Previously on Justified: Boyd robbed another bank, New guy tried to get Raylan to sell Arlo’s house Boyd offered Ava the chance to come away with him, Dewey Crowe was unceremoniously offed, Ava’s further out of the loop than Raylan would like her to be as a CI.

"I'll go wherever you want to go, Ava..."

This week’s episode opens with Ava (Joelle Carter) sits in her kitchen. Hearing a noise outside, she goes to her shed to find Boyd (Walton Goggins) poking around. He’s less than happy that she’s now pointing a gun at his face. After confronting him, she asks where he wanted to go last episode. He tells her he’d go anywhere with her as long as he’s with her. Even Iceland. And with that, Boyd leaves just as suddenly as he dropped by. Ava checks into what he’s been poking around and finds a file. She stuffs the things into the large envelope they had been sitting on top of.

Tim (Jacob Pitts) and Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) are discussing what they think the bank manager might be able to give them in regards to the Boyd case and Raylan’s baby girl, whom Raylan is watching via video feed. Rachel (Erica Tazel) informs them that their new witness is not so much on Boyd’s side as scared shitless of him, either way; she doesn’t provide much useful information to them. Raylan is certain Ava will help them in the long run, but Vasquez (Rick Gomez) is less sure of this fact.

Walker (Garret Dillahunt) goes to talk to another one of the locals. She’s suspicious of him and his Mercedes. He offers her and her husband the chance to “depart their troublesome homestead” and she notes that he really does sound like the devil then. Neither one of the locals intend to sell to this new man as it’s a legacy property. Bet he’s been hearing that a lot around those parts. He’s more than a little offended when they call him a peacock, probably not been hearing much of that around those parts.

“Have a little faith.”

Katherine Hale (Mary Steenburgen) is not happy about Boyd’s haul. Boyd wants to know what to tell his cohorts. She insists the money is there. Hale asks over Ava. Boyd tells her that’s one of the few topics that is off the table for discussion. Duffy (Jere Burns) then informs Katherine that they cannot gang up on Boyd, claiming to know how to handle the hillbilly. So folly causes Duffy’s downfall then?

Raylan meets with a new realtor. Real shame he couldn’t use Gary as his realtor, but I suppose that ship has long since sailed. Raylan tells the new house seller that why they’re there is not to sell Arlo’s property. The guy, Calhoun (Brad Leland), still offers to charge them a 0% commission if he does not sell the house within 30 days. Raylan is a little impressed and a few seconds later is properly introduced to Ty Walker. Raylan informs Calhoun that they’re actually there to talk about his safe deposit box. Calhoun had taken all of his important paperwork out a few days earlier. Walker notes that Tim is kind of a dick after the marshals repeatedly shut him out of the conversation.

After the marshals leave, Walker has one of his guys follow them. Calhoun claims to not know why he would have bee the target of the robbery. And now those two are planning a murder of their own. Well who isn’t on this show?

"You just about hit me and now you’re slinging foul utterances in my direction?"

Tim informs Raylan that Willow should start walking at 9-10 months and wonders if Raylan’s worried about her development. Raylan replies that he just doesn’t want to miss it. Tim suggests a few ways to screw with the guy following them. Raylan has Tim get ahead of the guy (Choo Choo). Raylan stands in the middle of the road, nearly gets hit by the car, and gets a less than repeatable phrase thrown in his direction. After a circuitous discussion, Raylan takes Choo Choo’s car.

Katherine’s off charming Sam Elliott’s Markham. They shoot the shit over some champagne and weed. She reminds him that she’s a grandmother. Katherine tells him she’s worried that “an employee” is stealing from her. Markham tells her that what he does to keep his people loyal is give them lots of bonuses. She notes it must be hard to turn a profit doing that. He suggests removing both eyes of the employee instead, if she doesn’t want to give bonuses.

Walker is not happy that Choo Choo’s lost his car. After hanging up, he smashes Calhoun’s office and asks for the bank manager’s name. Calhoun gets a call from Boyd. Boyd tells him that he found his ledger and real estate contracts on the side of the road. Calhoun arranges to meet with Boyd at his office around 8. Boyd tells him he’s expecting a lot of money. Walker hounds him again over the manager’s name. Joyce Kipling is the name Calhoun comes up with.

Choo Choo tries his hand at hitchhiking until Tim comes back around picking him up.

“Get me something, Ava. Risk your life and then put ‘em back.”

Ava gives Raylan the things she found while Boyd was banging around in her shed. Raylan is less impressed than Ava was expecting. She tells him the documents weren’t that hard to find and asks if she’s been set up. Raylan asks how close they are these days and if Boyd has any reason to suspect her. Ava says she wouldn’t have thought so a few minutes ago. Raylan tells her to put the documents back.

Choo Choo tells his cohorts that the marshals stole his car and that Tim was in the war at the same time they were. Choo Choo claims the only reason he didn’t kill Raylan is cos of the string of bodies it would cause. Choo Choo’s friends kick Tim out of the meeting.

Raylan interrupts Calhoun seeking comfort in the company of an escort. The hooker says he should just tell the marshal what’s up. She tells Raylan all about the ledger and the notes Calhoun has been taking over his partnership with Walker. Raylan pins the blackmailer as Boyd immediately.

Ava arrives home to see Boyd sitting on her front step. Boyd tells her they need to talk. Ava says she was cleaning up the shed when she found “that shit you stashed.” Ava claims she was worried about being sent back to prison. He asks her where they are now and she tells him the papers are in the truck on the seat to take them and get off her property.

“Jesus Boyd, I was just saying hello.”

Raylan and Boyd have a quick discussion about what brings both of them there before Boyd offers to make an offer on Arlo’s place. Raylan asks if he’s planning on robbing a bank with First River being robbed yesterday. Raylan then asks why Boyd’s there. Boyd claims he’s just returning some found things to Calhoun. Raylan offers to take them off his hands and Boyd hands them over. “I’d say see you around, but it don’t sound like you will be for very long.” Boyd asks if fatherhood has changed Raylan. Raylan replies that they’ll have to see. Personally, I’d doubt it, but he is watching little Willow online so perhaps the change has not been insignificant.

Walker goes to help the bank manager unload her car and to inquire over the contents of his box that was stolen. He asks her for what the police shared with her and offers to make her an omelet. She tells him the few things she does know, including the fact they’re looking into Boyd. He asks for a rain check on the omelet and leaves.

"Either we’re together, or we’re not. Either I’m part of what you’re doing, or I’m not."

Boyd’s sitting in his office. Ava comes over to the bar. One of the new henchmen goes to the back to check that it’s okay she’s there and Ava takes off her jacket to reveal her low cut top underneath. Boyd tells the guy that his fiancĂ© does not need to be announced. Ava says it’s the first time he’s called her that since she got out of jail. He says “that’s still true, isn’t it?” Ava replies that she doesn’t like the way they left things. “You can hide gold bricks from Fort Knox under my bed for all I care.” Boyd sounds pleased with that result, but wants to get her out of his office claiming to be tired. Ava informs him that one of the land deeds he found was not like the other because one of those deeds was to Pizza Portal. The building used to be a bank. Once the realization strikes him as to what she said, he kisses her and gets a bottle of the good bourbon.

Raylan goes to the Pizza Place to find the Walker crew. He asks them what they’re up to and they claim it’s ‘cause of the bright future Harlan has. Raylan doesn’t buy that excuse, but says that if they want his land, he wants to speak to the head of the operation.

Next Tuesday: Raylan’s gonna swoop in on his white horse.

My thoughts:

I can’t really say I have any strong feelings one way or the other on this episode. I do think it’s interesting that the show is devoting so much time to new characters considering how close it is to the end of the series. Personally, I’m not overly invested in any of the new characters so far, but the reactions over on twitter and tumblr seem to be positive about them. Of course, historically, I’ve thought the second episode of the season has been one of the weaker ones. Blame the fatalist in me, I was meaning to get that exorcised between seasons....

Body Count: Still just Dewey.
