to get to the acid fog tanks and deactivate them. However, Cage knew all along and planned to extract Bellamy. The acid fog was also re-activated. Since Bellamy couldn't get in touch with Raven, he chose to blow up the tanks. That almost killed him, but he managed to escape the fire in time. Bellamy was pretty badass in the mountain, and I must say that I've missed that a bit in season 2. With the acid fog now finally down, the Grounder army can get in. Bellamy's next job will be to arrange the inside army, probably with the help of Echo. It will be interesting to see it all come to a head in the two-part season finale.

Elsewhere, Raven needed Wick's help to guide Bellamy through shutting down the acid fog. When Bellamy deactivated the fog, they were so happy that they almost kissed. Later, they really kissed and made out. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Their hook-up was so random that it almost looked like The 100 had to meet a quota from the CW of one sex scene per season. Of course it was meant to show how vulnerable Raven still is despite not really showing these emotions. She is still not over Finn and she still has that paralyzed leg, and it was nice that a reference to both was made. I do feel like Raven repeats the same mistake she made last year when she slept with Bellamy (also in the episode before the two-part finale). She realizes this herself though, so perhaps we won't see her sleeping with someone in next year's pre-finale episode.

Octavia showed in this episode that she is not dumb: she knows Clarke and Lexa knew about the missile. This bothers her and she confronts Clarke, making it clear that Clarke should not have done this. Unaware to Octavia, Clare later saves her life when Lexa orders Octavia to be killed. In the end, it is revealed that Indra also knows that the leaders knew, but unlike Octavia she fully supported Lexa's decision, saying her ruthlessness is a good thing. I have really grown to love Indra, and this was once again a very nice moment for her. Seriously, can they just promote Adina Porter to regular already? Also, Octavia's war cry was awesome!

Lastly, there were a lot of regulars absent in this episode. Kane, Abby, Lincoln, Jasper and Monty were not seen throughout the 42 minutes. It didn't bother me that much and I expected some of them to be absent. It seems every character that is not Clarke, Octavia or Bellamy has missed out about 3-4 episodes this season. However, I feel that Lincoln has been pretty underused this season so it would have been nice to see him. Let's hope he will play a more significant role in the season finale.

That's it for this episode. For me, this will be the last review of The 100 this season as the two-part season finale will be covered by Pablo and Jimmy. Be sure to check out their reviews after the episodes. Of course, we'll be back with reviews in season 3. Also, beginning today The 100 has a show specific account on Twitter. Read more information about that here.

What did you think of "Bodyguard of Lies"? How do you feel about the kiss between Lexa and Clarke? What are your thoughts on the Raven-Wick hook-up? How badass was Bellamy throughout this episode? And lastly, what do you think the City of Light is? I would love to hear your opinions and theories in the comments below.

The 100 ends its season with a two-part finale starting this Wednesday at 9/8c. Check out the promo of the episode here and the promotional episode photos here.

  1. Thanks for the review..... I don't mind the kiss I'm just looking for where the story leads..... but I think that the writers were very brave in writing Clarke as a bi-sexual lead character.....So excited for the 2 part season finale.. Also I think that season 3 will take place in South America or Europe..... I love how they are expanding the 100 universe what do you guys think?

  2. great review and very good points. I was happy for the Clexa fandom because if that would've been Bellarke, I would be happy over the moon but I totally agree with the points you listed. I mean it's been 8 episodes since they met vs 27 episodes for Bellarke so I can wait longer. I mean 98% of the show is action and who knows who will survive :O haha but I am very curious where this is all going to go :)

  3. I agree that the writers were very brave to have a bi-sexual lead. I'm also very excited for the season finale. I am not sure if Jaha and Murphy will really cross the ocean with that boat but I guess it's possible. I have no idea where we will end up in season 3 but I'm sure the universe will be expanded. I would love to see more of that post-apocalyptic world!

  4. Thank you! I'm glad romance isn't the show's primary focus, but instead it is all about survival. It will be interesting to see if there are any deaths in the finale. Do you think some characters are going to die?

  5. Yeah this was a great read so thank you! I didn't think I would be as excited for the City of Light storyline as I am. With everything thats going on between the battle approaching and the obvious talk of the Clarke/Lexa kiss it seems Jaha&Murphy's journey has had not only little screentime but not as much focus from the fans. The actors are doing great work and with that drone reveal?!!! I mean that was just so cool and to me is an even more exciting reveal than the white room last season. I know this won't happen till season 3 but I really hope the show will be able to incorporate atleast some of Camp Jaha/44 + kids into the City of Light storyline because whatever they have planned is sure to be exciting & quite mysterious. As far as the kiss is the concerned I still have a pretty strong opinion but I do understand to all your responses to the criticisms. My biggest issue before hand & even while watching the episode is that there wasn't development in terms of romance from Clarke & I didn't think there should have been. But it seems like it was never supposed to be romantic. The writers released the script for that scene on twitter. I don't remember the exact words but it said something along the lines of "Clarke taking refuge in a moment of human connection" that is something I could understand from her narrative & agree with. My issue is that a lot of fans seem to be romanticizing it. It's clear Lexa is falling in love if not already in love with Clarke. But that is what many are focusing on rather than where Clarke is in all of this. I'm not saying she doesn't have feelings for Lexa. But in the moment of the kiss that's not what it was about for Clarke. And I'm not trying to bring down all Clexa shippers but if you want to analyze the script and where Clarke's head space was.. technically that could have been anyone (male/female) standing before her and making the move to kiss her & Clarke would've reacted the same way. Raven/Wick hookup was super CW & yes also repetitive. But enough about that the Blakes were the really MVPs of the episode. Cannot wait to see whats in store for Octavia half grounder half sky person. & I totally agree with you about Indra. They keep surprising me with her character & I have to grown to love her.

  6. Just realized TonDC may stand for Washington DC. So the grounder dialect is a skewering of english.

I was really happy with alot of scenes in this ep. Bellamy blowing up the tanks was the best. Raven and Wick I really liked. And the Lexarke kiss, but also that Clarke recognized that she isn't ready for a real ship yet. Jaha and Murphy really do make a very good team in such an odd way. I hope that continues.

I think what's great is how we got to see so much emotion from each character. Raven missing Finn. Jaha's determination to get to the City of Light. Clarke and Lexa both showed alot of different emotions. And Bellamy's bravery. And with Raven and Clarke you could see just how damaged they are from all the warring. It's just one of the things that makes this show stand out so much. I hope we get several more seasons of it.

It could be the city of Rio de Janeiro

  8. Murphy: "Tell me, what level of crazy is too much for you? I'm just curious." Seriously, I never thought I'd say this (again), but I love him. This whole City of Light arc is getting more and more interesting. I'm pretty sure we will see more of it next season. Didn't the producer say (or one of the cast? I can't remember exactly) that they filmed some scenes of the last episode by the sea, or at least near a lake? And that in the last scene we'll get somewhere even more interesting/disturbing like the white room in the S1 finale?

What the City of Light is? I don't know. My first thought was something metaphoric, a place where everything is easier, but seeing these solar panels and the drone I'm not so sure anymore. Jaha has only one source talking about it, the family in the desert that saved him. It's a place where everything is better "for people like us" which means for those who are born deformed like the little boy or Emori. What if this whole City of Light thing is some kind of trap and a city of no return, especially for those deformed people?

There were so many great scenes in this episode. Bellamy, Wick and Raven, Clarke and Octavia and Indra, Jaha and his (dramatically reduced) merry band of pilgrims, they all had fantastic scenes. My favorite of this episode and maybe of the whole season (depends on the last two eps ;) ): Bellamy blowing up the tanks. Whoohoo!

I'm pretty undecided regarding the Clarke/Lexa kiss, and I don't know where it will lead them/us, so I'll just wait and see. But like many others I have a feeling this relationship won't last long...

  9. TonDC may stand for Washington DC! Lol I get that reasoning. I remember there was a character in some manga once who got his name from a old spaceship named himself Freed, the Ships name was Freedom.

  10. I agree with alot of what you say. I was struggling to believe that Clarke would have kissed Lexa. I had seen that there friendship was developing based on shared experience and respect but saw nothing romantic in it. I also couldn't see that Clarke would be ready to become romantically involved with anyone yet so soon after Finn and if I'm honest I was surprised she would pick Lexa with her having just tried to have Octavia killed.
However the screenshot of the script where it said that "Clarke falls into it for a moment, taking refuge in a moment of real human connection" meant it actually made sense to me and I was a lot happier as it fit in with where Clarke would be emotionally with everything going crazy around her.

As far as Raven and Wick are concerned I agree that they didn't need to go the whole way but I definitely found it believable as I feel that anytime the two are on screen together there is really amazing chemistry.

I guess this shows how people can watch the same things and have a totally different response to it. I guess thats what makes these comment sections so interesting though.

  11. It IS Washington DC. Remember the near-derelict Lincoln Memorial? After which, I'm pretty sure, Lincoln is named. Also, Mount Weather exists in reality, about 48 miles east of Washington DC.

  12. Thank you! I am very excited about what the City of Light storyline. You're right, the actors do a great job and the fact that they have a drone, must implicate some advanced technology. And Murphy's one-liners are great! But yeah, Jaha and Murphy are pretty seperated from the rest so I guess some characters might join them in season 3. So happy and excited that we are getting a third season!

I understand your point of view. Clarke had clashed with Lexa various times, and it wasn't indicated that she had any feelings for her. Not until this episode where she walked out of the tent and then turned around. It was that moment that Clarke might have realized that she had some feelings for Lexa as well. I agree though, that it's unlikely that Clarke would have kissed Lexa.

Octavia and Bellamy were shining in this episode! Octavia was smart enough to figure out Lexa and Clarke's knowledge of the bomb, and she had a great moment with Indra. Bellamy was badass troughout the entire episode, which I really loved!

  13. Yeah, people really can have different interpretations of storylines which makes discussing them so great.

Again, I understand and agree that Clarke would not have kissed Lexa. She said it herself that she's not ready yet. The script does make a lot of sense, but also think about the moment when Clarke left the tent after her confrontation with Lexa. She didn't say anything, but stopped and looked back. The way I see that, it might have been a moment where Clarke realized she doesn't want to fight with Lexa. She doesn't want to fight, because Clarke cares about her. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to romanticize it and I'm in no way a real shipper, but that moment when Clarke stopped and looked back must have had some significance.

Raven and Wick do have great chemistry, but come on, Wick has only appeared in two episodes before this one. I honestly never really got why he is a fan favourite given his limited screen time. Or he must have done something in episode 11 of last season that made him memorable. I honestly don't remember. This show moves so fast that it's hard to imagine what happened in season 1.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Wick's a fun character but I also don't understand the appeal. I would enjoy seeing more of side characters like Miller,Harper,Jackson,or even Sinclair who atleast have some relevance besides to one character (raven) before Wick haha. But like both of ya'll said different interpretations&preferences is what makes the show so great. Controversy.. discussion..etc! I must say though I found that moment with Clarke looking back at the tent alot more dramatic/cheezy & not really the type of stuff that the show usually does so that's why I was somewhat surprised but I suppose its possible Clarke realized she cared for her in that moment... but whether that was just beyond a political aspect more like how she cares for everyone else she cares about (that I myself found their relationship to be) or romantically again is up for interpretation haha.

  16. Since the name has since been creolized, we might as well call it "Tondisi". :D

  17. All the episodes post hiatus are blurring into one but the one where they march to TonDC for the burial ritual showed an old road sign that showed the last part of Washington DC and 10 miles. I didn't catch it the first time I watched that episode but have on my subsequent viewings of it.

  18. If Clarke had simply turned around with the confused look on her face and nothing else then I'd agree, that moment wouldn't have had much significance to suggest she had any romantic feelings for Lexa. However, after she turned back, she took a deep breath that she slowly let out, which to me was an acknowledgement of something deeper than just friends/co-leaders. That and all the long gazes in this episode and previous ones make the kiss realistic. Just my thoughts.

  19. Great review Daniel! I'll leave the kiss for the last and comment about everything else first:
Ok, so pretty much outstanding episode as a whole: the Bellamy bit at the end was pretty intense and awesome; when he was calling for Raven my heart skip a beat and suddenly I pictured the acid fog comming and everything going to hell, but luckily it didn't, the show gave us a little break and a victory with Bellamy saving everyone. Awesome stuff.

Raven's bits were also quite well, showing us how complex her character is; she has a nice thing going on with Wick, but she's a really emotional wreck something that makes sense but we don't get to see often due to her limited screen time and being often focused on work, but here we got to chance to see it and Lindsey Morgan did an amazing job, as usual. Kudos to her - and to the whole cast, actually.

And now the kiss: it is a very sensitive issue for me personally - I have already stated how it affects me as a bisexual on the what did you think thread -. It's really nice to be representated like that, because Clarke may be bisexual, but that's not the first adjective you would describe her with, it would come as a sidedish as opposed as a defining trait, and the way the kiss was treated was both tender and believeable - you made a very good case above! -. So I was really happy with it, not only because it makes for great representation - which is a huge deal -, but because it was delivered in an organic way rather than forced and that's something really great to accomplish.

So the writers are doing a hell of a job. Heck, I'm even warming up to Murphy! And I used to despise him with every inch of my being! Maybe Jaha is right about second chances.

Anyway, The 100 continues to be awesome, and probably a show that is just taylor made for me :)

  20. Yeah it could be since they are crossing the ocean

  21. I feel like they might end up so..... which wouldn't be so smart because it would take them longer to get back to tell the others.....

  22. I'm pretty sure that's what they intended because remember that they still had giant a Abraham Lincoln.

  23. I can't agree about the kiss. For me it was still a push-in rather than a natural development of the story. I can't accept Clarke being into Lexa. I just can't. And what, five minutes after finding out Lexa ordered to kill one of her friends behind her back? And about two weeks after Clarke killed Finn because of Lexa? That's terrible writing! Not realistic at all. I don't care if they spend a lot of time together, Lexa makes Clarke a terrible person and I cannot support this kind of a ship. I really wish people would stop being in awe for the bisexual part and focus on the storyline and characterization more.

As for the other things, I just love Murphy's snarky comments. Kind of like how Jaha fathers and guides him. They make a fun team. Also, the CIty of Light storyline is by far the most mysterious one and I just can't wait to see how it evolves and whatever it is they find.

Bellamy is a badass, as has been pretty much since mid-season 1. There is no single thing about him to dislike. Love him to pieces.
