The Originals - Brotherhood of the Damned - Review

31 Jan 2015

This week’s episode again an episode where not much went down. Rebekah was nowhere to be seen. Finn attempted to uncover secrets of both Klaus and Elijah, and failed. Hayley and Jackson started the wedding preparations. Marcel seemed to be the main focus of this episode. He was forced to suffer through the effects of a werewolf bite and we saw flashbacks of his time fighting in WWI.

Biggest mistake: It’s no secret that I’m not excited that Hayley and Jackson are getting married. But I think her participating in this ritual is a big mistake. I trust that Hayley wouldn’t willingly give up her secret. But I don’t trust Jackson or his grandmother (something about her rubs me the wrong way). Hayley doesn’t know what that herb she and Jackson have to take will do. I get that there should be honesty between people who are about to get married but that doesn’t mean all secrets need to be revealed. Especially not ones that if revealed, puts peoples live in danger.
Best scene: Finn thought he was in control this week and could not have been more wrong. He’s been absent from the family for so long, he no longer knows his siblings. He got all his information from his mother, which proves that even though she was supposedly watching her children on the other side, she doesn’t know them at all. Finn thought Klaus was still the same person he was centuries ago, that he wouldn’t be able to forgive Elijah. Even 3 years ago, this might have been true. But Klaus has grown a lot these past years, and while taken aback at first, had no problem forgiving his brother. Elijah and Klaus are both not the same people they were a few years ago, and because of that were able to free themselves from Finn’s spell.

Missing piece: When Marcel first started hallucinating we saw one of his friends during the war, seemingly dying. So I presumed that by the conclusion to this episode, we would find out how his friends died. We did not. Marcel returned from the war alone, which makes me wonder: what happened to them. Marcel wouldn’t just turn them and let them go back to their families like that, would he? Also, I get that as vampires they were indestructible soldiers at night. But what about during the day. I doubt there just happened to be a witch close by who knew how to make daylight rings. So did they just hide the entire day? These are things that I felt needed more clarification.
Biggest disappointment: Am I the only one who found it weird that Davina’s sole focus this week seemed to be Kol. Not Marcel, who she loves like a brother. Not Josh, her best friend. But Kol, a guy she hasn’t known that long, lied to her about his identity, and has made some questionably moves lately. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against Kol (except for what he did to Rebekah) or Davina and Kol as a couple. But I just found it weird that she didn’t seem to care all that much about Marcel and Josh.

Best teamwork: I did like the scene where Marcel and his vampires braved the crowd. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t think they’d listen. But surprisingly they all pulled together and made it to Marcel’s place.

General opinion: As you can probably tell by this review, I did not like this episode very much. Which is probably why I dreaded writing this review in the first place. The pace in this episode and the last one seems very slow. I can only assume this means that the writers are trying to build up to something else (or at least I hope so). I didn’t feel this way at first after I saw the episode, but the more time I had to think about it, the more negatively I started thinking of it. Hopefully next week will be better.
Best quotes: Klaus: “Hate the war, love the hats.”
Davina: “The one time I need you.”
Klaus: “I’m fine. Thank you for your concern.”

That’s it for this week. I hope I didn’t step on anyone’s toes, this is just my opinion. Check in again next week for a new (and hopefully more positive) review. Let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.

The first negative review I've ever written. Not something I feel particulary good about.

  2. Even I found it boring to read it. I always read your reviews and they're so good, because you can tell how the show makes you happy as a fan. But lately the show has really started to annoy me. Some of the directions they're going seem to come out of nowhere. The Marcel and Gia thing, wasn't he with Cami. And like you said Davina's entire focus being Kol, it seems to be the stereotypical thing where a teen girl just falls magically in love with a guy she barely met and basically lied to her. Although, Finn not knowing how much the bond of the Mikaelson siblings had grown makes sense since he was daggers for 900 years. And no Rebekah and Freya in this episode seems annoying because the majority of the fans were looking forward to that storyline that seems fresh and intriguing.

  3. I feel like Devina only was worried about Kol because from what she knew, Marcel and Josh weren't actually in danger. Sure, they were hungry but Kol was the only one in imminent danger. Would love more scenes with her and Josh though.

Marcel's vampire army buddies was very well done thematically, but the storyline did not really engage me in any way. I found it was boring and couldn't wait for it to be over. The guy he was hallucinating just didn't ever grab my interest. It was such a minor part but I feel like the acting just wasn't there.

Loving grandma wolf though. After Scandal, I will never think she doesn't have some kind of hidden agenda but wow her voice just brings so many of her characters to life since it is different from the usual voices you'd expect on the Originals. It is very much a country voice in a show that even people in the swamp sound like they were born and raised in a city. Really makes her feel like a traditional, take charge, we do things me way kinda lady.

  4. I'm not trying to offend here but.. This is the only negative review I have read on this episode. Also I'm not sure you actually watched it from this review. You seem to have missed a few key points here that made this episode what it was. I feel your review was rushed and not in the least bit thought out. They didn't show Marcel return from war, so how do you know he returned alone? Also they all died, he brought them back to fight the last fight. There was no mention of anything after that and it was assumed there was nothing after that. So I'm pretty sure rings weren't needed.

Finn never stated he got his info from his mother on his brothers, he said he knew them because they didn't change since they were together. He said nothing of Ester. Klaus broke the spell not Elijah. Elijah is the same person as he always was, Klaus is not. The one thing I do agree on is that Davina seemed off on only caring about Kol. However even in her defense, Marcel and Josh were safe in the house, Kol was not. She didn't know of Finn's plan until Klaus woke up and he rushed her out.

Again, I'm sorry if I offend you in anyway, I just don't feel this was a review of someone who actually watched and concentrated on what they were watching. I have read your reviews in the past and you are good, this one I feel wasn't. Sorry.

  5. They've mentioned several times this season how Finn has been listening to his mother's opinions on them all and how she was right about all of them. It just wasn't in this episode.

I think she is inferring the soldier thing because none of them have appeared and he hallucinated him in the army uniforms spitting up blood, which infers last time he saw him he was wearing the uniform. You see things that make you feel guilty or horrified while bitten by a werewolf, stuff that makes you act out in a crazy way.

  6. I agree with you on the Davina thing, the writers really have trouble to write an appropiote story for her. I know she doesn't got anyone but still Kol isn't someome she needs in her life. I remember tgat Raina revelase mentioned a sister coming up for D but seems that the casting callbwas for either Bekah's new self or Freya's image.
The rest of the episode I found quite solid with exception of Marcel and his Vamps walking through the town.
Yes they are quite building up a story and their press releasses are getting more tricky than ever. I'm justvglad that we get Bekah back next week.

  7. I agree with you I cant stand this wedding storyline and I don't like Jackson and Haley together and maybe its just me and because I am on the opposite ship. And I was happy that Klaus forgave Elijah how many times has Elijah forgave Klaus. I don't think that Elijah is a monster and I do agree Klaus broke the spell. I loved the scene with Elijah and Klaus. I like the friendship between Elijah and Cam but I miss my ship. I liked the scene between Klaus and Davina that would be funny down the line became closer even though I like Klaus and Cami and I for one like Gia and Marcel.

I spent as much time writing this review as my others but I guess my heart just wasn't in it this week. I've never had to write one for an episode I didn't like before, and I guess the format I usually use doesn't really work here. I do appreciate your feedback, this is someting I need to work on.

They showed Marcel's return in a flashback the previous season, I was referring to that. And I just assumed that Finn got most of his information on his siblings from his mother, seeing as aside from Kol, she's the one he's had the most contact with (before coming out of the shadows).

  13. I am not sure how it will end But I cant wait until it ends. I don't know I have a feeling that the wedding will happen I wonder if Elijah will be there, I don't know if he would be there it might be to painful. I still think Jackson is up to no good I cant stand them together. And I miss Klaus and Cami scenes I loved when they dance. I like Cami and Elijah as friends. And I miss Elijah and Haley and she has not told him that she loved hm. And what happened to the bath salts and barry white that Daniel Gillies mentioned. I am not a Klaus and Haley fan but I want Klaus to punch Jackson.

  14. that dance My God i completely without a doubt thought they would kiss, yeah i don't trust Stalker Wolf he acts all romantic and stuff but the truth of the matter is that he STALKED her, no matter what anyone says. What bath salts and Barry White stuff? LOL

  15. I am so glad someone agrees with me. I hope Haley and Elijah are the Delena of the Originals. On an interview they asked him about romance with Haley and he said bath salt, barry White and Candlelight. I hate this whole wedding thing everytime I see that I want to fast forward but I don't. I want more Elijah and less Jackson and I want Klaus to punch him out
