The Mentalist - Series Finale - Review

19 Feb 2015

A personal premise: We all know it was coming. Last year The Mentalist was renewed when no one could even think about it. Fans were blessed. Season seven has been gone and passed so fast in those two months, and now I'm here, reviewing The Mentalist for the last time. I think I'm going to miss this, not because this show has been an important part of my life, but also because it was one of the first shows I watched in its original language - and it helped to improve my English - and I met so many beautiful and kind people in this fandom. Well, let's talk about the series finale now, because Jane and Lisbon got married.

In the first part of two hour series finale, Brown Shag Carpet, Jane agrees to once again pretend to be a renowned psychic and be used as bait in an attempt to lure out a serial killer and give the FBI a chance to apprehend him.

Remember the house Patrick Jane saw in the last episode when he woke up in the middle of nowhere? Well, he's going to buy it for Lisbon. He wants to show her he wants to spend his life with her, that he's ready. But she has some questions first: is Jane serious? Or at the firist obstacles he's going to leave again? And what about taking off his wedding ring? Aw, man. He's afraid of letting go, looks like. There's no time to answer that question, because they're called on the crime scene.

Lazarus. Why is Lazarus taking people's blood? Vampire? Thanks God this is not The Vampire Diaries. Agent Tork is back to help the team, but he's not helpful at all when he suggests to catch the serial killer pretendng Jane's a psychic and so they can trap him. Last time Jane did that, his wife and his daughter got murdered by Red John. Imaging something like that to Lisbon is speechless. Neverthless, Jane agrees to come back the way we was and it works: Lazarus contacts him during a radio transmission and later kidnaps him. Abbott knows if he didn't kill him, it means he wants something from him. In fact, Lazarus tests Jane's 'psychic' powers when he's asked to tell his own story; no friends during childhood, everyone looked like robots to him, he reminds me a young Norman Bates. And he's still treating people like that when he follows an ancient ritual, black magic, of harvesting blood to call spirits. While Lazarus is gone, Jane manages to break free and take a look around the place he's been hold. This helps him to find a connection with Lazarus: are they helping each other to let their spirits from the past go away? Lazarus's case is more creepier tho: he can't let his father go, in fact he kepts his body in his own house (anyone remember Pyscho?).

Jason Wylie is growing up as character. Michelle Vega's shadow has still a big impact on him, but her death caused him to be more adult. In order to catch the killer, Wylie gets the attention he was looking for when he asks the team to follow the blood lead. Cho finds definitely his bro mate in this young guy.

Teresa Lisbon does everything she can to save her boyfriend, even going through the fire to rescue him. She thought she had lost him again, like in that terrible explosion back in "Red John" episode in season 6. There's more than than: Lisbon has afraid to lose Jane every day, either pshysically or mentally. If Jane would have died, Lisbon would have been dead too, inside. Life is too precious, so 24 hours later, Jane signs the contract and the dreamhouse is his.

In the second part, White Orchids, Lisbon accepts Jane’s surprise marriage proposal, but a killer’s quest for revenge may cost them the happy ending they’ve worked so hard to achieve. Original cast members Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti return.

Lazarus rises again, so Jane does. But in different ways. Lazarus is rebuilt himself, walking like a man just came back from death (in the Biblic form) searching for revenge. Agent Tork makes the unconscious mistake to reveal Lazarus that Jane is getting married. As Lazarus is waiting for them to kill, he's caught into a trap and arrested. Jane's plan always works. See what happens with Jane is honest with Lisbon?

Patrick Jane came back to life from the ashes: a new man; a new house, a new wedding ring. The scene in which he explains to Lisbon what that ring meant to him was amazing and emotional - most like the sunset scene in season 6, "You have no idea what you mean, what you meant to me." True. That ring represents Jane's past (his wedding with Angela, his past life as con man) and his future (Lisbon). Without that ring, he and Lisbon would have never met. And it's awesome how after all those years, Teresa Lisbon remains the only mystery he has never solved, since he didn't know how she would have react about that proposal.

As they share the good news with the team, Jane thanks Dennis Abbott for everything he has done for him. He gave him a reason to come back in "My Blue Heaven", he trusted him, he's become a good friend and a mate. Teresa Lisbon wants a small wedding, just the two of them, but Jane seems pretty serious on buying her a new wedding ring - whoa! Meanwhile, Lisbon asks Kimball Cho's help to chose her wedding dress, and it's not an easy choice, but thanks God he's a good fashion stylist. Picking Cho as her consultant was a great idea. Before being friends, those two are brother and sister at work, they have always had each other's back, and when Jane is missing, he's always there for her. Also, Wylie looks like a perfect wedding consultant when he helps her to prepare everything. Tho, Lisbon still needs to get accostumed to the idea of getting married, since when Jane gives her the wedding ring, a normal person would have answered "Oh my God!" but Teresa Lisbon doesn't. "Are you out of your mind?" Speaking of friends, Grace Van Pelt and Wayne Rigsby make their return and win their bet: they've always known that Jane and Lisbon would have got together one day.

Later, Lisbon's brothers and their family appear. Lisbon has to get ready to deal with the new Jimmy's chick who already calls her 'sisters'. Lisbon, run lol this wasn't exactly what she wanted. Jane approaches and agree to get married just the two of us and a judge - that later is revealed to be a trap to catch Lazarus. Poor woman, holding a gun even in her wedding dress. Good way to go down the aisle.

The wedding scene was perfect. All those people smiling weren't the characters, but the actors. Have such a beautiful ending and a closure is blessing. Everyone was satisfied that those two finally get married.

Then, the last scene. Another prove Lisbon has always been a mystery to Jane is gathering into this beautiful moment. Without saying anything, Jane understands that Lisbon is pregnant with his child. Now I get why Lisbon was so afraid about Jane leave again. She didn't want to be a single mother and raise her child all alone. She doesn't want to end up like her mother, or being the big sister helping her brother. She wants to be more than that, and she's ready. Jane can't be happier. He's a new family now, and we're not talking only about Lisbon. He founds a beautiful team, always supportive. In moments like that you realize the circle of life is complete. The Mentalist's journey ends her with a lesson. You need to go throught Hell (Red John, past's demons, being cold) to find Paradise (happiness, love, friendship), because life is full of surprises, and the only thing you wanted most is right here. You only need to find the courage to let yourself go.

Thanks everyone for reading my reviews. It was a beautiful trip. I'm going to miss The Mentalist very much.

  1. Love the consolidated Hollywood 'happy ending'. Best endings of all.

  2. Thank you for this amazing review. It's so sad that it will be the last one. Just like you I improved my English watching Mentalist. It's a lot easier when you watch something you love. This show was so wonderful because of those amazing characters and the wonderful job of the actors who made them so real. The last two episodes couldn't be better, pure Mentalist.
Once again thank you from a fan from Poland.

  3. I cried with the episode and cried with this review! TM was a whole body that worked: actors, cast, crew, characters and fans! I'm so happy but I know the next weeks will be hard! ๐Ÿ˜“ (My English still bad ๐Ÿ˜ถ)

    Great review Diana!

  5. These episodes were so intense and funny at the one and the same moment. I was really scared when J&L were entering that cabin while that nut was sticking around. And then it was just like "Surprise, *itch. We don't have time to babysit you. Hands up!" That was amazing! The best finale I could wish for!!!Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm not sad anymore. I was before watching, but now I'm just happy. I'm happy that my favourite show has got the chance to finish in a proper way. And I really don't feel that it's the end. They managed to create such a finale that it looks like the beginning! I don't think that I'm able to stick to another show like I stuck to The Mentalist. They totally conquered my heart. And I'm deeply grateful for all the people connected with it - cast, crew and marvellous TM fandom! We are all still here, TM is still here and I like that they left a kind of an open ending, so we do not know for sure are J&L going to leave FBI or not. It's not a big deal actually. These two has gone through so many things that they can handle everything!
    Too many words, sorry)

Perfect ! I think we couldn't have hope for a better ending. I'm still so happy about the very last scene. My heart melt <3

  7. Brilliant ending. I loved every scene, every minute of it. It was so cute that Lisbon chose Cho to help find her a dress. He did a good job. The wedding getting out of hand so funny and it's what happens to weddings. Jane was so clever with his plan. There are so many more stories left to tell I wish they hadn't ended the show

  8. Me too - exactly ...I was sad before the show thinking we are losing a great series...but now after watching the finale I am so happy! And you are right- I just feel like no matter what adversity those two will stick together. They are soul mates! Like Jane said 'promise to look on the bright side' - I love that message!

  9. Great review Diana - thank you! It has been a pleasure to follow your reviews and the commentary that they generate. The finale to me was perfect would not change a thing. I loved the final scene with the two of them looking over at the wedding - knowing that they didn't need a big party just each other (and now their family). Weddings often take a life of their own - and become important to the families of the bride/groom and the friends.... and I felt like Jane and Lisbon could have eloped but did this wedding for the fans so that we could celebrate their life too! So many classic moments like Cho and the wedding dresses, Teresea whipping out a gun under her bouquet, her reaction to the ring which was an amazing ring by the way.... I am still trying to figure out when Lisbon discovered she was pregnant, why she waited to say anything until that moment. Oh well guess it is open for each ones interpretation!

  10. Thanks ,Diana, for helping me relive the lovely journey that was last night's episode. Though this was never my favorite show I always enjoyed it and did not realize I would miss these characters so much until the last few episodes. The show runners smoothly made the transition for the leads from co-workers and friends to lovers without making it seemed forced, and that was no easy task given the nature of the two. They stayed true to the personalities and did not ram love scenes down our throats - they were not necessary and would have felt very awkward. But the series' finale was perfection. Having Cho be Lisbon's bridal dress consultant was just brilliant , I loved every second of them at the bridal shop -- so funny and yet so special because they were friends ( and Cho's serious confidence in his role as consultant was hilarious yet rang so true to him). The joyous nature of the wedding did not seem like acting - it was more a cast letting it go with lots of fun. But that last scene was so touching I welled up just the tiniest little bit. Thanks again.

  11. I guess, she had already known about pregnancy when she asked about the ring.

  12. I wonder if she had not said anything because he had left her and disappeared and would not take her calls. I think she already knew then.

  13. when the show started jane was after red john the man who killed his wife and child last season he finally caught him and killed him then this season lisbon and jane became a proper couple and last night they got married and now it looks like jane is gonna have a child again and start his new life with lisbon and their child.
    gotta love happy endings

Thanks Diana, this review is great! I also love TM because is one of the first show I've watched in English without subs.. so proud of Myself when I understood the dialogues ;D
Anyway, the episode was great! The last scene so touching I almost cried! Beautiful!
I 'll really miss this show! I was so in love with the CBI team first and then for FBIs..
it's all over now but TM really worths it!

  15. I agree, also she was more worried then she normally gets when he blew up in the house!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Possible although then that was a big secret to hold for a few weeks. She could have mentioned after he bought the house or they got engaged then... oh well guess no point trying to figure it out. It was a very sweet moment when she told him as the final scene, so I suppose it made sense to wait from a fan point of view!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree. Lot of people complained of lack of physical contact throughout the series, but I found it sweet and perfect considering their style of relationship. Now I would say ...what about that kiss when announced husband and wife? That was something! Lisbon herself looked shocked when she came up for air!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I could be wrong and you could be correct but I thought the timeline was much shorter than that. And I believe the wedding was just a couple of days after they got engaged.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I like the post wedding dance party, it felt like a joyful time. Jane got good news at the end. That's cool. And I can predict the post outcome to it all, so that's good also.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think you are right...TV timeline different from our timeline! It took years to get together, then months to get engaged and days to get pregnant and married! But that is OK - at least they stopped wasting time! :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Two words: Jisbon heaven. Oh, and also grinning like an idiot at the screen.

    ReplyDelete
  22. if Lisbon is having a girl I think she will be named after Jane's first wife and child? perhaps Charlotte Angela Jane?

    ReplyDelete
  23. And how! Lisbon was engaged to someone else not that long ago.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Perfect review for a perfect ending. Loved this series.. It was a great run!

    ReplyDelete
  25. What an amazing finale.I spent a whole day with tears on my eyes.
Great review Diana as always. The part I liked the most of what you have written is:
You need to go throught Hell to find Paradise...

For me that is exactly the life.
I'm glad this stupid killer wasn't killed because I didn't want to be any blood in their wedding.
I didn't mind that they didn't show us a lot of psysical contact .I had no need to see it to know what they were doing in their bedroom or I must say in that tiny bed at Patrick's airstream.
I'll miss TM but I know wnen I think about it I always have a smile on my face.

  26. Happy endings, everyone loves that! And they deserved it :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Agree with you ;) thanks for reading and stick around till the very end. Your English is good too ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thanks for reading :) your English is great, I think we all improved it during those 7 years. Thanks to The Mentalist!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Words are never enough for TM! In this series finale, i laughed, i cried and I got emotional... I couldn't have expected more than that! Simply perfect :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. It was a simply perfect ending for a perfect show :) Jane got everything he have always wanted: a family, a wife and a child... he's a father again <3

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks for reading :) I agree with that you wrote. Who knows, maybe Lisbon just wanted to surprise Jane, once more :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for reading and sticking till the end :) I think Heller did a great job, giving the fans a very happy ending. We all deserved that, and characters too. They made their journey, they suffered and loved, and that's what they received: love and happiness. Beautiful ending :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks :) same here, Alice ahaha TM and Grey's Anatomy were the first two shows I watched in original language (usually, in my country a tv show and movie are dubbed).

    ReplyDelete
  34. The post wedding dance party felt like the cast were dancing, instead of their characters ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks for the kind words! :) I agree with the no-blood scene. I'm gonna miss this show too, but I'm happy because I got what I wanted: a happy ending.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Than you for sticking till the end! I'm glad those reviews made you guys thinking about the whole episode... TM has always been a subtitled show and that's amazing how we can speculate about everything till the end ahaha I don't know when Lisbon understood she was pregnant... maybe at the end of episode 7.11, since she didn't want Jane to leave her alone, she was very scared back then.

    ReplyDelete
  37. First of all, thanks Diana for all your reviews, I'm gonna miss them : ))

What can I say about the finale except that it was all that the fans had dreamed about . I'm sad and glad at the same time because watching a tv show you love for seven years weeks after weeks it's something great and of course you would like more seasons but well all good things come to an end .
Thanks to the authors and actors .

    ReplyDelete
  38. DAMN! you are one hell of a reviewer LOL, i loved your review and i like what you said about the lesson The Mentalist showed the characters

    ReplyDelete
  39. were you even scared for a tiny bit, that they would "Red John" Jane again and "HIMYM" us, or did you always expect that they would respect us and give us a happy ending and not punch and spit on us like Chuck and HIMYM?

    ReplyDelete
  40. ow thanks! ๐Ÿ˜Š The Mentalist has given us so many good things!!๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ข

  41. I know that Agent Vega died a few episodes back, but I could swear I saw her on the dance floor near the end of the episode. Did anyone else see that?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Not at all. When Bruno Heller said we were getting to know Red John's identity by the end of 2013, I trusted him :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks Cath, I'm gonna miss reviewing about this show too :(

    ReplyDelete
  44. Aw thanks ahahaha :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nope, maybe her ghost? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Like you, I'm sad this show is over, but I'm glad we got a proper, happy ending. I think I can safely say this was everything we'd hoped for. :)
I've enjoyed reading your reviews; hope you stick around! :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Interesting you think she decided to get pregnant...I"d imagine it was an accident / surprise. I wouldn't of thought of her as wanting kids given her focus on work and she always seemed so awkward around kids (as opposed to Jane who seems to be a natural). And I wouldn't imagine her trying to get pregnant without clearing it with PJ first. Anyways, she seemed to be glowing when she told him so she is as thrilled as he was. I'd guess she was waiting for the right time, had some uncertainties, but was very happy in the end that it happened. By the way I think she would have married him anyways, even if she was not pregnant. But the whole timeline does introduce questions. Well that is TM - always keeps us thinking about something!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I second that thought - tell us Ms. Mack if you're picking up more shows! I enjoy the commentary and fan forums almost as much as I enjoy the shows!

I hope someday we hear that we will see a Movie. For example in Paris, because the Show was a hit in France and Simon loves Paris, I think he would accept. Perhaps will we see a surprise in the 10th Anniversay of the Show?

    ReplyDelete
  50. and now his car is in Paris and Robin said that Lisbon and Jane could live in the south of France lol a movie would be great : )

  58. Like I said, I'll be here for Grimm and Castle, and maybe some other shows around... maybe if Simon and Robin do other shows, I'll be the first to watch and review :)
