MOVIES: Spider-Man - Dylan O'Brien And Logan Lerman Being Considered For Lead Role

12 Feb 2015

Sony is looking to a few fresh faces to portray a much younger Spider-Man in their Marvel Studios-sanctioned new take on the character.

A few actors are already being considered to replace the Amazing Spider-Man series' Andrew Garfield, including Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner) and Logan Lerman (the Percy Jackson series, Fury). The studio has reportedly not yet reached out to them. A new director is also needed to replace The Amazing Spider-Man films' Marc Webb, and presumably this new helmer will participate in the casting of the film.

The new Peter Parker will go back to "Spidey’s roots and put the character back in high school," and the web-slinging superhero will now "spend more time in the setting and explore his awkward relationship with other students while fighting crime out of the classroom."

  1. I get that the casting needs to happen since Spider-Man will supposedly be in "Captain America: Civil War", but I don't think they need to sign the director for the solo film just yet.

  2. i would love it if it were Dylan O'Brien but i don't want him to have to give up Teen Wolf so i'm torn because i don't want Teen Wolf to end

  3. Dylan O'Brien would be amazing but I don't want Teen Wolf to lose him. Oh the inhumanity of such a choice!

  4. Just what Spider Man needs, more teen origin stories!

Anyone other than Dylan Obrien cats = them getting none of my $$$

    ReplyDelete
  6. that's what i'm horrified of, you know Teen Wolf would never get rid of him and the only way to not lose him is to lose the show

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yeah Teen Wolf would never survive without him

    ReplyDelete
  8. Stiles as spider-man? YES PLEASE!

    ReplyDelete
  9. by the time filming begins for it, teen wolf will have been past the 7 year life cycle of most long running series.

  10. teen wolf would be over by the time it would start filming civil war/spidey

  11. I would love to see Dylan expand past Teen Wolf. No offence to Teen Wolf I enjoy it a lot but sooner or later it's got to end and it would be amazing if Dylan could start to get more exposure in the movie world beyond The Maze Runner. Sorry but of all the cast of Teen Wolf he is definitely one of the more stand out ones who deserves a career past the show. I hope if this rumour is true he gets it.

  12. No Donald Glover?

  13. If they're going to portray a teenage Peter Parker, perhaps they should consider a teenage actor to play him? I know that probably sounds crazy, but it seems to me that it just might work.

If Dylan gets the role then I see him leaving Teen Wolf once his contract is up (I believe they have a 6 season contract?). He's moving on to movie projects and I doubt he'll want to stay in TV if he can land that big role.

Teen Wolf wont survive without him though (perhaps they can finally launch that Kira spinoff then)

  15. I was very happy with Andrew in the part, but I get why they need a new face for this.
So absolutely on board with either of those two! (though I'm leaning a bit more heavily on Dylan... and yes, I'll admit that's typecasting him on my part, but COME ON!! Stiles with Spidey powers? It's like a match made in heaven!)

Also: Glad they'll be exploring the high school life a bit more.

I believe if they cast a teenager then they're restricted in the hours they can work (unless you mean someone 18/19).

    ReplyDelete
  17. There will be a problem with the hours and the scheduling if they cast an underage actor. That's why they usually cast actors in their twenties for these roles.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Both Logan and Dylan are still in the age group where they are eligible for teenager roles, plus with their babyfaces they can pass for younger without much trouble.
    Granted, borderline, but still...

Yeah I think it works better that they get them while they look young. Then as the actors grow out of their babyface they can have Peter graduate from High School to University.

  20. Are they trying to come up with the hardest way to integrate him into the Avengers? Iron Man dealing with a teenager? What is he going to be all tongue-tied around Black Widow? As if rainbows and capes weren't hard enough, add in high school. Ick.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Exactly. I am done with teen angst.

They'll probably skip his origin story, Marvel mentioned they don't want to do Origin stories anymore.

Hey Marvel...now would be a good time to re-release this gem on blu-ray:

  24. I would die (out of happiness) if Dylan would get the role. I adore that guy. And he is a hell of an actor. Fingers crossed.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can see Dylan as Spider-Man.

    ReplyDelete
  26. So no Miles Morales?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Being a couple of years older than the character is better than being closer to 10 years older.

    ReplyDelete
  28. They should definitely get an 18-19 year-old, then.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That doesn't really seem like a reason not to do it, the Avengers don't exactly get along easily together.

    ReplyDelete
  30. but Teen Wolf's a hit there's no way MTV would let go a hit like that

    ReplyDelete
  31. i thought they weren't giving another origin story so this is confusing

    ReplyDelete
  32. i don't want glorify him but he definitely has the physique

    ReplyDelete
  33. really? you like teenage Peter Parker and not adult Peter Parker?

    ReplyDelete
  34. that surprised me actually, a teenage superhero with adult superheroes is definitely strange

    ReplyDelete
  35. if the season of Dark Stiles is any proof he can definitely handle drama

    ReplyDelete
  36. Was Logan the main guy for The Percy Jackson movies? B/c if so, I don't need to look him up. But idk, who Dylan is.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love Dylan's acting but i don't see him as spiderman. No clue about the other guy.The way the synopsis is sounding,it's better to drop this franchise once and for all.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yep Logan was Percy and not sure if you were joking about Dylan O'Brien? but he is Styles in Teenwolf. IMO Dylan would be a perfect Peter Parker.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yep agree, He was also pretty good in The Internship and the Maze Runner

He was the 2nd Spider-Man in the Ultimate Universe. He's pretty controversial with some feeling that Marvel was going for media headlines with a publicity stunt. Others felt that he was a positive change for the Spider-Man franchise. With a different take on things, he breathed new life into the franchise.

Their was some theory that Marvel may go for Miles instead of Peter to change things up, but since they're looking at white actors they must be going for Peter.

  41. Civil War stars filming in 2 months

    ReplyDelete
  42. Please god not Dylan :(

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thank you I hated 4 the amazing spiderman franchise but I liked the other spiderman movies although I'm not sure about the casting?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ok good. (About Logan being Percy)...no not joking, I don't watch TW. but i hear Styles' name thrown around often, apparently he's some sort of big deal. I'll look his face up later.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Civil War starts filming in about two months, since it comes out May next year. Teen Wolf won't be over by then.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I thought I've read somewhere that they could have introduced him in post credits scene of Civil War with him getting bitten by a spider. Fast forward and you could have a Spider-Man movie without explaining his origins..

    ReplyDelete
  47. Isn't Dylan busy with Teen Wolf and the Maze movies?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I would've love to see an older spiderman about teh age of the avengers but if they want to keep it High school lvls then both are great actors. Im going for Logan cause i know more of his work than Dylan's

    ReplyDelete
  49. They look wayyy to young. All of the other avengers look twice their age.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't mind adult Peter.

But the whole teenager trying to balance school and a superhero life is what I've always found appealing about Peter and the Spidey mythos.

    ReplyDelete
  51. my bad, considering the copious amount of marvel movies coming out by 2020 i got a few titles mixed. However, when he filmed Maze Runner, he did it after his scenes for teen wolf were done, Im sure he could figure out the logistics if he wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Some of them are, not all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  53. dylan obrien and logan l are awesome actors, its just... they aren't spider man.

    ReplyDelete
  54. If they don't want to drop the franchise, can we at least drop Peter Parker? There's a perfectly good Spider-Man in Miles Morales.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I mean, nearly 100% of Miles' arc is his inherited legacy. Without that, he has no identity, no character, and almost no good storylines to adapt. His one virtue is that he isn't white.

I think they can do Miles in like, Phase 6 or something when the actor they cast here departs, but you have to start with Peter.

    ReplyDelete
  56. If they tried, they could remove Peter completely and start with Miles as the One and Only Spider-Man. But if that's too complicated, consider this: Spider-Gwen.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think the greater Marvel universe and it's canon is more important than making a casting decision solely to appease the notion of a more progressive world-view in film. Both can be achieved, I think, by considering non-white actors for the role of Peter Parker.

You're probably not wrong that they can simply use Peter's backstory and arc for Miles (I expect DC to use Hal Jordan's for John Stewart, so it's probably not unprecedented), but you need to think about the long haul.

The Marvel universe will last longer than any of the actors. They need to replace people. Miles can be done in time, properly, with his full arc in place after they run Peter Parker.
