CW Developing Vigilante Drama and Misfits Remake from Martin Gero

12 Oct 2014

Martin Gero, the creator/executive produce of the well received Canadian teen drama L.A. Complex, which aired on the CW, has set up a new drama project at the U.S. network. Titled The Phoenix Project, it is described as a vigilante drama about three friends who, in an attempt to combat apathy, take an anarchistic, dangerous and morally questionable approach to save society from itself. Gero is the writer/executive producer through his production company Quinn’s House and Warner Bros. TV.

Also at the CW and WBTV, Gero is working on an U.S. version of the U.K. drama Misfits, about a group of young offenders with supernatural powers. The project, originally developed at the CW last season, has been rolled over and given an order for a new script.

  1. Misfits remake on CW? I love Misfits and i love The CW, but those 2 definitely does not match. Misfits is too dirty for CW

Lol I had no idea Misfits had supernatural elements in it...I thought it was a just a comedy.

Both sound really interesting and Martin Gero was involved with Stargate so im definitely checking these out!

  3. Both sound bad, but remake slightly worse.

  4. I love misfits and I love The CW. But I really think that misfits is better suited to cable.

  5. Hmmm! This stuff doesn't sound good. Not a fan!

  6. The first seasons of Misfits with Robert Sheehan were very good.

When he left much of the humor and pace left the show.

It will need to be sanitized for the CW. Casting, like always , crucial.

  7. I wondered what was going with the misfits remake. Last i heard that Josh (the guy behind the o.c gossip girl) was doing it.

  8. Where are they planning to put these shows next year ?
Mon - The Originals & Jane the Virgin
Tues - The Flash & Supernatural
    Wed - Arrow & The 100
Thurs - The Vampire Diaries & Reign
( like them or hate them these shows have there own followings and are likely not going anywhere and then there is iZombie, The Messengers, Hart of Dixie, and Beauty and the Beast to deal with )
Why exactly doesn't' the CW add 5 more hours a week / 1 extra hour a night to their line up like the other networks ?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think 5 extra hours a week would cost a LOT of money The CW doesn't have. Look at FOX, they're considered on of the big 4 (well maybe not at the moment) and they still only have 2 hours of prime time a night. I think CW's next move would be bringing back Sundays once they're able to deal with that.

  10. I have to agree.. its not a show for reg tv.. if a remake is to be made it needs to be on a channel like Hbo.. Showtime.. etc... I loved the UK Misfits and I'll check it out but not getting a good feeling about it... plus the casting HAS to be SPOT on...

  11. Hey better CW than MTV

    ReplyDelete
  12. Both of these sound good but we will se if CW can pull off one of the best British dramas Misfits

    ReplyDelete
  13. I agree the first three seasons were the best.. even though it wasn't the same vibe I still watched the show till they killed of the Curtis character that last remaining org cast member.... and it wasn't till the show ended that I even watched the remaining eps..

  14. U're fairly optimistic with the CW pick up. Doubt Jane will be any kind of hit and if Reign will be there next season it will most likely move to Fridays it'll keep a main day only if it gets better ratings.

I argued the time slot issue a couple of times here, and it seems to be tough to get those.Even fox which has much better ratings just has 2 more slots than CW on Sunday. So don't think it's that easy to get those slots.

And still all this is in development stage so they are pretty far away from a pilot and even further away from a pick!

  15. I don't think I like either of these. The vigilante drama could have potential but we need more info than that small release. Misfits would have to be too watered down for the CW. I wouldn't call it an American remake because it will be so different.

  16. i saw misfits first 2 seasons were really good season 3 made me hate everything abt that show

    ReplyDelete
  17. Exactly. Can anyone imagine Misfits with no swearing, nudity, dirty jokes, dingy places and everyone looking like a model?

    ReplyDelete
  18. All of those things made misfits fun and unique. If anyone we're to do an American remake it should be Netflix. That way the story can grow and breathe just like it was able to in years UK version.

  19. I don't think the CW will ever bring back Sunday's. The night is too hard because all of the good cable shows are on Sunday's and football dominates Sunday's.

  20. It wasnt that bad but the quality of the show did go down with season 3

Misfits - would be more like an adaption than a remake. I think the idea can work. Keep the basic premise, a bunch of outcast juvenile delinquents get random and offbeat superpowers, hijinks ensue. Go easy on the melodrama and don't try to emulate any of the original characters. Just make it so the same thing also happened in the US and this would be the story of those particular people. For god sake just don't vampire diaries it up CW.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, Dorothy Must Die had such an interesting premise, I'd like to see it developed.

  23. This year's projects on The CW don't sound interesting at all, whereas last years did. I want them to try some developments of last year too: The Perfectionists, Hourman, Unfamous, The Painted Girls ... And I really want The Selection, but I doubt that they'l give it a third chance. But since I'm a big fan of The 100 (and movies like Divergent and Hunger Games), another futuristic, dystopian,post-apocalyptic drama, would be cool.

  24. No, no, no. No Misfits remake. Remember the Skins US adaption? No.

I FLOVE the Misfits! Hopefully they will get some of the original actors to play the characters!!

Agreed! But maybe they are trying to increase their market share in the adult category. I love the show and you are right, they had better do it justice.

  27. A Misfits remake is a terrible idea. It would never work in the US especially in the CW.

    ReplyDelete
  28. the power switch totally hated that concept
and that dude turning into boy and girl .
and i missed that actor who let after season 2.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love Misfits(until season 3) because it has a big level of dirtiness and an unique humor. I am not sure that the CW could copy that. Plus,I think american Misfits is a little weird. In my opinion the UK version is perfect.

  30. Because the affiliates, to whom the extra hour now belongs, make more money with their own programming than they do with CW fare. The Cw is in a precarious position with its affiliates already, so there is zero chance that they take back the hour anytime soon.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Why do remakes CW, let those screw ups to MTV.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The Misfits remake could be cool, but the other idea…I see it only lasting one episode.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Geez. At this rate they might as well add a cape to the CW logo.

    ReplyDelete
  34. How many vigilante shows do they need?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think Fox doing the news at 10 kind of works, because NBC, ABC & CBS all do it at 11 so people who want to go bed earlier can watch the news at 10.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Aren't BatB and HoD ending? I wonder if they're planning on having some sort of summer programming because even if this is the last season for TVD, TO & Reign that's still only 3 spots open and they're planning on adding a second Arrow spin-off.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree! What happened to that project? It sounded really good and now that Emerald City isn't happening anymore it would be the perfect time for another oz show.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I heard rumours that HoD and BatB were ending this year so that's two mid season spots. Jane is probably also not going to be a big hit (which I'm actually hoping it will be because I've heard it's really good) and I have a feeling either The Messengers or IZombie is also going to end up being cancelled after one season (which would also be pretty sad since both shows look pretty good).

So I have a feeling there'll be enough room for two or three new (mid season) shows next year.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Isn't Misfits a show with lots of swearing, violence and nudity? Won't changing that make it a whole other show? Imagine the CW adapting a HBO or STARZ show.

    ReplyDelete
  40. There's no way it will be anything like the original on CW, what on earth are they thinking?! lol. Overman himself was working on a US version a few years back before getting caught up in Dirk Gently and Atlantis, I guess he must have sold the rights on. I'm very surprised by that tbh, and saddened really considering the CW have now got it :s

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love Misfits, don't think The CW should go forward with a remake, though. It would have to be so washed down the kids would come across as pansies compared to the Brit ones, lol. I feel like there's more appropriate teen and young adult oriented British shows that would be a better fit for The CW. Witches and angels are hot right now, they could adapt Hex, which I'd LOVE to see. Or The Fades, which has weird ghost/zombie hybrids and would fit in with with some of their other programming.

The Phoenix Project sounds... intriguing but I'm not sure something I'd watch. Sounds like it would be a companion piece for Arrow - VIGILANTE WEDNESDAYS! - or something.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The only way a Misfits remake could work if it's the same concept but different characters.

    ReplyDelete
  43. A vigilante drama on The CW? Original.
