The Mentalist - The Greybar Hotel - Review

8 Dec 2014

The Mentalist Season 7 started with one purpose: being the season of Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon. In every episode, it seems we're exploring their relationship, looking for different sides of it - and them. In The Greybar Hotel, Lisbon goes undercover as a prison inmate in order to get a convict to turn on her boyfriend, Cole, who's the leader of a high-end car theft ring.

I liked how Jane gives advices to Lisbon about living in a prison. In the past years, we well know Jane spent some quite times behind a cell, surrounded by other prisoners. The tickling teaser was a hint about their relationship - are they sharing the shower in their house? Jane saying "I'll wait for you" when he's leaving Lisbon is the cutest thing.

Lisbon's name in the prison is Teresa McGregor and she's assigned to share the cell with Marie, the convict woman. The two both seem to have a lot in common. They're both grumpy, tough and hard-speaking. Also, they're both in love with their rispective boyfriends.

The distance is a hard factor between Jane and Lisbon and it's showed when both of them can't sleep at night - they're accustomed to sleep together and hugging, so I find it normal. Marie is hard to understand, and Teresa tries to gain her trust by taking her side in a fight, but that doesn't work. At the phone, Lisbon is hopeless, the girl is tough and it's hard to read her inside. What Lisbon didn't get is that Jane's already met that girl: it was her. This reference was brillant. "You wanna know I lowered her guard? I lowered my own." In fact, Jane left his con man be free from his past, and decided he wanted to love again - he decided he wanted to be with Lisbon. That was the key that brings them together. Two world apart, difficult to understand, who found each other by destroying their walls and opening to each other.

Lisbon changes her method: she decides to open with Marie. The scene where she confesses to her about her feelings for Jane and how they got together was so sweet. Lisbon was very honest. "I tried to run away. Patrick told me he loved me, and he didn't want me to leave. So I stayed." Also she admits she doesn't know for how long he's gonna be around, but as they said in the previous episode, they'll live for the moment.

Jane goes to visit Lisbon in prison and he explains he's working on a plan to make her and Marie break out. Marie has no choice: she's the one who can turn Cole. And even Abbott makes it clean when she screams it on her face!

CIA joins the investigation since one of Cole's contacts may be linked to something bigger, involving terrorists. Vega and Wylie share some good scenes together. The cup scene was priceless: no one can touch Jane's! That's when Stella Baker makes her appearence as Marine, on of the inmate whom Wylie and Vega are tracing on the phone. Just a little cameo, too bad.

Once they're out, Lisbon and Marie meets with Cole at a gas station. But staying with the two criminals, isn't easy for Lisbon, as she realizes Cole is more dangerous than she thought. Meanwhile, Jane and Vega arrive at the gas station where they find a man being shot and a message from Lisbon - very clever! Jane doesn't follow Vega's protocal, and goes to rescue his girlfriend all by himself, leaving some water bottles as clues to track him down.

Lisbon's cover has been blown up and Jane tries everything he can to rescue her, just in time for Abbott and the Task Force to save the day. Lisbon can take a breathe and drink some water. Back to the FBI, the ambitious Vega asks Cho to be more present on the field. Is there gonna be a trouble? Also, there's no rest for Patrick Jane as he learns that Erica Flynn is involed with one of Cole's terrorist contacts.

Did you enjoy Lisbon's centric-episode? Is Erica Flynn going to be a trouble for Jane and Lisbon?

  1. Thank you for the review, Diana! I enjoyed watching this episode very much. And besides all main parts I also loved the details (which is always a distinctive feature of The Mentalist): scenes with Jan's Cup and listening of calls were great. Without them the story would have been incomplete, from my perspective.
The last "Oh" was priceless. Oh yes, Erica's going to play again. Though I personally don't like her very very much (she lways seemed to me excessufully mincing), but this haircut suits her way better, I think, and I'm pretty sure she's no threat to Jisbon. And as much as I liked the promo, I think it's going to be fun! Can't wait!!!

  2. Thanks for reading :) yeah, totally agree. Detals are important to The Mentalist, a show where everything is putting on subtitles, and every clue is usefull! Erica won't be a problem, I'm sure :)

  3. thanks for the review diana !! nice episode , No one knew Cole was such a dangerous man !! and poor Jane looked really terrified when he arrived at the crime scene , the phone conversation was cute , and I think I felt more for jane than I did for lisbon at the end of the episode when he walked into the that scene unarmed and with no backup !! what bothers me for episode 3 after I saw the promo is the fact that jane seemed in one scene kind of tempted by erica , just me ,ohh god if it's the case and if he considered anything with her it's gonna break my heart into million pieces !! poor lisbon deserve better !!! thanks again diana

  4. I don't think he will be tempted...she might try something but he probably just uses her affection for him to solve the case (without actually kissing her).

  6. Good review. I love how in love they are. Jane's tea cup was priceless. I loved how Jane came to Lisbon's rescue all alone. I think the rookie is pushy.

Remember the episode from season 1, ep 14, "the Crimson Casanova" at the end of this episode Jane throws a drink in the womanizer's face and tells him that he has a good women there who knows who he is and loves him anyway, Jane will not risk Lisbon. But Erica got to him the last time, when she kissed him, he kissed her back and that scared and surprised him.

Thank you for the review, I loved all the Jisbon aspects and the fact that Jane would rather die than out live Lisbon (he will not again outlive the women he loves) Thanks needed to chat!
