Jane The Virgin - Chapter Five - Advance Preview

10 Nov 2014

The dad's out of the bag folks. Last week's Jane the Virgin ended on quite the tearful note, with Rogelio, revealing to Jane as she tried on wedding dresses that he was her father. Jane, rightfully, broke down after thinking her mother knew nothing of her father all these years but learned that Xiomara did in fact know who her father was and had been in contact with him. Only a few moments before had she been so happy to hear from Michael that he would keep the baby if she chose to, so to watch her crumble was disheartening. Jane couldn't cut everyone out could she? And that is where Chapter Five takes us.

Spoiler Free Tease: This week's episode picks up as Jane has decided to give herself some space from her mother. Jane always had a vision of who her father was, but to know that her mother knew and kept it from her is just too much to bare at the moment especially when she thought she and her mother were so close. So she moves in with Michael, a week before their upcoming wedding. (This has to end well, right?)Jane clearly wants to avoid her mother, but when her mother is her best friend, is this really possible? Xiomara is not taking Jane's silence so well either, but she's still there to help support Rogelio when needed. Last week, Rafael let Petra know that he knew that she was sleeping with his best friend Roman before he died. This week, he makes it pretty clear that he wants things to end between them, consequences with Jane be damned. Too bad for Rafael that both women in his life may not be so accepting of the fate of his marriage. Petra, and by extension her mother, are not about to let Rafael get away so easily, so what comes next should surely bring the drama.
Jane, naturally, curious as to who her father is, attempts to get know Rogelio this week to disastrous results. Not only does it go bad once, but the second time is just as messy, prompting what looks like do-over between the father-daughter pair on the horizon. Michael and his partner are still trying to get hot on the trail of who killed Roman, which requires him to speak to Rafael as they are investigating a murder that happened to his best friend at his hotel. The tension between the two over Jane is noticeable especially after Rafael has been clued in that Michael wants to keep his baby with Jane. After deducing at the last minute, before having arrest Petra and shatter his and Jane's world, that the suspect may be a bellboy they have got look at suspects within the hotel. Michael having to spend so much time in Rafael's vicinity is clearing getting under Rafael's skin. Finally, Poor Michael has to be the shoulder for Jane to cry on now that she knows that her mother has been keeping things from her, but how long does the fact that he has been keeping things from Jane stay hidden now that they are living together and she knows he is investigating Roman's murder? Plus, to top off that, his brother Billy is back in town and asking for money and trying to get to Michael through Jane by dating her coworker. (Erm, what?)
By hours end, expect to see the ice between the Villanueva women thaw out just a little, for there to be more blood shed on he carpets of the hotel(Yes, there's another murder), and for Petra to find a new way to keep Rafael married to her. For now...

Three Word Specific Teases: Jimmy Smits, Frisbee, Moisturizer.

The High: This week I really fell for Rogelio. Sure the guy appears to be selfish and shallow but he's still entertaining. Look closer and I swear you see something so much more than what it appears to be. He's gone through such great lengths to see Jane and to watch him grandstand to bond with her is equal parts awkward and adorable.I like that the writers aren't forcing a connection between the two of them so easily. They appear to practically have nothing in common, but you can't help but smile when he gets so excited to see her. You can tell he is generally excited to get to know this extension of him, however misguided his intentions might be.

The Gripe: Didn't Jane decide she was going to sue Luisa about 3 episodes ago? What's going on with that? Another week, no mention of anything court related. But for some reason Bridget Reagan's character is still around. I got flack on twitter for griping on it last week, but sadly it was more of the same this week. Her character is around, but for what reason it remains unclear. I have a slight theory that she may the drug dealer that Michael and his partner are looking for, but it's just a working theory. Until then I'll continue to be annoyed that it looks like Jane's plan to sue has been cast by the wayside for the moment, and that Luisa has spent two weeks MIA, yet Bridget Reagan is still around, not doing anything.

Overall Thoughts: Another Solid episode. While it wasn't my favorite, it was still good. It had some great moments with Rogelio and Jane. While others things happened, nothing that felt as interesting as the final minute or so. It'll be interesting to see where Jane lands on raising the baby after this week's episode for sure. I think in the end that was the focus of the episode, Jane wants so much for this child to not grow up like she did, but is it really avoidable? We'll have to wait and see.

Chapter Five airs this Monday at 8c on The CW.

Do you think that Rafael will really be able to leave Petra? Should Jane be mad at her mother? Are you wondering what happened to Luisa yet? Who do you think murdered Roman, it has to be someone we know right? Sound off below!

About the Author - Winston Mize
Winston is a 24 year old goofball, born in the north, and currently living in the south. He loves TV.... for some it's coffee, for him it's TV talk that gets his day going. He wants to be a screenwriter, and watches some of everything. You name it, he's probably checked it out. And he would like you to know that it is okay for a 24 year old to play with action figures... well, he does anyway.

Mate no offense but I don't get why you keep complaining over Luisa and Rose? Even at amature level of story telling, a writer is taught that each character must appear as they have a full life of their own. Yet I get the impression you only want them around if it is about the law suit or not at all(?). It reads as they need to be 1 dimensional to be relevant in your view to be frank and it is weird to read that in semi-lenghty reviews. Like nevermind one is the sister and another the step mom of Rafael so there are important familial relationships there. Rafael is the male lead (more so than what's his face boyfriend imo), so of course he will have some supporting characters as well and some background fleshed out. There is also obviously something up with the dad, and the whole stepmom that was/is involved with Luisa also got some drama and shit behind it. They spent sometimes just 2-3 minutes on setting up clues and dropping hints towards these things per episode so it is not like it is overtaking the show. I don't like story lines coming out of nowhere so I appreciate they are setting up stuff and giving clues into the past of Rafael's family. Not really a fan of either actresses but I don't feel like seen enough of them to judge truly tho

I think it is quite clear that they are building towards something and also giving us some information on the past of Rafael and his family that is probably tied to that big kingpin (that seems to be heavily hinted to be Petra's mom, Wouldn't surprise me if the dad works for her either or something is up with Rose marrying the dad despite having been a succesful lawyer. It seems not quite in character for her to want to be a 'simple' trophy wife based on what little we know)

  3. I adore this show beyond reason. Alba gets on my nerves because of her obsession with her granddaughter's hymen but she means well. I love everyone else especially Luisa and Petra. This show keeps me glued to my set for the entire hour. I prefer our heroine with Michael but Rafael is becoming more interesting.

  4. No offense taken. And I would agree with you that each character needs to be more than one dimensional, but the character as of now is one dimensional to me. What do really know about her? What does her presence actually add, especially when she only says one or two lines that can be said by anyone. Especially when she was brought in by way of Luisa with the twist of it being her step mom and ex flame. I'm not saying she only needs to be around in those two instances, but she is little more than a wallflower at this point and it seems like a waste to me. But it's my opinion. In a an episode chocked full of character development her two scenes felt they were forced to include her presence and gave her something to do.

  5. I agree with the theory that there is more behind Rose than meets the eye - when she and Luisa were in the hotel room, she whistles a tune at the end of the scene. I think its a hint, maybe even something that will identify the drug delaer, maybe?
And another thing that is bothering me, and I havent noticed being discussed yet - in the previous episode Michael's partner asks Rafael if Zaz had a girlfriend. She knows it's Petra, as she has been watching her for the past few days, so why would she hinted this to Raphael? It's not really professional either. I think there's more to her than meets the eye too. Just a thought :)
