Arrow - Season 3 - Katie Cassidy Discusses What to Expect of Laurel as Black Canary

14 Jan 2015

IGN TV: So let's dive right into the suit.

Katie Cassidy: The suit!

IGN: How has felt for you after all this time to finally be suiting up and diving into this aspect of the character?

Cassidy: Honestly, it's everything I've ever wanted. I waited a long time to get to this place. I'm just so grateful and so happy. The writers have been so good to me. It was a long time coming, but I think it was well worth the wait. As with every superhero, you have to earn it. You can't have a character turn into a superhero over night. So Laurel had to hit her rock bottom before she came out on top. Yes, on January 21st you'll see me in the costume, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm good -- yet. She's still learning, still training. She still has a long way to go. But she's driven, and she's fearless. Seeking vengeance for her sister is what's moving her.

IGN: Can you talk about what she's going to take from Sara and what she's going to bring to Canary as just Laurel?

Cassidy: In Season 3, you'll see Laurel go from avenging her sister to honoring her sister to then becoming her. But I think, A) The suit is not the same, but it's definitely similar; the jacket is almost identical, and B) She's doing this for her sister. Part of what she brings to it is heart. She's fearless, she's driven, she's doing this because, deep inside, it's what she believes in and what she wants. I'm not necessarily sure that Sara -- you'd have to ask Caity Lotz, because it's a character choice -- but that's where she was coming from. She sort of fell into it mistakenly, because of the crash in Season 1. Being on the island, she had no choice. Laurel has a choice, and she's choosing this because she's that strong and realistic, and has heart about it.

  1. I'm so ready for this!!! She is a bit pushing with the avenging/honoring her sister stuff, but think its cause she can't tell to much so she throws that in to deflect.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I wish she wouldnt have said becoming her sister.

    ReplyDelete
  3. And the fighting begins in 3,2,1....

    ReplyDelete
  4. Really impressed with KAtie Cassidy's dedication to the role

IGN: How has the training been for you? In that boxing scene, you can really see the work.

Cassidy: Yeah. It was pretty intense. It's all about what you put into it. Me as an actor, I want to be as authentic as possible. I didn't want to just be like, "Okay, they're making me train with a trainer three or four times a week." I was like, "I'm going to bust my ass!" I actually ended up with three different trainers. I had a boxing trainer -- a fighting trainer -- then a weightlifting trainer, and then I did Callanetics. So it was all different types, but I didn't want my stunt double doing all the fight scenes -- like that boxing scene. I wanted that to be me. So I was actually training six days a week, three hours a day for a couple of months. If I had a longer period of time -- I mean, I was so into it. I was watching Million Dollar Baby at night, like, "I want to be like Hilary Swank!" [Laughs] But I wanted it to be real. I feel like that's what Laurel would be doing. It was definitely hard, especially once we started shooting, but I knew at some point -- you put all this time and effort into it -- I want to say probably around November, I could back off a little bit, because once you have that muscle you don't have to work so hard. Once it's there it's like, "Okay. I can chill a little bit." So it's definitely not as intense right now, but I'm definitely still training. I used to be a competitive gymnast, so I try to incorporate as much as I can. It's been amazing.

  5. Well, this interview was good... It touched a lot of concerns i had and i'm really open minded. I know Katie can pull it off, since i loved her on Supernatural. And it seems she really is gonna hit a hard time trying to be a superheroe.
I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't wear the suit until the finale after this trilogy.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Also, when i say only IGN covers the BC story i'm not kidding... It's always IGN!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Can't wait for this I do wish the cw would do birds of prey with zatanna black widow catwoman other superheroes woman intstead of thinking of doing atom man

    ReplyDelete
  8. Black Widow? xD LMFAO

    ReplyDelete
  9. One of the few arcs I'm excited for, let's see if the writers actually deliver this time

    ReplyDelete
  10. They burned themselves with the previous birds of prey. They not gonna try anytime soon.

    ReplyDelete
  11. And...people will continue to complain, lol.

I'm all for Laurel Lance as Black Canary right now, especially when I know what's most likely going to happen with her first run as BC.

    ReplyDelete
  12. To be honest the only thing that makes it ok for me to watch this character become a superhero, is the actress's dedication for this story...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Crossover event!

    ReplyDelete
  14. This is part of her entire arc though. Either becoming her sister or making this mantle off of her own bearing.

    ReplyDelete
  15. You mean like they complained in that thread about Felicity? Of course the hiatus is making them cranky.

    ReplyDelete
  16. saying honoring would be enough. And she is not gonna be the same person as her sister. I just keep remembering when Laurel screamed at Sara you stole my love, and now she is becoming her.

    ReplyDelete
  17. that was like 2 people lol.

    ReplyDelete
  18. it did generate over 100 comments lol.

    ReplyDelete
  19. of a few people arguing back and forth. Very entertaining though.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Katie is so happy and excited about this storyline that it makes it all sound better than I see it from my perspective. Maybe I'm not glad about how things went with Laurel and Sara, and I'm not so invested in this plot but it's a really great chance for Katie and I'm happy about her.

    ReplyDelete
  21. " It just gives me the image how the damn jacket fell at her feet while Sara was dying."

What? Sara's jacket was on her when she died. It was Sara's mask the fell, but it fell on the opposite side of which side Laurel was by.

But....as I said this is Laurel's story arc this season, I don't necessarily take this as Laurel saying she's becoming SARA. Laurel is becoming a "creation" as much as her sister became The Canary. Laurel IS going to becoming The Canary, but as I replied earlier, she's going to make it her own, i.e. Black Canary.

    ReplyDelete
  22. You are right it was the mask. This becoming her sister just rubs me the wrong way.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Which thread did they complain about Felicity? I haven't been following comments that I don't reply to, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It was a post about Felicitys feelings from the TV Line article. With quotes from Guggenheim & Kreisenberg. It just blew up.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well, that's where you get to biased "ship" fans. I don't bother with that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I couldn't possibly be less interested in Laurel as a character or as a "superhero,"and usually watch in spite of her, but Katie seems really excited about her upcoming storyline, so good for her.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You might be reading it, or taking it, the wrong way too. I'd say watch how it works on screen compared to how it's said by Katie or the writers in interviews.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i like to read everything. I am an Arrow spoiler junkie.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Its still too soon i would say, especially how they keep showing Sara dying.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Too soon to have Laurel get her butt kick? I don't think so. There had to be a huge event in making Laurel suit up in some way or form. Sara had to die or one of her parents had to die. At the beginning of the series, people said Laurel would become Black Canary as soon as Quentin died, but the death was Sara's instead. Something drastic had to happen for someone like Laurel, with really no rhyme or reason, to try to fight crime especially when both Ollie and Roy have had reasons to do what they do. Laurel's not going to be in the same league as everyone else because she's still on her "island".

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm talking about the comments. I'd read spoilers; but I don't care about the comments shipping this or that. It just makes people sound like kids.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah, she does seem really dedicated to it and excited by it, and that's nice to see. I wish I felt the same way, haha.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I really hope this new role does her character a little justice coz she already have a whole fandom hating on her character!

    ReplyDelete
  34. No no she can take a step into being vigilante. Be as good as she can be. And i understand her need to suit up to have her revenge.
Just becoming her sister sentence makes me miss Sara & I get frustrated and not so much at LL as at the writers. And we kept seeing Sara dying & falling in that dumpster. Enough is enough.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's odd how people view the same material differently. I thought Roy was and continues to be handled just right. Laurel on the other hand ... I understand the importance of the Black Canary's role in the Arrow universe. Sara as the Canary was wonderful. However, something isn't meshing well for me with Laurel's character overall let alone her stepping into the role of this hero. I really wish I could phrase it or explain it better. It's just that Katie's interpretation of Laurel hasn't really worked for me pretty much from day one. I can't even sense there is a void on the show when Laurel isn't in an episode. That is so strange for me to say because I also thought Katie was fantastic as Ruby on Supernatural. Ruby was a complicated, strong character and Katie really delivered. On paper, Laurel is interesting and complex, but it isn't translating well on screen for me. I do give Katie credit though for excitement and commitment to Laurel's character.

    ReplyDelete
  36. yeah don't really get the complaints of how Roy's storyline was handled tbh. IT could have been better but I don't think it's worse than Laurel's storyline.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow. This sounds great. Hopefully she delivers

    ReplyDelete
  38. I really hope for this to go the right way and not turn south. Reading posts on facebook (even Arrow unrelated ones) really turned me off on the fandom. Like that Golden Globe picture TVLine posted....god what people were saying -,-

    ReplyDelete
  39. given that Roy really has a handfull of lines turns him into a special case, he's like the cardboard you carry around to have it spit out 1-2 lines per episode (at best).

    ReplyDelete
  40. The problem I have with Roy's storyline is once he was introduced to Diggle and Felicity they did not develop any relationship between the three. Instead it was all about Lance family until Roy dumped Thea and got kidnapped by Slade. Also the archery blunder.

    ReplyDelete
  41. That line kinda made me sad and shake my head in disbelief. I really wish every castmember the best and it burns my heart to know that she's getting this ammount of hate through the internet. I only hope that she's detatched enough from the web to not let this stuff get to her.

I admire her dedication (everybodys dedication really, Amell works out like hell, Emily works out since doing Arrowas well, Barrowman works non-stop it seems to make his schedule fit for Arrow and, and and).

No matter how often one has to disagree with the writers but the cast has shown an incredible dedication to their product that it feels hard to criticize them....seriously I feel terrible whenever calling Colton a not so gifted actor

    ReplyDelete
  42. So all of this is just you missing Sara?

Lol, welcome to the club. I like the character as well and Caity Lotz was very beautiful as much as she was funny off-screen, but....life, even in a TV series, goes on.

But you're going to CONTINUE seeing Sara falling off that building if it's called for in the recap montage. That's just plain and simple about that.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't feel terrible calling Colton a not so gifted actor because despite his hard work and dedication on his role it's my personal opinion about his portrayal of his character, but i find it really unhealthy for someone to go on twitter and for example send him a message telling him he is not a good actor or spreading hate over him. People that bash KC need mental help ASAP. Sending death threats to her and other things is troubling in many ways. Also i heard people bash SA for the way he promotes his show...it's nice to be passionate about a show but there is a line and when it is crossed people should seek for help because they probably use their passion over a character or a show as a justification to unleash hate.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i stopped looking after it was over 100 comments.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I have nothing to say.

    ReplyDelete
  46. A lot of people have a hard time separating the face on the screen with the actor. I don't like Laurel's shifting personality(one episode she's yelling at Oliver and the next she's giving him relationship advices, for example), for example. I don't like how disjointed she is from the story having 2 and a half seasons in and to never interact with the core supporting cast(Digg, Felicity and Roy). But i don't hate on Katie Cassidy... I'm not an animal... But some idiots are and one needs to know that stupid people isn't going anywhere.

On the acting side, Colton is a sub-par actor... If not, he would be doing some other things, tbh. Even someone as Shia LaBeouf did good acting in "The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman"... They're on theCW because they're not that good, and that's not a abd thing. I don't see why you should feel bad for saying the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree with everything except the "they're on theCW because they're not that good" part. Daniel Gillies and Sebastian Roché are outstanding performers who not only have graced the small screen but also had some pretty major cinematic adventures.Apparently Gina Rodriguez is fantastic as well. And to a lesser extent Joseph Morgan and John Barrowman are also better than one would say theCW should allow

    ReplyDelete
  48. haha this is true but I'm talking about more in season 2.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't find terrible about calling CH the worst actor on the show. I never felt terrible about my dislike of Katie Cassidy's acting as Laurel (only seen her in a terrible movie Montecarlo elsewhere). I still find her responsible along with the writers for making me dislike Laurel. Because on paper she should be the one I must root for. But till now I can'thow much ever she cries. That falls on actress as well as writers especially writers. I have criticized her look last season which I am ashamed of in hindsight. I am not a fan of some of her interviews too.

But she has really worked hard physically for this role and I admire that. And her enthusiasm and genuine happiness shines through in this article. I hope I end up liking Laurel.

    ReplyDelete
  50. That was a great interview that got me even more excited for S2- I'm glad that Roy will be the first to accept Laurel, since he went through a similar journey that she's going through, so it'd be a bit hypocritical of him to tell her no, when he never took no for an answer (not even when it was an arrow to the knee!). Katie is so dedicated to the Black Canary arc and so excited for it, I can't help but feel the same. Next week will see the rise of the Canary, a storyline 2 and a half seasons in the making and it's about damn time.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yeah my problem with his storyline is that they introduced him to the team and then he was absent for like 3 episode and you never saw him. But besides that I was okay with it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I wouldn't know about Gillies since i do not watch The Originals, yet Roché was just a guest star on Supernatural. Barrowman idk why is a regular, tbh; he's being used for nothing...
There's a lot of buzz on Gina Rodriguez... Is she that great or is the performance overrated?
Two things i really want to see is Emily Bett Rickards on a proper comedy like Community and The Big Bang Theory and Katie Cassidy on a really dark drama(not Gossip Girl type but something serious).

    ReplyDelete
  53. as someone that did stage work I kind of have respect for any actor out there, that's why it's kind of tough for me to criticize any actor (doesen't mean that I don't do it because I do...a lot)

Twitter has changed our generation, it turns the contact to celebreties seemingly more personal (it doesen't, it just gives you the feeling) and thus turns people more invested. In a positive or negative way, some feel no empowered to personally attack a celeb for whatever reason.

I've been so dumb myself once as well, after being continously bombarded with "u should die" and "f*** off hater" comments on twitter I retaliated by going somewhere completely else and being a absolute prick (not in my usual lovable way but outright violent and offensive). That kind of tought me a valuable lesson: twitter is poison.

I feel bad for Stephen though, whenever he's trying to defend Katie on his fb account it backfires through rants about him allegedly being "rude to his own fans"

    ReplyDelete
  54. That line is....it's a puzzler. Honestly, if I was her or Willa or Colin, I would have NEVER imagined to ever say that comment because, hey, the producers themselves said they hate writing about JUST Oliver Queen as they hated that secret identity aspect of it all and it goes around to everyone else that doesn't play a part of the Arrow storylines. Laurel, Thea, Tommy...they ended up getting most of the short stick of it all with abysmal story arcs until Tommy knew the secret, until Laurel knew the secret and until Thea met up with the future Arsenal.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Gillies was in Spiderman 2, Captivity, Bride and Prejudice, No one can hear you and a bunch of other flicks you may have seen.

Roché is a semi-regular on The Originals. And Barrowman...I think they just want him under contract, he's jumping from project to project so it's always a tough job to get him, if he's under contract he has to stay free wich works in their favor.

I want to see EBR in something BUT a comedy, something where we get to see her entire range because, truth be told, I'm not digging her dramatic performances on Arrow. Maybe because she's not given the right material or because she needs to build on it but seeing her in something showcasing her acting would be really interesting.

Katie just starred in "The Scribbler" wich sounds like a drama http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2396721/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_2

she was also in the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot wich...really isn't worth a watch

    ReplyDelete
  56. Just about the amount of times they have started and then dropped story lines for Laurel is ridiculous. Thea/Laurel mentor relationship.. gone, Laurel and her CNRI work... gone, Laurel against Arrow... gone within 3 episodes, Laurel starts addiction... she is mia for two episodes the list goes on...

Thea's case is miserable. With Laurel they atleast try stuff. Thea was window dressing for Roy once he was introduced until Slade kidnapped her and Malcolm took her away.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well, EBR's dramatic side is what we saw, for example, in 3x02... The problem with that scene was that i felt was kind of out of nowhere, since why should she be thaaaat upset about Sara. This is one of my main problems with Arrow: they show the characters bonding with Oliver, yet we don't see much between the supporting cast(it's something that we must asume happens off-camera). I know it's not only about Sara, since she is also mixing it with what happened in 3x01 with Oliver. Yet, i didn't wanted that for her... Idk how to explain it...
But overall, i like the little drama she's done on Arrow and yeah, it would be cool seeing her in a drama too, but i would be lying if i say i wouldn't love seeing her on, for example, Community. Maybe a show like Shameless US(my favourite show right now) would be a great middle point.

The Scribbler is a comic(they add stuff in the movie) and she does great work there, but i like grounded dramas in a non-fiction world. I want to see her do a drama somewhere else because i know my problems with the character of Laurel is taking me back off from enjoying her acting.

    ReplyDelete
  58. A problem (regarding Roy Felicity and Dig) they have rectified pretty well.

    ReplyDelete
  59. She is fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Gina? I haven't started JtV yet, I really need to get on with watching it

    ReplyDelete
  61. You should. Just be warned dude. It's a pseudo telenovela that parodies the genre. So it's self-awarely over the top and does include a lot of romantic drama (though well acted and pretty well written) and pokes fun at soap melodrama. But it doesn't take itself too seriously. Is pretty humorous and is very different in terms of feel from everything else on the CW. Also it has the best use of narration I've seen in a while. And a lot of subtitled Spanish (which I find cool).

Your excited for this arc?? Just so you know that this isn't a Laurel bashing type question but do you really think that they have handled this storyline well so far??

    ReplyDelete
  63. yeah, but he did got bashed for not defending her too, or even about a recent interview he gave about his character . You should see how fans treat Marc G. now that he has tumblr...some even called him coward , he handles the hate very good though.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The exact opposite they absolutely messed it up. Started to break Laurel down to build her up with the drug-arc but abandoned it and left it feeling annoying.

They have to salvage that plot now wich I'm excited for as it's one of the few plots I can see them build on.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Rheinmeister09 .15 January 2015 at 00:53

I feel bad for Katie Cassidy because she is a good actress. I liked the way they were going in S1 with her character but found myself hitting the fast forward button for most of her S2 scenes. Not sure if it was just the way the story line was written or if playing that type of broken character is just not her forte....That been said I am hopeful that they do a good job of this story line and just keep building her up. I think we're all done with the whiny side of her character.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I really don't like to look at internet hate further, I'll criticize but I dislike letting my emotions get the best of me, even about such a non-issue as a tv show.
But it's safe to say that there're nutjobs in every camp

I never joined tumblr but always hear the worst about it, so I'm sure that this place is worse than twitter lol

I'm not a fan of Guggenheims way to "pander" to one fanbase only but no one should get hate thrown his way because of a marketing strategy.

While I love to discuss, gush and criticize TV and media in general there's that weird sentiment that a TV show has to appeal to YOU as an individual. Wich simply isn't the case. It's the artists view and I hate nothing more but seeing an artist limiting his own vision due to fan demands (wich, I admit, is why I have an issue with a lot of ships because a lot of them are created within the fanbase. Agree or disagree I'll never be a shipper. I see the appeal of Oliver/Felicity and even like them together but the way it has been rushed to get it to a point fans will be satisfyed is just something I can't stand for....just to make my view on things within the Arrow fandom clear).

    ReplyDelete
  67. I won't miss Sara as a character, she was rather flat and Lotz portrayed her very stale. However she was the eyecandy Arrow threw towards the male fanbase. The female counterpart to Olivers shirtless training scenes.

However I think Caity left at the right time, she got cast (allegedly) as Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat: Legacys third season (wich stv apparently refuses to cover :( ) and given her atheletic training will be around for quite a while. Zoe Bell has been around for ages now

    ReplyDelete
  68. Exactly, my issue with the character was always that Katie was underutilized and if used got god awful material.

I'm hoping for the writers really giving her the storyline she deserves.

I get what they wanted to do, to show her becoming Black Canary slowly by giving the viewers a visual idea of what she had to go through herself. But that didn't work for the fanbase. So they had to fast forward through some stuff

    ReplyDelete
  69. And the show Oliver training in archery on the island for like two days. In all honestly, it's a comic book show with heightened reality stuff like this is just always gonna be.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm not so sure it was rushed for the fans. The marketing and teases were intentional. But honestly in regards to the actual writing I just think it was the writers' own choice. But that's me just going off the clear liking of Felicity as a character, and the slow weird hints they've been doing for the last few seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  71. The second they introduced Felicity and had her make big eyes at Oliver they started it. BUT all I'm saying is that they should have taken a bit more time building on these feelings before just completely rushing it like they did this season

    ReplyDelete
  72. lol What ? He was training for longer than two days, remember he had Shado, her father, Slade and Argus (so far) as his teachers.

    ReplyDelete
  73. OMG Gillies was Mary Jane's fiance in Spider-man 2. Right? Can't believe I never recognized him,

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yep and he was supposed to be Part 3s villain but Sony demanded to have Venom

    ReplyDelete
  75. I haven't even checked out S2 of Legacy, but....this news would be brilliant. I need to see more of Lotz, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  76. You really should, the best part about it is that it's pretty much a 90 minute movie. The bluRay actually treats it like one. You can watch it as a seamless feature or episode-per-episode

    ReplyDelete
  77. I saw S1 and really liked it except for the Raiden episode. It is as grounded or more fantastical?

    ReplyDelete
  78. You really blame the fandom? I accept that some people are rude and hateful but they aren't the ones writing the show.

I've watched over 70 shows and Laurel is one of the WORST written main characters I have ever seen. It's honestly amateurish.

    ReplyDelete
  79. they pretty much abandoned the realism aspect. We now have them going to Outworld, Ermac appears and stuff like that. It's more fantastical and steps towards the older movies in terms of style and tone (also Caspar VanDien is perfect as Johnny Cage)

The only real departure from the usual canon is that Liu Kang is now a villain instead of a hero

    ReplyDelete
  80. With Arrow off 'resurrecting' for the next three episodes do you think

    a) Laurel as The Black Canary will start using his bow and arrows ?

    and

    b) Do you think they will do say a year time jump ( by the next Arrow/Flash crossover in season 4/2 "The Flash" will have done one to catch up ) so all the pieces of the 'puzzle' can be scattered in the wind / off in many different directions to cause havoc for Oliver once he returns ?

    ReplyDelete
  81. The writers are the ones who make her character inconsistent and unlikable though. You probably shouldn't have any faith in them either.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm pretty sure it was a training montage that lasted longer than they actually showed. It would be really boring if they showed him repetitively shooting a bow for 40 mins.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Very true! but I lose faith in the writers too, then I might as well stop watching the show. So, I'm gonna keep it for little longer ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  84. They will be totally and separate creations.

Sara was only ever know as The Canary (a translation of her League name as Ta-er al-Sahfer (Yellow Bird) (الطائر الأصفر), likely due to her blond hair well Laurel will become The Black Canary ... the yellow bird with a black heart of sorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The problem I have with her story is that based on the interviews that have been done lately with regards to her becoming Black Canary, it seems that the general idea is that because Laurel's been through some tough times and "hit rock bottom," that somehow becoming a superhero is her reward, even though it doesn't make logical sense within the story.

With Oliver, we saw what he was when he first came home from the island, and while we didn't have to watch his learning/training period in real time, we saw what he was capable and we knew why he was doing what he was doing. And over the past few years we've watched him try to become worthy of the "hero" title. Same with Roy (albeit on a much, much smaller scale): he was a good kid who did bad things, then found some motivation to do some good, and he grew under Oliver's tutelage. I get why he's doing what he's doing, I understand it.

Laurel's journey? It's not linear, it doesn't make sense. It's just a series of terrible things that haven't really led her to where she is today. She works at CNRI and Tommy dies. Is she in any way constructive with that? Does it lead her to want to do good things? No. She becomes an alcoholic and drug addict. Okay, fine. Does she meet some people through AA or some other channel that inspire her to grow or change or do good? No, she just overcomes and it's sort of a background thing. She uses blackmail to get her job back with the DA, so...does that lead anywhere interesting? Is she becoming frustrated by her inability to put criminals away because her hands are tied by the law? Nah, she's happily getting them put away with the Arrow's help over the summer - not a single issue there! Then Sara gets killed, and she's thirsty for revenge. Okay, cool. Is she so committed to the idea that her whole life becomes about getting revenge for Sara? Is it her singular focus? Nah, she just starts taking some boxing lessons to let off some steam and goes after some spousal abuser with a bat because it gives her a high that pills and booze never did. Now she's honoring Sara? What?

To me the whole storyline would've worked so much better if after the Undertaking she went balls-to-the-wall after Moira to punish her for her part in Tommy's death (instead of stupidly blaming the Arrow and then giving it up a few eps later), get frustrated because Moira managed to get off, then slowly become disillusioned with the legal system and see all the people slipping through the cracks because she couldn't legally get the evidence she needed to convict them. Then, after Sara's death, she could've still wanted revenge, but she really would've had the inspiration to take up the mantle in her honor, and I totally would've bought into it and been invested in her and would've believed that it was, in fact, honoring Sara's legacy in trying to do good. Now I just feel like she's doing what she's doing because she wanted to be a part of the cool kids vigilante club.

The way they've handled character progression/ascension to the BC is a complete mess.

  86. No! The fandom is not at fault for Larurel's bad writting! And I wouldn't mind the fandom if they restrained themselves to bashing the character itself, I may not be a Laurel hater, but so many things have been done wrong with her character, that is hard not to get where they're comming from. My problem is that they took all that and turned it into Katie-bashing. You don't like a character, fine, you think the actor/actress playing it is doing a por job, ok, but don't continuesly bash the actress, don't insult her on social media. I mean, Laurel haters have made an art out of hating the actress, not only the character. That's why I've lost faith in the fandom. Most of those you find in social media (not on this site, here they are a minority) are rude and hateful and completely obtuse, you're either with them or against them. Most of the time I want to Yell at them to grow up and get a life, because if you can hate someone you have never met with such a passion, you're in serious need of one.

  87. I agree. In season 3 we can see them bonding. At least we can see Roy and Felicity bonding. Also we had that dinner at Diggles'. But I was talking about Roy's journey from starting to train with Oliver in a warehouse to getting a mask in season 2.

  88. He was.. Now I have to see spiderman 2 again. Never noticed before. I love Gillies.

  89. I completely agree 100%. This is my issue with the BC story line. Why does she want to go out of justice system to help people? I get her need for revenge and justice for Sara. I can see she will not get it through regular channels. But why does she feel the need to defend regular people out of court room except for copying Sara. But Sara was also an assassin.

I have said these tjings several times here and I don't want to go into another Laurel/BC how it could have done better discussion. It's a done deal now. I hope I like the future episodes. I am a forgiving person. I am ready to forget all nonsense if the future is bright :p

  90. The problem with CNRI is Laurel and Joanna risked their lives in season 1 finale to save the documents and protect their clients resulting in Tommy's death. Which was unfortunate but not Laurel's fault. Laurel in a deleted scene says if we don't help them who will. Then few months later in season 2 premiere neither Laurel nor Joanna is helping those poor bastards. Things would have gone so much differently had we seen Laurel furiously trying to help every one of her CNRI clients with less money maybe even working out of her home. By her not looking back to CNRI clients we end up asking what was the point of saving those papers?

  91. It breaks my heart that she is so excited and the writers (up 'til the present) have given her terrible material and an obnoxious character. But I don't blame the fans for not liking the character or the portrayal, that is their right as fans (not to be mean to KC personally, but to express it). She is a professional and she's been in the business for a while, I'm sure she's learned to block out the crazy Internet fans.

  92. The problem is for people who don't like her and haven't liked her for 3 seasons, TPTB can't just say, "look she's not obnoxious anymore" or "look at me I'm badass" there is a history there that has to be overcome (and possibly made up for) before people will forgive and let something new happen. It remains to be seen if the writers will do that.

  93. It certainly would have helped to have given her a reason to be in the Glades after she promised twice not to be. It's stuff like that that add up and end up with a really unlikable character. Maybe they'll stop doing it. Or I'm just going to have to accept that the writers don't want you to like Laurel.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I don't expect them to change their minds at alI . I've already said that neither Katie nor the writers can do right when it comes to that portion of the fandom, they're just too determined to hate her. At this point, I wish she'd move on to a project where, at least, the writers and showrunners have her back and she's more appreciated...

    ReplyDelete
  95. Just to clarify, I'm not saying they can't change their minds, but she has for lack of better word "penance" to do first. When someone's upset you, sometimes not doing it anymore isn't enough, you need an apology. I'm not saying as a character she has to literally apologize, but the writers need to throw people a bone first so they can get on the forgiveness path.

  96. I think that's why it ended up being a deleted scene as the S2 train continued moving without looking back at any sort of "resolution" to those CNRI clients. Yah, I get your point...it would've been cool to see, but with Laurel working for the DA, it was a bigger plateau with helping out those same clients, and I think one could imagine that she did do just that. And even Joanna moved on herself into seemingly bigger and better things.

  97. We also saw Roy and Oliver bonding. Honestly, I'm not really bothered by the Mirakuru bit at all. Roy was already Oliver's informant. Oliver knew due to his vigilantism that he was good and wanted to do good.Which combined with his desire to help others and Roy and trust that Roy as a good person who cares for his sister, would fight by his side and protect the people of Starling and is ready to join the team. To me it just makes sense, Oliver saw Roy's humanity and knew he could give him guidance and that he faced hell with the mirakuru and believing he could be better, chose to give him that chance as his father, Shado and Yao Fei did on the island by giving him that mask. I'm cool with it.

  98. Okay. No matter what it's all still pretty iffy from a sense of reality.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Sara wasn't known as The Canary because of her blonde hair. She chose that name because she remembered the canary her dad bought her when she was young.

  100. I'll check it out for sure. I'm fine whether realistic/grounded or fantastical, but choose one. That's why I wasn't a fan of the Raiden episode in S1 when everything else felt more real in its own way. If S2 stayed with one tone, then I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

I hate CBMs that have a change of tone. It's how I feel about films in general and television.

  101. I have never had an issue with Oliver/Roy relationship. I have no problem with the way Oliver brought in Roy on the secret. Infact I liked it. It was done in stages. First informant, then trainee and later when situation required he revealed himself and his team. Loved it till then. Problem started from that point onwards to season finale when he wakes up. We don't see Roy in Arrow cave, no mingling with other members of Team Arrow and no hitting the target (I am still annoyed by that). Otherwise I am cool with Roy. Season 3 is way better.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I actually enjoyed the Raiden episode, the only episode I had an issue with was Cyrax vs. Sektor. It all of a sudden turned full sci-fi MK on us (not that I mind but the clan had some pretty heavy backstory that would've been required for the episode).

But the general difference between both seasons is that season 1 is telling a new tale each episode while season 2 is one big arc :)

    ReplyDelete
  103. That's it. It looks like both Laurel and Joanna moved onto bigger better things and it makes the whole drama at CNRI saving papers pointless. It's the building that went down not her clients. If only one of her CNRI clients came to DA's office asking for her help or if we were shown Laurel unofficially helping these people.

They could have shown her depressed and at the same time over working herself. For me things like these have compounded into my utter dislike for this character. But I always hope I will change my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  104. yeah you're right and it reminded her of her humanity

    ReplyDelete
  105. We did but granted it was only a few minutes. And demonstrating the threat of Deathstroke felt like a bigger deal to me than showing Roy training. Though I get why that's a possible issue.

    ReplyDelete
  106. why would she be using his bow & arrow. What logical explanation could they give. Is too much how they handled the use of the bow with Roy.

    ReplyDelete
  107. We will have to agree to disagree. Imo they did a disservice to the character by dropping CNRI. I truly believe they moved her to DA's office to put her in an authority position against Arrow and the drama from it. Which did not work for me. I would have preferred the first.

    ReplyDelete
  108. What?! Only 125 comments? Are you guys feeling OK? :D
Maybe this is a good sign that you got all the fighting out of your system.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I loved that show </3

    ReplyDelete
  110. Of course they placed Laurel in a position where she could actually be a threat to Arrow this time around. That I agree with as well, but I felt it was a natural progression for Laurel to certainly be there.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I was not the fact that Laurel working for DA's office was a stretch. She is a smart, hard working lawyer of course she got the job. For me it felt like during filming season 1 finale they had plans for continuing CNRI work but during hiatus they decided let's put Laurel against Laurel but how? let's forget CNRI and its clients and put her in DA's office so that she can hunt Arrow. It glares out more because we lost Tommy due to CNRI and its clients. So I disagree with you on that. But that's okay. We all see things differently.

    ReplyDelete
  112. No, I think they always wanted to move Laurel up, but only that they discarded any idea of Laurel going back to those CNRI clients, because of that one deleted scene alone really tells a different story of what could have been.

    ReplyDelete
  113. "All the fighting out of your system" What?? Lol we haven't even begun to fight. We save that for the show.
