Z Nation - Resurrection Z - Review

I can't believe I am going to say this, but I really enjoyed the episode. In what was a nice blend of humor, action and romance, Resurrection Z was one of the best episodes to date for this show. It also supplies us with a shocking ending that I really couldn't have imagined.

This episode our group is in dire need of some food, as they haven't eaten in a couple of days. Luckily for them Garnett has a friend Major Williams nearby at a compound. As usual they end up in a compromising situation when a priest and his followers break through the so-called "tight defenses". A little back-story on the priest. He was part of the community which Major Williams runs, but started preaching to others about the zombies, being gifts from god. He then managed to gain a dedicated following that came with him to his church. During this episode he sends 3 of his followers back into the secure compound, they act as if they wanted to re-join the community, and were fed up with the priest's vision. What I didn't get is why they bothered to let them back in, you could tell from the way they were looking that they didn't want to re-join any group. If they left the group to join a mad man, I wouldn't have let them back in.
Zombies quickly overran the compound thanks to the three followers Jacob sent in to re-join the community, they killed themselves and turned. This led into a situation which made our group have to use their initiative since they had no weapons as they had to be turned in on arrival. This did though produce some deliciously brutal zombie kills. When Addy used a blender to shred the face of a zombie or when Garnett and Warren took out a zombie with just a book. Even Mack tried to be Abraham from The Walking Dead and punch the zombie to death. I really admire the show, how they keep consistently coming up with new innovative ways to kill zombies. Each week I find myself wondering what weapon they are going to use to take out the zombies next.

Roberta and Garnett this episode seemed to be all over each other, which was strange as they didn't seem all that affectionate in previous episodes. This episode they were trying to have sex, on a tiny bed which was highly amusing to watch, especially how Roberta thought she could make everything romantic, by even lighting some candles. They even got in a "I love you" at one point, which although was cute I found it to be a bit rushed, as just last episode she was searching for her beloved husband. She must move on quick. We also had Murphy who continued down his own path, trying to figure out what he is. He knows there is something wrong with him since the zombies won't attack him. I really thought though that this episode he would turn. It did look like he might have turned though, but somehow is remaining human, by keeping the human part of his brain perhaps?.

The reason I say this is his skin colour was really grey like a zombie would be. I do hope he doesn't turn as without Murphy on the show I am not sure if I would keep watching. After the group eventually regroups in a corridor they find themselves trapped with no way out. They couldn't go back as more people were pushing and shoving trying to get out the door which was clearly locked. It was a very intense scene, especially when the zombies were biting into people one by one getting closer to our group. Addy also had another one of her strange flashbacks that looked like it involved zombies. I hope we find out soon what the flashbacks are of, as the anticipation of not knowing what is going on with her is killing me.

The group managed to get outside thanks to 10k, who always seems to disappear and reappear at the right moments; he is like their guardian angel. The group get captured by Jacob's followers a minute later and taken to him to answer for their blasphemy. 10k managed to escape again. Right behind the group is a cage full of zombies, which is when Murphy reappears to save Garnett who was about to get his throat cut. He delivers one of the greatest speeches on the show, about how he was bit and how he is the messiah. Take note Citizen Z that is how a speech is done.

Before long Jacob pulls out a gun and wants to see if Murphy is immune to a bullet. I have to say the villains on the show have been excellent, they all have provided us with an engaging story behind them. None of them have feared death; the ambition they each have shown towards achieving their goal is quite admirable. I hope in future episodes we see some more villainous characters. After Jacob pulls the trigger it was like a scramble, everyone pushing each other out the way, it wasn't long before Garnett played the hero and jumped in front of Murphy to take the bullet. I was very surprised he would be the one to die; I thought after the killing of Major Hammond, that Garnett would remain the leader until the mission had been completed. I guess I was wrong.

I don't know how they will go forward with this now, after killing of such an important character, if I had to pick someone to die it would've been Cassandra (I have nothing against her). Her story was about the cannibals has now ended, and she doesn't do/say much. Garnett, on the other hand, just started a relationship with Warren which they could have explored further. Anyway maybe we can see in the next episode what effect his death will have on the group. Right at the end Warren gave him mercy, by shooting him in the head with a sniper. I thought that was a nice touch.

Summary
Another good episode, one of the best we have had. It was filled with action sequences, fun witty dialogue and a short-lived romance. My only problem with the episode was the killing of Garnett, he was a very important character in the story, and I feel with him there were many potential story lines that could have been explored. I think it was a bad decision to kill him off.

As always , thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!

  1. I agree with everything you said. I think it would have been more effective to have killed Garnett closer to the finale or in the actual finale. Obviously, they did it for shock value. But if they don't get another strong leader in the group, it's going to weaken the show. I'm starting to wonder if this is going to be a thing with this show, always kill off each new leader of the group?

I would have picked Cassandra, too. For most of the ep, she was pretty useless.

Murphy stole the whole show. He was amazing. I agree, I think technically he has turned, but he's retaining his human brain for now. But if that preacher had shot him in the heart, there's no telling what might have happened.

Creative zombie kills, definitely a plus. And the corridor scene was so intense. I think because it was realistic. You could definitely see how the zombie virus would spread fast with people all jammed together like that. That was also another good thing with this ep. The whole ep showcased how fast and deadly the zombie virus can be. The suicide zombies turned so fast and were able to infect most of the complex in a very short time. We were never left feeling like they weren't a threat.

This was one of the best eps yet. The show is really getting much better.

  3. You are on a spoiler site, you will be spoiled here. It's called Spoiler TV.

  4. Uber uber great episode! Lots of good scares and unexpected twists. Hopefully this momentum holds for the remaining episodes.

  5. Have you read what I write or really wanted to show how smart you are? I know what this site is about, but despite it's name, not every article has that kind of spoiler in the title.

  7. So do I, after having some terrible episodes then having two really good ones (this and last one) I really hope the show keeps on getting better.

  8. I am extremely sorry, I don't normally put anything spoilery in my titles. I just thought this once I would take the risk, as I thought it was such a good line from the episode.

  9. I am glad we are on the same wave length. We seem to both always have the same thoughts! I think Warren will assume the role of group leader, which would be the most obvious choice. I would though like to see someone like Mack step up, and take the lead since he hasn't done much in the show.

Yeah that corridor scene was very good, It was actually a bit more realistic than TWD since people turning on that take ages. Where as I wouldn't imagine it would take long for someone to turn.I also think that could well be where the show is going, with killing off people. It gives more people the chance to step up and assume the leadership of the group. I thought though he would at least made it to California.

It was a very good episode, we have had now two really enjoyable episodes, only both with a stupid ending. I hope the next episode will have a really good ending and still be an action packed episode.

  10. Sorry again :)

  11. You don't have to apologize. People will complain of something no matter what you do. Since this is a spoiler site, you should be able to have spoilers anywhere including the title. It is their fault for reading the site if they don't lkke spoilers.

  12. Great recap Robert -- and as for your review titles, I think all bets are off once the episode has aired. Your URL makes things kinda clear. :)

I continue to believe this show is finding its footing as it tries (like crazy) to differentiate itself from TWD with non-stop action and campy humor. True, much of the time this is at the expense of true character development and things feel overly rushed (love scene??). But when it comes to zombies, I think they're making a pretty earnest effort to occupy an unclaimed section of TV turf. At times the show almost comes across like parody, because it hits some of those same key TWD beats but at a screaming 118mph.

This episode had three really strong elements going for it: 1) Cool-creative twist on the "suicide mission," with the three followers zombifying themselves, 2) Awesome new kill weapons that just keep getting better (hand mixer?! YEAH !!!), and 3) Main character death that (admit it) blindsided pretty much everybody. Okay yeah, I have a major crush on Tom Everett Scott and his character was my favorite, besides being the clear group leader. So it feels like maybe they just blew a huge hole right through the rest of the series ... but then I think about Addy's weird flashbacks, and Murphy's *finally* stepping up to the plate (bald head, putrid rotting flesh and all), and it seems the writers have something up their sleeves. Might be pretty cool if the new group leader was a "human zombie" that other zombies can't touch. But in the meantime, RIP Garnett ... no mercy for your fans. Ouch.

  13. Ok, I guess I can show a little bit of mercy ;)
I just finished watching and now I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that 10k doesn't want to be a leader or he'll be next.
    PS It's she.

  14. Don't apologize. It's a spoiler site. If people can't handle spoilers, they shouldn't come here till after they've watched the eps.

  15. Thanks George, appreciate it! Yeah we are tied 1-1 , hopefully it wont be another draw ;)
You have a great day too!

  16. Thank you Mary :)

I completely agree with you they are trying very hard to differentiate themselves, in some aspects it is working, others not so much. I do think however some things don't get thought out as much as they should be such as the love scene. If they had been affectionate towards one another in the last episode I wouldn't have mind them being all cosy with each other in this one , but they weren't. So really it was just rushed, just so it could become an emotional death. I think Murphy will play a massive role in future episodes, maybe he might get an army of zombies? which would be funny to see. When I saw the three followers,Funny enough I actually thought of The Following when the three follows killed themselves, as that would be a type of show to do something like that(Which it has done).

  17. OMG...Z Nation has done it again....imagine if TWD KILLED Rick one week then 4 epi's later KILLED Daryl....WOW, for me the Shocker was seeing Murphy as a Human Zombie but then we see Charlie's death...i was Floored, lol...i think i will keep this show in my tv schedule for sure...☺...

  18. The last two episode have really shown me that this series is worth keeping around. I was gobsmacked when Charlie died, I was convinced it would be someone like Mack or Cassandra. To kill of another lead character is a bold , yet risky decision they made. I do hope the writers know what they are doing.

  19. At this point, whoever becomes the leader next is the most likeliest to die. I personally hope it isn't Murphy as he is my favorite. I can't believe though that the show has already killed of two big characters with only 6 episodes aired. I wonder if anyone else is set to die this season.

  20. I agree Robert, I think they're definitely still finding their way -- it's just nice to see a few things gel here and there, with a little more frequency. Did you notice, for example, they didn't feel the need to insert a comment from Citizen Z every six minutes and things seemed to flow better?

As mentioned I totally agree that they need more work on character pacing. I don't think this will EVER be a real "character-driven" show, but I have the same complaint that I've had with The Strain: it's a drag when we, as viewers, can see the gears turning. It was pretty obvious that the writers wanted those last moments between Warren and Garnett to feel poignant and heartbreaking, so they sort of hustled in a romance that (technically, I guess?) began during the end credits of last week's episode. The only way to earn that sort of payoff is to put in more time helping us relate to the characters. My chief reaction ended up being more like, "NO $#!% THEY JUST OFFED THE MAIN GUY!!" Tears and wailing? Not so much (except due to my T.E.S. crush).

And I totally agree, I think Murphy's got some pivotal stuff ahead of him. So I'm glad that (even though he's looking grosser than ever) they've finally started to make him less of a creep.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep I did notice that, Citizen Z really isn't needed at all. The episodes where he hasn't been shown much I have really enjoyed, as like you said things seemed to flow better.

I know what you mean, for a death to mean something to you as the viewer you have to get to know the character. We didn't really know Garnett, so his death really wasn't all that meaningful. If they would have let him die later on (maybe the finale) and built up his character a little more, I may have cared that he died. Don't get me wrong I liked Garnett, but it wasn't sad or anything as we didn't know anything really about him.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ... and I'm with you, that seemed like an amazingly gutsy move on the part of the writers. Hope they know what they're doing!!

(Maybe a twisted plot device? Everybody who steps into the role gets slaughtered one-by-one, 'til we end the season/series with nothing but zombies and a Citizen Z closing recap??) :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Haha, funny enough I could actually imagine the ending scene of the show being another one of Citizen Z's annoying speeches ;)

Everyone will be dead, and it will just be him and dog left.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, yes it does. It is called SpoilerTV. What part of this is so difficult to comprehend? Everyone else seems to understand this just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It is a SPOILER SITE. Why are you apologizing? Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Everyone has said that to me, I probably wont next time. I just feel like I have ruined the episode for him.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't understand how that title is in anyway a spoiler

    ReplyDelete
  28. "I give you Mercy" is a line on the show only said when someone kills someone to prevent them being turned.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well then you shouldn't be running a spoiler site. And he shouldn't be reading a spoiler site. The whole point of spoiling something is that you remove the shock of watching it. Hence ther term spoil. If you didn't remove the shock or reveal anything that would lower the value of watching it, it wouldn't be a spoiler would it?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Please, Can we forget about if it was a spoiler or not. It might be classed a spoiler to others, some it might not.

    ReplyDelete
  31. And then the dog lets him have it. Canines take over the earth. I see spinoff potential (Pupnado??) ...

    ReplyDelete
  32. But why did he turn? And in the next episode, people turn, too when shot to death.

    ReplyDelete
  33. He turned, because he got shot in the chest. They have to destroy the brain for him to kill him completely.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Exactly, everyone turns no matter how they die.

    ReplyDelete
  35. But, that means the virus is airborne and probably everyone has it, but does not turn. On the other side one turns when bitten or injected with the wrong vaccine. That's quite complicated for a virus ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Loved that they killed off Garnett, I despised him. The episode was amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hate that they killed of Tom Everett Scott. He's why I started watching in the first place. If they keep going at this rate there won't be anyone worth watching anymore. Vive la Doc.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Omg first I've never heard of this show. But I just started watching it on Netflix and finish this episode. Shock value they did succeed at. I can't believe they killed Charlie. For me that's like killing rick from walking dead. But then again I didn't expect for them to off shane so quickly on the WD either. And the stories kept getting better just when I would say to myself what possibly could they come up with now.so I'm hoping it will be the same for this series. Damn miss my charlie though. Never will forget him nor his role in american wolf in Paris which I had went to the movies to see when I was in mg teens.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I was searching for information on z nation on google and read this title and it was a major spoiler. I wasn't on a spoiler site. The article is good but the title shouldn't allude to Charlie's death so blatantly

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well, when you deliberately google a show that you're not caught up on, it's your own fault for being spoiled.
