How To Get Away With Murder - The Sequence Of Events With All The Flash Forwards Compiled + VIDEO

16 Nov 2014

With the winter finale of ABC's How To Get Away With Murder fast approaching, I decided to spend a Saturday afternoon skimming through the 30 flashbacks and flash forwards the last 8 episodes have provided, then compile them into one video, in (what I think is) the order they belong in.

The resulting video is 40 minutes long, and includes the last 4 minutes of Thursday's eighth episode to help provide context. This means that from the 8 episodes so far, nearly one full episode's worth of time is made up of timeshifted scenes.

While the video doesn't provide any additional answers, it provokes many additional questions. The sequence of events we've seen leaves out some massive holes too, which I wasn't previously aware of until I put the video together.

You can see the video below. I've not altered any of the flashbacks at all, aside from removing some of the regularly seen intros with the cheerleader flipping, the bonfire, and the coin being tossed. This is the case among the first of the flashbacks because those clips make things confusing. For each scene I've also added the episode number, and scene number in the video. FF stands for flash forward, FB stands for flashback. It's interesting seeing how muddled the creative team have made these scenes, so hopefully these notes on the video will help you out.

My understanding of the sequence of events on the night of Sam's murder is as follows. Text in bold is assumptions and theories I've come up with based on the content of the timeshifted scenes.

Before Lila Stangard's murder

In the months prior to Sam's murder, Lila Stangard and Rebecca spend a lot of time together, doing drugs, drinking, and talking about sex.
She then befriends one of her teachers, beginning an affair. Rebecca is made aware of this by Lila.
Sam later ends the affair, and a broken Lila decides to go to the Keating home with the intent on showing photos of Sam to Annalise, but is rebuffed by Bonnie.

On the night, but prior to the murder

- Rebecca is caught conspiring with Nate by Wes. Connor arrives, and Rebecca leaves for the Keating house with the intention of obtaining Sam's phone data with the software Nate provided. Laurel arrives shortly - after, having just ended things with Frank.
- Asher is getting himself in the mood for the bonfire and a party at his house when Michaela stops by, and steals the trophy. Asher doesn't realize the trophy is missing until some time later.
- At the Keating house, having just fired Bonnie, Annalise tells Sam she's having DNA samples obtained from all the males that had anything to do with Lila Stangard. Annalise leaves the house shortly after.
- Michaela heads to the Keating house to cash in the trophy for the upcoming exams. Unable to find Annalise, she leaves the trophy in the room where the murder occurred, and going upstairs or another part of the house to look for her.

The murder

- Rebecca sneaks into the Keating house, and is caught by Sam. In a rage, either because he sees her hacking his computer, and/or because of what Annalise just told him before leaving the house, Sam runs at Rebecca who uses the trophy Michaela just placed to kill Sam with a blow to the head.

Moments after the murder

- Michaela, still at the Keating house and heard or saw Rebecca kill Sam with the trophy she had just cashed in.
- Wes arrives at the Keating house with Laurel and Connor, having driven in Connor's car to get there, chasing after Rebecca. They find Sam's body, with blood still running indicating he had been killed moments earlier. Rebecca is covered in blood.
- Wes takes Rebecca upstairs and cleans the blood off her.
- Michaela remains in shock as Laurel tries to comfort her. She still has her engagement ring on her finger.
- Asher, now aware the trophy is missing, bangs on the Keating house door, but doesn't enter. He gives up knocking and walks toward the library following a text from Michaela that she sent to throw him off by saying she was at the library.

Deciding what to do next

- Wes takes Rebecca to a hotel room and leaves her there, as Michaela, Connor, and Laurel wait in the woods near the bonfire for Wes to return.
- While on his way back, Wes stops by the house again to get the trophy.
- The group cannot decide on the next move - to leave the body where it is or to dispose of it - so they toss a coin, with the option to dispose of the body winning.
- Before the group leave, they spend time at the bonfire, taking photos of each other and posting them online to give themselves an alibi.

Moving the body

- The group return to the Keating house, and roll Sam's body up in a rug. They clean up the crime scene and the trophy.
- As they carry the body out of the house and to Connor's car, their plan is nearly foiled by a police officer, with Michaela saving the situation. Michaela's ring cannot be seen on her finger.
- With the body in the car, the group take a long route to a gas station to buy lighter fluid and matches.
- On their way to the gas station with the body, the group nearly run down Asher, who is on the phone to Bonnie. She is asking him to come to her place.
- At the store, Wes goes in and buys the lighter fluid and matches along with other goods to mask the purchases.
- Bored in her motel room, Rebecca prank calls 911.
- Wes also buys a burner phone in the store, and calls to check up on Rebecca.
- Wes returns to the car, and the group drive to the woods.
- Asher and Bonnie have sex. Asher comments to Bonnie about not being at the bonfire, and scrolls through the photos the others had posted online.
- Annalise arrives home and discovers Sam isn't there. She notices the rug is missing, and assumes the worst. She rings Bonnie who tells her she hasn't seen, or is with, Sam.

Burning the body

- The group carry the body from Connor's car into the woods.
- Frank calls Laurel right when a couple sneak into the woods to make out. They are spooked by the phone ringing and move away. Laurel then tells the group about her affair with Frank.
- The group lay the body out and set it alight.

Disposing of the body

- The fire is just about out when Frank calls Laurel again. Frank says she will do anything for her.
- Once the fire dies down, Connor smashes the remains into pieces to make them easier to bag and transport.
- The group load the remains into Connor's car.
- Michaela notices her ring is gone, and return to search for it, with the others watching on.
- After failing to find the ring, Michaela is tasked with returning the trophy to Asher's house. She is too distressed to do so, so Laurel volunteers.

After the disposal

Laurel goes to Frank's place, and holds him to his earlier word that he would do anything. She gets him to return the trophy to Asher's house.
Wes rushes back to Rebecca, where she is still in her hotel room. He tells her that the job is done.
Connor goes to Oliver's house and wakes him up. The time is 6:00am. He tells Oliver that he has screwed up.

So that's the sequence of events as I understand them. There are many, many questions that haven't been answered yet, so let's run through a few of the larger ones:

- Where did Bonnie go after being fired?
- Where did Nate go after meeting Rebecca?
- Why were Connor and Laurel going to Wes's house?
- How did Wes get Rebecca to the hotel?
- Did Michaela witness or take part in Sam's killing?
- Did Michaela lose her ring at the Keating house, or at the disposal site, or somewhere else?
- Where was Asher going before he went to see Bonnie?
- Did Rebecca's 911 call raise any police suspicion before Wes returned?
- Why did the group choose that location to meet initially, as well as to burn Sam's body?
- Where does Michaela go after the night has ended?
- Why does Connor go to Oliver's house?
- What does Annalise do after she knows something has happened to Sam?
- Are Sam's remains still in Connor's car?
- Is Frank able to return the trophy to Asher's house?
- We don't know how long anyone took to do anything because of the lack of clocks, aside from when Connor wakes Oliver.

I could go on, but that's plenty of questions for now. I'm pretty convinced my order of events, and theory on who killed Sam is correct. The gaping holes in the timeshifted scenes are there for a reason, so I'm betting they're the catalyst for the second part of the season.

For now, leave your thought and theories in the comments below! Be sure to tell us if you think the order of events can be reinterpreted.

Also, please share this article and video using the social media buttons on the left of your screen! SpoilerTV is the first and only site to have compiled, reordered and analyzed the timeshifted scenes, so please help us share it! It's very much appreciated.

Thanks for reading, watching, sharing and commenting! Bring on next Thursday!

  1. "Why were Connor and Laurel going to Wes's house?"

Didn't Connor say they were going to do a study group at Wes's house and then he said that he could've said to him that he lived in the ghetto? (loved that last past lol)

    ReplyDelete
  2. I thought this as well, but wasn't Michaela also in this study group?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Nope. Connor said that three's enough (in the house when he handed out the previous exam paper)

    ReplyDelete
  4. Nope, Connor said that 3 was enough.
At first, Michaela didn't want to be part of it and then as soon as Connor he had the copy of the exams from last year she wanted to be part of it... then as I said, Connor said 3 was enough.

  5. Yeah, just went back and watched it. I knew for sure Asher wasn't in, lol

    ReplyDelete
  6. I don't think Rebecca killed Sam. It's just too obvious. I'd say either Annalise or Bonnie did it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Nope but I just recalled that Laurel wasn't there too. She was supposed to be but she was late because she was meeting Frank's girlfriend...

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yeah, I can't shake the fact that it seems too easy. You could say the same thing for who killed Lila as well. The creative team have everyone in a knot with this

    ReplyDelete
  9. The big twist would be that Sam killed himself or something....
    It would so unexpected.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The writers were amazed that the actors didn't figure it out before. they say "it was under your nose".

    ReplyDelete
  11. Now THAT would be a shocker, but why would Rebecca admit to it?

    ReplyDelete
  12. She didn't admit to it. The way I interpret that scene she was telling Wes she would say she did it to save him.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Maybe because she blackmailed him and she didn't expect him to kill himself ; she felt really bad and said she did it... I mean if she did blackmail him, she'd be the reason why he would've killed himself.

    ReplyDelete
  14. But why would the Keating 5 dispose of the body in the way they did without telling anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Because maybe Rebecca also told them that she'd killed him without telling them the details... I don't know......... I feel like I'm at court and being interrogated by prof Keating herself LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Here's a question if Rebecca does kill Sam why are the others calling themselves murderers? Their acomplesies for burning the body and getting rid of the evidence but if Rebecca killed Sam and Wes laurel and Connor had just arrived why would laurel and Connor help Wes help Rebecca when honestly they didn't have if they had just arrived at the house

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ha! Exactly what I hoped would happen! I felt like a detective putting this together

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well this article does look like it was done by one!
Really well structured, all the facts are in it.. Well done on this one!

    ReplyDelete
  19. That caught my attention too, but I honestly didn't know what to make of that. No one mentioned the police or doing the right thing - it was all about getting rid of the body

    ReplyDelete
  20. :-) thanks! Was a great way to fill in a Saturday afternoon!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Great, great work Jimmy. Rebecca is the person I'm most sure didn't kill Sam, strangely, because of the flashforward where she told Wes that she killed him etc. The entire scene plays out as if she is telling Wes that she'll take the fall for Sam's murder because she's probably gonna go down for Lila's anyway, and there's no point in the real murderer (likely one of the four) going down here.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thank you Jimmy. But I'dont have time to watch all the regular shows I watch not even to mention this recap. But I don't have to sleep this weekend and catch up.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Seriously, thanks a lot for doing this! Amazing! They should air something like this before the mid-season premiere...

    ReplyDelete
  24. why would connor, laurel and michaela would cover the murder for rebecca? they weren't involved in murder in any ways.
okey wes would cover for rebecca but why other student would do that?

    ReplyDelete
  25. My pleasure! Yeah, even if they did something at the end of the season to tell the fans what they were missing all along

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah I'm with you there. It's almost as if she's guilty of something else we haven't seen yet so she sees herself as having nothing to lose, hence she's happ to take the fall for Lila and Sam's murders

    Thank you for doing this.

My theory is that Sam caught Rebecca trying to hack his computer and then tried to kill her. He pushed her one the floor, then Connor, Wes and Laurel arrive exact in the same moment and in the panic Wes takes the trophy and kills Sam to save Rebecca. Which also explains why Rebecca was covered in his blood.
    Can't wait for next week!

  28. Why were Connor and Laurel going to Wes's house?

They were in for the study group. Maybe Michaela goes to Annaliese house and finds everyone there, she sure was most freaked out.

Why did the group choose that location to meet initially, as well as to burn Sam's body?

I think they were in the woods, nearby the bonfire so the smell of a burning body can dissapear agains the big fire.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Really good catch. So Michaela lost her ring at the house. She definitely didn't have it on when she threatened to call Annalise when the security guard was questioning them. I find it interesting that Michaela and Connor are the two that freaked out the most, while the two less put together characters kept their cool. Thank you for doing this. It was like an episode on its own. I didn't realize the flashbacks were that long until now.

    ReplyDelete
  30. or Michaela could've killed Sam when she saw him going after Rebecca while the rest walked in on it, hence her mental breakdown and their involvement.

    where is the video???

    ReplyDelete
  32. I thought Connor and Laurel were going to Wes' place to have a study group?

I thought Bonnie went to Asher's place?

I thought Connor when to Oliver's house because he didn't know where else to go?

Anyways, those are what I thought. I might be wrong. But I felt pretty sure about then until I saw you asking. So I thought there might be some twists I missed out.

  33. Video is showing fine for me.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wes is starting to creep me out with all his talk of protecting and how he seems to understand Annalise's way of thinking. I hope he doesn't turn in some weirdly psychotic boyfriend like in the movie "Heathers"

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm not entirely sure how American law works in that regard, but in some countries when you conspire to prevent a crime from going public or from being discovered by the police you can be prosecuted for it along with the original author. That's why I guess they call themselves murderers.
As for Wes, Laurel and Connor, no idea, honestly. It could be they were just so struck by the whole situation they got caught in the moment and never exited the house when they had the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great article Jimmy, love it, and thanks for taking the time to make the video!

  38. Didn't they BURN it? What the hell do you guys mean?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes they did burn it but then they smashed the charred remains into smaller bits to fit into garbage bags. That was when Connor looked like a man possessed.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Glad you enjoyed it! I'm fairly certain Michaela didn't have the ring on when confronting the cop. It's dark but it's also a big ring so odds are you would have noticed it in the shot. I'm wondering whether Michaela heads back to the house to search for it when the night is over

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah definitely possible and something I've thought about but in my mind Sam and the others, as well as the room would have shown more signs of a struggle. The body was so clean and tidy so leads me to believe that isn't the case. Also Rebecca explaining herself to Wes - she wouldnt have needed to do that if the group was already there

    ReplyDelete
  43. Agreed. Rebecca is the obvious choice. And confessed but the confession was before the commercials said the answer would be revealed. I just feel that's a plant. They want to catch us saying OMG no way!

Really Bonnie is an obvious choice too now because she had just been fired. Motive. She is my pick. But I feel like shonda would want a shocker.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I feel Rebecca thought she did it. Maybe he saw her bugging his house for Nate and things got unruly. Perhaps they pushed and shoved and Sam fell. Rebecca panics but someone else comes in to finish the job. Could Bonnie have come back to beg for her job? She prob blames him now. Bonnie runs out quick for an allibi? Wes arrives sees the blood tries to be rebeccas hero. Maybe Michaela heard Sam confess to killing Lila....she could have been in a dif room. So maybe the whole reason they get rid of the body is because they get their client off at any cost-- that's what a defense attorney does. And if Sam is MIA it would make him guilty of the Lila murder but if the police come and investigate finding Sam dead....they might never suspect him of the killing and Rebecca the loose cannon could be found guilty in the trial which is wrapping soon.

    ReplyDelete
  45. After watching this compialtion I'm more confused than ever...And only one question bogs my mind -- what the hell is Annalise talking about over the phone with Bonnie? Because clearly the murder scene is all cleaned up - could it be another murder for 1B?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Next week will be so epic!!!

  47. If you have any adblocker on, turn it off and you'll see it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ah ! Makes me even more excited !

    ReplyDelete
  49. I noticed no mention of the pregnancy. With all the build up, is it really Sam's baby? Was Lila going to tell Annalise about the Sam AND the pregnancy or just the relationship?

Why the heck did Annalise tell Wes about the pregnancy? So he would tell Rebecca, and Rebecca would... What? Wes thinks the cop is still Annalise's boyfriend. Did Annalise put him up to working with Rebecca?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Annalise noticed the rug missing which is why she called Bonnie asking where Sam was.

    ReplyDelete
  51. from the flashfowards, Laurel Connor and Michaela got into an argument in the Woods that indicated they trusted Wes not to turn on them and call the police but that they didn't trust Rebecca not to try to convince him to do it. So I think that the Others are doing it to protect Wes and Wes is doing it to protect Rebecca. I don't necessarily think Rebecca killed Sam, I think she wants to take the blame because she knows she will probably go to jail for her friend's murder anyway and wants to protect Wes. To me, that "confession" in the hotel room sounded like a speech she was planning to tell to the police.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't think Wes had anything to do with the murder it looks like Wes,Connor, and Laurel got there after he was killed and he didn't have any blood on him but Rebecca did so I was thinking Rebecca and or Nate killed him they both have motive I'm not sure about Michaela because she's the one with the trophy for now I know we haven't seen Nate in the flash forwards yet but I really do believe we'll see him there.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I was wondering why Michaela was freaking out like she did obviously she would if she saw a murder but it might be worse if she's the one who did it but I really don't see her doing it unless she wanted to save Rebecca if that's the case couldn't they just of called the police? It could've been self defense.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Honestly, in the flash forwards Connor looks like a sociopath psycho killer like he did on Twisted and when he was cutting Sam's body it looked like he was enjoying it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The way Rebecca is covered in blood and Michaela being so freaked out i think that maybe Michaela being Michaela went to Annalise house and found Sam attacking Rebecca and she uses the trophy as a weapon to hit him but not to kill him (which she did and that's why she is like that), then the others came and see the mess and try to come up with a plan.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Annalise told Wes about the pregnancy because he would have needed to know in order to better defend Rebecca in court (all the others would have learned of it eventually as well). Annalise's reasoning for Wes not to tell Rebecca were legitimate enough for me

    ReplyDelete
  57. We need a who killed sam poll now after watching this!!!! I just watched a second time.

Of note for me was Bonnie's demeanor when Lila knocked at the door. And Lila's words. He can't hide it anymore. Did Bonnie confront Sam?

I thought the actress playing Lila did a poor job of being worked up and crying esp w Rebecca on the roof. I didn't notce till I saw it with all the fluff cut out. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Wes definitely was more involved than Connor, Laurel and Michaela because (it's dark a lot so i"m not 100%) but he was the only other one, besides Rebecca, with blood on him. So i'm more inclined to say he killed Sam who was probably attacking Rebecca.

Obviously, Michaela's upset because she brought the murder weapon into the house but she shouldn't have been THAT upset. SO i'm still lost on her, Connor, and Laurel's connection. But they must have done something otherwise they wouldn't have burned the body in concern of their DNA being on the body.

Asher and Bonnie seem too random and irrelevant to not actually mean something. I like the idea someone said about Bonnie needing an alibi. Although if she did I feel likethe students would have mentioned it.

Also what happened to the flash drive Nate gave Rebecca to get Sam's info. That's major evidence.

Finally where was Annalise while Sam was being murdered? With Nate? who told her about the flash drive he gave Rebecca?

(Sidebar does anyone else feel that Wes and Rebecca as a couple are too forced? covering up murder for someone you met 6 months ago seems like a lot. Plus they kiss at awkward times.)

This was great though! I loved it! Thanks!

  59. We already have a Who Killed Sam poll here >> http://www.spoilertv.com/2014/11/poll-who-killed-sam-keating-on-how-to.html

Yeah Bonnie had a chip on her shoulder when confronting Lila. Probably because she knew about the affair and felt compelled to rebuff Lila to protect Annalise. Bonnie could very well have killed Lila as a result, and framed it on Sam

    ReplyDelete
  60. So many questions, so few answers! Glad you enjoyed the post!

Where Annalise was is probably the most important question. It'll be interesting to see what she was doing all night, as well as prior to the murder

    ReplyDelete
  61. Also i dunno Why Bonnie will know where Sam was when Annalise fired her hour ago and told her to leave and Sam was already gone when the two where talking and why would he be with her?.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Dont forget that Annalise didnt really leave the house after the phone call with the DA. She walked upstairs. So this creates another question: When and Why did Annalise leave the house?

    ReplyDelete
  63. My opinion is that michaela murdered Sam. I think Sam was about to do something to Rebecca and that michaela walked in on it and defended Rebecca. She had the trophy in her hand so it was the obvious reaction to hit him with it.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I can only think of one sequence of events that would make sense:

    1. Rebecca sneaks into the Keating house and is trying to load the flash drive, when Sam catches her in the act and pounces on her
    2. Michaela walks in with the trophy, hears Rebecca screaming, sees Sam strangling her yelling "you little bitch" or words to that effect - and Michaela hits him over the head with the trophy, and Sam falls to the side
    3. Michaela is busy asking a shaken-up Rebecca if she is OK, and then we get the cliched horror-movie scene of the supposedly dead baddie rising up in the background - and Sam now pounces on Michaela, beating the crap out of her, with Rebecca trying but not succeeding to help
    4. Then the gang of Wes, Laurel and Connor arrive - Laurel and Connor jump on Sam to save Michaela, while lovestruck Wes goes for Rebecca first to check she is OK, *then reaches for the trophy and delivers the fatal blow to the back of Sam's head while there's the scuffle with Connor and Laurel.

Dunno why I haven't read this scenario anywhere before, but it does seem to be the only way where they'd ALL be involved and implicable in her murder. and it would explain:

    1. Why Michaela is so upset and clutchign the fireplace - cos she struck Sam (though not fatally) AND she was just roughed up.

    2. Would explain why Rebecca would tell Wes she wants to confess for *his* sake

    3. Why the others would worry about Rebecca turning on them - as she's the only one who didnt actually attack Sam at some point

    ReplyDelete
  65. I don't think so because Sam's only got a single blow to the head, his clothes and the clothes of everyone else, and the room itself, don't show signs of a struggle. That suggests to me it's a single, clean blow to the head, more likely than not, in self defence

    ReplyDelete
  66. The only problem I have with that theory is why would the others stick around and share the blame with her? If I am Connor or Laurel I would be gone or calling the ops the instant I realized what was happening.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I just want to throw this out there.. When Wes was cleaning Rebecca, if you are saying that Rebecca killed Sam... the blood spatter seems to be a bit off since if she was the one who knocked him off with the trophy she wouldn't have that kind of spatter which is all over her face. She must've been near him while the killer was bashing Sam's head off...

But another idea would be Wes was the one who killed Sam. I mean, his flat has freakin scratches on the wall and he seems to be okay with it. Kind of a psychotic angle..

  68. Nobody seemed to notice that the scale of Lady Justice's statue is missing, so even if the engagement ring is in the house and Micheala finds it later (if hypothetically she comes back to search it), they left behind the scale. So Micheala would be a person of interest in Sam's disappearance =) I'm still thinking that Rebecca as the murderer is a too easy answer =)

  70. Well, the first blow by Michaela might have been too feeble - I don't know ... I do think there's a "fake-out" where we think he's dead due to Michaela, but Wes ultimately deals the fatal blow. Oh well ... only 5 days to go to see how right or waaay off I am!!

Great job on the compilation vid, by the way! I wonder if next week's ep will replay ALL that again - in which case I hope it's a 2 hour ep, as a 1 hour ep full of all the flashforwards would only give us about 10 minutes of new footage!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Since Sam and Bonnie have had a relationship before Annalise is assuming Sam went to Bonnie.

However we're assuming that Annalise doesn't know what happened since in the promo for next week Sam has his hands around Annalise's neck. So I think she knows someone killed Sam after maybe Annalise leaves the house.

    ReplyDelete
  72. But Bonnie told her about Sam kissing her because she didnt like him, she likes Annalise ot that's what i got from that part right?.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Let's not forget about the episode 9 promo. We see Sam chasing Michaela up the stairs where she then hides, and calls Wes. Sam finally gets into the room, but we don't know what happens after that. Also featured in the promo is Sam from a low angle, probably signifying that he has someone pinned down. Right after, we see him choking (or at least it seems like it) Annalise. Some things to consider.

    ReplyDelete
  74. If it was just about defending her in court, why tell him before the others? She *knows* he's gonna tell her, yet asks him not to? Wes even said something about how Rebecca was doing what Annalise wanted.
