Arrow - The Magician - Review

5 Nov 2014

Arrow, “The Magician,” was written by the team of Wendy Mericle and Marc Guggenheim and directed by John Behring. The episode really sets the stage for the new big bad – Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable) while establishing some new dynamics now that Thea (Willa Holland) is back in town.

We pick up right where we left off with Nyssa (Katrina Law) nocking an arrow at Oliver (Stephen Amell) and demanding to know where Sara is. She’s instinctively realized something is wrong and immediately realizes from Oliver’s fact that Sara is dead – clearly, something anticipated when you are an assassin. From the outset, Nyssa is single-mindedly positive that Malcom (John Barrowman) is to blame. Malcom points the finger at her father and Ghul’s cold assertion at the end that Sara had never been one of them seems to support his lack of attachment to her. Is Nyssa holding on to her conviction that it was Malcolm because she doesn’t want to believe it was her own father? If it is her father, she has sworn an oath to kill Sara’s killer and then she would have to kill her own father…

Nyssa does change her mind about Laurel (Katie Cassidy) as the episode progresses. At their initial meeting in the cemetery, Laurel refuses Nyssa’s condolences, insisting that Nyssa is the reason Sara is dead. Laurel blames Nyssa for “awakening the darkness” in her sister, but Nyssa insists the darkness was already there. All she did was protect and love Sara. Laurel’s bitterness causes Nyssa to lash out and tell Laurel she’s not fit to wear Sara’s jacket – a jacket that had been a present from Nyssa. However, by the end of the episode, Nyssa has watched Laurel and seen the anger she too feels over Sara’s death. Laurel has acknowledged Nyssa’s loss. When she comes to say goodbye to Laurel, she tells her that she is still committed to making good on her promise. She also supports Laurel’s training. She says “the strongest metal is forged in the hottest fire.” Laurel takes offence, but it’s a compliment. Nyssa is saying that Laurel’s anger will make her strong and will support her through her training to make her physically as well as mentally strong.

We see Oliver really stick to his promise not to kill. I was surprised to see Diggle (David Ramsey) support Nyssa’s commitment to kill Malcolm. It will be interesting going forward to see how Oliver fairs with having Malcolm under his protection. Will Ra’s al Ghul move on Starling City? And if he does really go to war with Oliver will Malcolm stand with Oliver? Is Malcom enough of a Magician to switch from bad guy to good guy?

The flashbacks show Oliver actually assassinating a target for Amanda Waller (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). It will be interesting to see if his disobediences get Maseo (Karl Yune) in trouble. Great writing to have this assassination play right back to the first season and the plane Fryers was attempting to shoot down. Not to mention that Waller’s target was China White (Kelly Hu)! Now, of course, I need to dig out my season one DVDs and re-watch their “first” meeting. Did Oliver let on he knew her? The flashbacks also emphasize why Oliver might want to be cautious about jumping to conclusions.

Oliver tells Thea that he’s trying his best to honor his promise to be honest with her, so he tells her that Malcolm is still alive. Really, this honesty promise is almost ridiculous! If he’s going to be honest, he’s got to tell her about his secret identity. However, Thea is being equally deceptive. I loved that they met for dinner out when neither of them is supposed to have any money. Where is Oliver getting money from anyway? For her own part, Thea has a mysterious backer who wants to reopen Verdant. Hmmmmm…. Could this be Malcolm? Of course it is.

I did love the scene in the coffee shop when Oliver tells Thea about Malcolm being the one to save her at the train station. Holland and Amell are both excellent in this scene. Thea is clearly thrown off by the news – but why? Is she worried about Malcolm or is she thrown because Oliver told her the truth, especially after Malcolm has emphasized Oliver’s lying? Oliver clearly realizes that something is off with Thea – something that he keeps noticing. I loved how defiant Thea was when she was kidnapped! It’s nice to see that even though she was kidnapped she didn’t just dissolve into a puddle of helplessness.

The actual kidnapping scene was excellent. Nice parkour move by what certainly appeared to be Colton Haynes – Roy – over the truck to defend Thea from Nyssa. Of course, she removes him as a threat by darting him. I loved that Thea then jumped in front of him to defend him, but she’s prevented from really trying out her new moves because Roy isn’t completely out and would see. Thea has been charmed by Roy’s helping out without trying “to get into her pants.” By the end of the episode, she offers him a position as Assistant Manager of the club. Likely a good thing as he’ll be able to continue to keep her out of the basement. Seriously, how is having someone else own that building helping to keep the lair secret???

I loved the final scene in which Oliver comes to check on Thea and then Roy. Then she gets a call from Malcolm. She thanks him for saving her and keeping her safe! She did see the Arrow was the one to cut her down, right? However, it’s hilarious when she tells Malcolm that Oliver is completely in the dark and without a clue. Malcolm smiles at the irony.

Barrowman is always a delight to watch. I particularly liked the final fight sequence when he bellows at Nyssa, “I did not kill your beloved!” The fight sequence between Malcolm. Oliver and Nyssa is excellent – though I’d prefer a few less cuts. There is also a beautiful shot at the monastery at the beginning of the episode. As the team fans out to pull the net closed around who they think is Zen Zhi Jansen, the shot pulls out to focus on a spider in the middle of its web. There’s also a nice crane shot when Malcolm and Oliver meet in public that shows the busy square where they are meeting from above, making it seem very much like a chess board.

Oliver is clearly now suspicious of Thea, so I’m eager to see that unfold. I wonder if we will see China White in the flashbacks coming up, and if so, will Oliver interact with her? Is Quentin (Paul Blackthorne) becoming suspicious of Sara’s absence? How long will Oliver and Thea be able to keep their secrets from one another? What did you think of the episode? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. Great review! Best episode of the season, loved every minute of it. Barrowman is such a great actor, I enjoy having him as a regular. More of this kind of episodes please!

  2. Hey Lisa thanks for the review. Torally agree about the cuts regarding fight. I've always been wondering why for me the AoS atrcavtad bit more impressiv it's the camera angle and sometimes the cuts.
I did not like Roys stunt infront it Thea. Even if intended as comedic it was just too silly for me.
All in all loved the episode and makes waiting for the core trio again in pass by quickly.

  3. Thanks for reading and commenting! It's such a shame about the cuts for the fights - that's on the director and editor. The fight team is about the best in the business and you can tell when they get a director who trusts in how impressive the fight is without smoke and mirrors and cuts! I have to admit that I really like the acrobatics. So the ribbon/rope stuff that Nyssa does can appear silly too, but I just really like it!

  4. Thanks! It's nice to have an episode that doesn't introduce a new villain and deal with the relationship stuff and then deal with said new villain who we never see again. This felt very meaty...

  5. I really have to disagree on Agents of Shield having better fights. They feel like raw or brutal in comparison to Arrow (except I guess the Ward May one). That and any fight with bows, swords and staffs is far cooler.

  6. Oh I like them better, but I directly after watching I am always a bit more like "awsome" by AoS, who don't have as many fights as Arrow. I don't think its the choreography rather then editing and especially the camera.

  7. Oh I love the ribbons and cloth, there is an amazing fight with a towel on Zoe Saldanas Colombiana. I also like how they incorporate the bow in fist fights. Roys flip was a bit too much in that moment for me, he could just have jumped over the car front.

  8. Fantastic episode my favourite of the season so far. Loved the fight, every Oliver scene (particularly with Malcolm and Nyssa), the Malcolm stuff was the great, the Laurel stuff was fantastic (really enjoying her story so far and KC's doing a pretty good job). Even the Roy and The stuff I didn't mind at all (well the flip come on Roy- you wanted to impress Thea fine but dude). I loved Felicity's What I miss line as well? That was great.

  9. Great review Lisa! One of the best of the series. There is nothing much negative about this. It's ridiculous in the monastery scene three masked heroes and one big guy with no disguise walk in. Diggle needs some sort of costume. Roy's parkour move was funny.

John Barrowman and Katrina Law were awesome. The plaza scene between Oliver and Malcolm was my favorite. You could see Malcolm manipulating Oliver and Oliver's mind changing once Malcolm talks about protecting Thea. JB was awesome and SA upped his game along with it. Same with Katrina Law and Katie Cassidy. KL was great in portraying her grief for Sara and the scenes of Laurel with Nyssa made me like Laurel so much more. Her determination and anger felt honest. Also it made me realize how boring SA and KC scenes are. Their argument look like bitter and petty fights all the time. At the end of this episode I was cheering Laurel on.

What are your first impressions about Matt Nable as Ra's Al Ghul? I thought he has good screen presence but the voice was soft. After last season's deathstroke and his voice everything will come short. Also Nanda Parbat was bad. It is supposed to be in tibet. This looks like it's in a desert.

  10. LOL yeah, Roy spent more time flipping over the car than he would have by just jumping.

  11. I agree, it's the camera work. From a technical aspect, the Arrow fights are way more impressive. The 3 way Nyssa/Arrow/Merlyn one was outstanding, and in this case the camera work was spot on. But usually AoS manages better camera work. Specially in the last episode with Bobbi and all.

  13. Ikr!? That flip was SO unnecessary! Lol!

  14. I posted the SAME thing about Diggle! Sunglasses, grease paint, a hat! Wear SOMETHING! His family and Oliver's identity are at risk every time he gets in on the action.

  15. So I suppose it still seems like I'm the only one that is just really annoyed with how this show is slowly but surely becoming more about Malcolm, than about Oliver... All I hear is how amazing and hilariouws and stuff it is, how amazing JB is... Well great, because I still think it's really fun and realistic how you guys decided to in the first episode that Oliver finds out he's alive, he instantly let's himself be played, decides to protect him against an army of assassins, and even made it so lame that they already kinda forced him and Malcolm fighting together on us... I still believe it's impossible for Malcolm to get redeemed, and that it'll just ruin the entire show completely, but hey, it appears that the writers and stuff are REALLY trying to go that way anyway.

I also still don't get how people are still blaming Oliver for keeping his secret from Thea, it's basically the only thing he's keeping from her, and why? Oh, maybe because one of his best friends Diggle told him that if he would, he would lose her forever? Which I still think is bullshit, but thanks for that great advice Diggle. Not to mention that I get even less how people are totally loving the hypocrisy of Thea's side and the proud sick smile on her face.

But there is also something REALLY weird there, I keep thinking about it more and more, how suspicious it is that the Arrow saved her, AGAIN, and yet Thea instantly thanks Malcolm for protecting her and saving her? WTF? Did he manage to twist her even more in some way that we don't know that she honestly thinks that Malcolm is the Arrow?
I still can't get over the fact, which makes me hate taht scene more than loving it, that with that same final scene, I'm still convinced they made her sound and look so extremely freaking proud of herself. Like: 'yay! I'm completely lying to my brother about twenty times more deliberate than he has ever done to me, and I'm loving it!' >.<

I'm just saying, her stroyline of being so butthurt and going to Malcolm so easily was already pretty bad writing and just desperation to go in against the Speedy expectation, and their love for JB, and they're just making it so much worse, because any credibility of actually being able to justify being so mad about that, is all gone now, since she's doing it back so much worse, and enjoying it, and as much as I want to, they've definitely made sure that I can see less and less how both Oliver and Thea will ever trust each other again, specially from Oliver's side if he finds out she trusts Malcolm SO much more than him...
I still just really hope they'll come up with some weird Stockholm explanation for Thea, 'cause I still think it's total BS that she really cares so much for him, after a few months of being beaten and tortured by him. Hopefully she'll hallucinate Tommy sometime, so he can punch her in the face and remind her how absolutely GREAT of a father Malcolm always was to him, and how well that kept him alive in the end.

  16. If it was really Colton though, that's pretty cool. But they could have let him show off in a more appropriate situation Haha

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think it often comes down to how the scenes are shot. But James Bamford and his team are simply spectacular....

    ReplyDelete
  18. Awesome! Thanks for this!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think you hit all the highlights! Even with only one line, Felicity can steal the scene...

    ReplyDelete
  20. I re-watched several time to make sure! So yes! Impressive to see Colton do that... So much of what they do when fighting is unnecessary, so I was ok with it...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks! I agree about Laurel. I'm so happy that we can finally get excited about her character's journey again. I hope that they keep Oliver and Laurel's relationship professional because I don't really see a lot of chemistry between these two...

I'm afraid I'm never going to stop wishing they'd had the budget to get Liam Neeson..... Really I don't think there was enough of Nable to decide. I do like that we meet him pretty convinced that he killed Sara - so we hate him already! The set looked like stock footage from Indiana Jones III...

    ReplyDelete
  22. And yes! Diggle does need a costume! He's a daddy now - he can't be going to jail...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hahaha. In that case, I am very happy for Colton. I'd break my neck if I tried that. Thanks Lisa. I like how you always know which parts of the episode will be interesting to dicuss :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I don't think it's becoming the Malcolm show. I think they've spent a few episodes on him to further Thea's storyline. I'm betting that Malcolm will be really and truly dead - or in the wind - by the end of the season. If they do redeem him, he'll have to die, and in fact, that might be how they truly redeem him. As for Thea, I think it's important to look at where she was last season. She'd been lied to and felt betrayed by everyone she knew. She'd lost everything, including Verdant, and most importantly, watched her mother being murdered right in front of her. I think that explains a lot. That said, I can certainly see and feel your frustration here. I hope the show gets better for you again.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks - I always like coming to the comments to see what I missed!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hm, it would be the ONLY way to redeem him, but knowing him and the writers, they'd probably bring him back to life, again... I'm just saying, they changed Thea's entire storyline from the get-go, just because JB thought it would be a good idea if Oliver would eventually turn out to be his son, and then they changed that to Thea, so again the show showing exactly how everything JB related is SUPER important to them... I love the guy, but just come on.
And sure, it's only been a few episodes, in which they've showed time and time again how Thea finds him that much more important than Oliver. For now it mostly seems like she's there to have her revenge with lying to him, nothing else.

    1. At the end of the season is still just way too long. While they're giving even Rauy his mask fitting already, they're just going to keep it THREE entire seasons before actually letting Thea SLIGHTLY go the way of Speedy?
    2. Last season she hadn't only been lied to. She also NEVER gave Oliver the chance to explain, nor did she ever give him the chance to actually say that when she found out about Malcolm, he hadn't known that long either. No, instead they pretty much made it so that Thea even now still thinks that Oliver knew all those years that she was Malcolm's...
    3. She lost everything, specially including Verdant, since she decided not to sign those damn papers, which in the end lost both her and Oliver EVERYTHING, which she'll just replace with Malcolm's blood money...
    4. For me it still does not explain the proud look and smile on her face for being so good at lying to Oliver, after THAT was the entire reason for her being so broken?
    5. And next to that, finally, I just still think it's weird she expressly thanks him for saving her and protecting her, after it was Oliver/The Arrow that saved her, so again that brings me back to the brainwashing and semi-Stockholm thing.

But yeah *sigh* I really hope they'll make it more fun again. Thea's one of my favorites, but they've admitted they want to do as much as possible to go in against the expectation of her as Speedy, but in a few short episodes, that has been SO extremely overly obvious, that I worry how much they're going to ruin her first, before getting there. And again, I just don't know how her and Oliver will ever really be able to work together, if the trust there is just completely and utterly destroyed.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't think that was Colton. Colton in several interviews have said he does no action scenes as he was injured previously on another show doing an action sequence. Even the free running parkour sequence with Sin last season was done by his stunt double.

    ReplyDelete
  28. His stunt double must look an awful lot like him! But that might also account for the theatrics - we're so busy looking at the roll, we don't look at the face. In a simpler move it would be easier to tell if it was or wasn't him...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think you may be giving JB a lot more power and influence than he really has. ;)
I'm betting that Thea having to keep her own secrets may make her a lot more understanding of Oliver keeping his. I'm really enjoying this new Thea, along with the new Laurel - both are much stronger. I can't stand the damsel in distress characterization!
I think it's a challenge for the show to walk the line between being something new and exciting and paying homage to the comic. I'm not nearly familiar enough with the DC universe to comment on a comparison.
I completely agree with you about the frustrating lack of communication. Why wouldn't Oliver tell her he'd only just found out himself? But then that's comics, right? Seriously, though, I really do feel your frustration about that. And I do agree that Thea caused a lot of her own problems when she wouldn't sign those papers. Of course, at the time, she thought she was giving up everything - and yet, it still smacked of a tantrum....

  30. The Nanda Parbat thing yeah it was different. But Arrow's not the first adaption of the comics to change it to a desert. And the desert thing works anyway for me because Ra's al Ghul is from the Middle East.

    ReplyDelete
  31. If it was him I'm okay with it because that's just impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That cgi of Nanda Parbat was atrocious. Clearly they were going for Petra style architecture from Jordan. It kind of reminded me of Warehouse 13. The sword fight scene of Oliver in mid season finale is going to take place in a snow covered mountain top. When I saw that picture I expected Tibetan mountains. May be that's why I was disappointed. Sara did say it was hot in Nanda Parbat.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not gonna lie didn't even notice the CGI. I am intrigued about that sword fight pic.
