Z Nation - Home Sweet Zombie - Review

What would've been a good episode was ruined by a terrible ending. The episode in fact wasn't too bad, but the way that they made it a happy ending was just ridiculous. After the team went through the whole ordeal with the tornado and having to kill all the zombie firemen, it just didn't seem believable. What was even more laughable was the fact that Warren was sitting outside in a chair and managed to survive the tornado hitting her house, even though the house was crumbled around her. The promo for next week tells us that "a team member won't survive". A team member really should have died in this episode, as there were so many things that could've killed them.

Anyway, the episode this week takes place in Southern Illinois, Castle Point to be exact. Castle Point is Roberta's hometown, where she lived and grew up. She didn't actually want to go there, which was surprising as I am sure anyone would want to know if a loved one is still alive. We also find out in a conversation between Garnett and Warren that he has a wife Amy and kids. It was enjoyable to see the team going to a location where someone used to live. What would have been better though was to see flashbacks of her past. Since she was at her house it would've been the perfect time to see something about her past. Note to writers we need more character development on the show.

Earlier we hear Murphy say "After he was so wrong about that chopper, weatherman's a pretty good job for that geek". I am inclined to agree with Murphy. Citizen Z is meant to be their eyes in the sky, but he failed to notice that the chopper from the last episode didn't have any wings. What is the point of his character? I like the actor, but his character wastes valuable screen time. This episode Citizen Z gets drunk and broadcasts about "the badass storm ever".
He really wasn't needed in the episode at all. He did nothing, he only warned them about the tornado which they could clearly see themselves. If I was writing for this show I would have written Citizen Z out by now, his character becomes more irritating and pointless as the season progresses.

When the team get to Warren's house they find two people inside. One is an injured man named Rick. The two people were instructed by a fireman to go to the house. It obviously had to off been Warren's husband. Doc thinks he can save him with the correct medical supplies so Warren and Garnett head off to find some med kits in the local firehouse. Cassandra and 10k go off to scavenge for supplies, whilst the rest remained in the house. Murphy by the way made an awful comment when they got there about "Dead hubby". I like Murphy, but sometimes he can come across as ignorant, and unkind.

When Warren and Garnett get to the firehouse, the husband wasn't there the only thing that awaited them was firemen zombies. I am a bit surprised they were that easy to kill especially with helmets on. They then leave with the fire truck and return to the house with med packs and supplies. As soon as they get back the storm starts to pick up, and the tornado starts to get closer. The tornado picked up a load of zombies and started to shoot them out, I was a bit surprised that some of the zombies that got flung so many feet were still alive after the impact on the floor. I would've imagined them being killed on impact with the ground.

Murphy goes through a bit of a transformation this episode; he decides to go bald after his hair starts to fall out. I think these are all signs of the vaccine not working. It probably worked in the beginning and is now starting to lose its effect. He is also acting pretty strange, as he didn't want to kill one of the zombies in the basement. Perhaps he was imagining himself in the zombie’s shoes. At the rate Murphy is changing, I don't know if he will make it to California in time.
Addy, on the other hand, is having these strange flashbacks, I would say they are related to the whole cannibal experience, but we saw most of what was going on there. Perhaps it was from her past.

As the storm is right on their doorstep, Warren locks the basement door and sits in her husband's chair with their wedding album in her hand. I think she was hoping her husband would come and rescue her. I don't think she wanted to die; she just wants her husband back. Cassandra and 10k meanwhile take shelter in a car. I didn't get that at all, the last place you want to take shelter is in a car which can be lifted up into the air like anything. It wasn't a smart move and there lucky it didn't cost them their life's.

As the tornado has struck the house, Warren to my shock survived. Even though the house is completely destroyed, she somehow remains intact on her chair. Realistically she would probably be dead or at least under some rubble. In the end, they find her and give her back her weapons which have also not been blown away. The group then leave in the fire truck and van.

Summary
It was an ok episode. I actually enjoyed it most of the time. Yet again, some silly decision-making and a terrible ending let the show down, again. We do not need every episode to end with Citizen Z and one of his endless speeches

As always , thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!

  1. As the surprise is right on their front entrance, Roberta Warren hair the underground room entrance and rests in her spouse's seat with their marriage record in side. I think she was expecting her spouse would come and save her, I don't think she desired to die , she just wants her spouse returning. Cassandra and 10k meanwhile take protection in a car. I did not get that at all, the last position you want to take protection is in a car which can be raised up into the air like anything. It was a foolish choice and there fortunate it did not price them their the world's.

  3. I would agree with you about Roberta beginning blown away or under some rubble, but she wasn't. She was under her chair though. Which was weird, but it was something. Although, she is pretty sad about never knowing what happen to her husband, so now she just needs to hook up with Garnett.

Murphy's slow transformation is not really shocking to me because of the one episode were he was picking at his teeth and pulled one out. However, he needs to quit being an asshole all the time and only use it at an appropriate time, but yanno not everyone is nice. It adds a touch of realism and gets under my skin which I guess keeps me watching it. haha

However, I like Citizen Z and yes, he is supposed to be the 'eyes of the sky'. Warren and Garnett was standing outside and just chatting, yes they could've seen the storm clouds, but nobody else was going to know with a tornado coming. Mack and Addy were about to bang until Addy had a flashback (poor Mack). Murphy and Doc were playing cards and dealing drugs. Sunshine and 10K were relaxing. Like I said, nobody else would have known besides a hint from the thunder, so why not a little warning? There are other people listening to him on the radio. With him being drunk is understandable because he's alone and he's gonna drink because of that...yanno ease the pain. He only has a doggie with him that probably hasn't been named.

Although, they do need to put more of a realistic touch and have a team member die and add another or two. They had Rick and his wife, so killing Warren wouldn't have been a problem. : ) Some episodes with no happy endings is fine, if anything a cliffhanger would probably help the show and Mack needs to bang and talk to Addy so she isn't so distracted by her flashbacks. It would probably help her talk about it, although the writers are probably keeping it a secret for a little bit. I am really curious about her past...well everyone's past, especially Murphy's.

I think I said all I could've said...but yeah, here are my thoughts with sociology and psychology added.

  4. The chair being on top of her is something I guess , but It would have been nice for them to make the effort for it to look like a real tornado has hit them , with the chair being blown away and her being under some rubble.
Ok , I suppose I accept that a warning didn't hurt , I just feel with Citizen Z there not really doing anything with him and are just including him in the smallest of things just so he is in the episode. When I saw Murphy pull a tooth out I didn't think anything off it at the time , now I wonder what will happen with his character especially further through the season. Whilst Murphy is an asshole most of the time , he is actually my favorite character , I like his humor that he brings to the show.

  5. Great review. I felt the same way. It could have been a really good ep. They had all the elements. The zombinato was fun. The zombie firemen were good. Although, how exactly did the firemen become zombies when they were all geared up with gloves, heavy coats and helmets on? This bugged me. It was also funny when Warren was using a broom to flip the zombies off the fence.

Then we get to all the stupid. What was the point of head injured man if nothing was going to happen? Drilling a hole in his injured head with an unsterilized tool by Doc, who isn't a trained brain surgeon and nothing happens? Really? He even wasted two bottles of heroin on this guy at the end. Come on, this guy isn't going to get a serious infection and die? No way he is not going to turn. And his girlfriend/wife was completely insane thinking he'd be okay. The two of them went off with NO weapons!

That brings us to the lack of ammo. The group has had a million chances to pickup more guns and ammo. They are constantly running out of ammo. Insane.

Cassandra and 10K in the car, pointless unless the car crashed badly from the storm. It flips over multiple times, they aren't hurt.

Warren not getting killed or injured during that storm, well, they did show a fireman come and shield her. Maybe it really happened. However, we are shown at the end, her husband is now a zombie.

Murphy, I liked. He's turning. The vaccine was a failure. All it did was keep him alive longer, but he's rotting away and turning. The group has no clue. So this could be very interesting.

Addy's flashbacks needed to tell us what's up. I'm assuming she was attacked during a storm at some point, so now the storms freak her out.

Yeah, I was shocked they gave this ep a happy ending. All is good, everyone is fine. Totally ruined this ep. What are we watching? Brady Bunch of the Dead?

  6. I agree, Citizen Z is pointless now. I think they should just leave him as a voice on the radio every once in awhile. But he's a total waste of screentime.

  7. They should only use his character if he is actually needed, seeing him drinking out of a dogs bowl like in this episode is something I want to spend my time watching.

  8. Agree with everything you said. I just realized that about the firemen turning , how did they turn? Maybe they were held up at the station behind that door which Warren opens and all just died through Starvation or something. The seen with Doc was so stupid , he is going by what he saw on TV at one time. He somehow manages to drill a whole in the correct place without damaging anything , you would need to be a fully trained brain surgeon to drill into someone skull. Them people just seemed like another way to pass the episode , just another pit stop where they coincidentally find people in need of help. Cassandra and 10k would not survive a tornado in a truck , it would be lifted into the air.
The firemen on Warren must of been an illusion something she was imagining as if it was someone they would have taken her away from where she was not leave her there and vanish.

  9. Yep I agree that with Addy they should have told us what is wrong with her, they cant show something and not explain what the flashbacks were off. I doubt we will find out anytime soon.

  10. I know what you mean about him easing the pain because he is alone , it just feels like his scenes are incredibly stupid. I doubt many people find watching someone on our screens drink or burp etc enjoyable.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Couldn't agree more , he wastes so much of the screen time with us having to watch him cook food , burp , talk to the dog etc.

  12. We will probably find out soon enough @Barry W. I doubt they will leave the whole season without informing us of what is going on with her.

  13. I'd like to think the fireman was her husband and he saved her, but he got blown away and killed by the tornado and that's why he's now a zombie. But it could have just as easily been a hallucination or even his ghost somehow. Kind of left to interpretation.

I'm wondering how they will continue this show if Murphy turns. Or maybe they will leave him as a more intelligent zombie?

  14. We haven't seen him go to the bathroom yet, I'm sure that's next. LOL :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Probably , we haven't seen him sleep either lol

    ReplyDelete
  16. Could be , like you said it is open to interpretation. If he did get blown away surely she would have blown away with him though. I have no idea what they will do if Murphy turns or even dies. He is the mission, to get him to California if he dies the show really would have stood for nothing. Then again I have no idea what they plan on doing once they get there , it might just turn into a show where there is no mission just them trying to survive.

  18. Thanks, yes, i know...i Posted it First here on ur thread, lol...☺...

  19. Yeah, I guess you could say that. I, for some reason, like Citizen Z. Maybe if he could do something else that'd be great. What he would do? I have no idea honestly. But other then wasting screen time they could show flash backs when the virus broke out and how everyone, even the government and military, handled it.

  20. Yeah, although with all of the bad stuff going on it is kinda funny watching him go crazy from no human interaction. XD

  21. What is the dog's name by the way?

    ReplyDelete
  22. It is sometimes funny :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I actually don't know, all I can remember him saying is "good boy". I am trying to find if he has a name , but have had no luck. Maybe someone else knows or maybe he hasn't been given a name.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't remember. Maybe he hasn't named the dog yet? We might get a scene of that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I wonder what he will name it , if he hasn't already. If it was a girl dog he probably would have named it Addy.

  26. Did you catch where they even called him her stalker? LOL. I'm just hoping they don't kill off her boyfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I didn't was that in the last episode? I am not sure if you have seen the promo for next week , but apparently there will be one less survivor so lets hope it isn't him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It was one quick line, in this ep, I think. It was either when they were still at the house in the beginning or right before they go to Warren's home town. Someone mentioned he was her stalker.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It was probably Murphy or Doc there the two that add the comedic value to the show.

  30. 5 episodes in and finally they're in the midwest. I'm quite curious with Murphy's after effects. Either he's hallucinating brought by his slow and steady deterioration and eventualy transformation as a zombie himself or the drug is having him develop a connection with the Z's. Both options happening at the same time is quite a stretch but could happen if the writers are going toward that direction.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am also curious what will happen with Murphy , I think it could be a bit off both. He may have some weird connection to Z's which is an effect of the drug. Like we saw last episode when he was hugging one, he seemed to care for it.

  32. Okay now that TWD is back in full swing (with such an awesome premiere), I'm definitely trying hard to keep this show in its own unique category and not compare the two. Ironically, this one's SO much more like a comic/graphic novel than TWD. I agree this was a somewhat solid, if campy, hour. Perfect that the show is produced by the "Sharknado" gang and when Garnett looks at the twister and says, "What's that?" Warren is like "Ain't no sharks!"

But yeah, also agree about the ending. If her house is reduced to rubble, don't try to sell us on her survival. Way too lame of a bait-and-switch. I will say, though, that I'm glad to see a little bit more character direction in that Addy's having some kind of post-traumatic stress thing, and Murphy is clearly morphing into ... something. This is SO not a character-driven show, but they need to keep earning their audience with regular teasers like this (while ditching teasers like the Warren fake-out).
