I found grace
If I lead or follow change my pace
I get tired lose my way
My lord he knows me every step of the way"

- "Every Step" - Mavis Staples

The Blacklist has been one hot show this TV season. Returning from their nearly three month long Winter break, the first episode of this season two’s second part was aired to nearly 26 million viewers in the coveted post-Super Bowl time-slot. The two-parter, “Luther Braxton”, included an incredible story line for The Blacklist that ignited the flame concerning The Fulcrum. An important item that will, no doubt, reach through every episode this season, culminating in the finale. Now The Blacklist even has guest celebrities taking the reigns behind the camera with Andrew McCarthy, James Spader's colleague from 'Pretty In Pink', directing last Thursday's episode and there are plans for two more. News for The Blacklist getting better and better each week.

The blacklister this past Thursday night, Ruslan Denisov, was an interesting criminal to focus on after the crazy escapades of ‘Luther Braxton’ from the previous two episodes. Denisov is a criminal who abducts executives while looking to fund and further his cause. His compound is based out of Uzbekistan. He brings Liz and the Task Force there to settle a disputed pipeline controversy. What we know about Red is there is always an angle with the blacklisters he brings to Liz and this week's villain is no different.

The "B" story this week is a plot thread I thought had been over for quite some time. If you recall, in the first part of season two, Liz had Tom chained up at the harbor for four months attempting to extract information on Berlin and his whereabouts. During his captivity, the Harbormaster visited the rig they were on and Liz came up with a cover she thought was sufficient to keep him away long enough for her to move Tom or conclude her business, but not before giving him her business card. The Harbormaster's curiosity got the better of him and he discovered Tom and the Samoan bodyguard Liz had watching him. Tom ended up killing the Harbormaster because of this and now his death has caught up with Liz through the efforts of Detective Wilcox, who has been assigned to the missing person case initiated by the Harbormaster's wife. This is an interesting story line and I’m excited to see where it goes. We have to wonder what will happen to Liz and how she will get out of this dire situation. Especially if she is upset with Red at the moment and reticent about seeking his assistance in any way.

The "C" story this week is about an item we have been hearing about for quite some time - The Fulcrum. We don't learn much about what Liz found in the stuffed rabbit from the last episode, but it was present and at least we see Liz asking some important questions. We see her go to Aram (whom I think should have his own spin-off show) with the secret item and even he has no idea what this object is or what it's about. Liz will have no choice except to go to Red with it and ask for his assistance. Eventually, she will have to overcome her trust issues she is currently having with him in order to do so, however.

Although this episode was not one of their best, it was still enjoyable. I do like that The Blacklist has gone back to its first season’s roots after the Berlin story line has now concluded. The Blacklist has always done an exceptional job at balancing the procedural part of the show with the serialized portion; it is what makes The Blacklist such an amazing show to keep up with week after week. The way The Blacklist sets up its story lines parallels with the way Red conducts his affairs with his friends and acquaintances - like a simple game of chess. His 'angle' this episode is to make a profit off the new company which would get the contract to build the pipeline through Uzbekistan after helping to oust the old one. Of course, this is what adds to Liz's distrust of Red and wavering loyalty to him. Red may be winning the chess match with every blacklister and executive he goes up against, but fails to win Liz's trust.

Red's Quotes

- "I hope I'm interrupting."
Red to Liz & Aram

- "I know a wonderful little hole in the wall, that's actually in a hole in the wall."
Red to Liz

- "In this world, there are no sides, only players"
Red to Liz

- "It's the confession, not the priest, that gives us absolution."
Red to Leonid Zhabin

- "Give my regards to the wife...and the mistress."
Red to his new business associate

Music from the Episode

- "Want You" by Vika
Ressler & Red discuss the current situation with Denisov

- "Every Step" by Mavis Staples
Red leaves a crate for Denisov; Liz confronts Red about his 'angle' concerning this week's blacklister; Aram tells Liz about what he discovered about the device

Thoughts and Discussion

- Do you think Liz will ask Red for assistance regarding the Harbormaster case and the predicament she has found herself in now?

- Do you think the Samoan will rat on Liz to Detective Wilcox? Or, will Red get to him first?

- Did you notice...At one point Red says, "rich as Croesus'. Since classical antiquity, this phrase has come to mean anyone with great wealth.

- Where has Tom been? When do you think he will appear in this second part of Season Two?

- We still have yet to find out what the key is used for that Red got from Pepper at the end of episode five. When will the key's purpose be revealed? Does it have anything to do with The Fulcrum?

- Why has Red not searched for the safe Fitch told him about at the end of episode eight? What is in Fitch's safe? We know the combination is 8-30-44. We know it is in St. Petersburg. does Red know what is in the safe?

- What is the object Liz found in the stuffed bunny? Even Aram could not figure what the object was by the end of the episode. He comments that it is some sort of 'beta technology'; spy equipment from the late 80's, early 90's; and/or a possible recording device; he doesn't have the faintest idea of how it works.

- Who will Liz turn to now regarding the object?

  1. I really loved this episode.

It reminded me of classic Blacklist S1. I personally liked it more than the 2 part Super Bowl episode.

  2. It was a good episode. I was thinking the same thing and thought it reminded me of a few Season 1 Eps.

  3. This one wasn't one of my favorites. I still love the show though. I worry about the pacing now that it is on Thursday against Scandal. It is going to have a hard time competing because it tends to be a slow burn.

  4. Wow! I didn't know Andrew McCarthy directed this episode!
That's very interesting and I definitely agree with you about
Aram having his own show. I like him too. He's a great guy.
He reminds me of someone very close to me.
As always, another impeccable review. Thanks for the insight!

  6. Great review! Liz really needs to decide whether she trusts Red or not and STICK to that decision.
BTW you really can't stop thinking about that key, can you? xD

  8. I agree with you that it was a fun episode, but not one of the best...
It did have a lot of great "Red-isms" throughout the episode though!

Sadly, it also had arguably the most annoying aspect of the entire series... Liz wembling forth and back about Red. Do I trust him? Do I hate him? Do I want him to be my daddy? Do I hope I'm no relation to that creep? Do they have to re-hash this tired and old plot device yet again? Oops, that last one was just me, not Liz.

Moving past that annoying bit... I enjoyed the callback to the boatyard and Tom. I think it was a clever way t bring Tom back into play. An episode or two foreplay dealing with the harbormaster's death and I expect Tom to reappear!

That local PD investigation is also an interesting way to delve into Liz's (and thereby Red's) mysterious past! The writers can have the A-plot dealing with the COTW, B-plot looking into the past, C-plot working with The Fulcrum and then connect them all in various ways. It could be fun!

I too have been wondering about Pepper's key, dammit! XD
I have always been a bit of an opponent of the Chekhov's gun principal, but in this case I support it and think the key had to be introduced for a specific reason! It was just too random otherwise!

Ignoring that fact that that stupid rabbit Liz had been hugging in depression for decades held within it a hard and sharp cornered object that should have been felt years if to decades ago.... The object Liz found looks to be more ornate than utilitarian to me. If it is/ was a recording device I wonder if it was meant to be in the open and part of some piece of furniture or objet d'art?

Like you I think it is not The Fulcrum itself, but rather a clue that will lead to it. Maybe it is the key to unlocking the encrypted code or unlocking The Fulcrum?

  9. Agreed about the retreading of old territory with her not trusting him... I feel the same way about her always beeing shocked he has an angle. Duh.

  10. Every time Liz regresses into her juvenile reactionary pout I want Red to say something similar to what Spike said on Buffy, "Hello. Vampire. I'm supposed to be treading on the dark side. What's your excuse?"

"Hello. I'm a criminal I am supposed to do immoral and unethical things that annoy some people. What's your excuse?"

  11. I wish they would create more blacklisters like him...

  12. It was not one of the best, no. But, to be honest, even an episode that is not that great for The Backlist is still good. Most shows I can't stand to watch more than once and The Blacklist I really don't mind.

You did pick good odds for Tom to come back...Over/Under 4 Eps. Lol. I took the over and I think it still might be around the 5 or 6 episode mark.

  13. I wonder how many more iconic Blacklisters we will get....

In season 1 Red was hunting for his nemesis and tracking criminals/ Blacklisters he had either used in the past or heard of that were being used to take down his organization. So many awesome characters came out of that hunt!

Now in Season 2 Red is not really hunting for anything in the criminal world since Liz is the key to Fulcrum, not random Blacklisters. This season Red has been called in on cases the task force initaited more tha before and teh cases Red has brought in are more about reestablishing his network and making money than taking out men who are a danger to him.

Of course the show centers on a COTW number and they all could be written to be more iconic like last season, but the new story does not lend itself to hunting the dangerous Blacklisters as well.

Maybe we can connect to some if the Alliance or cabal sends more after Red? As much as I love Perlman I thought Luther Braxton was a bit generic when compared to The Stewmaker, The Freelancer,The Courier, The Alchemist, The Judge or even his most direct comparison of Anslo Garrick!

  14. I really enjoy the harbour master storyline too... Sort of. It makes me very anxious lol. There have definitely been better episodes, but I thought having Red on the ground with the Blacklister all the time was great fun. Especially the negotiations haha. I was happy to see Farhan Tahir on the show! He's a Pakistani actor Yay!

Someone mentioned earlier that the 'fulcrum' might have something to do with the music box...I think so too! And whoops, totally forgot about the code he got from Fitch! Thanks for the reminder.

Great review! And I've decided to take a page out of your book and try to avoid promos... We'll see how long I last :)
