The Walking Dead - No Sanctuary - Review & Discussion

13 Oct 2014

Who was with me in bawling like a baby when Rick and Judith were reunited? The Walking Dead came back for a fifth season with two things that are too rare on this show: ending on a happy note following several tear-inducing reunions, and the group getting out of a tight spot with no fatalities (at least none that we care about).

I didn’t realize how good it would feel to have Carol and Tyreese reunited with the group, but after what went down with Lizzie and Mika, Tyreese and Carol deserve some time off to let others in the group carry the load. It was great to see them back with the people they love. I also wasn’t expecting so much emotion in the Carol/Rick reunion. Interestingly, Rick now seems to be more on the Carol side of the spectrum – and maybe a little beyond Carol now – in the ongoing killing-people and doing-hard-things debate. Whereas with Carol I’m seeing regret and some compassion, Rick seems to have inched toward the slightly scary side end of the spectrum in the past couple of episodes.

We now have everyone accounted for an together except for Beth. Hopefully they won’t string us along for too long until we hear from her.

Along with the reunions, we also had a lot of action, a long list of those perfect small moments that show does so well, some kick-ass Carol moments (erasing any lingering doubts that that timid mouse from seasons one and two is long gone), and answers on how the Termites came to be as twisted as we found them. They suffered the fate that our group has been lucky to narrowly skirt so far, and that’s becoming so victimized and damaged that the experience turns them into something unrecognizable.

The show has a lot of strong episodes, but this season opener written by show runner Scott Gimple and directed by Greg Nicotero came close to perfect in delivering something for everyone.

The Termites’ past experience would seem to score one point in the column for not trusting in this world, yet part of me still feels Hershel was right on that point when he counseled Rick in season 3 that he needs to start letting people in again.

Action, Action, and Action

So let’s talk about the episode. We start off pretty much where we left off – with most of our group still locked in the container while Carol and Tyreese get closer to the complex. Tyreese is still so shaken he says he’s not ready to kill walkers yet. Meanwhile Carol tells him that she’ll make sure he and Judith get to Terminus safely, but she’s not staying. Whether that’s because of Karen or because Carol isn’t emotionally ready yet to try again, it’s not clear. Probably a mixture of both.

Inside the container, in a cleverly filmed scene we’re quickly brought up to speed through a voice overlay on key conversations, such as Daryl telling Maggie about Beth, while we see a close up of the group hard at work making weapons. Their plan is to be ready when the doors open, but it’s not going to be that easy. The Termites attack from above with gas, and Rick, Glenn, and Bob are brought to the slaughterhouse – where Rick is reunited with Sam, a harmless man he and Carol met in season 4’s Indifference.

This ties back to the episode where Rick had banished Carol (relevant given Carol’s role in rescuing them as the episode continues), is one of several discreetly inserted call backs in the episode. Another is their butcher’s choice of weapon – a baseball bat. He swings it like Martinez did in season 3’s Arrow on the Doorpost, as Martinez tells Daryl how he really hates the walkers after what they did to his family. The difference here is that, whereas Martinez was using it on the dead, the butcher is using it on the living.  As we learn from the flashbacks, though, both have reason to hate.

The scene continues with the murders of Sam and other unnamed prisoners, with Glenn next in line. Bob, sounding insanely idealistic, tries to reason with Gareth, telling him that one of their group knows the cure that can end all this. Rick, on the other hand, is past reasoning. It didn’t work on the Governor, and this time around he coldly tells Gareth he’s going to kill him.

The group’s execution is stalled by the sound of a nearby explosion, which we later learn was set off by Carol, who learned the Termites had her friends. It distracts the Termites and gives Rick a chance to cut his bonds and kill his captors. This parallels another another scene where Carol and Tyreese – still making their way toward Terminus –escape a horde of walkers because the walkers are distracted by the sound of gunfire in the distance. This was probably Rick and his group starting a gun fight in Terminus, which we saw in A. The two groups (Carol's and Rick's) seem in sync with each other, which helps them escape.

In contrast, whereas our group cares about each other and works together, the Terminus group is fractured. Martin, a Terminus member captured by Carol and Tyreese, tells Tyreese he doesn’t have any friends anymore: “I mean I know people. They’re just assholes I stay alive with.” The differences between the two groups is subtly shown through the way they communicate and interact. There’s caring and emotion in our group, but the Termites act like they’re on the job, with the butcher – when they’re being attacked – saying security’s not his job. Symbolically, the breaks in the their group is shown through the broken communication. They periodically trying to contact each other through walkie-talkies, and get no response.

While several characters had good moments in this episode, this was Carol’s turn to shine. She overhears Martin talking about Michonne and the “kid in the hat,” and how he’s going to take the hat after he bleeds the kid. She has a great line as a response: “We’re friends with the chick with the sword and the kid in the hat.”

Carol, borrowing from the trick Michonne learned about blending with walkers by covering herself with their insides (another call back), uses walkers as a weapon (the Governor’s choice weapon), and blows a fuel tank to create a distraction and let the walkers take down Terminus. She faces down Terminus’ Mary and learns how the Termites got to where they were – how they trusted the wrong people and were attacked and raped. There were parallels between the two women. They were both victims who became survivors by becoming colder. The difference being that Carol still has more of her humanity.

Carol went into Terminus with the intent to kill to save her friends, but she looked sad doing it. You could see she was pained as she passed a woman being eaten by walkers. This is something else that she didn’t want to do but felt she had to for the group – something that will become part of her.

Other Thoughts:

- I was going to note Rick writing in “No” before the Sanctuary sign as one of those special little moments, but it was topped by an even better one. How awesome was it seeing Morgan at the end? I didn't see that coming.

- Let’s talk about Tyreese. I think I caught a whiff of some new character development from that corner. Tyreese was a man who was early on portrayed as having a temper. But he seems to have chosen a nonviolent path. Martin, in a great quote, predicted Tyreese would be killed: “You’re the kind of guy who saves babies. It’s kind of like saving an anchor when you’re stuck on a boat in the middle of the ocean. … You’re a good guy. That’s why you’re gonna die today. That’s why the baby’s gonna die.” I don’t think Tyreese killed Martin, so what do you think? Will that come back to haunt him? Or was it the right choice?

- In contract to Tyreese, Rick was almost scary in his bloodlust to kill every last person in Terminus. How will being reunited with Judith affect him?

- The flaming walker that bit the face of a Termite wins the award for best gratituous zombie gore for this episode.

- Carol gets the award for deepest comment with her response to Mary, who said they're still there, "you're not here. Neither am I."

- Did anyone else think Martin looked like Glenn from season one?

- Another nice small moment was Maggie using Hershel’s watch to help build weapons.

What did you think about the episode?  Was it everything you hoped?  Let me know in the comments.

  2. So many many top notch moments -- it surprised me how great it was. Loved the emotion of the Carol/Daryl/Rick reunion even more than the one with Baby Judith ( Carl looked like he wasn't sure what the director wanted him to do in that Judith scene but it was still good). When Rick said " You did this?" to Carol and embraced her, I felt like it was a huge moment in the series. You hit on quite a few interesting observations -- thanks for the intriguing review.

What surprised me the most is the quick 'burn-off' of the Sanctuary/Terminus storyline.

  4. Great Review! Thank you!

I thought Martin looked like a younger Glenn also. Martin was also wearing a Detroit hat (with an old English "D" on it) where S. Yeun is from (and me too). He's from Troy, but that is super close to Detroit.

Did you (Or anyone else) notice that the crazy guy with long hair that Rick, Glenn, Bob, and Daryl save from that Rail Car, right after escaping that gets in Rick's face before getting eaten by a Walker, is the same guy in the final flashback scene that walks in the Rail Car with Gareth, Alex and their mom, Mary? I thought that was a nice touch to the episode.

  6. Decent episode made 1000x better by the surprise scene after the credits. I am now pumped for this season!

  7. Yes, that was a great surprise.

  8. Great review Chris. Glad to have the show back.

One of the best premieres the show has done so far.

  10. Glad I saw your comment - I had to go back and watch as I turned it off after the promo and missed the fact there was a scene after the end credits.

  11. I seriously feared that Judith was a goner last night. I thought that would be what caused Tyrese to go on back to killing. Glad that Little Asskicker survived to see another day. I totally teared up when Carol and Daryl were reunited. It was such a great moment. So many good moments last night. Epically solid premiere.

  12. It surprised me that we got out in one episode but I'm glad. We spent 8 or so episodes getting there last season glad we can move on....

  13. nice reviews. I was like AWW when Rick was reunited with Judith. Awesome start to the season

  14. Great review.

I would not be surprised if Morgan is going to meet Beth.

Tasha Yar was the mother of Gareth (so Commander Data is his father?) and do Gareth (and Data) want to find out who did this to her and take revenge? Sorry if i mixed up two of my favorite series. But it's really a serious question if the only goal of Gareth will be to find out who did this to his mother.

I'm curious why Abraham needs to talk (to Rick)? The reaction of Abraham, Rosita and Eugene when they saw Judith was strange.

  15. Awesome review - thanks!
I loved everything about this episode. Particularly the reunions.
I will be the first to admit, I was not a huge fan of Carol when this show first started but damn if she hasn't developed nicely. She was pretty much a wet dishrag when the show started but I really enjoy her arc now. She's a complete badass wrapped in a warm fluffy bathrobe. I would totally want a hug from her and yet be afraid of it :)
Daryl's reaction to Carol's return was especially heartwarming. He said very little when he realized Rick cut her loose so to see such a strong emotional, yet silent, reaction from him spoke volumes.
When Rick runs towards Judith, that poor child had to be terrified. I'm surprised she didn't cry.
Now all that is missing is Beth.
Morgan is back ... hell's yes Lenny James.
Tyrese just won't ... yeah, we believe you bro as we back slowly away from the cabin.

Well, it's also good to note how grown over the "NO Sanctuary" sign had become. A LOT of time had passed by the time Morgan got there. No telling WHEN we'll see him next.

    Beggin' for Neagan!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lol, so turns out since I posted that ive seen that the writers have confirmed they were cannibals so that throws that out of the window. Still hope this other group are hunters/cannibals though because if not theyve missed an amazing story arc to tell.

And yes I think it was the first hint at Negan haha, a hint that may have been missed by some.

  19. Same guy? Wow! I didn't notice. I thought he had been a part of Gareth's group and was shut in the trailer for some sort of disobedience.

  20. That's a really excellent point -- I hadn't even noticed that until you mentioned it and I went back and re-watched. I should have remembered that they've been experimenting more with timeline skips in telling some of these parallel stories. And of course those marks on the trees ... as you say, no telling when those were placed there, or by whom, or for what purpose. Thanks for that heads up!

  21. If you wanna get stream w/o download and get the latest episode, you can get it. I was stream on my country and it was good premiere. http://tiny.cc/wx6onx

  22. Both were great scenes. I think the Rick one hit me more because he was so broken in After when he and Carl thought Judith was dead, but on the flip side, Carol's a much more developed character, so that was emotional in a different way. Thanks for the comments!

  23. I thought they'd be there for half a season, but I was also convinced the group would get driven out of the prison at the end of season 3. As long as they have a plan ... which I'm sure they do. :)

  24. That's a really great catch! When he said to Rick, "we're the same," I was thinking that has to be significant, but I couldn't place him. I was also wondering about the family relationship with Mary. I was tempted to write in the review that she was a mother (like Carol) because I got that vibe in the flashbacks, but I didn't think that was confirmed. Did you get that from the comics?

    ReplyDelete
  25. That would have been horrible if Judith was killed right before Carol meets up with Rick. Judith dying last night didn't cross my mind, but I'm seriously worried for Tyreese now.

  26. I really appreciated the economy of the scenes. I've been watching too many other shows that can't seem to get the recapping right. I was impressed at how much they squeezed into that brief voice over while focusing on the tension in the storage container, and how they picked two flashbacks that just about said it all.

I had a similar feeling about Morgan before seeing him in this episode, but I'll admit, I was cheering when he took off the mask. I wasn't expecting to see him again after Clear because how do you follow that? But I'm curious now to see where this goes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That is an excellent catch! I'm impressed that you noticed that.

  28. I took the pieces of meat being hung like at a butchers' - that and the cattle line - as confirmation. I wonder if people who haven't read the comics and don't follow this online would get that though. The suggestion was very subtle.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Agree with all of the above. There was lot of love in this episode.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think I heard them say Mary was Gareth's mother on Talking Dead. Like you, I wasn't 100% sure from the episode but I seem to remember Gimple confirming it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. YES!! Exactly what I was thinking as I watched, Chris. There are some newer shows this season with some pretty big-name showrunners, and their pacing has been all over the map. Really goes to show how tough it must be to break the action into episode-sized "chunks" without losing forward momentum (and viewer attention). Watching the really clever ways they layered and paced this episode -- tons of backstory in an economy of space -- I almost felt like the writers were saying, "Now THIS is how you do it, guys!"

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ah, ok. Thanks. I didn't have a chance to watch TTD yet. I still hadn't finished my review when it was on last night, and was rewatching the episode.

  35. @Chris....great recap....just a couple of things u missed:
    1) Gareth & Alex were brothers...in the last "Then", they called Mary "Mom"...watch it with CC on...
    2) Alex was the man on the table they were Chopping up

Morgan had to return...he has a Long storyline way into Alexandria in the comics so they had to bring him back...Michonne & Morgan were Lovers so lets see if that happens, lol...

i feel that Tyreese didnt Kill that guy....and Gareth will find him and hunt for Rick's group and i think it will not end well for somebody....

the X in the circle on the tree that Morgan found was made by Gareth...and it's a Sign that Trackers make when they are hunting to keep track where they are...Gareth is Tracking Rick and now, we see that Morgan will be Tracking Gareth....it will get interesting, lol....

Was I the only one that noticed in Carole & Mary's face-off that they were clearly once the same demo (a loving, warm, sensitive mom) & this showed how that type can have vastly different outcomes in this world?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I was more choked up at Rick asking Carol : did you do this and their embrace..... But yes, definately

The episode was Amazing ! Completely worth the (excruciating) wait !! It had a little of everything - and was very intense.... Best Family Reunion ever. Plus, MORGAN ! What is with those "x marks the spot" - because there wasn't just one there were several.

    Welcome Back TWD!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I thought that, too! I kind of wonder if they'll show any more of the Termites' back stories - maybe they'll reunite with a survivor or two later on?

    ReplyDelete
  39. dont worry bout getting spoiled by the comics...they change alot of the storylines on TV so even the comic readers get surprised alot, lol...u can get the comics very easy, they sell 2 books called Compendium 1 & 2, which cover the first 96 issues...i must tell u, i've enjoyed the show much better after reading the comics, especially cause they are so Graphic, it's exciting...☺...

  40. Thanks for the info. I may end up doing that at some point. With posting online reviews, I haven't been very successful at avoiding the comic-related spoilers anyway. ;)

  41. You quoted 'You’re the kind of guy who saves babies. It’s kind of like saving an anchor when you’re stuck on a boat in the middle of the ocean.'
we think he said 'You’re the kind of guy who saves babies. It’s kind of like saving an anchor when you’re stuck 'without' a boat in the middle of the ocean.

Or here in the UK do we get different a soundtrack LOL.

Otherwise a great review, we have to wait an extra day here to see TWD, we have also started watching Z Nation, lots of references to TWD in that, also one to Mad Max 2 with the music box scene but hey, back to TWD.
I am sorry to see terminus go so quickly, such a build up but I guess Carol made up for it with her amazing escape plan for Rick n the others.

So Beth is with the preacher then.... looks like it and now we know Morgan is back too....... what is going to happen next?
Did I also see in the trailer for TWD5 a shot of garath around a fire talking about helping Rick get to California or is this something I imagined?

Keep up the reviews, my first time commenting here too :)

  42. Thanks for the comments! The quotes are based on what I hear, so it's possible I got the word wrong. Anyway, come back and comment more on the reviews whenever you can! I just published a new one for the latest episode.

By the way, I remember that trailer too. It doesn't make a lot of sense given what we saw in the latest episode. hmm.

I had to watch it back a couple of times, but when Mary is thrown back into the cattle car, Gareth calls out "Mom" a couple of times. They confirmed it on Talking Dead too.
