Gracepoint - Episode 1.05 - Review: "Watch your back"

Episode 1.05 of Gracepoint reveals some dark secrets about many peoples past life's , including Jack and Susan Wright. We find out many interesting things that all point to one person. We may have just found our killer.

We find out many secrets during the episode ,that deepens the mystery as to who did it. We first see Beth in the middle of the night phone Ellie, who at this point is trying to get some well earned sleep. They meet outside and talk about the case, this is when Ellie reveals the truth behind Mark's arrest and that he was having an affair. You could see the distraught look in Beth's eyes, I think she was kind of hoping the kiss she saw was a one off thing.
During their talk , we see the Reverend standing in his church doorway watching them from a distance. He says later on when Ellie asks him what he was doing "Oh, that was you" He obviously knew who he was watching and I think he has a bit of an obsession with Beth as he always seems to be around her or he is always on stand by to comfort her. We also find out that the Reverend has insomnia, and when asked about his whereabouts the night Danny was killed, he says "I might have been wondering about" we don't know too much about him, he is one of them characters where anything could be revealed about him at anytime. I would like to find out about his and Beth's relationship though, also why he seems to be persistent in keeping people like Mr Connelly away from Beth.

We find out some interesting things related to Jack, he has a conviction for having sex with a minor. We don't know yet if this was a boy or a girl who he supposedly had sex with, but I am willing to bet we will find out soon. You could say he is a likely suspect now we know that, but I don't think he is since there was no evidence to suggest any sexual activity on Danny's body. Also as he is like 70 years old it would be a real struggle for him to move the body. Then again we find out later that he has found Danny's phone in one of the kayaks. Something that gets me is why did it take so long for him to find the phone? If he owns the shop which he does surely he would have found it earlier.
He might have deliberately gave it to them now before his past gets revealed by Owen; as we know he will do anything for a byline no matter who's life he is ruining. Speaking of Owen, he actually went down to see Jack about the story he had found out about him, this is where Jack loses it, you can clearly see he wanted that to stay buried in the past. Owen is still very dislikeable at this point, I am beginning to lose my last nerve with him as he is always there making peoples lives a misery for his own benefit. We did find out that he is having somewhat of a hard time himself with his mother loosing all there stuff to bailiffs; presumably she is on drugs. I understand slightly why he always wants to get a story; for the money/ He could wait until the police deal with it first though. Jack could have given the phone to the Solano's as a sign of good faith and so they won't believe anything they might hear about him. If I was him I wouldn't have given them the phone as it makes him look guiltier than ever, especially when his past becomes public knowledge

As the episode progresses, Jack only looks more guilty. We find out something else about him at the end. He lived in a place called Orange Cape which is where a case similar to Danny's took place. Could Jack really have killed Danny and that other child? He seems so innocent to me, like he wouldn't hurt a fly.
Another damaging thing we see of Jack is him burning pictures of his wildlife group of boys that he took. I reckon he is only doing that in case people starting thinking he only took them because he is a pervert. He could well be, as there is so much against him to draw to that conclusion. The hairs found on that burning boat did in fact match Danny's, Jack has easy access to boats so it wouldn't be hard for him to obtain one. I just don't understand what his motive could be. Having said that we don't know the full story behind his conviction, so we can't jump to conclusions just yet; only assumptions.

Asides from Jack, there were some other interesting things we find out. Susan Wright is actually called Ruth Erlock, Gemma found out after running her social security number after Susan applied for Chloe's job. Susan is very creepy, and she seems to want to be always near the detective and the case. Guilty conscience perhaps? She is someone that if I saw down an alley way I would turn the other way. She really creeps me out, there is just something about her that is off.
She also says to Kathy, after breaking into a locked newspaper shop who is looking into Susan "I know men who would rape you". Who says that to someone? Only someone really twisted would. She definitely has some history, something dark , especially if she had to change her name. Maybe she killed someone, or someone is after her that forced her to change name and move town,as don't forget she is also fairly new in town. Mr Connelly is also hiding something of his own, which gets revealed, he has been declared bankrupt and also has a conviction for theft and conspiracy to commit fraud. It looks to me that he was just using Danny's death as an excuse to try and get money of a grieving family, which actually makes me sick to think about. So heartless. He probably just guessed about the boat, as there are many boats in Gracepoint and the body was found by the sea. Also worthy of noting is that Carver has a daughter and was married, they lived in Rosemont where that previous murder took place.

Episode 5 Prime Suspect

Jack Reinhold
Everything is stacked up against Jack since we learnt about his past. He has a previous conviction for sexual assault, he had Danny's phone on him and he works near where all the boats are so has easy access to them.

Summary
Another brilliant episode, it looks likely that we have found a possibly killer with a slight motive. Gracepoint does a good job of changing round the suspects so you don't quite know who did it. The acting was very good as always and the writing of the script was very well done. Can't wait for episode 6!

As always , thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!

  2. Why Did Jack burn all those pictures. Looks like a few were with Danny, but yet he handed over the phone to the authorities? That part doesn't make sense to me. I still think Jack is too obvious of a choice. I really think the killer is someone we haven't been introduced to yet but someone we know is an accomplice. or at least is covering for this person.

  3. He burnt them to protect himself. If they found him with photos of the boys, there suspicions would increase. I think the pictures make him look more guilty, as there were pictures of multiple boys which could make him out as if he was a pervert. Giving the phone to the solano's I think was stupid as it made him look very guilty, but also kind of smart. As if they say searched the kayaking shop and found the phone, he would be arrested.

I don't think he is the killer, it is like you said too obvious. I don't think there was two people involved, but only one. My money is on Pete. We don't know anything about him hardly.

  4. Thanks for a great recap. Nick Nolte is doing a wonderful job. I watched Broadchurch. I'm enjoying this version alot.

  5. Susan (Ruth) is creepy. I had a bad feeling about her since the first episode. She just seems too obvious of a suspect to those watching, only showing her character to viewers while seemingly maintaining a private life. Another thing that bothers me is that she had Danny's skateboard in her trailer. She is the one who keeps the keys to that cabin Danny was apparently killed in, so she could have been the killer, or maybe she knew the killer and worked with someone/people close to Danny. A lot of people seem suspicious, even Danny's friend who deletes evidence.
One thing I don't understand is why they need the phone. Can't they access the phone's interaction through the carrier? My parents used to do that to me all the time. They just went online, logged into my phone, and saw everyone I contacted, when and where, and how long conversations lasted.bregardless if I deleted messages/calls.

  6. I am enjoying this a lot to, shame barely anyone is tuning into to it though.

  7. That is a good idea, but I doubt they would do that. It is beyond me why they can never think outside the box on these shows. I don't think Susan will turn out to be the killer, but she definitely saw something, as why else would she have his skateboard. I still think the killer is Pete the priest.

  8. Nick Nolte's voice sure has changed a lot the past few years! I don't think he's guilty though. Loved the episode. It reminds me of season 1 of The Killing (but hopefully doesn't end the same way).

  9. I don't think Jack is guilty either.

  10. I know we should believe that Jake is the killer, but I don't buy it. He may be pervert, but not a killer. For me, personally, he was never a suspect at all (too old to move a body, etc.)

  11. He wont turn out to be the killer. Even though I think he is a suspect, I doubt he did it.
