It's got a good 4 seasons in it at least. The writers are so good, they've made it look effortless so far.
What you also have to remember is that POI is relevant to what's happening today in the world of intelligence and technology. These two fields have developed massively in the short time POI has been on. They are two of this decade's most important concerns, so POI does not have to worry about staying relevant in that respect at all.
What will also be a factor is how long each character remains relevant and useful to the storyline. The only one without a realistic expiry date at present is Finch. Root, Fusco, Shaw and possibly Reese could conceivably meet their demise. Next season will be pretty definitive because I'm picking another character aligned with law enforcement to be introduced, and it's possible someone could be introduced to temporarily replace Shaw. Root could be gone as early as mid season 5.

I'd say 6 seasons is a good run. My fear is that they will just go ahead and randomly kill off characters for "shock value" to bring along the storyline. But most of the time it just hurts the show.
I love this show and as long as the actors are happy with their characters and the show runner/writers don't suddenly go off the deep end(SPN I am talking about you) I will stay with the show.
That's what my fear was with Shaw, but then I found out that the actress is pregnant with twins, and is open to returning in a year or so, and then we got confirmation in this weeks episode that Shaw's still alive, so.
That said, the main characters are treating her as dead, so you're right in that death is being treated as a vehicle to progress narrative. However, I'd argue that that's deeper than the shock value alone that most shows leave a death with, so I'm pretty content here.
6-8 works for me. The story's quickly getting heavier with each arc, and I love that. This is definitely among the best serial/procedural hybrids I've seen, and that nice blend adds a good bit of longevity for me. Personally, I don't like my shows to go over six-ish seasons unless they really have the juice to sustain further story developments. But from my experience, almost every show that goes past a sixth seasons ends up just dragging its feet until the network finally pulls the plug.
Depending on how the writers of Person of Interest balance the serialized elements with the procedural in the fifth season, will ultimately be the deciding factor here, I think. I think Person of Interest is one of the rare shows that may be able to go past six seasons. But I'd hate for it to go past eight. I'm certain I'd completely lose interest by then, and I can't imagine anything new or exciting could still be conceived by then.
Not sure when they should end, but the show could probably survive without it's current cast. Sure, the casting would make or break it that direction though. But I also don't consider the cast the main characters anymore, but maybe that is just me.
I went with 6 seasons. I think if they had to wrap it up with 5, they easily could, but I think they have enough reoccurring important characters with stories to tell and maybe a few more game changers to fill 6 seasons. I fear if it goes beyond that, it will have to seriously morph into something else and start to fall apart....
A 22-episode Season 6. With the way Samaritain has taken over the world and Team Machine's death rate, there is no way an implosion doesn't take place at some point where either side faces losses heavy enough to not make them a player in the war no more. Plus the show is a procedural no more and heavily serialized ones, especially when their quality is high as PoI (Breaking Bad, Lost,etc), usually last 5-6 seasons & you don't want the show to drag on (which I highly doubt co-creater/genius Jonathan Nolan would allow in any timeline).
I didn't take Shaw into account because of the reasons you mentioned. They didn't want to get rid of her. It was not the writers decision. I like how they handled it though. It's clearly a sign that they don't want to lose her character. The Shaw situation could be a lucky thing though. Because sooner or later the writers would have felt the need to kill someone off.
If we really take a sober look at it then Harold is the only one who is really necessary to the show. Well they could kill everyone off including the machine and base the whole show on Samaritan. I guess an evil ASI taking over the world and experiment with the people like it did in Maple would make great TV too.
How long do I want it to run? Forever, of course...How long will it realistically run? I'd say definitely 1 more season - with luck 2 more seasons...If we get 3 more seasons I'd b shocked but eternally grateful :)
I somehow would like it to end at season 5, but it feels one season short. So 6 seasons would be great, because I think its the perfect balance of 3 and 3 to a great show. 7 would be one season too long for me.
I voted Season 6, but really as long as the writing is good that's all that matters. That and it not having a surprise cancellation. The writers need time to wrap properly. This show doesn't deserve to end on a cliffhanger with open story lines.
6 or 7. Biggest concern is CBS generally keeps series until they're no longer profitable and then end them without a proper finale. At least when it comes to dramas.
I recently re-watched the entire series so far and there were several elements that I had completely forgotten about and I wanted to know if anyone thinks that the writers might pick them up again:
1) S2 ep 7 Critical: The mysterious Brit operative played by Julian Sands who co-ordinated the threat against Dr. Madeleine Enright to kill a billionaire patient.
2) S2 ep 11 2 Pi R: The compression algorithm that the student invented that compressed masses of data to a manageable size.
3) S2 ep 14 One Percept: The billionaire who put a bug in the $100K watch that he gave to Reese.
4)S3 ep 15 Last Call: The sinister voiced Fix-It man who had been hired to manipulate and possibly kill the emergency call centre worker. He seemed to be doing the same sort of work that Root had been doing before she met The Machine.
Like the top comments already state, it should go on as long as everyone involved is still passionate about it. Right now, it's hard to imagine the series ending as it seems like we're just in the middle now ('The Devil's Share' pretty much acts as the finale of 'Person of Interest: Act One'). Samaritan/Decima is obviously the main threat right now, but I don't see it being the series' endgame. Northern Lights will obviously continue even without Samaritan. Plus Elias and Dominic's rivalry will have to come to a head. I think Root's arc may see her become an antagonist again at some point. Also 'The Voice' (from 'Last Call') and Alistair Wesley may represent new ongoing antagonists. That's a lot of story to fill in any short amount of time. So six or seven seasons would probably be best.
So long as the actors are happy to keep coming back and they're not running low on story ideas it should keep going.... soon as any of those aren't happening they need to bring it to a close IMO.
From a sole personal point of view I couldn't care less if he's on the show or not since Finch is the only one who is really "necessary" to the show. But they will piss off a lot of people if they actually kill him off. For a lot of people he IS the show. Many viewers will quit the show if that happens. The only thing I can see is they let him die during a final season when they already decided to end the show.
Oh, I just noticed my second USD poll was chosen. :) I was wondering about that question myself - how long I think would probably be the best length for POI. Since it is serialized now, this logically means a much more limited time frame than procedural. Also, I kept the ratings in mind - Season 5 should work out, but my biggest fear is the show gambling on Season "x+1" and then getting axed relatively late in Season "x". If the show ended without a proper conclusion, I'd be so done. :S
So I'm somewhere around Season 5-6, while I think 6 just fits better, 5 seems much more safe with the rather.. well, "acceptable but not with much space" ratings. So my answer is "6" full seasons. :)
I don't think the concept of the show can ever get truly tired especially with the way the writers keep things fresh and innovative. Ratings won't allow it but the show would be able to last for a very long time creatively speaking IMO.
