The Originals - Covers for a new book series from Julie Plec

With protagonists as old as the Original family, The CW’s hit show The Originals has a lot of history to cover. So to help with catching viewers up on the family’s 1,000-year-old saga, executive producer Julie Plec has created entirely new stories for a trilogy of books.

The Originals: The Rise: Arriving in New Orleans in 1722, the Original vampire siblings hope they’ve escaped their dangerous past. But when Klaus falls for the wrong woman, Elijah hunts for a home to call their own, and Rebekah infiltrates a camp of human soldiers in search of allies, they set into motion a chain of events that could bring their new life crashing down around them.

The Originals: The Loss: Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah have finally wrested control of New Orleans from the witches and werewolves who once called it home—but to get the one thing he desires above all else, Klaus must put his trust in a witch with the power to unleash an ancient curse upon his family.

The Originals: The Resurrection: The Mikaelson siblings are determined to make New Orleans their own once and for all. But with Elijah besotted with a beautiful witch and Rebekah pursuing the key to her family’s immortality, the reins are in Klaus’s hands… and his thirst for vengeance and power might tear his family apart for good.

Book One, The Rise, is scheduled to be released in February 2015 with Book Two, The Loss, following in April 2015 and Book Three, The Resurrection, in June 2015.

Well I guess peoples suspicions that these might be romance-centric since this season may not have much romance is looking more and more likely. I wonder if these are canon or not. I'll still be reading them either way.

Also those covers look suspiciously like the Archangel Academy series. Even the background colors are the same.

  3. Sounds pretty romance heavy. "Klaus falls for the wrong woman" and "Elijah falls for a young witch"
    well geez....

Top 3 facts you didn't know about "The Originals"

    - Reign is actually a prequel to TO, it tells the story of Klaus who plans to become the king of scotland, by disuising himself as Mary he attempts to take control. These days Klaus prefers not to talk about what happened back when, because he secretly enjoyed it

    - Leanardo DaVinci was actually the worst painter ever, if you knew the original model of the Mona Lisa: Rebekah. DaVinci painted her terribly causing her to get a terrible self image

    - Elijah was Elvis, but we all knew that already

  4. So I guess Kol doesn't exist in this universe...

    ReplyDelete
  5. putting Julie's name on the cover with such large fonts isnt gonna make a lot of money for them. especially after this season of TVD and TO

    ReplyDelete
  6. Fanfiction, basically.

    ReplyDelete
  7. He exists, he was daggered though, I would assume that Kol telling Elena about the NO witches and him rolling with them was him getting undaggered, meeting a witch, slipping on a banana peel and landing on a dagger Klaus accidentally dropped minutes earlier.

    Dude had some bad luck

  8. I may not be her biggest fan but credit where credit is due. She created the original family, she saw Daniel Gillies potential and turned him into Klaus brother. She pretty much made this spin-off happen wich at times is written pretty well. Forget about Hayley and Marcel for a second: that Celeste storyline was brilliant. Mikael returning from the dead was a great move and various twists were great.

I dislike Julie pushing so many ships on us (Klayley, Delena, Stelena, Halyijah, Klaroline, Kalijah, Klonnie, Bamon and SO MANY MORE) but overall she managed to at least create a thick universe with compelling characters (mostly, as much as I dislike Hayley and Marcel they actually created compelling characters for TO: I enjoyed Sophie, Celeste, Thierry and Josh)

So for as much crap she has given us she gave us two more brilliant things.

  9. Why is the cover for The Loss a flipped picture of Elijah and Klaus? I am no fan of memes, but looking at Klaus, all I can think of is this picture I have seen floating around.

    ReplyDelete
  10. wich meme are you talking about?
I do see some sad trend with Klaus staring at every potential buyer with a "Don't you dare buying this, I'll tear out your liver after I feed you ships" look but other than that these covers look solid

  11. WTF? All this sounds awful. And where is Kol in all this? He was canonically in NOLA too (as he told Elena).

There were so many interesting things they could have done in the books with their pasts, but this? I just don't get how they manage to screw up every possibly of doing something interesting and great with these characters - first the show and now this.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sounds horrible, but I didn't expect anything else to be published by Harlequin.

    ReplyDelete
  13. No way in hell. I can understand those who write and read
fanfiction, but this...absolutely not. If Plec was writing this, which I
sincerely doubt since she's working on two TV shows, she will keep the most
interesting stories for the Originals. This is milking the fans, and in an
    embarrassing way.

    ReplyDelete
  14. How is the show screwed up.... the family is returning to the fold.... It's what was promised and the books do however sound pretty lame

    ReplyDelete
  15. They won't keep Mikael long-term, I think he'll be gone by mid-season. There's only three Originals - Mikael, Elijah & Klaus and Mikael didn't even make most of the promo material. Elijah & Klaus have both really been destroyed as characters (particularly Elijah, who's only purpose is to prop up Hayley now instead of being an actual character).

Claire, Nate & Casper (who play the other 3 Original siblings) aren't on the show but useless characters like Hayley are.

    ReplyDelete
  16. None of this is making me a least bit interested, julie's name isn't helping either!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Such the optimist.... Nate has done flashbacks so far but now is currently staying in Atlanta so.... Alice Evans has done flashbacks, Caspar has gave up acting and one of the actors tweeted thanks to Sebastian while shooting episode 10 so he still isnt dead. They have said Klaus and Hayley will never be romantic and Elijah + Hayley are growing apart. and I honestly think you are purposely trying to find reasons to not like the show at all.

    ReplyDelete
  18. But why not just bring Alice Evans back? They did that on TVD in Season 3 - they had come back from the dead so they could do it here as well.

They already had Klaus/Hayley hook-up and gave them a baby. There's no going back from that and Elijah obsessing over Hayley because Klaus knocked her up is gross.

  19. I think Julie Plec has some great ideas. I agree that the Celeste storyline was brilliant and Enzo was probably my favorite thing about TVD S5 but she needs someone to "edit" her work and tell her some of her ideas or the execution of them might not to be the best. I always wonder if Kevin Williamson was that person for her and after he left she was only surrounded by yes people.

Between the series and this books to be released, the only dark thing I see on TO are the set lights.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Not interested. They only used part of one of the Stefan books in the show and then they ignored pretty much anything else that was written in them. Total waste of time and money.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So.... they're relegating the story that SHOULD have been TO S1 to a book series?

This is what we wanted to know LAST YEAR. Why was New Orleans so important? How did the Original Family arrive there? How did they build it or take control of it? What memories drew them back and kept them away for so long?

I remember how excited I was a year ago for this show, and now even the story I originally wanted can't get me the least bit enthusiastic about the premiere. Because we'll never see that story. We're going to have to pay to read it in some ridiculous book series. Meanwhile, we're stuck with a repeat of the awful first season, with a baby on board and no Rebekah or Kol. (I noticed Kol is also suspiciously absent from each synopsis - go figure)

The only redeeming quality about these books is that they won't have Hayley in them.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Both Celeste & Francesca (and I'll add Genevieve as well) had loads of potential but she just kills them off instead of allowing Celeste to be Elijah's primary love interest and to really explore that story (which is what should have happened). Francesca is going to be dead by like episode 3 - which is a shame because the Guerrera plot-line was the only good thing to happen in the back-half of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I hate that the Guerrara plot is going to be over in three episodes. I really like the actress that plays Francesca and that plot should at least last 9 episodes especially because Hayley's pack is also involved.

So Julie Plec doesn't want to give the fans a story about all The Originals, not even in these books that are supposed to take place before the present. I am very intrigued about Kol, Finn, Esther and Mikael. I love the golden trio, too, but I wish Julie Plec wasn't so insistent in focusing only in the three of them. To tell the story of THE ORIGINALS, you need THE ORIGINALS.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Worthy to add: TVD season 5 is mainly written by Caroline Dries whereas Julie focused on TO

    ReplyDelete
  27. she needs to stop.... she can can barely write the tv show... and saying that is giving her way to much credit

    ReplyDelete
  28. Are book series based on TV shows FINALLY becoming a thing again?! I know Supernatural has been doing them, but that's the only one I can think of, back in the day I used to read the Alias books, BtVS, X-Files, etc.. And Sleepy Hollow just released their first original novel which I intend to read. The summary of this sounds somewhat meh, but I'll try to read the first one at least, as so far I am still loving The Originals (really hope s2 is as good as s1)... I love the covers though. :)

I think it's more a CW thing. They're trying to recoup costs using alternate methods.

The Vampire Diaries had a prequel series based on the show that ran from 2010 to 2012. It's no-longer considered canon to the show though.

Reign also has a short story and a novel set in between seasons 1 and 2 that appears to be canon.

Arrow and The Flash currently have digital comic books being released every fortnight too. Hard copies come out at the start of each month. Leaks from DC have suggested that an iZombie tie-in comic may be coming too.

The show is signed to Harlequin.....just saying.....seems like stating the obvious when saying they are romance heavy......

I am ecstatic that I won't see the Guerrara plot is over. Its a time waster.....too much time spent on people that no one cares about. Same thoughts apply to Cami, Marcel and Davina. Make new characters....IMO they were a mistake to the plot of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bertha Strongham6 October 2014 at 23:22

Seems like the books are a departure from the show.....no Hayley.....

    ReplyDelete
  33. i thought the success of TVD'S first 2 seasons was mostly on Kevin and not Julie. Kevin left the show after 3.01. Season 3 was still good but not as exciting as the first 2 seasons. Season 4 was toleratable and then season 5 was a hot mess.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'd actually argue that seaosn 4 was better than 3.
3 had a completely non-existing plot and a repetitive objective. Season 4 on the other hand actually had a ongoing mystery and a plot

Now if we include the annoying ships both were equally terrible
5...well that one I couldn't even watch completely because it disgusted me so much

    ReplyDelete
  35. having no-name writers write cheap to produce merchandise is a good way to make money indeed

I can't be the only one wanting a open-world Originals game?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Christopher DeBono7 October 2014 at 06:38

Arrow would probably work best in a game out of all the CW's lineup. Make it in the style of GTA or Sleeping Dogs. Just replace guns with different styles of bows, crossbows and arrows.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well actually I would argue that Arrow with the style of the Batman: Arkham games would work the best

Originals could follow in the footsteps of Vampire-The Masquerade: Bloodlines
