The Vampire Diaries - Woke up with a Monster - Review

And we're back!  Season 6B kicked off with Kai kidnapping and torturing a resiliently feisty Elena while Damon rushed to the rescue.  Meanwhile, Jo, Liv, and Luke continued to grapple with pre-merge drama and Caroline made a deceptive discovery in her attempt to save her mom's life.  Enzo continued his vendetta against Stefan in a more subtle vein (not that that's saying much) and we met the real Sarah Salvatore as well.  Overall, an action-packed episode with some strange and intriguing developments - let's discuss!

"I've never felt more alive."  Kai decided to work on controlling his overwhelming new magic by attacking Elena in all kinds of ways and letting loose a stream of often twistedly hilarious one-liners (the opening scene with the poor owner of the Mystic Grill cloaked on the table was especially generous in its Kai humor).  But once transferred to Mystic Falls High, Elena was able to break free long enough to call Damon, who headed on over with Jo (who's struggling with regaining her magical skills) and hunter Jeremy in tow.  Jo had to work incredibly hard to maintain the cloaking spell necessary to facilitate their escape, and eventually Kai got the upper hand, even pulling an especially wicked trick by fooling Damon into staking him..only to reveal that it was actually Elena that Damon attacked.  Unfortunately for Kai, though, Team Damon had the ultimate element of surprise in store: the ever-unpredictable twist of Jeremy actually doing something useful.  Now the gang have Kai subdued, but how long can that last?
As Damon tended to Elena's wounds, the pair shared a scene that left me with mixed feelings about the writing.  Elena pretended to have a shard of wood still lodged in her heart and choked out that if Damon needed to tell her anything, now was the time, sending him into a frenzy of worry.  But as it turned out, Elena was...just kidding.  That seemed like a really bizarre and mean "joke," but on the other hand, the interaction between them that followed was so adorable and sweet that it made up for it.  Ian Somerhalder did an especially terrific job with Damon's shocked relief and warm affection towards Elena here, and it's great to see this couple being drawn ever closer back together. However, as Damon pointed out later in the episode, "Oooh, you know I don't know. Every time we try and go on a date you get kidnapped, I get sent to a prison world, or your feelings get compelled away," so let's hope that Elena can keep her promise for that dinner date.

Caroline and Liz had some difficult scenes this week, with Caroline's panic at the prospect of losing her mother combining with Liz's quiet bravery in a heartbreaking way.  I'm glad that Stefan went with Caroline on her trip to consult with the specialist at Duke, which also gave him a chance to check on Real Sarah (and lead Enzo right to her...wow, no one saw that coming).  However, I wish Stefan could have kept closer by Caroline and perhaps advised her to stick around and keep an eye on that cancer patient she fed her blood to for a longer time before deciding that he was definitively cured.  The desperation Caroline felt to grasp a solution to Liz's illness was such that it caused her to cling to this fragile chance too eagerly.  As we might have suspected, it's not that easy to cure cancer, or it would be more widely known in the vampire community.  So Caroline's test patient was back at the hospital in dire condition, suggesting that his demise has only been expedited...leading to what - outright death or vampirism?  In any case, it was hard not to yell at Caroline to stop when she was handing Liz that teacup.

Caroline and Stefan had a really lovely scene this week, with her thanking him for his support and his clear reminder that he'll always provide it, implicit with a particularly profound hand-holding moment.  Sure, it looked like he intended to kiss her for a moment there, but the hand-holding turned out to be very poignant and perfect for the moment.

It was quietly nice to see some of the other characters showing their affection and support for Liz in this episode, from Damon to Stefan, and even Matt (though he wasted some of the time whining about how Mystic Falls is full of supernatural danger...wow, really?  Since when, Matty?!).  Liz's situation bodes very badly, and it will be sad to see how her possible death will effect those who care for her.

"The best revenge is patient, cultivated. Nobody sees it coming until it's too late."  Does anyone else get the feeling that Enzo is simply expressing the writer's inclination to procrastinate until they finally think of something interesting to do with his character this season?  It's a sad state of affairs when a sparky, formerly entertaining character like Enzo is given nothing to do except follow Stefan around making vague threats.  I am, however, looking forward to seeing where the storyline between Enzo and Sarah will go, and whether he may hesitate on doing her harm once he gets to know her.  After being inundated with reminders of Enzo's bad qualities, it would be truly nice to see that little glimmer of his potential for good once again.
Elsewhere in the episode...Liv told Luke that she's figured out he is stronger than her and will likely defeat her if they merge.  Her palpable fear for her own life was enough to give Luke pause in his plan to head home to dear old dad, but can they truly avoid the merge?

Late in the episode, Damon and Alaric shared what might have been their most adorable bromance moment so far this season.  I loved their agreement on the delights of being with a woman who does crazy things, and seeing Damon and Alaric bond over a drink again instead of fighting was a big relief.  Despite Jo's hard work to strengthen her magic, it does seem like she's ill-equipped to face Kai, though I'd love to see her come out on top.   Jodi Lyn O'Keefe is great at showing Jo's bravery, vulnerability, and slight wackiness, and she's a charming character overall.

The biggest missing piece in this episode was definitely Bonnie.  We need her back in Mystic Falls stat, not least of all because she's the badass who could be the defining opponent to help take down Kai.

  1. Brilliant direction by paul wesley!
    This episode was so well-written
    & acted,i was really surprised.I liked all the scenes-especially
    those between dalaric,even delena,wonder twins & kai-elena
    conversation.Kai is a fantastic villain,probably the best they've
    brought on this show after kat & klaus.Although i don't like enzo's
stalker-ish behaviour,i have to say i want to see what is the plan here
in the long-term.The caroline-liz moments were so well portrayed &
    emotional.That final 2 mins was really gut-wrenching &
    heartbreaking!
Can't wait for the next episode-The merger event is happening!!
My prediction next week-Kai and luke will merge & luke will bite the dust.

Well, I certainly agree with you on the first part...and I think I'm increasingly in the minority on wanting to see more of Enzo!

  4. I loved watching Kai torture Elena and screw with her and Damon.

I really was not behind Caroline at all. She didn't even stay and monitor the guy - she waited like 10 minutes and then just left. She should have at least waited like a week or something just to see if it really did work or not. She really wouldn't have been waiting very long before the guy died and became a vampire though since that happened HOURS later.

I hate how everything is always "let's save Elena" and they forget about other characters like Bonnie. Elena was planning a date with Damon at the end instead of planning to try and save Bonnie.

I don't get why Caroline didn't ask Enzo - the vampire who was experimented on and only talked to Stefan & Damon. I also don't get why Caroline didn't think to look at the Augustine research to see if there was anything in there that would have helped her because they probably already experimented with all that.

If they won't give Enzo anything to do other than be Stefan's creepy stalker they need to get rid of him.

  5. I absolutely love Enzo and want to see more of him but not a single scenario is coming up in my mind where he ends up surviving by the time season closes. He's too far gone & damaged!

  7. Elena's character has become so whiny and self-centered,i sometimes can't even believe this is the same character i fell in love with in the first 2 seasons!!

  8. Pretty much everything i said last night. So with that, great review. lol I really had no complaints. Only that Enzo is still around yapping about destroying Stefan's life. (rolls eyes) I would love Kai to come face to face with Enzo. With Kai's humor and tough attitude, he'd sure have some words for him. LOL Omg i would love that.

I can't get over how sweet and natural Steroline was last night. All their scenes were so good. I really have to give Paul and Candice credit as actors, b/c i feel like they're getting better and better, they play great off each other, and i can really feel they are just digging their new dynamic and having so much fun doing it. Most times i feel like Caroline brings out the Paul in Stefan. Especially when they have moments like that. They're so healthy for each other, it's so refreshing. I'm going to agree with Paul and say...they really are a duo now. And i enjoy every minute of it. But (touches chest) the way Stefan caressed her hand with BOTH of his hands, just to reassure her and calm her down! Double swoon! These two will kill me. It was perfect. I didn't want anything else but that. But yes i did fall victim to (which doesn't happen often) the heart stopping, eye popping, omg is he going to kiss her moment. However, i was relieved it didn't happen.

Delena...also very sweet and natural last night. They weren't over the top. They felt so fresh last night. The looks, the smiles, it was all really subtle last night. The joke Elena played was mean, but the fact that Damon took it so lightly, and just smiled, and Elena laughing the way she did. I couldn't even get mad. The "I never felt more alive" really helped too, with the season 4 parallel. And, FTR, i still feel that she'll get her memories back once they kiss. It's driving me crazy, i can't let it go.

Damon and Liz-- Absolutely loved their scene. Damon sleeping in the chair cracked me up. But their banter mixed with Damon's signature smile, and wink, complete with his "feel better." Awww. I cherish their relationship. And i've been waiting to see their scene since Liz was diagnosed. I hope to get more of it during the episodes ahead.

Bonnie was, in general, too ignored in this episode. Totally agree on that!

  11. You're welcome. And thank you. Yesss, she really needs them back. If this theory is right. (Even though the moment will be sad b/c they'll be in the hospital. = /) I WILL be cheering!!!

  12. And the worst part is bonnie and jeremy won't even get to say goodbye to each other coz bonnie will be absent on 6.14,which is jeremy's last episode on the show!Go figure! These damn writers!

I agree that Caroline's actions shouldn't be judged too harshly. Even though I knew it was going to go horribly wrong, her total desperation is understandable.

  14. While everyone else in every other message board were annoyed by Delena in every episode every single week, I happen to like this particular episode and just about every other ones this season, seems like a strong comeback from last season's Traveler-downer.

Kai has been the best villain the show has had in a long time since Klaus. While it will be a little sad to see him go, I think we can all agree he brought something good to the table by being such a twisty-twisted douchebag that actor Chris Wood has managed to deliver to us.

I believe Enzo's current storyline is one of those backburner stories that requires patience before it can be front and center. It could be frustrating as it seems like Enzo's just then and there, but I have to keep an open mind that a big story is coming up for him in the latter part of Season 6.

    Crossing shining fingers!

Great points, James! I've really been enjoying Delena (as usual) and the season overall. Kai is indeed a strong villain, and I'll keep hoping Enzo's story is going somewhere rewarding.

  18. yeah i was surprised he died like that and damn is that hospital empty poor guy, part of me hated Caroline for that but i get it

  19. i don't think anyone can beat Kai in villainess though i feel like he raised the bar, that any villain after him won't be able to be as great as him, Chris Wood is a great actor

I think Klaus will always be my fave TVD villain, but Kai is awesome...we really needed a good villain this season and he fits the bill!

Yeah, why were there no doctors or nurses around? Creepy scene!

  22. I know!So frustrating!

  23. I was thinking about Kai yesterday. (Lol yes that might sound weird) and I think he's better than Klaus. They ruined Klaus once they started giving him "feelings" towards Caroline. Completely ruined him. (Well not completely but that diminished his evil persona). Kai is Klaus from the books (and from the end of s2 when Klaus comes on), this ruthless, careless, manical, SOB. The way tv Klaus should've been. And that's what makes Kai better...he's very unpredictable. (amongst other things).

  24. I was more distracted by the fact they didn't have any hallways lights on. Lol hospitals always have the lights on. That's what I found odd. Not the lack of help, that's always expected in this genre. It's one of those questions, that should never be asked, you just accept it and roll with it. Lol

Lol, true, one must fend for oneself in this genre!

  26. I was thinking about that too!! Kai is slowely becoming my fave TVD villain and I think he is better than Klaus too

  27. Yesss! I found someone who agrees. lol Awesome. I just put his quotes down on the Quotes Of The Week Thread. lol...i swear easily my favorite this week. Can't wait to hear what he says next. He's hilarious. lol
