Great episode, really enjoyed it and can't wait for next week's conclusion! Poor old Danny is going to hit that Delete button isn't he? Missy and Seb are truly evil bastards for making the so-called dead believe in the 3 Words and putting them through all that guilt and emotion just to get them to sign up to become Cybermen!
Loved the performances from everyone, Peter and Jenna especially so in that super charger first quarter, they really pulled out the stops there imo! Bring on next Saturday :)
I was so hoping it wasn't going to be the Master. The preview copy had two scenes cut but it made the two hearts bit obvious still, so I was really hoping it was Romana... lol
Moffat is good at writing episodes or stories but i don't rate him as the lead writer for the series since he's took over the quality has dropped which just makes me feel bad for the actors because i've loved Capaldi's doctor
lol, at present 72% of people on the site disagree with you though. That's opinions for you though I guess ;)
I loved the episode, I thought it was exciting, the Cybermen were scary/creepy for the first time since the show has been brought back and the Master is truly evil and twisted.
So yeah, Missy is the Master. So not surprising at all. And she's enjoyable, but I don't think this new Master/Mistress can beat 10th Masters (both of them). Anyway, the episode was great, and just about to be one of the best of the season. Just hoping next episode won't be Mofat style all over again, give me a proper conclusion and not the ususal "f*ck it it's time lord wibbly wobly stuff". Oh and last but not least. What was it again with Clara? She was so determined to throw the key, but when it was not she broke as if she regreted it but finally she didn't but she felt bad still but not really? Come on. Stop her, please. I've suffered enough with her.
I think Danny will delete his memories since I think that is the first step to become a cyberman. He will probably face off against Clara because I think each cyberman is supposed to go after their respective loved ones. That's when Clara will probably say that Clara Oswald doesn't exist line from the previews alluding to the erased data.
That was awesome! But I'm not happy this seasons nearly over, it been so amazing.
I really need it to be Next Saturday Now! Lol at Missy kissing the Doctor and Clara's expression. I thought this was a very well written story, the idea of 3W and the Afterlife and the dead feeling whats being done to them after they die was quite interesting and I liked the look of the afterlife, very modern. Glad to finally learn something about Mr. pink, I've been wanting to know more about him for some time now.
Looks like iPad's never go out of style. I was kinda excited when Missy said she was a Lady Timelord, I was like awesome turns out shes the Master, which is cool too :)
That scene were Danny died was quite sad, this entire episode was so emotionallly moving. Great job, Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman were just brilliant!
Epic! The actress that played The Master is amazing in this role. This has been the best season of the show so far for me. I can't understand why so many people don't like it.
I understand the reveal that Missy is the Master is supposed to be surprising, but it felt more gimmicky than shocking. The Master's story was wonderfully concluded under John Simm's portrayal. To bring this character back like this is like remaking a masterful movie ... there's suspicion the sequel will fall short.
I don't know how the Doctor and Clara move past her betrayal once the Cyberman crisis is resolved. Betrayal can be forgiven, but can it be forgotten? I just hope the Doctor remembers what it was like to be so be overtaken by emotion that it causes you to (temporarily) lose control. Hopefully empathy will allow the Doctor to mean his words to Clara about how what they have been through together was more important than her desperate actions.
The final conversation between Clara and Danny was heartbreaking. How tragic is it to say the words "I love you" under those circumstances. Danny never meant it more because it was how he felt and the only way he could keep Clara from looking for him.
The follow up to this episode should be very interesting.
I am really enjoying Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. Danny can't hit delete because he and Clara are supposed to be the ancestors of the astronaut in the future. I am so disgusted that this season was so short. First we had to wait forever to get here and the trip was barely worth it. Yes, the stories have been good, but so few episodes? And what were the 3 w's? They never said.
it was only 1 episode shorter than a full season, plus we have the christmas episode next month... 13 episodes this year vs 10 we had last year vs 13 (plus 1 christmas special) we had for 2005-2008
That is the real answer. 3W stands for "The three words" those being Don't cremate me. It is the three words that they hear when examining the white noise.
Clara might already be pregnant so he could hit the delete button. I can see Clara v Cyberdanny and she uses that to try and fix him.
If you look closely at the start she has all these sticky notes like she is trying to find something out or she discovered something, but they do not touch on it again. It would also explain her phone-call when she could just say it when he got to the house, as well as her desperation. The Doctor even calls her a mess of chemicals, which is what happens when preggo.
No more questions, just the Horror, the Fun, the Adventure These 2 last episode will be.
I really loved the reveal of the Nethersphere, and Missy as the Master. The latter I had expected since the first episode, but the way she acted was awesome, The Mistress has fun/scary attitude.
The Dark Water was also a clever way to hide the Cybermen. Oh and that Swimming pool idea would be fun indeed.
The Sad stuff/ Danny's death, Clara reaction and post interaction with the Doctor was also really good, I like how that played out.
Now Danny is dead, but Nethersphere has detailed storage of his Memories. The only thing they need is a body. Wonder if they will bring him back.
But right now I just want to see some destruction of Earth, I mean you have all those Cybermen, it be a waste if they don't release any terror and destruction.
That's what I've been wondering, she's locked in with that one Cyberman isn't she. It either has to be the one Danny is destined for, or it's this Doctor Skarosa that supposedly discovered the 3 Words.
SKAROsa is an interesting name, could be Seb perhaps? Could it be that he is a Dalek we have met before, either ole Rusty from Into the Dalek this season, or perhaps Davros, or is this a red herring?
It's such a shame that Danny was so under used in the second half of the season, he really should have been in it more than just relegated to a couple of phone calls after The Caretaker imo. Unfortunately it's made a lot of people either not particularly care for him/believe in his relationship with Clara, or think that he's something he's not - a spy for UNIT or Missy. The character started with such promise and kinda got lost along the way as a plot device for Clara instead :(
I've not seen any more hate than usual, there's always a loud minority who dislike a current run - hell I was one of them back when Bonnie f***ing!! Langford became a companion. But then I got older and learnt that you just have to wait it out and the show will change again, lol. The show is doing very well viewing figures wise, the only episode polls on the internet that didn't seem to do too well were Moon and Forest afaik (but the general public loved those episodes) and Capaldi is adored by most :)
Capaldi is awesome, it took me a little while to get used to him - it generally does when a favourite Doctor of mine leaves the show, and Matt was a brilliant Doc - but I can't imagine anyone else in the role now. The season is technically the same length as usually, even though it is 12 episodes rather than 13 this year. The opener was 75 minutes long so that people could get used to a new Doctor and the last episode is an hour, which gives the season a run time of 535 minutes in total. 13 episodes at 41 minutes each is 533 minutes, so we're not missing out :)
The 3 Words were "Don't cremate me" which a Dr Skarosa supposedly found in the electromagnetic noise that TV's used to pick up. Whether this Dr SKAROsa is real or not (I wonder if it's Seb?) is not known, but it's pretty obvious that the words are not real since the 'dead' are only in the Matrix.
In the promo pics they seem to be friendly Cybermen rather than causing death and destruction, which is why I was leaning towards Missy being Romana building an army to defeat the Daleks and bring back Gallifrey. Now she's been revealed as the Master I'm stumped as to why the Cybermen are being so friendly, lol. I guess they will turn once all the graves have given birth to new Cybermen as Missy predicted?
Jenna and Peter gave it all in the betrayal scene didn't they, so intense! :)
Finally! The first good episode of the season! Hopefully the final two will be equally as impressive. I'm assuming that whatever happens to Pink in the afterlife is what causes Clara to leave during the Christmas special.
AGREED. I used to like Moffat's writing (despite there being problems with it), and I was excited to have him as a showrunner. I have clearly been young and stupid.
the Cybermen look tacky, they looked better in age of steel, may as well be made of tinfoil and the master is a good villain just not this one, she's being a boring and predictable character all series
While I wouldn't call it an obvious plot twist (even though I also suspected Missy was The Master) it's indeed not as surprising as the previous series-long arcs.
S1: Bad Wolf S2: Torchwood S3: Saxon S4: Stolen Planets S5: Cracks in the wall S6: River Song S7(B): The Impossible Girl S8: Missy
Now, that you mention Dr "SKARO"sa, I recall that Missy said something about not being a Dalek. But it could easily be a coincidence. Anyway, I hope they won't be bringing Daleks into the mix.
We see Clara talking to that Cyberman in the promo, I just can't make my mind up who is going to be in that suit though, lol. It could be Danny after he pressed DELETE, though as it has already stood up and seems to be sentient we have to assume that it's already inhabited I guess. I do wonder if it's old Rusty from Into the Dalek, would could be Seb's alter ego once he's out of the Nethersphere? Apart from him, I too would prefer not to have them introduced to the story, especially as there seems a lot to get through in the last hour as it is.
Yeah, the performances in this episode were pretty impressive. Capaldi, Coleman, Gomez, Anderson... The first part was so strong and powerful. Capaldi and Coleman are really a powerful duet. Anderson was impressive too. Danny, tears all over his face at the end, It was heartbreaking. It's a rare phenomenon, to see a man cry in a show. usually it doesn't go farther than tears in the eyes. Admittedly, Danny is having a particularly bad day. Still, I don't think he is going to press the button.
About Missy, I didn't want her to be the master either. I read the hypothesis somewhere at the begining of the season (not fair, didn't even had the time to think about it myself xD) but I didn't think about it a lot, needless to say I didn't like it. Even though, I like the idea of a Time Lord becoming a Time Lady and I admit that Gomez play it wonderfully.
Oh, and there is writen "DR Skarosa" on the water tank in the office Clara's locked in, so it's supposed to be his body in the water tank. (Since you were asking the question) If my eyes are not mistaken.
Yeah, poor Danny, his whole body was defeated when he was slumped in that chair at the end with that young kids face reflecting back at him in the iPad screen. I don't want him to press that button, but I think he will. He said last week that he likes to see he things around himself more clearly, they must be pretty sharply focused now for him and I have a feeling he wants to run away from them. Seb is being very effective at breaking him down :( Perhaps he will rebel as a Cyberman though, that would be interesting to see, he is a different kind of soldier after all.
Yep, that's the Dr Skarosa I mentioned down thread that we see Clara talking to in the promo when she says Clara Oswald never existed. I think it will most likely be Seb or Danny in there.
I'm just disappointed that the Master was the most obvious choice for Missy, after all the misdirection from the crew and cast that it would be someone unexpected and clever it was a bit of a doh! moment, lol. I think Michelle is good, it'll be entertaining and I have no problems with a TL changing gender either, but I just wish it had been a bit cleverer. I do like how wicked she has been made though, that definitely makes up for the End of Time, I personally couldn't bear how the Master was portrayed in that and have blocked most of that from my memory :p lol
I am not the only one, apparently. Wow ! lol It was the one time too many for this master. At least Tenth got his goodbye.
Maybe that's why they inclued the little boy (apart from knowing more about Danny). He is what tip the balance, seeing him on the screen, and what makes Danny hits the button in the end. And indeed Seb is effectively creepy, with his smile from ear to ear. ><
I think Clara is going to find a way to enter the neversphere - was it ? Maybe it's her body we saw but not "her". "Clara Oswald never existed" what?
Anyway, It doesn't tell us Missy final plans, the cybermen looked nice in the promo shoots (for a short amount of time at least), and why the hell did she "choose Clara well" ? We have a one hour episode left after all.
There is a lot to fit in that hour isn't there, UNIT have to feature too - with Osgood in 9's jacket, 10's shoes and 11's bow tie :) - and then the flying Cybermen too. I do wonder if part of this will be carried over to S9, like the immediate threat will be contained but Missy and/or Seb will get away and turn up again next year.
Yea that scene was great as well as the one after in the TARDIS. For me once she started to throw the keys in the lava, I knew it must be a dream, so I had a sigh of relief in that I can enjoy the scene without being afraid.
I understand it is a callback to earlier, but I was really hoping it wasn't cybermen. In the modern run at least, the cyberman behavior and design never has been as subtle elaborate or elegant as the plans leading up to their reveal. More often than not, as soon as they appear and start taking an active role onstage (primarily killing and torturously converting folks) the story always always goes downhill.
Ahh, you didn't see any of the promo material that they were in then?
I've just seen the second episode and I have to say that it's handled very well, the Cybermen are very different to normal. The creepy vibe is kept up very well :)
Reallly? Isn't Doctor Who only 45 minutes long? Does this mean the actual episode is 30min show and 30 min commercial? Thats the shortest finale I think in the history of NuWho.
The episode is about 56 minutes long, but BBC America has it in a slot for 90 minutes, so there will be about 30 minutes of adverts. Usually the episode about 45 mins and the ads are 15 mins, making it an hour in total, but I understand that BBC America also cut bits of the episode or run some scenes faster normal so that 20 mins of ads can be played.
For example, they cut he last shot short of Dark Water so that their audience didn't get to see the boy Danny killed appear in the iPad's reflection at the end of the episode. Which is kind of important for Death in Heaven really :s
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
MISSY IS THE MASTER

THE MASTER KISSED THE DOCTOR
DANNY PINK IS DEAD AND ABOUT TO BECOME A CYBERMAN
CYBERMEN EVERYWHERE
Sorry for that but damn, that episode blew my mind ! And made me afraid of one more thing, thank you Steven Moffat !
Haha I knew Missy was The Master, guessed that from episode one but it was great. But also a bit disturbing with the 3 words that made me shudder.
ReplyDeleteGreat episode, really enjoyed it and can't wait for next week's conclusion! Poor old Danny is going to hit that Delete button isn't he? ReplyDeletethe 3w literally meant the three words, aka don't cremate me. So yes that's the 3 w's
ReplyDeleteI understand it is a callback to earlier, but I was really hoping it wasn't cybermen. In the modern run at least, the cyberman behavior and design never has been as subtle elaborate or elegant as the plans leading up to their reveal. More often than not, as soon as they appear and start taking an active role onstage (primarily killing and torturously converting folks) the story always always goes downhill.
ReplyDeleteAhh, you didn't see any of the promo material that they were in then?
ReplyDeleteI've just seen the second episode and I have to say that it's handled very well, the Cybermen are very different to normal. The creepy vibe is kept up very well :)
Good to know.
ReplyDeleteReallly? Isn't Doctor Who only 45 minutes long? Does this mean the actual episode is 30min show and 30 min commercial? Thats the shortest finale I think in the history of NuWho.
ReplyDeleteYes the episodes all range from 45-48 minutes without commercials.
ReplyDeleteThe episode is about 56 minutes long, but BBC America has it in a slot for 90 minutes, so there will be about 30 minutes of adverts. Usually the episode about 45 mins and the ads are 15 mins, making it an hour in total, but I understand that BBC America also cut bits of the episode or run some scenes faster normal so that 20 mins of ads can be played.
ReplyDeleteFor example, they cut he last shot short of Dark Water so that their audience didn't get to see the boy Danny killed appear in the iPad's reflection at the end of the episode. Which is kind of important for Death in Heaven really :s
