  5. I'm excited and a little apprehensive at the same time. I mean, I think making the team figure things out without Oliver and Oliver going through this "near death except actually really dead this time" experience is going to be awesome for character building across the board, but the first episode back where everyone thinks Oliver is dead is going to be so very, very sad. I'm looking forward to everything after that, though.

  6. Probably, but it's funnier the other way, though. XD

  10. i am disapointed i must say. It didnt really scream at me. Must see.

  11. I know... It was way too fast paced and non sequential. Just small glimpses that didn't make sense.

I hate that kind of promo... The only part that made sense(Malcolm in The Foundry) we already knew about.

  12. Their promos are usually good, but this was not it.

  13. Let's cross fingers New Zealand's comes out soon...

    ReplyDelete
  14. they should just use the New Zealand promos as their promos.

  15. I'm finding I have very little tolerance for getting emotionally jerked around by this Oliver is Dead BS. It is completely destroying all the emotion and stakes of worrying about him actually dying. They can't play this card more than once and they have a lot of show left in which they need the audience to be emotionally attached to wanting Oliver to not be dead. But, it'll be hollow. I'll have grieved and lost and everything. They're doing all the trappings of ending the show with Oliver. They have to hit reset and it will ruin not only the dramatic tension moving forward because been there, done that, but also poisons my opinion of the previous stories because I don't like being manipulated.

Sometimes I just want to yell at TPTB: The opposite of love is hate...not indifference. Pissing me off isn't an effective storytelling technique.

  16. Agree. I kept hitting pause to try to figure out what was happening.

  17. The EPs have said these next 3 episodes are among the best they done so far. How about you wait and see how it plays out before quickly dismissing it.

  18. They always say that. It's like an ad campaign. I'm not required to believe what Nike says just because they say it either.

I think they've made a mistake: death should mean something. The further they go down the road of full-on Oliver is dead mourning the more upset I get, ie, I have very little tolerance for the emotional manipulation. Turning off the Foundry, Diggle being lost, etc. These are emotionally manipulative images in the promo that I am commenting on. I think they made a mistake and they are compounding it with every image and spoiler they release about how emotional all the scenes are coming up. Because they have to erase it all. What does it mean when he comes back not dead? It means you jerked me around and made me cry for nothing. And personally, I don't forgive that. And story-wise, you've eliminated the stakes of life and death.

    ReplyDelete
  19. um Palmer's The Atom not The Blue Beetle

    ReplyDelete
  20. I really think you need to watch first before you judge. I mean, can you really say there were ever any emotional stakes in worrying about the main character of the entire series dying? Of course not. There was never any conceivable scenario in which he didn't come back, thus no stakes at all.It was just a plot tool used to advance a different aspect of certain characters storylines.

As a side note, in pretty much all professional philosophical circles, the opposite of love IS indifference. Love and Hate are 'hot' emotions. Indifference is 'cold'. You can't truly hate what you have never loved.

    ReplyDelete
  21. exactly. It's the main character. Everyone already knows he's not actually dead lol.

    ReplyDelete
  22. They won't be the best ones... That's for sure. They're going to be a mini-story disjointed from the main arc without the lead and the outcome will be one of the most absurds a serious show ever did.

But hey! They must promote it for people to watch... Yet, there are going to be some cool stuff to watch, i guess...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, it was kind of a joke, since the character on Arrow is Ted Kord/Blue Beetle. They just couldn't get the rights, but didn't even change the character's personality or the suit.

    ReplyDelete
  24. RIGHT?! it's going to be awesome

    ReplyDelete
  25. Two weeks...god help me!!!! and Roy looks badass!! Totally excited for him.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I would love that... That would be the right way to do it. Sadly, i fear that's where Laurel comes in: Team Arrow is lost and she enters with the big speech. She doesn't takes Oliver's place on the field but as a leader.

I will pray to God that you're right, but that's the only way the "Oliver's death makes Laurel become BC a necessary thing" statement could work... Otherwise, why would she be necessary for Team Arrow? She can't fight, she doesn't have a relationship of any kind with any of the three...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes, exactly so why emotionally manipulate me watching other people grieve for him for no reason? They want the drama of death and the ability to erase it. Well, for me, they can't have both without annoying me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. What is up with this current trendy idea that TV storylines happen in a vacuum? Like nothing happened before, or we have no idea how TV works? Like I'm already annoyed from them emotionally jerking me around with the mountaintop death scene. I've seen promos and read quotes where the TPTB are telling me of big emotional scenes with Felicity and Diggle reacting to his death. It's not an f-ing mystery what is going to happen. It's like watching a sorority girl walk down darkened basement steps in a horror movie. I don't have to like it. But pretending anything is possible is just nonsensical.

There are two aspects of killing Oliver: one is making me go through the emotional loss and then hitting the reset button--the long-term impact of this is frustration and lack of emotional stakes anytime he is in danger in the future--don't cry wolf/fool me once and all that. Two is bringing him back from the dead. Dead is no longer dead. It is why didn't they stick Sara in the Lazarus Pit. It is when they want to write another story where death is a catalyst and you ask why can't they just come back--if you think it is a good storytelling feature look at the havoc it's caused on TVD and SPN. Dead should mean dead. Arrow is this dark grounded story with life and death stakes. Now it is life and resurrection stakes and that isn't nearly so compelling.

I have a pretty big soapbox on the "professional philosophical circles" concept of how opposites work. But passion is the opposite of indifference and love is the opposite of hate. But for TV situations, I might watch something I'm indifferent to. But after I'm done venting, I'll stop watching something I hate--whether it started out as love or not.

  29. They're trying so hard not to give anything away with the promos that they're literally giving nothing! I'm terribly excited for Arrow to return, but I'm underwhelmed with this promo.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I hate these fast paced promos. I have to watch them for like 5 times to see everything and I still miss some shots :\
Anyway I'm excited to see the team step up their game in Oliver's absence especially Roy but watching their reactions is going to hurt so much, my poor babies.
I think there will be a time jump after they find out. They will be devastated and will stop working for a while and their absence will encourage the criminals to rally so the team will have to resume their activities and that's why Laurel will have to become BC. Laurel and Ray; I seriously can't get less excited about their stories, no offense to their fans.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think Dig will be in charge of the team.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I can actually relate with what you're saying. It's obvious that Oliver Queen will return one way or another, I also feel emotionally jerked! The fact that they did this over hiatus is pissing me off even more. I think the withdraw is getting to me. Just hoping these next episodes doesn't suck too much.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I still fail to see how it emotionally jerked you around in any way. You had to know the moment the scene occurred that it couldn't be what it seemed, Oliver dead. I agree it was a heart stopping moment when it happened, but only for that moment.

I think your taking this way too seriously. Oliver coming back from the dead does nothing to undercut the grounded foundation of the show, it's a comic book show. People come back from the dead all the time in comic books. If your looking dead means dead in shows like Arrow or TVD, shows with supernatural elements in them, then your looking in the wrong place. Why would the writers of a comic book or supernatural themed show not use all the tools at there disposal? Either way, judging by the frustration this event has given you, perhaps you need to take your own advice and stop watching something you hate. This show seems to be causing you frustration and is playing with your emotions (i still can't fathom how). Maybe its time to move on to shows set in non supernatural/comic book settings, that way dead does in fact mean dead.

Anytime you want to stand on that 'soapbox' and debate philosophy, pop over to /r/philosophy on reddit and I would be happy to debate you on how passion is in no way the opposite of indifference.

  34. She's kicking something. Looks like a guy's head.

  35. How come? Roy is the apprentice. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if Roy tries to get Dig to stay away from even more trouble now because he still has a fiancee and child.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm with you with Laurel entering the fray with some big speech, but I still think Roy's going to become the leader until Ollie shows up. Before the mid-season finale, the producers only spoke about how important the "trilogy" will be for Laurel, but now they're talking about how important it will be for Roy.

Also, it will also be important for Laurel to even have any part, as much as Ray(as he's working on his Atom suit). Starling City needs as many heroes they need right now since Brick will be causing some major havoc, but Laurel's importance could be anything and not just solely being the leader.

    ReplyDelete
  37. You really think Roy outranks Dig? If Roy as the apprentice (who has been doing this for only a year) outranks Dig then that makes Dig what exactly? And Dig didn't stop going on missions after episode 2. Even in episode 8 when Lyla was in danger he didn't lose his focus; quite the opposite actually he was even more motivated.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Dig may go on the field, but he's always the "shadow man", not really doing as much as Ollie does, or even Roy now. He doesn't have a mask(wears only a ski mask), doesn't have a costume and drives the van. I don't see how he could become the leader of the team.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I wonder if he is in the Lazarus Pit for a few months or a year. If it's a year, it's more believable cause of Oliver's wounds. Batman took less than a year to get out of that stair like prison. And then it's more plausible for Laurel to become the Black Canary if she trained/fought for a year.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Didn't one of Arrow's producers already rule out use of the Lazarus Pit?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Right because Oliver's "death" completely negates the death of other characters and their importance. Even after he comes back the characters will still be affected. It won't be for nothing. You're really assuming stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Actually, it's a comic book show that's gone out of its way up 'til now to not include the supernatural.

Judging by the way you think you have a clue as to my state of mind and how much that presumed state of mind seems to enrage you, maybe you should stop assuming things?

But since you seem so confused by my point and frankly by the concept of why people post things on Internet boards, I'll clarify:

The point of drama is to elicit an emotional response, for instance, being sad when Oliver is stabbed through the chest and kicked off a mountain as images of the people he loves flashes before his dying eyes (yes, that "heart-stopping moment"). When Diggle is lost without Oliver's mission, the writers hope that we as an audience mourn for what is lost--a continuation of that "only for a moment" experience. This is an emotional response. In this case, that emotional response that they are playing the scene for is counterfeit. The writers want to achieve it without having to deal with the fallout from if it were true, ie, the world really had lost Oliver. And we already know it. So my reaction to the promo doing that exact same thing (what people write in comments sections) was to say, hey this annoys me. I wish they would stop doing it.

Anytime you want to debate how binary oppositions work buy a parka because the minute something "professional" happens on Reddit it's about to get really cold around here. Just try to be aware: modern philosophy hasn't cornered the market on linguistics. There are a lot of theories of language out there.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Really? Didn't know that. Then I have no idea..

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's a slippery slope fallacy. Moira, Sara, and Tommy aren't coming back. They aren't Oliver. And this isn't Supernatural or DBZ death still has meaning. It's more likely Oliver won't actually die but will be heavily heavily near death (if the promos indicate anything). That's not breaking the fourth wall. They're not directly saying anything to the audience by killing a character off, they're killing a character to drive up tension and give stake. That's a fair argument that it could make death meaningless, but again the Oliver incident and what does happen isn't entirely known so we can't fully theorize the effects, nor is there any indication that the writers plan on revving any characters (to the fans of Tommy and Sara's displeasure) or even explicit using the lazarus pits.
