The Originals - The Devil Is Damned - Review

14 Feb 2015

This week’s episode was quite explosive. Hayley and Jackson went through more wedding preparations, and fought off some vampires in between. Klaus, Kol and Rebekah worked together to weaken Finn, while Elijah finished him off by blowing up the house. Cami and Hope took a little field trip and Hope saved Cami from the fire.

Best reunion: I was actually looking forward to the reunion between Freya and Finn. I find their relationship interesting, mainly because we know so little about it. We know they grow up together for at least 5 or 6 years. So they had to have formed some kind of attachment to each other. And little Finn crying over Freya is a scene that was very much in my mind during their reunion. We got a little bit of Freya’s backstory, which revealed that she’s not on Dahlia’s side. She does seem to agree with Finn in regards to Hope, but I guess that’s largely due to her fear that Dahlia will rise. However, she did not help Finn when he went on his little adventure so I still hope she hasn’t chosen a side yet. Though, I can’t say I’d blame her if she chose Finn. If I had to choose between the sibling I know and love, and the siblings I’ve never met and have heard lot’s disturbing things about (let’s face it, she's probably heared all the bad stuff), I’d go with the familiar as well.
Best teamwork: It’s a shame Elijah was still away this week, because he would have been a great addition to the scenes between Klaus, Kol and Rebekah. Finally Kol and Klaus hashed things out, even if it was with a lot of yelling. I was very impressed with Daniel Sharman this week. He and Joseph did a stellar job this week. We saw a similar scene last year with Rebekah. Lots of yelling, one person telling Klaus to kill him/her, Klaus saying the doesn’t want to because they’re family. Klaus does love his siblings, he just has a weird way of showing it. Klaus literally put his own life into Kol’s hands this week, so I think the fights between them might be over for now. Or at least a week or two. Kol and Rebekah seem to also have forgiven each other. I wish there had been a little more dialogue there, but I guess we might get that in future episodes.

Best display of power: So we knew Hope could heal herself, seeing as she’s healed Hayley before being born. But I think our reactions were all similar to Cami’s when Hope turned off the car. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t get it at first. I thought the car stopped due to some backlash of Finn’s magic. It’s not until after the explosion and the dramatic zoom in on Hope that I figured out what happened. We all have our slow moments. So, I saw people throwing around the term ‘precognition’ which is basically being able to see into the future. We’ve never seen a witch being able to do that, not even one as powerful as Esther or, as far as we know, Dahlia. Which makes me think Hope will be categorized as something new. I racked my brain for other species in the ‘Vampire Diaries’ universe that we haven’t come across in the shows yet and all I could think of were the guardians, but Hope hardly fits the criteria for that. I guess we’ll find out what she is soon enough.
Best karma: Elijah still has a long way to go. It was obvious how much the sight of blood affected him, both Hope’s and his own. But unlike in the diner earlier in the season, he didn’t completely let it cloud his mind. He knew he couldn’t outfight Finn so decided to trick him by letting the house fill up with gas so he could blow it up. We know Elijah will be fine, fire can’t destroy an Original, but Finn however… Unless he took extra precautions, which I doubt he did, his current body will have been destroyed. Meaning that the next time we see him, it will be with an entirely new face. He’s been a great antagonist this season, but I think it’s time for a new one. I do have one concern: now that he’s been severely weakened, what happens to Esther and Mikael. We saw that once Kol and Rebekah stopped channeling Klaus, he woke up. Did they wake up as well, because that would be really bad.

Best conclusion of a storyline: I’m glad the storyline revolving around Marcel’s vampires has come to an end. There’s only so many places you can go with it before doing permanent damage to the characters. I can’t imagine their attack on the alphas, or former alphas, will go over very well with the werewolf community.

Best quotes: Rebekah: “Hayley’s getting married? Well, what in hell else did I miss?”
Klaus: “You are a Mikaelson. You’re my blood, and I need you. I need you by my side.”
Elijah: “You have disgraced this family for the last time. Goodbye, brother.”

I have a feeling next week will be a big episode, check in again then for a new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.

  1. So what do you guys think Hope is? A witch or something new? Also, were my eyes deceiving me or did Cami get a haircut?

  2. So glad Hope's witchy powers are manifesting, that was so bad ass. As was Eliijah's method of taking out Finn. (Who is quite attractive in his new body but annoying as hell!!)

  3. Great complilation Jamie!
I can't wait to explore Hope more. I just see that one day Klaus get diamond daggered and around 15 years have passed and we got 17 year old Hope rulling over Nola. P.S. I also noticed Cami's hair.
Daniel Gillies did a marvelous job this week. I always enjoy his dramatic interpratations of Elijah and those moments when he does something completely unexpected.
Liked Koleb as well this week. Daniel Sherman finally gave some much needed edge to his Kol version.

  4. Elijah gave her the hair cut. It's his secret skill and part of this ongoing therapy. Calms him down. ;) :)

  5. I don't think current Finn is going anywhere, or at least he won't be away from his current host body, considering the actor who plays him was just made into a regular. So there might be some looney way from writers to keep the character alive in some form, even if its gonna be the host still alive.

  6. They ( the writers) better have some good reason for Finn to be in the same body then - no way his body survived that blast.

  7. Great aspects of this episode-
    1.Freya and vincent reunion.
2.Elijah burning the whole house down using himself as a light-match-Brilliant!
3.Caleb and klaus scenes-Heartbreaking.Caleb-rebekah scenes-Emotional.Daniel sharman killed it this episode. Why does he have to die?
    Sucky aspects of this episode-
1.The whole magic-baby bit.I thought once was enough in Charmed.Rehash once again is not necessary.
2.Vincent being a series regular, will somehow survive the combustion and that makes me mad. What was the point of that arson if he walks anyway?
    3.No davina,josh-Bad writers.I missed them.
    4.Marcel needs more screen-time & definitely a better storyline.
    Great review!

  8. I really missed Davina and Josh too, they usually bring some light to the show even when they're scenes are dark. ;)

  9. I expected Freya to go looking for Finn first and just join up with him, but I didn't expect Elijah to be the one to kill Finn. The title "The Devil is Damned" was probably chosen first and foremost because it's NOLA-themed, but I think it also refers to the fact that Kol is a friend to no one but himself unless he's dying. If Rebekah finds a way to cure him, he'll be back to his old tricks again. This is why Kol will probably die. If he survives, Klaus will seriously regret giving him the white oak stake. This show doesn't make characters change for the better overnight.

  12. I thought this episode was really good I am so glad that Daniel Gillies is back than more than one episode and Hope is so cute. I like Cam and Elijah as friends and the comment that she made about her virginity and he chose to fix the house. Daniel Gllies is one sexy man he can cook, dishes and fix things. I liked Kol this episode and I don't want him to go anywhere and I cant stand Vincent. The boring part for me is this stupid wedding and I still think that Jackson is boring and don't want this to happen. Feared for Elijah but I know he will be OK, the powers of Hope will be interesting and don't trust Jackson or Freya

  13. I've seen people say it could have been a few things that Hope was doing. Seeing the future, sensing Finn was there, or sensing the gas.

  14. Something never before seen, because normally werewolf/vampires can't exist with being a witch if we go with the shows mythology. Not sure what she s though, just at least she is none of the above.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just watch this pic and tell me you don't want to see this happening on-screen-

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love how they actually look like brothers , the casting was great.

  17. The denim jacket on Daniel looks so out of place.

    ReplyDelete
  18. If you ask me,he looks even more handsome,if that's even possible. He's already so dashing!

  19. Hope can certainly sense the danger coming towards her, that's for sure. That's why the car magically stopped working so that cami would be delayed reaching home. For no,this track is interesting but overdoing it can prove dangerous for the show.I hope they don't screw it up.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hope's something never seen before: she's a vampire, werewolf and witch all together, she has vampire attributes: she can heal herself and others and turn humans, she has the werewolf gene because of Klaus and Hayley and she's a witch because of Klaus mother's side. is Cami's hair shorter or is it something else? and what's a Guardian? never heard it before in this universe before. i don't think vincent's alive at ALL, he wouldn't have had enough time to body jump

  21. Josh has dark scenes? LOL

  22. "The Devil is Damned" is a New Orleans title? i thought the show didn't put NOLA titles anymore, what does it mean? and you really think Kaleb will still be out for himself once he's cured? even after all he went through in this episode?

    ReplyDelete
  23. nah it doesn't feel like Nathaniel fits anymore

  24. TO isn't about everyone kissing and making up. It's about everyone kissing and making up when it's convenient for them, and then more family drama ensuing the following week. I don't know if Kol will die or not. Rebekah seemed desperate to save her brother last week, but she might do it just to turn around and get even for what he did to her. We know that she's not going back into her Original body because Claire Holt is done on the show, except for maybe an occasional flashback appearance. We know that Rebekah won't go into another body that she might want more because that would mean casting someone else to play her. When Klaus finds out that Rebekah is staying mortal and isn't going to be his blood sister anymore for whatever reason (which will probably turn out to be Rebekah's decision and Kol's fault for causing the problem), Klaus will turn on both of them again. Kol's intention was to keep taking over bodies every time he started to age or every time he died. This is a moral issue that I think the show needs to address, and I'm sure someone will address it, but I can see Klaus eventually making Rebekah a vampire to keep her with him and the family for eternity and to prevent her from interfering and mingling too much with the witches. I think the time will come soon when the Originals will no longer be able to use Limbo and the coven for reasons that would only benefit them.

  25. About what? You have tovstart to make more concrete questions. I wrote about 3 different topics.

    ReplyDelete
  26. about Kaleb's edge and i'll put concret questions from now on

    ReplyDelete
  27. yeah i guess, and the titles i haven't seen any reference to New Orleans since season 1 and the season 2 premiere so what's this episode mean, a song? street name? bar? or legend?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe I'm wrong and they stopped connecting the titles to New Orleans after Season 1. I stopped paying attention to episode titles a long time ago. The writers make sure that you can't guess everything that will happen in an episode just by knowing the title.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You don't have to be sorry. Just make full questions, from now on. I noticed it, not only when you comment my posts.
I meant that he was much more interesting and I believed the lines he was acting.

    ReplyDelete
  30. yeah the season 2 premiere was about a band called Rebirth Brass Band from New Orleans but after that i don' see any more references to NOLA and i miss that, i really like themed episode titles for TV shows. Since shows barely show opening sequences it's cool to have themed episode titles

    ReplyDelete
  31. ah, i guess i just saw a more human side to Kol in this human body and i liked that because he was less intersting and boring in his vamp body

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yep, Nathaniel Buzolic was a bit overacted, really didn't liked his performance. Not a huge fan of Daniel as well but liked him this week.

    ReplyDelete
  33. is it the accent? because that's the actor's native accent

    ReplyDelete
  34. Don't know. I just don't feel his act.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Not from where i'm standing!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I just mean, scenes where they're not being bffs or he's almost killing his bf.

    ReplyDelete
  37. If Hope can sense danger why did she pull the table cloth on her head? Or can she only sense life threatening danger? o_O

    ReplyDelete
  38. That can be the only logical explanation here TBH.

  39. Nate will always be Kol. End of story

    ReplyDelete
  40. Finn/Vincent has been upgraded to regular recently. If one will die, it will be Kol. I just hope he would return in his own body. And while he loves being a witch, it's also obvious that he hates being mortal and weak.

    ReplyDelete
  41. just because he's a regular doesn't mean he's safe he BLEW UP he's in a human body

    ReplyDelete
  42. they confirmed that the wedding happens so they sunk the Hayley and Elijah ship

    ReplyDelete
  43. well he was boring as him

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hope is a quarter witch with vampire blood and werewolf gene. she can heal herself bec of the vampire blood and she can sense danger bec of her werewolf gene.

if she kills, werewolf gene gets triggered. if she dies, she becomes a hybrid

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hope can sense danger bec she has werewolf gene and some werewolves according to Jackson can sense danger even miles away

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think so too. Nate is perfect for vamp Kol who's homicidal maniac sociopath.... he'll not fit witch Kol who is a little tamer. The 2 Kols have different personalities

    ReplyDelete
  47. Charmed was not exactly the first supernatural piece of fiction that used the idea of a baby having magical powers of its own that it uses to defend itself or its loved ones. I actually like the idea being used in this case and think it will be interesting when Dahlia sooner or lates comes to get her and it may be Hope herself who fights her off, and not Hayley, Klaus, Elijah, the wolves or the vampires.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Which show used this concept of Magical baby before Charmed?I would like to know.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The X-files had an episode where a very young child had supernatural powers that it used to defend itself, and then you have a movie like The Omen, Damian could use his powers from the moment he was born. Neither of them were witches, werewolves or vampires, but the concept of a newborn being able to use its supernatural powers didn't start with Charmed. I also remember magical babies being used in a couple of childrens stories I read as a toddler, but it's so long ago that I can't remember what it was called or who wrote it.
