MOVIES: Star Wars - Is Marvel Possibly Going For A World Record?

6 Jan 2015

With Marvels relaunch of the Star Wars comic set to release next week, BleedingCool has reported that the relaunch will include over 100 covers. Potentially, Marvel could be going for a world record with the most number of variant covers. Last month, ComicBook.com also reported that over 1 million copies of the comic were set to sell. The last mainstream comic to do similar numbers was back in 1993 for Batman #500.

Some of these variant covers can be viewed here:

Thanks to BleedingCool for collecting so many of the variant covers.

These covers are lacking in Jar Jar Binks.
    Allow me to remedy that.

  2. Wow, just for one series, because I thought they were launching a few? I know I am trying to buy some of the now non-cannon "Legacy" Dark Horse ones, because most will not be reprinted...

    They're launching 4 so far.

    Star Wars in January.
    Darth Vader in February.
    Princess Leia in March.
    Kanan in April.

Darth Vader I believe has like 5 variant covers confirmed so far, the rest don't have any yet.

  5. Can someone explain to me what's the deal with variant covers? Is it the same comic with just a different cover? Or is it something else?

Same comic with a different cover.

They do it for various reasons but generally it's to encourage collectors to buy multiple copies of the same issue. Sometimes variants are store specific (encouraging stores that work with the publishers to sell more), other times they do it to convince stores to order more copies (eg for every 50 of the standard version they'll include variant x)

You can find a list of the current known variants for this Star Wars comic here: http://jedinews.co.uk/news/news.aspx?newsID=19756

From what I've heard, the sales relate a lot to the various mystery gift type services.
The main one (LootCrate) bought a little over a quarter of a million just for their subscribers.
