Interview with Michael Hogan, Teen Wolf's Gerard Argent

29 Oct 2014

Michael Hogan was born in Northern Ontario, Canada, where he trained at the National Theatre School of Canada. Hogan has done a number of films and TV shows, he is most known for his role in Battlestar Galatica as Colonel Saul Tigh. Hogan was also a series regular in Teen Wolf’s second season as Gerard Argent as a werewolf hunter.

I got the chance to have a chat with Michael Hogan when he attended the Melbourne, Australia event Armageddon. He joined a number of actors and actresses including, Giancarlo Esposito, Mira Furlan, Jenna Colman and Margot Kidder.

He spoke a lot about his experience in Teen Wolf and was surprised and excited to be talking about Teen Wolf because people usually ask him about Battlestar Galatica. This was Hogan’s first time in Melbourne and so far he was enjoying himself and despite taking a 20 hour flight to arrive he was able to enjoy his first sunrise near the parliament building in Melbourne.

Hogan is quite fond of Jeff Davis’ (creator of Teen Wolf) work, “He is a brilliant human being and an amazing and phenomenal writer.” Davis was also a fan of Hogan’s work in Battlestar Galatica and asked him to join the cast of Teen Wolf in the second season, which he turned out to the villain in the series.

“To play that type of character is always interesting and I was able to show with the writing the different sides of the character.” We first see his character in the opening scene where he is with a group of the other hunters and we soon find out he is the grandfather of Allison.

Hogan mentioned that MTV’s Teen Wolf is a low budget production and a lot of the scenes are all make-up based and not special effects after filming. He spoke about the scene with all this black stuff coming out of his mouth and eyes. Before they shot the scene they made him take a big sip of this black stuff and roll his head back and when they said action he’d roll his forward and all the stuff would come out.

When asked who he would have loved to work with more from the Teen Wolf cast he said Dylan. Well I guess who wouldn’t, Dylan O’Brien is a fantastic actor and he is still very young. “I would have loved to do more scenes with Dylan, that being said we did do a lot of talking outside our trailers about acting in the industry and things we liked to do in our off time.”

Hogan expressed his hate for filming for night scenes and when complained about this with a friend from Canada they told him, “Hogan it’s werewolves, there will be nights, they’re up at nights”. That being said a quote he constantly keep saying throughout the interview and wrote it on a number of signatures for the Teen Wolf fans was, “Kill them, Kill them all!!!”, which his character said in a night scene.

And of course the main question that is on all of your ‘Teen Wolf fan’ minds is Hogan going to be coming back to Teen Wolf to cause hell for our favourite teenagers. Hmm he was very vague on this and said he wasn’t allowed to say anything based on non-discourse agreements; however he did say that it would be neat to be back on the show.

Hogan did express some views that Davis has about ratings and viewer numbers on TV shows, “I did have a lunch with Jeff Davis the other day, but don’t tell anyone that I did that, just to say hello, were friends. It infuriates Davis because they base a lot of things on the numbers of those who is watching the show but he says, “you’re not counting all the numbers!” this 2014 who is watching commercial TV these days, I’m sure there are millions of people watching it around the world by downloading the show, but they aren’t allowed to count those numbers."

If you’re interested to see a project Hogan has already filmed check out the TV show, ‘Man Seeking Women’ which will be airing next year with a 10 episode run, Hogan said he will be appearing in the second episode ‘Man Seeking Women’ centers on Josh Greenberg (Jay Baruchel) a naive romantic on a desperate quest for love. Hogan spoke about wanting to guest star in ‘Justified’ so maybe we can help him out and spread the word.
