Titans - DC Comics TV Show - Nearing Pilot Order at TNT

12 Sept 2014

Warner Bros. TV is rapidly expanding its live-action DC Comics TV universe. This season, it is going from one to four primetime series, returning Arrow and freshmen The Flash, Gotham and Constantine, and already is prepping another major broadcast franchise with Supergirl.

Now the studio is expanding the DC brand to cable drama with Titans, a project that is nearing a pilot order at TNT. Titans is one of three TNT drama pilots stuck on the runaway, awaiting a formal green light as the network is undergoing a regime change.

Written by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman and executive-turned-scribe Marc Haimes, Titans revolves around the eponymous group of young Super Heroes-to-be from the DC Universe. The action series centers on Dick Grayson (probably best known for his alter ego as Robin), who emerges from the shadow of Batman to become Nightwing, the leader of a fearless band of new Super Heroes including Starfire, Raven and many others.

  6. DC: "Hey! We don't have as many great movies- exclude Batman- like Marvel, but have you checked out our TV shows variaty?"

I hope all the upcoming DC TV shows that are coming up end up being as good as Arrow, if so DC can relly stand out on television, whereas Marvel obviously have captivated the film landscape

  7. if they would connect it to the DC TV universe they should totally include Arsenal!

  9. Paul Wesley as Dick Grayson/Nightwing
    Spencer Locke as Kory Anders/Starfire
    Colton Haynes as Roy Harper/Arsenal
    Samantha Jo as Rose Wilson/Ravager
    Alexia Fast as Wendy Harris
    Manu Bennett as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke

The young athlete Rose Wilson has achieved everything in life she ever dreamed to achieve: she won more medals than she can count and is going straight towards a promising career as an attorney. Unable to do anything against this horrible abuse of power Rose decides to take out her enemies on her own. Dressed up as a vigilante she attempts to change the mind of the men behind the firm but is quickly taken out by their well trained security team led by a mysterious soldier called Deathstroke.

But as more and more of the past of the members is revealed Rose finds herself in a deadly mix of others personal issues and her own: because her own father, who she believed to have died in a heroic mission, might turn out to be alive after all.

  11. I'm glad to see Dick Grayson get his due, and can't wait to see Raven in live-action. I loved her in the comics and the cartoon.

I do have some concerns though:

    1) Will they be able to reference Batman? I know Smallville wasn't allowed to at all, but it is an essential part of Dick Grayson's character. Same with Wonder Woman, if Wonder Girl is ever introduced. I know that they referenced Batman in the article, but that could be just to drum up interest in the project.

    2) Character usage. Since he's going to be in the Justice League movie, I'm afraid Cyborg won't be allowed to be a part of this show. And will the writers be up to making their own version of Deathstroke while Arrow is still on the air? They could always be unique and introduce Jericho and Ravager. What about Wally West? If he's included I really don't want to see the New52black-stereotype!Wally running around spray-painting buildings, hating cops and the establishment and all of that.

  12. Marvel may catch up with the Netflix deal. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. Plus all of those being available to binge-watch will be great. Not to mention, I have high hopes for Agent Carter.

Still, I"m loving what DC is doing. However, I am afraid of this going the way of other DC projects that they didn't go forward with. Mercy Reef (the Aquaman pilot), the Graysons (smart to pass on that show, no one gives a damn about Robin before he became Robin), Raven (witch without the Titans to interact with... whats the point?), and the Wonder Woman shows that didn't go forth.

Please pick this up TNT. Dick Grayson has been a favorite of mine for years.

  13. I hope they have beastboy as the comic relief.

  14. Marvel fan boys, can't you just enjoy both products.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That'd be awesome!! I hope so too.

  16. I enjoy both of them, but clearly Marvel isn't that good at tv shows (it took a looong time for AoS to be entertaining) and DC is not that good at films (aside from Christopher Nolan Batman's trilogy... yuck). Marvel is good at films and DC is better at TV shows, so I think DC is actually going in the right direction having so many super heroes shows, like Arrow, Flash, Super Girl and stuff

  17. interesting news as I really enojyed the cartoon... if it does come to pass, I'm curious as to the tone that the show would have and which Titans/villians will show up

Dick Grayonson, Roy Harper, Aqualad, beast boy Victor Stone (tv version) starfire, and Raven......

  19. The problem with DC movies, in my opinion is the tone. They saw a dark and serious Batman movie do amazing and a light-hearted Green Lantern glop and decided to implant the dark moody tone onto their cinematic universe, even to characters to which it doesn't work for.

Case in point: Man of Steel. It was a good movie, I have the dvd. It makes for an excellent Elseworlds tale, but as a Superman movie? Where's the sense of wonder, awe and adventure? Where is the "man" in Superman? You can't make a movie with a dark, Nolanly take on the character and have that as the definitive. It really cut my enthusiasm for BvS in half. A dark brooding vigilante fights crime vs a dark brooding vigilante that fights crime.

Also, DC needs to stop filming there movies in that broody gray.

The latest rumors say that DC doesn't want to have jokes or humor in their movies, they want to differentiate from Marvel's success with it and stay clear from Green Lanterns failure. However, characters like Superman, Shazam (which I hear actually will be light-hearted and fun, but because of that won't be in the DC cinematic universe), Legion of Superheroes, Flash, etc.... those need humor.

Marvels problems? Too much humor takes the seriousness out of the situations sometimes, fake-out character deaths repeatedly, not having the rights to all of their characters, and don't get me started on Iron Man 2.

  20. My line-up would be:
    Dick Grayson
    Raven
    Beast Boy
    Starfire
    Cyborg
Kid Flash (Wally West - but not the New52 one. Leave that for CW's The Flash)

In season two I"d have Jericho join, and a couple of seasons later Ravager. Then Terra and adapt the Judas Contract and after that.... The Terror of Trigon!

After that is when I'd introduce Roy and Garth (the Aqualad I prefer)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I hope Beast Boy is more like his comicbook self than the cartoon self.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I actually kind of hope they don't. Arrow's take on Ravager was terrible (and dead) and Jericho is MIA. I don't want them not to show up on Titans because of Arrow's mistakes.

Binding it to the CW verse would just limit the show.

  23. You know, when I was a kid I was bullied for my love of superheroes/comicbooks/zombies/horror/genre but now that its popular I feel vindicated (and annoyed when I see those same bullies jumping on the bandwagon saying they always loved this kind of stuff.(

Its a great time to be a comic book fan.

  24. I think it might since this is TNT, either way he's a great character :)

  25. Oh god this would be amazing!

  26. Oh, crap! I've been looking forward to this!! Movieverse though, but I'd be up for this, too!

  27. OMG, for real? I don't watch a single show on TNT, but if they handle this right, I'd watch the hell out of this show. Dick Grayson (especially as Nightwing) is my favorite Comic character, so I'd need solid casting but even more than that, I'd need him to keep his personality and not be a Batman-lite; that's not who Dick is, not even when he was Batman. I think a shorter, tighter season could be good, especially if they have an overall storyarc and not just a straight up procedural. Oh and can they use Slade Wilson, despite him showing up on Arrow? Because I'd love for him to show up. I never actually saw the Teen Titans cartoon (the animation was a bit of a tun off) but now it's making me want to check it out.

  28. I love these kind of superhero shows but it's getting kind of ridiculous how many are getting made right now! DC with Arrow, Flash, Gotham, Constantine, and now maybe this and supergirl, marvel with agents of shield, agent carter and the netflix shows... total domination! The New 52 comic series of teen titans was pretty terrible (I haven't checked out the recent reboot) and I never got into the cartoon as a kid, but will definitely check it out if they manage to get it on air.

  29. You make an excellent point right there, and you are absolutely right about Iron Man 2 (what a waste), but I think over time Marvel has improved sharply with their moves getting the right tone and balance for their movies (Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy being truly awesome movies).

DC shouldn't take out all of the jokes, there should be some but without sacrificing the drama on it. Every superhero has its own tone and his own way to tell a story, so you can't put them all in a bag and try to make something fit in an enviroment that it's not suited for them, and that's the case for Man of Steel, just like you pointed out.

So far in TV Arrow has had fantastic seasons in which it found a way to tell a compelling story with seriousness, but from time to time there can be something funny in the middle, whereas AoS was far too focused on being as broad as possible in the beginning, falling into predictable and overly boring territories until the Hydra plot came out and became entertaining. So that's why I say DC has better balance on their tv shows (even Smallville was great from S1-S6) while Marvel is showing quite a struggle in that department

This sounds great! I truly hope that they follow the Wolfman and Perez style and narrative from the 1980's which is by and large the definitive telling of the Teen Titans story.

Which means the show should do its best to resemble the comic book and NOT the more recent cartoon.

  31. Hmmm sounds neat! But they are bit overfloating us with these DC shows. I would have them rather wait a season or 2, maybe around 2017.
Cast: Nightwing- Steven McQueen or James somethong that played Nathan in OTH
Raven - Jessica Biel or Jessica Stroup
    Starfire - Alexandra Beckstrindge

  32. Beast Boy.Cyborg.

    Villians: Slade Wilson Please :)

  33. This has so much potential as a show with the amount of characters you can add in and use not to mention doing crossovers with the other DC shows.

I'd seriously like to see the following in the mix while letting Warner Bros be creative with the villains -

    Roy Harper/Speedy/Arsenal - crossovers

    Kid Flash/Impulse
    Starfire
    Raven
    Dick Grayson/Robin - **** Nightwing
    Aqualad
    Connor Kent/SuperBoy
    Cyborg
    Beast Boy
