Happyland - Cancelled by MTV

8 Jan 2015

Happyland will not be returning to MTV as the cable network has quietly opted not to renew the hourlong series for a second season. Happyland, which debuted in late September, was a departure for the young-skewing net as it was a light, one-hour dramedy. MTV did an experiment, expanding its Tuesday comedy block to two hours, with Happyland at 11 PM following half-hour comedies Awkward and Faking It.

It didn't quite work, with Happyland averaging paltry 0.2 rating in adults 18-49 and 370,000 total viewers in the first hour of late-night despite the ratings strength of MTV’s 10-11 PM comedies, especially Happyland‘s lead-in, breakout hit Faking It.

  1. It was expected, but did they really think people would tune in at 11?

Expected. They sat on the show for like 2 years before finally burning it off late at night.

  3. It sucks but I already thought they announced that it was cancelled.

  4. So dumb. I don't know why they thought anybody would watch given A) the 11:00 time slot, B) the lower lead-in (Awkward managed to break out at 11:00 with the help of a much higher lead-in), and C) the terrible promotion, both in terms of volume and content. It was a cute show that deserved a lot more than it got.

  5. No surprise here.

  6. I'm sad it didn't work out. I really liked the show and I loved the cast and themepark setting.

Also, the cast was adorable. I hope they pop up on other MTV shows or other channels soon!

  7. That is a little deceptive though because Faking it season 1 premiered in April and season 2 premiered at the end of September. You are correct that MTV clearly did not believe in the show because they would have aired Happyland after the second half of Awkward's season instead they went with Faking it again.

  8. MTV did a great job promoting Faking it, Finding Carter, and now Eye Candy, it seems likely based on the timeslot, they did not believe in Happyland, thus the more limited promotion and lack of effort in terms of content. Though in some cases the content of certain shows are just easier to promote.

  9. Wut? They cancelled a show they picked up in october '13 and waited almost a year to air it?

I didn't watch it but certainly not unexpected as a cancellation. Especially since one could easily expect the show to have wrapped shooting at least 6-7 months ago and the actors already having fallen out of their characters.

Yeah. It seems like MTV picked it up but then decided pretty late they weren't interested. Production of the first season was probably already completed though so they just burned it off as a late-night filler.

  12. I'm actually confused why there're not more simple burn off/time filler shows these days. Only intended to bridge time to high-level TV:
These days every show seems pressed to be "more" than just timefiller

Knight Rider was nothing more than that. Only ordered to series to be cannon food and it became a success in its own right.
