Z Nation - Full Metal Zombie - Review"

In the opening few minutes, we see our group ambushed by a group of thugs disguised as zombies. I have to say their disguises were very good as I didn't notice them being human until they drew weapons. Having said that, I don't know why they wouldn't go around them. (They presumed at the time they were zombies) They didn't want to go through them, fair enough, but they can always drive around. Soon after they get ambushed again, this time it is somewhat hilarious as they get their truck stolen by an innocent looking family, at your first glance. The family shoot the previous robbers and take the truck, about a minute later you see the family dead. It was really a waste of time ambushing the group if they can't survive more than five minutes.

The scene would've been completely ridiculous until Garnet suggested getting off the highway, which was the most sensible thing I had heard all episode. After being informed by our friend Citizen Z that a military base is near, and there is a chopper on the roof that could take them to California. I have two problems here, one the amount of fuel that would be required to get the chopper off the ground, unless it was already fully fuelled which is highly unlikely. They would need a lot of fuel, and that isn't exactly easy to come by. Also, who would pilot this chopper? I don't remember any of them saying they have a license in piloting. Unless the General is going to help or one of them can fly a helicopter, it's going to be useless to them.

Once our group gets to what's left of a military base, Doc decides to go ahead to check on the General, where he takes an unpleasant plunge into an air shaft. Surprisingly, this ends up being a main part of the episode where again like most episodes that scene should have only taken up 5 minutes. When we see a zombie in the shaft with Doc, it looked like it had potential to be interesting, but then as always they drag it out for way too long and I started to lose interest, especially at the point where he started smoking a joint. On the bright side of all of that, we learn a little more about him, one of the main things being that he might have a 19-year-old boy. I don't get how you wouldn't know if you had a son, surely the mother would have told him. That could be the reason though why he likes 10k so much; he is maybe trying to replicate having a son.

After hearing Doc's cries for help the team advance on the facility holding one of the militant's hostage. They throw the hostage into a group of zombies after the general shuts down power to the elevator, to try and dispose of our group. What I found stupid was when Murphy decided to run out towards the zombies instead of staying with the group who have guns. As always they had to clear the place out, although the violence was tame this episode compared to previous episodes the zombies kills were still enjoyable. Anyway, a large zombie shows up, and instead of the whole group shooting it, they each decide to take it in turns to try to kill it, all failing, of course. Warren could have used her sword to kill it which would've been much more effective. They can take the easy route in these situations, but they never choose to. I notice this a lot during the episodes we've seen, them making life harder for themselves. Eventually, after messing around for so long they use the grenade that the zombie had on him to blow him up. The zombie then falls down the shaft with the grenade with help from Garret. Where Doc is... The grenade happens to set Doc free from what he was tied up to. Very convenient. Realistically he probably wouldn't have gotten free at all, and it looked like to me that he'd burned.

After thinking Doc is dead, they still remain on task of getting the helicopter. Obviously, when they get to it the helicopter is in no condition to fly and also their proposed pilot (the general) is a bit crazy. When two zombies came rushing out they ignored our group and went towards the general where he managed to spray with his two pistols and still not kill the two zombies. He eventually plummeted to his death after falling off the building. Nevertheless, it was a great shot of him falling to his death still attempting to kill the zombies.

Also, in the episode we saw a flashback of 10k's past where he put his dad out of his misery after his father turned. The writers were pretty much just confirming with a flashback that what 10k had told the group earlier. I don't think they needed to add the flashback at all, I mean it is great how they are introducing flashbacks about our character's past, just as long as it either explains something about a character we didn't know or gives us an insight into one of their past's. We didn't need to see a flashback of something we've been told. I am not going to even talk about Citizen Z much as his scenes really put me off the show. In this episode, he has a bit of an obsession with Addy which is starting to become creepy. He looks through her photos and searches her on the internet. I still don't understand why he is even on the show. If it wasn't for him giving directions he wouldn't be needed. I am hoping they shake things up a bit with him and do something interesting with his character.

Summary
The episode seemed very pointless, and the writers seem to be running out of ideas before it has really begun. All these pit stops are getting a little annoying to watch, they each have had their good moments, but each task always ends up being a waste of time and not working out for the group.

As always , thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!

  2. Funny you say that , I am actually going over the pros and cons of the show deciding whether to continue reviewing and watching it. Out of all the things I review Z Nation is my least favorite.

  3. If you want me my advice , you should stop and run from this show lol

It's like watching sharknado every friday lol.
You should review another show .. at least you will feel good about it .

  4. I have never watched Sharknado , but judging by the 4.9 rating on IMDB it can't be that good.
I review others as well I am doing Intruders and Gracepoint and have Black Sails and The Librarians lined up for later in the year.

  9. Thank you , that means a lot :) I will probably continue for a few more episodes to see if I enjoy it any more , but I just grow tired of slating the show. I want something to happen in it that is good , so I can praise it.

  10. Apparently, they are doing Zombie-nado next week. I'm not a Sharknado fan. I watched the first few minutes of that awful thing and couldn't go any further.

As far as this ep goes, I actually thought it was alittle better. They are at least attempting to give some characterization. But somehow, it fell short.

There were alot of dumb things in this ep. First of all, the ones disguising themselves as zombies. There were no guarantees someone wouldn't drive up and shoot like crazy or simply mow them down with the car. It was not a good plan to be standing in the road like that.

I thought the family was funny, seeing the little kids suddenly have guns. Very surprised when they all ended up dead.

Why didn't they look for guns, ammo and supplies at that building? OMG, it was probably loaded with all that, seeing as how it was full of military types. The whole area would be a supply goldmine, if not with food, definitely with guns and ammo.

Elevator shaft scene was a bit too long. That grenade could have been done earlier.

The wounded crazy Captain/General whatever he was didn't work for me because anyone with a leg that bad would be really sick and not be walking around. He was out of his mind, he wasn't really talking to anyone on the phone.

Citizen Z has turned into a creepy stalker.

The ep really wasn't that bad. It's still very much like a bad Syfy movie. And that seems to be the audience they are targeting. I want to see more eps and see where it goes. But it will never be award winning like Walking Dead.

  11. I think you should keep doing the reviews, but review it as the bad show it is :) Nitpick it :D

  12. Thanks, Robert!

My Shows are The Blacklist, Resurrection, Sons Of Anarchy, The Leftovers and The Strain. I am actually in the middle of writing The Strain Review now. The Finale is tomorrow night, but I get so busy with work around the Fall because I'm in the Medical field and it's the busiest season. So I get behind around this time and I am constantly playing catch up with Reviewing some shows, like The Strain, Lol. The Finale Review I will get out this Monday for sure though.

Thank you for your interest. I was actually thinking about this yesterday actually. When I visit other Review sites and check out the comments, their community is nothing like the SpoilerTV fanbase. There is a big difference.

What shows do you Review beside 'Z Nation'? I know you write Gracepoint, which, honestly, I read this morning but I didn't watch the episode yet, Lol. I am one of the few people that love spoilers. Good job on that one btw.

  13. You are probably right , the finale they will finally get there. I wonder if this ever gets renewed what they plan to do next season. Travel to another city perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Probably. They'll just say there's another group of scientists someplace else and drag Murphy over there. It's just going to be a never evening travel fest.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree. It's a zombie road trip show. Even the logo is of a highway sign.

  16. Looks to me like the writers of this show have had their brains eaten.

  17. I unfortunately have not see the Finale for The Strain, but I am looking forward to it! I just finished watching the last Z Nation episode and the last part with Doc was really bad, Lol. I will probably finish out the season...maybe. I will probably continue as long as you write the Reviews.

I definitely want to watch Gracepoint, especially now that I know you Review it. You really do a good job. Keep it up bud.

  18. I think for 10k's flashback to work, the earlier scene where he was telling the others about his dad being his first kill should have been cut out completely, or at least let it be a bit ambiguous enough for the viewers to know who was his first kill and how it changed him into being 10k.

As for the detour this week, I honestly do think the group was trying to skip having to go west on land upon hearing there's a base with a helicopter and military people yet unturned. It's more or less a wasted detour than being pointless and unnecessary.

Hopefully they do make gains as the show progress in the latter half of the season. They managed to get to as far as MD/DC/VA so at least they're no longer stuck in PA for another episode.

By the way, I'm getting a bit of a "Journey to the West" vibe with Z Nation. Weird but yeah.

  19. Thank you for the kind words!
Yep the scene with doc was ridiculous , it might have been one of the worst scenes so far on the show. I have decided to continue writing for it, but will not be trying to find positives in the show , because there really isn't none. If this gets a season 2 I will be forever shocked.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lol, I will be shocked as well, but I also think the SyFy Channel has done crazier things in the past so a Season Two pick-up might not be totally out of the question. It's a shame, really, I was hoping this show would be so much more than it is.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was , which is why when I applied for SpoilerTV put my name down for it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yep I agree with you , they should have had just the flashback , there was no need for him to tell a story about it when we were just going to see it later on. I think they will probably reach California come seasons end , they are making progresses towards getting there ,but I still think some if not all detours have been a complete waste of time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I hope not , that would be awful.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't understand how they have the 'Grenade-Zombie' fighting like that??? It's supposed to be a brainless Zombie that wanders around looking for animal flesh to eat, not a cage match, Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I know what you mean , its like it wasn't even a zombie. I don't think the writers think things through. Although I have come to expect unrealistic things to happen on this show , so it didn't surprise me that much.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow guys, I definitely don't think this show is a masterpiece but then again, I find it kinda fun in a "brainless" (HA) sort of way. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and I don't think it expects that from its audience either. I'm a huge Walking Dead fan, which is such a different type of show that there's no point in comparing the two. That one's a character study with zombies as a backdrop; this one's a zombie road trip show with a new city featured each week. Nothing deep about it -- it's cheesy and high-energy, with lots of gore splatter and some wisecracks thrown in. It almost reminds me of a zombie video game (though way more like "Resident Evil" than "The Last of Us"). I enjoy your recaps, Robert -- so sorry it's a pain for you to watch. For what it's worth, I'm also a "Strain" fan (great recaps there too, Geo N) ... and I've gotta say, that one really struggled with its pacing this season and just look at its pedigree. If Z Nation and The Strain were amusement park thrill rides, I'd actually wait in line for Z Nation vs. The Strain ... at least in Season 1.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think I have to come to accept that the show is just very cheesy and wont ever be the same as The Walking Dead or in any comparison to that. Like you say they are both different shows

    ReplyDelete
  28. I will read it later. In past reviews/recaps I did praise how different the show was. I love the creative ways they come up with to kill the zombies etc. I do appreciate that this is just a fun zombie show , not meant to be serious at all , but as I review other shows where I praise the show. I find it very difficult to say anything positive about this since I don't usually watch shows that are very cheesy.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I totally hear you. And The Walking Dead still rules. :)
