  1. Pretty good ep with the exception of all the out-of-character Reese moments. Since when would he leave during the middle of working a number to go talk to a shrink, leaving Harold on his own? Never.

  2. Loved tonight's episode. It reminded me of season 1 and season 2. Glad Zoe made an appearance. I thought we weren't going to see her again because of The 100. Then, I remembered that CBS owns the CW.

It was also great to see Blair Brown again.

  3. That was unexpectedly pleasant to have a simple mystery for a changeup. I kept worrying that Samaritan would be behind it. It was a bit of pausing from the relentless head and heart games of the last few episodes. I never realized that I would enjoy that as a relief. Not that I am not dazzled by the show's thrill a minute plotting but it was just refreshing to remember and re-experience the simpler old days, with a frothy dollop of Zoe thrown in. And now back to Dominick and maybe Elias, with a jigger of Samaritan thrown in.

  4. The highlights : (1)Finch diving behind a chair at the sight of the laser sight..and signalling his displeasure in Morse code (2)Fusco's speech at the end.

The absence of Shaw did detract the enjoyment somewhat...but this episode could easily be used to attract new viewers.

  5. Honestly found the episode abit boring. But guess you need these sorta episodes sprinkled throughout to give people abit of a breather for what will probable be an Amazing end to the season

  6. Best episode in ages.

  7. But zero Root was okay?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I've never been big on Root. She's grown on me somewhat, but I don't miss her. Not everyone's a fan of her.

    ReplyDelete
  9. By "we", I just meant me & Chandler. She's not everyone's cup of tea, and that's fine.

  10. The weaker episode last season(Provenance, I'm thinking of)at least had Shaw around for the spark. Maybe that's what threw me off. i could be wrong.

  11. That's one of the few episodes I don't ever intend to watch again (along with Reasonable Doubt {"I didn't kill my husband"}, and Last Call {the dumbass 911 caller}.

Least this one appears to have some nice character work. Provenance added nothing to the show.

  12. It was good episode like Reese opening up to the therapist and Fucso telling him don't shut him out

  13. Man this was good to watch. This episode was all about the characters, not the story, and it was beautifully executed. There was no Machine, no Samaritan, just the characters.

Paige Turco was terrific. Really good use and growth of the character. Paige is good on The 100, but in a different league on POI.

We could be looking at a new female cast member for the time being. The law enforcement background Iris Campbell brings to the table in a way replaces Carter and Shaw. Though some may be worried about Reese getting cosy with someone, all the writers are doing here is adding a bit of mystery to the guy. I'd be surprised if we ever see anything remotely "intimate" because the writers will leave a lot to the imagination. It's good growth - we get to see another side to Reese that we've only seen in flashbacks (series premiere) previously so it's a good way to grow the character.

And Fusco. Really pleased with his words in the last couple of minutes. It's the first time he's really voiced a serious (non sarcastic) opinion about what he is involved in. I'm picking he will know "the truth" come the end of the season.

In all, a really good hour. And nice of CBS to give us another minute or two longer than normal. This episode was about 43:15 excluding credits. Not many episodes on any series break the 43 minute mark any more.

  14. I love Root, if it were up to me she'll be in every episode lol. I don't miss Shaw though. So I guess everyone has their own favorites and like you said that's fine :)

  15. I wasn't familiar with Amy's work prior to the show (knew of Angel, Dollhouse, and Justice League Unlimited, but hadn't any of her stuff there), but she really sold me on Root on raw acting talent. Nolan & team have created such a fascinating arc for her. What I hope for is that once POI concludes, Jonah could sign her on either of his gigs with HBO (Westworld, which already has a first season order, and Foundation, which he's reportedly developing). She's easily one of the finest actresses on TV, and deserves to be in a show where she isn't hated by a major chunk of the fanbase.

  16. I really enjoyed this episode. The court case and the refresher back to basics was a huge plus for me. What I liked about this episode is that an actual court case was woven into the case of the week on PoI. I watch Suits and The Good Wife all the time and it was nice that PoI jumped into the judicial system for once.

This episode will get a lower reputation because it is a straightforward episode with no Samaritan as the focus but this episode really brought us back to why we fell in love with this show in the first place. John together with the therapist exploring a new avenue while rehashing some old memories is a nice touch for his character. Finch working on a PoI is very rare so it was awesome to see him up front. Fusco might be a bag of funny bones for the audience but he has shown that he cares deeply, not just for the team but for justice as well. It's really different from the very first episode and it was cool to see how far he has come.

Zoe was a welcome addition to the episode. I wish she would be a more recurring character on PoI. She knocks Zoe out of the park every time she is on screen. Love her.

I thought the timing of this standalone episode was great especially after the weight of the past 6 episodes. David Slack really picked up the slack with this episode. It could have easily gone sideways but he managed to keep things fresh while still advancing a side plot ever so forward.

  17. Good episode and it went back to the basics. Also Reese and the therapist is very interesting.

  18. A great episode that really felt like the good old days of just Finch and Reese working together. The original duo that made me interested in the show initially. It was certainly a welcome change of pace after the emotionally exhausting last couple of episodes we got haha.

It was so nice to see Blair Brown again after missing her so much on Fringe! She did not disappoint. I loved her interactions with Finch. Also, Zoe helping out with the mission was great! I love the chemistry between her and Reese :) Here's hoping Paige Turco comes back more often.

Reese talking with his therapist, Iris and letting his guard down and being more vulnerable was certainly something we haven't seen in a while. Probably since Carter. It was a really interesting aspect to watch. Now let's just hope she isn't working for Samaritan or has a different agenda and wants to cause harm to him. That would really devastate Reese because he finally has someone that he can reach out to in dire situations. He really doesn't need any more destruction in his life. Also, I loved that he was referring to Shaw when he told Iris that there was a death in the family because it's true. She's someone that he considers a sibling and I definitely see that.

Fusco standing up for himself at the end there towards Reese and saying to stop shutting him out and he doesn't get to decide how he lives his life made me really smile for the guy. Such an awesome scene and definitely a highlight. I reckon he'll find out about The Machine before the season is over.

    ReplyDelete
  19. LOL, I was afraid that I became too paranoid that my first thought when Reese opened to Iris was that "I hope she doesn't work for Samaritan".

The only reason I think she doesn't is that this would mean Samaritan has already blown up Reese's cover and knew who he is - which would make all the fuss with luring the team out of hiding a huge BS.

  20. Great episode. Liked the throwback vibe, and some really interesting character development with Reese. Starting to realize he can possibly put his guard down, that he shouldn't avoid connection to avoid loss.

  21. great ep that was somewhat "stripped down" like the early eps and focused on the characters although they put a tie in with the other overall arc with Dominic allegedly making some of Elias's people disappear (and I'm sure they'll get to that arc soon)Always great to see Zoe, and loved Fusco's talk about he's willing to run to hell for them... debating the John/Iris thing, but it's obviously a vehicle to get a window into the mystery that is John

    ReplyDelete
  22. I loved last night's episode, more than I expected. It was a well-written and implemented number case, featured a lot of John and Harold (I love every character pairing but it's not bad to have some focus on these two!), brought back Zoe, gave us Blair Brown with a great guest character (I love her!) and gave Reese some character progression. I think this episode was there when it was needed to let the characters catch up with their situation but also to get back on track for the back of the season.

Some say Reese/Iris is a bit forced (will this be a thing? Reese x Iris? I'd actually prefer them as friends) but I enjoyed that Reese's wall crumbled. It's big progression for him - but I do hope this won't get him in trouble. Interesting that Iris knew he isn't really a cop. I am actually interested in her character now. :) Plus, Reese gave some insight into his past. I enjoyed getting to know him better. It also was great to see him a bit more relaxed and.. did you see him smile? Because I did. :)

The ongoing part of this episode really was character development - realizing you can't avoid loss, you can't just shut everyone else, hope.
    I'm also proud of Fusco!

While I love the serialized POI, this was a great procedural.

  23. A nice attempt to go back to "old good" format of "Finch + Reese" show. But over the last 1.5 seasons the authors have managed to aggravate the story to such an extent, that this "old good" format is perceived now as a bit of recession. Amy Acker brings a completely different level of tension and fascination, and we've firmly hooked on this "drug". Without her you feel now a kind of "tangible vacuum".

    ReplyDelete
  24. You may be correct and myself wrong, but I took Iris saying that she knew Reese wasn't really a cop to mean that he wasn't really the personality type psychologically a cop usually is and he wasn't meant to be one, as opposed to her actually knowing his cover is fake.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I certainly understand what you are saying and I too love Amy Acker, back to the Angel days, and the writers will get back to the emotionally pounding ride of this season, but I did not see a single stand alone episode of the old format as a recession, just a small bit of a nostalgic breather. Not a "tangible vacuum" for me ( though I'll be glad to get everybody back as well) but a brief "tangible relief".

    ReplyDelete
  26. A very nice transitional episode. I really loved BB opposite ME. Nice to see PT again too!

Reese opening up a bit is a nice surprise, but I don't have a good feeling about his relationship with Iris. I think she'll get killed or she is not who she says she is. Fusco refusing to be brushed aside was also a nice touch. And where's Bear??

    ReplyDelete
  27. Unless she doesn't know who she's working for like many of Samaritan's game players or is being black-mailed (big theme this season). I like the actress and don't think the acting was bad, but rather we are suppose to notice her cohersing. She didn't stand out like this in previous episodes. (She's on The Americans and was on Boardwalk Empire). I think she is meant to remind us/Reese of Jessica, which is why I think something might have to give with her, one way or another. Maybe she will die or maybe she works for someone else other than Samaritan, but I don't imagine this working out for Reese...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well what can i say, awesome episode and it had interesting things to show. But most importantly we are getting i don't know what to call it other than the calm before the storm and i don't think that everybody will survive the storm.

    ReplyDelete
  29. No matter how or why would have Samaritan acquired her - they should have known that Detective Riley IS John Reese well before they appointed her to get close to him. But that would mean that they knew his cover identity and would have been waaay much easier to track him and find everybody else through him, than the big fuss with the stock exchange.

Hovewer I don't think it will working out for Reese either, simply because he is the Lonesome Hero. The most what I can imagine is that if at the end of the show he survives, Iris (or somebody else, who knows how long will it last?) could return and they can have a "let's try it" reunion. But not before.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Flirty Reese was a bit over the top, wasn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think what you said about waiting to see is correct. The writers certainly did not go out of their way to make her look perfectly innocent or suspect. Something feels a bit off about her but I did not take her comment in its context to be revealing of her knowing more than his psychologist would have noticed. But with POI, anything could be on the table, and delightfully so. Would not have it otherwise. Amazing show.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Most of you would probably not agree with what I'm about to write but I think this is one of the most important episodes of the show ever:
    1. Reese and Finch carrying an episode alone - it's like season 1 all over again.
    2. Reese going to a shrink - huge character development which was much needed.
    3. bringing Zoe Morgan back - you can say " yet another episode with Zoe" but this wouldn't have been a fantastic episode without her she brought the comedy and made this episode move forward.
    4. Lionel - He will take a much bigger role in the future and what he said in the end just summarized him throughout the entire show.
    5. Dominic - The writers always keep us in check never forgetting other things that went from the beginning of a season.

there was a pole about how long should POI keep going - here is an episode that shows us that all answers are acceptable because of how good is this show.

    ReplyDelete
  33. That might be, but I wouldn't be surprised given Samaritan's choice of avatar, to be a bit gratuitous and over confident in everything it does. Experimenting with human emotions, as we know also see it's doing with the likes of towns like Maple, could just be the tip of the iceberg . Samaritan may not be as morally sound or as human/humane as our machine, but it's not personality-less either. It's rather crass. It could easily think that it can take it's time with Reese, because it has some kind of painful master plan in mind, giving Reese a false sense of security.

But I agree that Reese will probably not get a real love of his life till the end of the series, and even then I could see him dying for it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. That's absolutely possible. I'll have to rewatch :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. You could be right -- it just wasn't my initial impression. Whatever is the case, you can be certain there will be more to her story than we currently know.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Samaritan has never underestimated the team and I seriously doubt that a "human experiment" would worth him letting Harold and Root on the lose.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Disagree. There are easier ways to take over the world than the way Samaritan's been doing it. It even has control over Control at this point---why tease the Government and not just destroy it/them? It's meeting with Root from the 3 episode arch gave an ultimatum, 'join me, or...' where he could of easily killed Root on site, instead of going through of all of this. (Even Greer let Root go in a season 3 episode) No this about torture and showing off it's power. It's hubris, which is not practical or just doing a job...it's about enjoying the job.

    ReplyDelete
  38. It was good to see Nina Sharp, err, I mean Blair Brown again. I kept waiting for Walter to be around.

I enjoyed the moments Reese had with the therapist, and Fusco standing up and saying count me in.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Actually, I'm still not on board with Root. I'm just happy she's not in every episode. I can take her a little better.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Previously the show used to air early in Canada and was available soon after 'internationally'. So, I was able to watch the episodes early in the morning before going off for work. That hasn't been the case since the last two episodes and I only get to watch it so late. Dammit!!!! ;) :)

Anyways, great episode. Sort of like setting up the chess pieces again for a new sort of start.

First and foremost - I absolutely loved it that the writers kept dropping some reminders about Shaw and the scene where Reese was looking at her passports sadly was such a 'tugging at the heart strings' kind of scene.

Reese and Iris - Wow!! I find myself liking her even more. After a long time, the show got back to some backstory on Reese and him opening about his childhood to Iris was a very nice scene. Loved their scenes together - so here's hoping for some new habits. ;) :)

Case of the Week - a typical number saving episode with enough twists thrown in that kept us guessing. Liked the return of Zoe and her banter with Reese and Finch. She's also a very intuitive woman in that she figured Reese was interested in another woman.

Fusco not backing down and forcefully asserting his place in the team - very, very nice scene.

The Brotherhood arc returns - were the three Elias' men bumped off or have they turned?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I inferred the same as you did.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The ongoing part of this episode really was character development -
realizing you can't avoid loss, you can't just shut everyone else, hope.

    THIS^^ Completely agree.

Regarding Iris, I don't think that she has fussed out that Reese is a fraud but her comment was more about how Reese wasn't a cop ( on the inside) and in his personality, mannerisms and outlook. But with this show, one can never be sure. She could turn out be bad.

As for a possible start of a relationship between her and Reese, IMHO, I do not find it forced. Two consenting, attractive adults attracted to each other over the course of multiple one-on-one sessions is highly probable.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It? IT? What did that poor boy do to you? Hah? He has even kept Shaw alive? And you call him an 'it'?

    :p ;) :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. There may be an aspect of enjoyment (like disturbed young boys playing with and killing bugs) but Samaritan is also about learning human behavior. So, IMO, it does both. Play and learn.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I didn't expect to enjoy the Reese and Iris scenes so much.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love Root( very much) but I am perfectly okay with not seeing her for some episodes( as @SRJ says - we're kind of used to a lack of her).

OTOH, I miss Shaw terribly. :(

    ReplyDelete
  47. I still disagree.

It's easy to assume that our Machine represents and immolates the personality and belief system of Finch and is a macrocosmic version of him.

So what about Samaritan? Where does it's personality come from?

If we look to the analogy of playing a game like Chess, it's purpose is not only to teach one about the probability of outcomes, but also all games tend to be social in nature as well. It's about having the experience of the pleasure or displeasure of seeing someone else's strategy and reactions to the outcomes.

The problem lies in what we do not know about Decima such as who it's heads are and what it's goals are...All we do know is that Greer is an employee of Decima and Greer is the one who turned Samaritan on and happens to be the one with the most communication with Samaritan, seemingly giving Samaritan orders on behalf of Decima.

So ultimately Greer is the CENTER between these two things, but if we look at Greer's goals and how he handles things, it seems more than likely that Samaritan is currently of his intent and of his personality, because it's creating a world he has envisioned since his brush with his former boss during The Cold War!

Even by wanting to TURN Root to his side (or Decima's side) and seeing what Decima/he did to Kohler and Vigilance, it's easy too see this isn't just about getting to The Queen, but about doing it a certain way for a certain reason--to show someone his capacity--his suffering. After all, once you have eliminated everyone on the board, there will be no one left to control and play with...

The machines are just a macro version of what the show is really about in it's most simplest form: Humanity's capacity to be victims and/or perpetrators and figuring it all out is complicated, because our motivations and emotions are complicated and thus justice is a hard to thing to define.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Does anything ever work out for poor Reese, except for meeting Harold.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I really liked this episode. Loved Fusco standing up to be a part of the team. The only thing I did not like was 3 people as smart as Harold, Reese, and Zoe not being prepared for the contingency that the teacher was going to try to get a guilty verdict. Expect one outcome but prepare for everything.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Bear did not have jury duty so he is home in the tunnels missing Shaw.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I guess someone will have some more messes to clean up, when he gets home.

    ReplyDelete
  52. He is mourning Shaw, no doubt about that. :(

    ReplyDelete
  53. He is a doomed man. Everything he touches turns to blood.... oh wait, this isn't Banshee. ;) :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. I liked seeing Zoe again.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Your clever take on the Banshee quote got me to picturing John, Shaw, and Root visiting with Hood, Kai, and Rebecca in Banshee. And Fusco trying the heck to figure all the characters out.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Wonder if Fusco will ever be brought into the truth about the machines before he goes to that great place in the heavens for redeemed sinners. They never made Carter privy to the whole of what was really going on with the machine pre Samaritan before they bloodied the pavement with her honest blood as I recall.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yep. Totally agree.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The humor in Shaw's deadpan line deliveries is what I 'll miss most till she returns. Plus Fusco's comments to her.

    ReplyDelete
  59. And did Elias 3 guys get bumped off by Dominic or by Elias for turning on him. I think Elias's accountant had orders to find the moles.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It was a good episode. To me, "great" and "awesome" are reserved to the episodes about the bigger arcs, not number of the week cases. This was a nice and needed break from all the heavy Samaritan stuff. It was good.

    ReplyDelete
  61. One word for this episode...Zoe!!!!!!! I always loved the interaction between John and her, and felt that she hit the nail on the head when she told him that people like them don't "do" relationships well. She knows that whoever John is thinking about...his new and lovely therapist....is someone he can never have. I wish we could have more of her character on this show than we've had lately. Maybe with Root absent along with no more Simone, we'll see Zoe off and on again like we used to before.

Nice to see Blair Brown again as the POI this week. It made me sad all over again for Fringe.....:( She did a nice job of character of the week but I would have loved to see her as the bad character as that would have given us some "nasty Nina" instead!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. The fact that Reese was the one who went in for the hug first made that moment even more precious. I just hope Iris won't end up like Andrew on Elementary.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love how bold this show is and how it shakes things up with its amazing storytelling and serialized component and new character. This being said, POI probably does the best procedural episodes on TV and I had been missing them a bit so I really enjoyed this old one thrown at us. It was really nice to see Reese and Harold working together again only with one another and wondering about the POI of the week. Very good episode.
