The Vampire Diaries - I Alone - Review

5 Dec 2014

This was sort of an "in-between" episode, building the storyline up a bit more without having any truly epic moments of the sort we saw in the previous hour.  Elena and Damon went to 1994-land to get Bonnie, but even a world away, Kai was stirring up enough trouble to ensure that their plan would hit some speed bumps.  Meanwhile, Sarah's true identity was revealed, leaving Stefan, Enzo, and Matt in a big mess.  And Damon's compelling of Alaric so that he could obtain the Ascendent yielded yet more strife in their troubled bromance.

"If you so much as hurt one hair on her annoying little witch head-" This week, Damon was a man with a plan, and if he had to manipulate Ric to save Bonnie, it was a step he was willing to take.  While Ric, with Jo's help, sussed out Damon's trickery, Damon got Liv to send him and Elena back to Kai's 1994 prison world, where the two proceeded to consider past memories while doing their best to retrieve Bonnie.  Since Bonnie was still a considerable car ride away, after a touching and exciting phone call between her and Elena that got our hopes up way too much, there was little for Damon and Elena to do but wait for their friend's arrival.  This led to a rather charming segment of the episode which featured Elena and Damon enjoying his now habitual pancakes while "Hey Jealousy" by the Gin Blossoms played in the background.  Amazing.  And also, I totally buy that Stefan would have a Boyz II Men cd.  We have that in common.  Elena drawing the whipped cream vamp fangs on Damon's pancakes was a subtly endearing moment that showed the natural bond between them, even without her memories of their love.
Unfortunately, Elena also uncovered Damon's treachery towards Ric and Jo, which angered her not least of all because she assumed that Damon only wanted Bonnie back to convince Elena to love Damon again.  What?  Sorry, Elena, but that's super egotistical and contrived.  I know Damon's been low-key about expressing his newfound friendly feelings for Bonnie, but clearly her sacrifice alone would be motivation enough to save her at the cost of some fairly mild evil.

What I did like about this turn in the episode was that it led to a great speech from Damon regarding his true motivations:

"She had hope. For both of us. She's the reason I survived, the reason I made it out. Who knew? It turns out you spend time with someone and don't kill them, you actually become friends. I'm doing this for Bonnie, Elena, not you."

Needed. To be said.  Elena was able to move on from her hangups and enjoy being at her old family home, which she'd let one terrible memory allow her to burn down despite all the happy memories it also held.  This segued well into her apology to Damon for removing her memories of their love, which were only half her own.  What with the face touching and Damon's sweet comment of "we'll make more," things were looking quite romantic on the Delena front...until Liv and Tyler felt forced by Kai's rampaging to bring them back to the real world ahead of schedule.

The overwhelmingly awful feeling that descended over the episode after that was directly related to poor Bonnie's hopeful dash back to Mystic Falls, thinking she was going to see her friends and finally go home.  The writers are stretching her terrible ordeal out about as far as they possibly can.  I'm so wrapped up in Bonnie's sadness, yet her bravery and strength, with every scene she has in this storyline, that I'm sure to cry when she finally gets to go home.  Here's hoping that happens very soon!

"There's a psycho loose in Mystic Falls and no vampires around to stop him. Whoops."  Arggh!  As frustrating as it is that his smooth machinations almost effortlessly thwart our heroes at every turn, it has to be said that Kai is a wonderful villain.  Remorseless, relentless, and quippy make for a terrifically entertaining combination.  After returning to reality, quickly realizing the discomfort of skinny jeans and the usefulness of earbuds as a murder weapon, Kai made for Liv's bar, where it took her about fifty million years too long to realize who he was.  I know you were only a small child when you last saw your brother, Liv, but could you have looked at the name on the ID right away at least?  Gah!  Luckily, Kai only took some of Liv's power, allowing her to fight back, with some help from Tyler, who slowed the baddie down temporarily.
Confronting Damon and Elena on their return from 1994-land, Kai was quick to destroy the Ascendent, much to Elena's horror (but how about the other one that Kai used to return?).  What a way to meet a new villain.  In the scuffle between the three, Kai managed to skip across the border to Mystic Falls, which means, whoops indeed.  He'll surely cause all sorts of mayhem, and it will be interesting to see who might be able to stop him and/or trick him back over the border so the vamps can have at him.

Alaric was enraged that Damon had deceived him and allowed Kai to return, although logically we know that Damon didn't really have anything to do with Kai's being able to get back since he did that with the other Ascendent.  Still, the situation is what it is, and it looks like another long road back to the Dalaric bromance so many of us love dearly.

"Sarah's" real backstory: Well, she had me fooled.  But Stefan saw through "Sarah's" story about being Zach and Gail's daughter, because he knows quite well what happened to the real Sarah Salvatore.  Unfortunately, this quickly rendered Monique a completely useless character, and easy prey for Enzo (who has apparently been dubbed as this season's excuse for killing off any storyline-buoying character whose time has ended).  So, why did Enzo so ruthlessly murder Monique?  It seems his hatred for Stefan is amplified by his perception of the supposed unfairness of Stefan being considered a hero and Enzo himself a villain.  So I suppose killing Monique was another cruel way to stick it to Stefan. But also, could Enzo have seriously wanted to know about the real Sarah/Monique story that badly, and if so, why?  I don't know, the writing on this aspect of the episode felt a little weak to me.  It's kind of like Enzo was promoted to a series regular without the writers having any clear ideas of what they were going to do with him other than tangentially propel or curtail certain aspects of the plot.  I'd like to see clearer reasons for his behavior and more proof that there's good as well as bad in him.  And incidentally, I wonder when we'll see the real Sarah.  Stefan's speech about his resolve to protect her was really lovely and noble.

Elsewhere in the episode...Matt grew increasingly frustrated with Enzo, and by extension, Stefan.  Not getting the full story on the Sarah situation, Matt assumed that Stefan is like other vampires who undervalue human life (despite all the evidence to the contrary Stefan has shown over the years).  This uncomfortable feeling about being around and tolerating vampires is something Matt has struggled with since he first learned of their existence, and it looks like he'll be going through another attempt to come to terms with where he stands in the scooby gang.  Given that Matt was so quickly affectionate of Monique, he's vengeful towards Enzo and has called upon Jeremy to put down the bottle and help him kill the wayward vamp.  At the very least, this gives Jeremy something else to do besides whine.

Meanwhile, Kai came to Tyler with an offer of teaming up to save Liv, which cannot bode well for Luke.  What's Kai's game here?  It's hard to imagine Tyler stopping at almost any extreme to protect Liv, but what will the consequences be if he makes a "deal with the devil"?

  1. Can someone clear this up for me-Why didn't damon and elena use their
vamp speed to go to portland to pick up bonnie. They could've done it in
half the time and picked her up.It was implied in episode 2 that they
don't lose their vampirism if they travel back in that 1994
purgatory.Damon said he had fangs. So,how come they sat there all the
time in the porch chatting, waiting for bonnie to show up?

  2. This episode kinda disappointed me.Firstly,a caroline less episode is
always a bad omen of what's coming. They really need to stop torturing
poor bonnie, give her a break for god's sake. How much heartbreak can one
girl take time after time! It's like the writers enjoy watching her
suffer on-screen.I'm pretty sure bonnie will remain stuck for the
hiatus. Now we all know what devastating news caroline gets from
stefan-that bonnie can't get out coz kai destroyed the ascendent by a
burning spell. Now that kai is loose in mystic falls,jo better watch
out.As for delena, for the first time i felt like their scenes had a
certain genuine aspect about them.It was not about romance, but about
some other issues altogether,i liked that. That whole monique/fake sarah
storyline was a complete bust at the end.I feel like the writers are
forcing to insert enzo in the most unwanted or illogical
scenarios.Whatever deal stefan has in his personal life, that shouldn't
be enzo's concern. He's just coming and going abruptly & snapping the
neck of some random person every week-ivy,monique!What is the point of
promoting someone to series regular if you don't give him any
storyline?!?I love enzo and his devilish attitude but it seems to me now
that the writers really have no freakin' clue what to do with his
character anymore.Although i don't think anyone is buying this theory
that matt and jeremy-the two dumbest kids in the town most probably, will
    be successful in killing him!
I just hope mid-season finale will be
compensating enough for this one!BTW-isn't kai proving to be an awesome
    villain with passing week!

  3. This episode's distinct lack of Caroline had a direct correlation with how much I didn't enjoy it.

  4. Can you really believe caroline would go to have picnic with her mom when she just found out bonnie is alive! She would've started an active campaign to bring back bonnie ASAP!

Word. I don't like when either Caroline or Bonnie is absent from an episode. :)

  6. Kat graham is really killing it this season.

  7. They could have meet her halfway, with vamp speed or with an stolen car, but hey - the writers need to slip their 20 minutes of romance in every episode...

  8. "What will the consequences be if he makes a deal with the devil?" Hopefully his death. lol His death should've been like three years back. But then again, Liv really isn't that likeable for me, so i wouldn't want Tyler dying for some mediocre character. I mean they're not even in love, or at least he's not. Him "sacrificing" himself for her, would get such a big eye roll from me. I still want Liv dead, and Luke alive. lol That's not changing.

Delena- Loved that pancake scene. It was an adorable Delena moment. And i'm glad Damon brought down her ego level, b/c it needed to be brought down. I'm still pretty disappointed we didn't get to see inside the Gilbert House of 94.

Enzo- I was over him after 9 episodes of his first appearance. why he's lasted this long i have no clue, and now that he's lasted this long he has absolutely nooooo storyline. Smh now i'm just counting down the days.

I was very much missing Caroline this episode. And after two weeks, i completely forgot she wasn't going to be in this episode (B/c Candice was getting married when this episode was filmed, awww, i already said congrats to her), and i needed a fix of Steroline goodness. However, just Damon bringing up Caroline to Stefan, and saying "Be careful Stefan, you may think it's easier to play the big bad Salvatore, but soon you'll find yourself laying in the middle of the street talking to a stranger about your excessential crisis." Hahahaha I cracked up and i yelled, "He's talking about Jessica." LOL (and i paraphrased that line) That was good enough for me. Stefan being in denial, and then Damon brining it up again to Elena, and she being okay with it. Yeahh it's all good. That was my fix.

Agree on Delena. Would have loved to have seen inside the Gilbert house back in the day. I miss that house being on the show! I like Enzo but the writers have dropped the ball on his storyline in a major way. I guess I have kind of a small affection for Tyler. Of the more useless main cast members like Matt and Jeremy, Tyler's more likable for me. So I hope he doesn't die, but I don't know how the twins will get through this situation with both Liv and Luke intact. It'll be interesting to see how that all plays out.

  10. They got rid of the GH too soon, imo. (i mean hello it was OUR house too. lol) Hate Enzo, want him gone. He's had a few moments but that's long passed. I'd pick Matt and jer over Tyler anyday. But Tyler deserves to be on there longer than Liv and Luke, so i would want him to stay on for that at least. He's definitely more important (since he's been with us since the beginning) then both of them combined. I'm waiting for Jo and Kai's reunion out of everything for next week.

  11. I was looking for you earlier. Today i found this amazing Steroline video, and immediately wanted to share it with you. For me, it kinda made up for Caroline not being in the episode last light. Wanna see it?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sure. I'm not sure if you're allowed to post it here though.

  13. I'm still really mad Bonnie is stuck over there alone. And they keep giving way to much screen time to new characters that I can't stand. I don't like any of the new characters. And they've ruined Alaric. And until Elena gets her memories back, she's ruined, too.

  14. well, it's part of TVD, so i don't see why not. lol hold on.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That only goes to show how desperate the writers have become! They really think that all the audiences will fall in line and start drooling seeing delena scenes and forget about the plot-holes they are creating every episode!

Hope you like it. It put a big smile on my face. Lol so many good mommeats.

  17. They have gone through so much all these years.Although i don't want them as a romantic pair,i certainly want their relationship mended, whatever that may be.It pains me to see that one of the most functional pair in TVD is on the outs with each other! They need each other by one another's side, romance or not-it doesn't matter!
BTW,candice and paul have amazing chemistry together!

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is true. I've been shipping them for years. Even though they're not a couple (yet.) i love their friendship. I always have. I long for the day that it'll be both. But i also love this friend/romance angst awkwardness they have going on, it's a lot of fun to watch. I don't want the writers to drag it out too long b/c my heart is already struggling. lol Idk how long i can take this for. And i'm one of the "civil shippers". I do hope that i get a great steroline scene before this hiatus begins. It's bad enough i had to wait 2 weeks for a new episode, only to find out Caroline wasn't in it. Which technically makes 3 weeks, then to possibly have a short sweet steroline scene, then to turn it around to a very SAD steroline scene right before this month or so hiatus?!?! That's just cruel. lol

On another topic, I found this ADORABLE steroline video. (not the previous one i posted) Now i normally don't like when fans do these types of parallels. But it works soooo well with Steroline, and i thought it was sooo cute to throw Dalaric in there. lol This video is for AYDRIAN, but since i'm replying to you, i'll just put it here and hope he sees it too. lol (Joy you don't have to watch if you don't want to)

Ok, i had to do it separately, smh. anyway. This is the vid. for Aydrian. (Joy you still don't have to watch if you don't want to.)

  20. do you think The Twitches will die or just one?

  21. wanted more Delena in this episode but loved what we got except for the fight, i just want to know why we like Kai as a villain even though he's a murdering psychopath it's strange

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's ok.The video was very sweet and adorable.I just hope the writers do justice to both these characters, pair or not coz this is the only pair that is likable for me atm.

  23. My guess-Luke bites the dust, liv is safe for now due to her ongoing track with tyler, same goes for jo otherwise we will not see the dynamic between kai & jo & we all know kai's sticking around. And liz's fate seems in grave danger for this episode somehow-she will,be the one who will get in the crossfire of all these madness.

I expect just one or they both survive. They have made Luke less of a prominent character this season, which seems to put him more at risk. As Joy mentioned, with Liv having more of a plotline, I'd be surprised to see her go. I actually like both Liv and Luke and think they could be good continuing characters, but it doesn't look well for them both surviving.

I'm beyond impatient for Bonnie to return! The Bonnie torment and martyr complex needs to end already (though the latter will probably always be a part of her personality). Ric is a little disappointing lately...the Dalaric angst is disheartening, and actually, I thought Ric started the season strong and on a fascinating arc as a vampire. It's kind of a let-down that he's human again so quickly.

Kai is just so charismatic and irresistibly evil, he really fills that strong villain void well after last season being bereft of a believably threatening baddie. I'm loving him as an antagonist this season.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lol "this is the only pair that is likeable for me atm" understandable.

  28. I forgot to check disqus, so it's a little late, but I liked it. It was very well put together. Way too many people who make videos like this just slap together a bunch of clips in two minutes and add music to it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. ITA!! I only get "moved" by certain videos. Like they have to have a little extra Umpfh! ya know? I mean if they just slap it together and make it sloppy, i won't even get through the whol thing, i just move onto the next one. The worst is when you watch one and it's good, but the ending is complete crap, and it diminishes the entire video. It's like, awww why'd you have to go and do that? lol...But if it's really good/sentimental and it looks like they taken their time on it, if they leave a smile on my face, then i know it's one to watch a few more times. (or even add in my favorites)

  30. I don't get why people give Elena so much hate for thinking Damon just wanted to get Bonnie out because he want Elena to fall in love again. Keep in mind ..She lost every good memory of him.. so of course she would think that .. she only remembers/knows Damon like that

    ReplyDelete
  31. Virginia Fontana9 December 2014 at 16:06

While I could never hate Elena, I did find that leap of judgement on her part to be a bit much...however I can see the logic in your explanation as well. :)
