Are they doing this because Helix is returning on the same night and NBC may be worried that both shows have similar audiences? NBC does on the SyFy network as well.

oh ok cool Constantine really does deserve this, i thought it would be a home run from the second it premiered so it surprised me that it didn't do as well as The Flash or Gotham
ReplyDeleteI liked the show in general but the story with new energy and so on, it kinda took time they could have used for other things. Back then it wasn't so important as it is today and anachronisms don't help in some cases.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the headline, I had a brief but intense fantasy that NBC was gonna air the last five episodes after The Voice. I hope 8/7c does well for them, rather than working against them. Especially considering those last couple episodes made Constantine become my #1 favorite NBC show. (I do like and love Hannibal, but it's so sickening I wouldn't describe it a "joy" to watch, lol)

ReplyDeleteYeah, I really think Grimm should be switched to 8/7c, then Constantine, then Hannibal... Grimm has never once been too dark or violent for 8/7c, at least in the 30 or so episodes I've seen (I stopped watching somewhere around the halfway point of s2)
ReplyDeleteI only watch it if I've eaten long enough ago for my food to start digesting and if I don't plan to eat for several hours. :) Generally it's on the actual stuff they show, but that mixed with what they leave for your imagination can get to be too much, as I tend to have a very vivid imagination, and it ends up being 10x grosser than it would be if they'd just show it. lol

ReplyDeleteYeah, Grimm's definitely lighter/more 8:00 friendly than Constantine, but Hannibal's not going to be premiering until spring/after Constantine ends its season.

ReplyDeleteSame here. Dracula was excellent, while Constantine's first few episodes were awful. I really resent NBC for canceling Dracula which was such a novel take on an old classic. They likewise screwed over the Dark Shadows revival in the early 90s. I was just a little tyke back but thankfully my mom let me stay up and watch!

ReplyDeleteAs long as the timeslot change helps it in ratings, I'm all for it and I'll wait another week for Constantine. Looks like NBC is trying to help it a bit and see if the ratings improve. I hope they do and it gets a S2, but still a shortened series- I like my shows shorter, tighter and more serialized.

ReplyDeleteThere are a few stand alone episodes that are only loosely connected to the very vague "rising darkness" serialized storyline. Originally they ordered 3 additional episodes and the direction seemed to be a full 22 episode season, which I think is a mistake. I think Constantine would do better on the Hannibal format of a shorter season and that way it wouldn't cost as much for NBC, as opposed to a 22 episode season.

ReplyDeleteIt's worth your time; though it looks like a children cartoon it is very deep and over time it has become one of the best television shows on the air - or online, since Nick pulled it from tv- as it gets character development right, and it isn't afraid of high stakes, delivering great drama and comedy along with the exploration of deep themes, such as trauma and recovery, gender equality, politics and religion, among many other that are explored with greatness

ReplyDeleteThe only space I believe is after The Slap finishes (estimated to be the first week of April). I'd assume Heroes Reborn will get that though so it can run through sweeps. Leaving Aquarius and Mr. Robinson as summer shows.
What happens to Dateline NBC then? I assume it be placed at 10/9c?
ReplyDeleteNBC have Sunday nights seemingly empty until April 5th, then nothing currently scheduled 8pm. Mysteries of Laura could end early (say March?) to open up a Wednesday slot, Thursdays at 8pm will be free from 9th April. Fridays now free at 10pm... Plenty of spaces to try things out for their remaining shows, but as you say pushing to summer is also very possible.

ReplyDeleteFor a show that's as good as cancelled, this move is bizarre. Why move Dateline? This move will have little effect for Constantine and probably reduce Grimm and Dateline's (assuming that's moving to 10/9c) ratings. Strange move all round.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a very bizarre move. It's a dark horror show with blood and gore. Moving it 2 hours earlier, from 10 to 8, means they'll have to seriously tone down the content.
ReplyDeleteI'll always agree with someone on Dracula if they're giving it a positive opinion, lol, but I disagree on Constantine's first few episode being "awful". I've enjoyed the series from the beginning as I did with Dracula. Dracula took a great story and twisted it around to actually give it a sense of "This could work in a TV series", but saddening, it was cancelled before we could actually see a Harker vs Dracula battle.

ReplyDeleteThey don't need to pick up the rest of the season. The first season could be 13 episodes and if it doesn't really conclude with the "Rising Darkness" plot, it could continue into a longer S2.
ReplyDeleteThere were some parallels to it, though. A new kind of human(a vampire) is trying to show a world a brand new idea(energy/light) while Dracula finally found his "light" in what appears to be the reincarnation of his deceased wife.
ReplyDeleteSeason 2 can't be ordered, written, filmed and be ready to air at the same time as Grimm and Hannibal for mid-season. Only chance they air together is 2016. And I doubt NBC will renew all 3 + not air Dateline on Fridays.

ReplyDeleteLike several people above me I have to wonder if they can get away with current tone of the show at 8 pm. The source material is already hamstrung just by being on a network show. I don't see how there can be anything left if they tone down the horror aspect as well.

ReplyDeleteIn this I can't agree. I know you can't extrapolate personal experience to all people, but it has some kind of value. Almost all my friends LOVE Dracula, and I have many friends. Yet, very few of them watched it live, Some DVRed it, and the great majority watched it online, as they watch all their shows. So, I would say that many people thought it was a brilliant series, but many of those people don't use to watch tv. Even then, its live ratings were better than anything else they put in the same time slot, and with almost no promotion at all.

ReplyDeleteI found Constantine's the pilot directionless, poorly paced and gimmicky. The second episode about the coal miners was a real snooze. Perhaps the last few episodes have improved but I stewed through several episodes before deciding the show wasn't worth the time investment.
ReplyDeleteDracula had me hooked from the very start. The major complaint I've read is that it was too slow, but I saved up all the episodes to blow through in a week of binge viewing so I didn't encounter that issue. I also didn't find fault with Dracula's re-imagining as Alex Grayson, American energy tycoon.
IMO all they should do is give Constantine a 9 episde long second wrap up season to tie everything up nicely and be done with it.

ReplyDeleteSince there already was a Constantine movie back in 04 (or 05, I don't remember) it already had SOME rep. So they just went with it (also indicating since they didn't call it Hellblazer)
I'd love to see Constantine go to theCW but the show would probably have to make some changes that I wouldn't like.
Matt Ryan and the guy playing Chas don't really look CW-ish.
Giving Constantine a 9 episode long wrap-up season that airs alongside Grimm until it's taken over by Hannibal would be a solid guess I'd say.
ReplyDeleteNot only would they then give the writers more time to give the show some closure but would also be able to establish friday as mystery night....aka. the only shows I'd watch on NBC (minus Blacklist) and yes....I consider Hannibal to be mystery, c'mon it's a show about a man that eats human flesh and chops people up while defying gravity!
For some reason no on-screen gore grosses me out anymore....ever since I binge watched Saw 1-7 (+ Wrong Turn 1-5, Hills Have Eyes and other slasher flicks.....don't ask, it was a weird night) I seem to be de-sensitized.
ReplyDeleteBut Hannibal has another sense of cruelty: the psychological aspect, he's not redeemable or mentally instable. He is completely stable, wich is the horror about it, he's a monster through and through
The thing is they can't pick up a back 9 anymore. They don't have time to write, film, produce and get everything ready in a month. But with this move I think the show still has a chance for a 2nd season if the new episodes do good.

ReplyDeleteI have only seen part of one of the Saw movies, it was gross but what I found the concept the most disturbing of all, so that's one franchise I'll never be familiar with, simply not my thing. I think the most extreme disgusting movie I've seen was a the new Evil Dead, I thought it had the right combo of onscreen gore (which was very gross) and stuff for your imagination to think about that I was on the verge of vomiting for most of it... The plot though was very intriguing to me, plus I was on a date with a guy... And as a guy I didn't want to seem like a total wuss, so I suffered silently, lol. Anyway, my point to all that is... Hannibal has, at times, been almost to the level of Evil Dead for me psychologically speaking. For everything combined, the gore you see, stuff you don't see or don't see fully, and as you said, Hannibal is just a scary effin guy. He's even made me paranoid of nice strangers I meet, what if they're a total sociopath who's gonna eat me? But the show is so beautiful in a strange way, and surreal, and the writing is so compelling I can't not watch it.

ReplyDeleteThat and canceling Community really hit me hard. There's only been a few shows that I've become literally upset when a network cancels a show. I'd add Joe Doe and M.A.N.T.I.S. into the list as well.
ReplyDeleteI never had a problem with Constantine, even from the beginning. Yes, the show had to find its legs, but I find that every season has to do this and the better shows find their footing in the fourth or fifth episodes.
ReplyDeleteWith Dracula, I find it to fall in the same boat as is typically the case. Dracula had to find its footing, but it only got stronger and stronger until the last episode which was a breathtaking finale.
